I will definitely NOT be returning to Poway Sushi Lounge and I will be telling my friends and family not to go and waste their money. I called in an order on Friday night for one roll (rainbow roll) and sashimi (sliced yellowtail). They told me the wait was going to be 45 minutes, which I thought it was a little ridiculous but considering it was a Friday night I went with it. I show up and the staff was nice but they told me I was 12 minutes early so it wasn't ready but they offered to talk to the chef and let him know I was there. I looked around and the place is not that big, they had 4-5 sushi chefs working and it wasn't that busy and there was quite a few tables empty and some people looked like they were done eating. The service (staff) was nice and courteous but the food was NOT good AT ALL. The sliced yellowtail was good but not super fresh. The rainbow roll was DISGUSTING the shrimp and tuna on top of the roll was old and super smelly, and the roll was filled or more like stuffed with old imitation crab (only) so I ended up throwing the roll away, the only edible pieces were the avocado and the yellowtail from the roll. I'm really disappointed not only because I waited 45 minutes for A roll and sliced fish but it was really expensive at $30 for two things which I ended up throwing away half of it because it was inedible. read more

We ordered three rolls which we asked for no onions and one roll came out with a ton of onions. We had to ask multiple times to get wasabe and ginger. Went here for a date night with the hubby on friday and was pleasantly surprised. Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly/nice hostess, and then given a upbeat waiter. We sat at the sushi bar and were very happy with the service from both waiter and sushi chef. We tried their lobster roll and thought it tasted fresh and delicious! Had some calamari that was just as fresh and tasty. After that I went for a bento box with chicken katsu/veggie tempura/cali rolls/miso soup. Overall the bento was good, but have had better chicken katsu. Sushi was super! I had an very enjoyable time here. After seeing many people next to us ordering all kinds of sushi I think next time I will skip the bento box and just order a bunch of sushi for sure. read more

This used to be a nice place, but now it is off the list of good restaurants. Went yesterday with my wife for and had a very disappointing dinner. When we got our rolls - the fish was so thin - I had hard time even calling this sushi and not a crab and rice salad. Take a look on the second page of pictures at a rainbow roll with a slice of tuna on it. Yes, it is so thin, that is if wasn't red in color - no one would ever be able to tell there is fish there at all. In fact, the pieces with albacore and halibut looked like they had no fish since the fish is white and was so thin it was transparent. The next roll was caterpillar - it was tasty, but same problem. There was very little eel in it. How do i know? I got a piece without eel sauce on top and could not taste the eel inside. Seems like a trend and a sign of chefs or owners milking the formerly good reputation, but how long can this last? We used to come here on regular basis because it is really close to our house, but at this point - we may as well go to Ichiban (which changed owners recently), or even Kai Sushi by the movie theater. Both of them may not be as trendy or popular, but at least we will actually taste fish. At $13-$14 for a roll that has no fish and a ton of fake crab -it was rather upsetting. The truly sad part is that we hoped to have a special night out, but I felt the finishing touch (dinner at Sushi Lunge) was a let down. I expected to be impressed by the atmosphere and food, but both fell short of my expectations. Great expectations!!! Yes. Met expectations!!! NOT. Bummer, as I heard so many great things. Food: presented well and artistically, but so little on each plate! Either that, or I've become a complete glutton who demands more on my plate. We got an Unagi Roll, Fuzzy Navel, Mt. Fuji, and Spicy Tuna Spring Rolls. Unagi Roll was your typical boring roll. Very small and few pieces, so it was disappointing. My boyfriend almost had to force himself to eat the Fuzzy Navel since it was very sour. Oddly, the leftover pieces we took home tasted better the next day. Mt. Fuji was great! Unique and very creamy. The spring rolls were pretty decent and savory. Price: Ok...this place is not your cheap Sushi Deli (which I adore, by the way). But a good place to try once especially if you want to take a date who is on a diet (like I said, I must have become a major glutton). We came during happy hour, so prices were okay. Service: Um... ok, why were we ignored so many times? Our spring rolls also somehow came out as spicy tuna rolls, which were then taken back and took super long to come out. I have to preface my review by saying I don't like sushi one bit. The only reason I go inside sushi places like Poway Sushi Lounge is because I love me some teriyaki chicken. I ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl here and was shocked by a few things. First, the bowl is very large for a price that is lower than I've paid at other restaurants. Second, there are so many tasty veggies packed into the bowl. I'm used to just chicken and rice. It was a very good lunch. I will go back again to order myself another one. It's one of those places that I want to take friends and family to so they can also enjoy all it has to offer. The restaurant itself is in a good location right of Poway Road with private lot parking. It's fair sized, maybe just larger than a fast food joint. The décor inside is appealing, yet not over the top. Everyone working that day was kind and attentive to our needs. I also enjoyed watching a chef slice up some fish not far from our table. My son and I frequent this establishment on the regular. The food's next level and the service is alright for the most part. I recommend the Toro Nigiri and my boy loves the Tasmanian Devil (probably cause of the name LOL). My only complaint (not sure if this the place for it) is that sometimes I hear some sideways b.s. about the servers using slurs and shit behind closed doors, like they was overheard or something. Made reservations for my cousin-in-law's birthday dinner here (they usually like going to Love Boat Sushi, but I insisted they try Poway Sushi Lounge again because "it's sooooo good"). Anyway, our reservation was on point. Buuuuuuuttt, It took FOREVER for service, they didn't have Toro, Uni, Taz Salmon.. the list goes on. We had 5 people at the table, and having each dish come out one at a time is completely unacceptable. The sweet shrimp takes waaaay too long, yeah I know ya gotta fry them heads but this was ridiculous. They gave us Ebi instead of Amaebi the first time, and between 5 peeps, we had to sit and look at that one order of Ebi for a pretty long time. The miso halibut (?) was salty and small. They kept bringing us the wrong number of Oyster shooters. After the third time I gave up. Totally, for sure, couldn't wait to get outta there. I bring all of my cousins here for their bdays. The first time I went there was a few months and I was amazed at the ambiance. I was a n00b at sushi so I thought it was great. Last night I took my boyfriend there. We drove all the way from La Jolla to Poway just to try this restaurant out. We had a horrible experience. We waited over 30 minutes for our FIRST plate of food to come out. We only ordered a Chronic Roll, Spicy Tuna roll and Spicy Yellowtail roll. After the Spicy Tuna came out, we waited another 20 minutes for the next 2 plates to come out. The waitress figured out we weren't happy and told us that a Charger player came and brought his family. He orders off the menu items which is the reason for the delay of our food. I'm sorry but does ordering off the menu really make a significant impact on the time to make orders? Just because some hot shot is in the restaurant does NOT mean service goes down the hole. Rice was loose..even though they put unique toppings like sweet onions, flavors didn't stick out to me as much. they have a good happy hour deal on mondays where some of the rolls were half off. I've been here a few times and it's very good, but that's probably why there is always a wait there! I'm lucky my friend was there ahead of time, so I was able to sit down immediately once I got there. So, although the wait can be a bugger, the service is soooooo polite. My water was always filled and our waiter gave us just enough attention and just enough space. That is the reason I am giving 5 stars. At the end, tey needed our table so they could use it for a bigger party, so they moved us to another table. They were polite, asked and then took care of our desserts for us. They didn't have to do that, but they did! The rolls are delicious and if you can get there at happy hour, they are less expensive too. I went with the rainbow roll, Albacore special and my friend seemed to like her tempura and I brought home a lobster california roll that my mom thought was delicious. HELLLLOOOOOOOOO HAPPY HOUR! I believe they have happy hour everyday, but I happened to come on a Monday when they have 1/2 price rolls, and I'm so glad we did. We had a big party so we got a private room in the front of the restaurant. This place can get pretty packed so I suggest making some reservations especially if you have a large party. Now, let's get to the food. The Miso Soup was good. It's one of the better ones I've had around sushi restaurants in SD. The Garlic Edamame was addictive. Just kept eating one after another until it was all gone. Sushi Deli still has 1st place for the best Garlic Edamame though. The Chronic Roll was delicious. It has shrimp tempura, avocado, krab, cucumber topped w/ spicy tuna, tempura crunchies, and eel sauce. Yum! My favorite roll is the Red Dragon. Spicy krab, cucumber, sprouts, layered with pepper crusted tuna, and avocado, green onions, sweet and spicy sauce. I seriously am in love with seared ahi tuna and this roll is covered in it! Set in a tiny little shopping center, Poway Sushi Lounge is quite a delicious little treat. This place has about 10 or so tables, and a bar at seats maybe about 15 people. While being the sushi eater that I am, I will always find a reason to dine on raw sushi with my amigos. While first arriving, the shopping center seemed a little dark and might be hard to find the restaurant. My friends and I walked in and we were told to wait about 10 minutes. My friends and I stood outside, and when it was about 5 minutes later, we were greeted by the host, and she took us to our table. My friends and I glanced over the menu, and knew what we wanted. We ordered: Red Dragon Roll, Centipede, and Spicy Yellowtail Roll. The Red Dragon had pepper seared tuna on the top making for a nice little bite once you've bitten into it. The centipede roll has spicy tuna and a shrimp tempura inside with avocado on the top. I wasn't really impressed with this roll. I would have thought that the spicy tuna would have been more spicy then the mild regular stuff that they served us. The Spicy Yellowtail Roll was delicious. Finely chopped yellowtail with masago and their spicy sauce made for a delicious little bite. Also, they threw in some of the japanese sprouts. Overall, this place is pretty cool. I enjoyed reading the names of the different sushi that they had here, but I must say that, it all comes down to the same thing in the end, just a different name. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a little while now. I'm disappointed that I did though. The sushi here was terrible I didn't like anything we ordered. The fish was not that fresh. Many of their rolls are either fried or had way to much sauces and things on it. I like my sushi plain & simple the way it should be, rice fish and very minimal sauces. We checked in & for the free garlic edamame but even that wasn't worth it. It was too salty and cooked poorly the pods were difficult to open. I've definitely had better garlic edamame. A-OK, 3 stars yes. Been here quite a few times. I find the food here somewhat bland. For instance, the spicy tuna hand roll is not really spicy at all. And maybe they were going for the unadulterated/taste the fish style, but even then, the tuna seemed to lack flavor. Even the specialty rolls were kind of lacking flavor. The fish here does seem to be rather fresh though and I'd still probably order the hand rolls. I haven't had too much nigiri here but that might be the way to go. I will say that the unagi roll on the happy hour menu is pretty good and NOT drenched in eel sauce (but not as bland as one might expect considering the other selections). As for some of their "original" appetizer creations... they are average at best. I do like their happy hour menu and it brings some of the more simple stuff down to more reasonable price levels. Otherwise, things would seem somewhat overpriced for the portions here. This place always seems to be crowded. Expect to wait up to an hour on a prime night like Friday or Saturday. Service, despite the crowd, is generally good, friendly overall. The atmosphere inside is somewhat relaxed with candles at every table and warm decor. There are a couple TVs behind the bar to watch sports too. All in all, a decent place to have sushi if you're in the area and it's happy hour. I just realized I'd reviewed this place already and gave it 4. Take the average and you get a 3.5 which I'd say is fair for this place. We have been very well taken care of at Poway Sushi Lounge. Some time ago, we had a little issue with the service. The sushi has always been consitently top notch and the menu creative. When the owner became aware of the problem we'd had, she took a very personal interest, contacted us and invited us back as her guests. This certainly confirmed to us that not only are they focused on serving delicious food, but also that their reputation and the loyalty of their clients is very important to them. How could we refuse such a generous offer. We went back last week as her guests, my wife and I, our 10 month old and our friends and their 10 month old and were not only very well taken care of but enjoyed some excellent sushi, drinks and had a great time out. Thank you Poway Sushi Lounge for taking an interest in us. We look forward to many more nights of great sushi. read more

Yeah, no. First: context. Sushi in Poway is kinda like tacos in Tokyo. Expectations should be tempered. Second: Most reviews on this restaurant laud the fresh fish. Fresh fish? Really? Since when is that an arbiter of a sushi place. If the fish isn't fresh, it shouldn't be in business. Period. The truer tests of a sushi restaurant are the quality of the cut (Sushi Lounge is OK, not great), the preparation of the rice (pedestrian at best), and for me, the temperature of the offerings (poor, see below). But here's the clincher for me. I've been to this place for lunch about a dozen times over the past few years -- usually against my better judgment -- and I've never been able to get out of here in less than an hour. I adore this place! Poway Sushi Lounge is the gluten-free sushi-lover's heaven. For me, I'm all about the rolls. But it can be frustrating asking for so many alterations to rolls on the menu, or asking a million questions, just because I can't eat the tempura or I don't trust the spicy tuna. Sigh. But then there's Poway Sushi. They have a dedicated gluten-free section of the menu, so I know I'm safe. Tempura! Rice cracker crunchies! Gluten-free ponzu sauce! Ah yes, this must be heaven. My favorite rolls are the Crunchy Roll (tempura shrimp, crab, avo, cucumber, crunchies and the most delicious sweet soy glaze that makes it taste like dessert) and the Centipede (spicy tuna, grilled shrimp, cucumber and TONS of avocado). I've been there twice and each time the servers have been quick and friendly. Decor is not it's strong suit (lots of TVs everywhere, so almost like a sports bar feel), but the food makes up for it. O.k....first review ever for me with Yelp...so, here it goes. I'm writing a review about Poway Sushi not for just the food (Which is a hit and miss for most of the sushi places that I have gone to), but more for what its about. Poway Sushi is really a "Powegian" thing. I was there one time, and Shawn Merrimen of the San Diego Charger was just hanging out having dinner. Nobody bothered him, and come to find out, a lot of the local athletes frequent this place for lunch or dinner. My wife is addicted to the Raspberry Lemon Drop, (She swears to me that "It's not a problem"), but I will keep an eye on that. And, we really like the Happy Hour Menu. The oyster shooters for $1.50 is pretty good with Saki. Good food- good value-great service. I highly recommend it. read more

Quaint little gem in the heart of Poway. When I think of going out to eat, I never think Poway but this place might make you reconsider. Even though it is quite small, it is very clean and modern. Definitely more upscale than a hole in the wall sushi joint. My friends and I always come on Mondays during their happy hour which starts at 4:30 until close. They have a handful of rolls for half off, enough of a variety to choose from. Their rolls are huge so 1 is enough for me, two if you're starving. I've tried the fuzzy navel, the chronic, albacore special, spider and red dragon. All are great rolls, the tsunami sauce is FIRE (in terms of goodness). I favor the fuzzy navel and add it with cream cheese for some more depth! They also have awesome drink specials, flight of saketinis say wuuuut? Our waiter, Ron Jay, is always helpful and extremely knowledgeable on all things Poway Sushi Lounge. If he is your waiter, you are in luck. He is always a pleasure and knows how to properly wait a table. Thanks, Ron Jay! The dessert is also fantastic. I've been to Poway Sushi Lounge a handful of times over the years and after last night, I felt compelled to finally write a review. The sushi is not bad, and the service has always been great except for last night. Seriously, our waitress sucked but I still left her a $20 tip because I'm cool like that! The girl who sat our party of 4 us was pleasant, but our waitress not so much. She was cold and not at all in the mood. I can't put my finger on it but she definitely seemed like she didn't want to be there. We got the impression that she just wasn't having a good day. HERE'S THE BEST PART!! My dad ordered 4 different sets of Nigri sushi. He ordered yellow tail, salmon, tuna, and smoked salmon. When his order came the tuna was forgotten. Half way through eating he realized it was missing so he stopped the man (appeared to be the manager) and told him the tuna was missing...no big deal, just that it was missing. The guy said no problem and put the order in. A minute later our waitress was walking behind the manager, passing our table, saying to the guy in a snippy tone "I asked them if everything was there and if they were sure, they said yes". What kind of passive aggressive crap is that?? First of all she forgot the order, and second of all, it wasn't a big deal we just wanted the missing order. Again, I still left her a $20 tip on a $80 bill simply because I was having a good day! Now about the food! I super heart the Sushi Lounge! The food is great...very fresh and artfully prepared. The happy hour menu is very reasonable, and the menu here is huge. You can definitely take friends who are vegetarian or don't like sushi (they can veg up anything or have alternatives to sushi on the menu). My only complaint is that twice when I have gone the service was so-so and the place wasn't busy. That, and I love oyster shooters but here they are not consistent. The first coulple visits they were awesome but now I am leery of ordering because a couple of times they were really salty or vinegary. I don't know...it just seems they should be the same each time so I don't have to wonder. Fun sushi find in Poway! It was a rainy Friday night when we visited, and actually missed the place the 1st time as it was tucked away on a corner lot somewhere. The sashimi salad was flavorful and huge (enough to share, yummy ponzu sauce!). Check in on FB and you even get a free Hamachi appetizer. The rolls were also quite good, as is the creme brulee that the little one initially professed to dislike, but snarfed down quickly anyway. YIKES! I'm glad I decided to come in a second time before reviewing this place. My first visit was a 5 star-er, the service was excellent and the food was GREAT! I asked our server what their house specialty roll was and she advised me to order the Tsunami roll with ponzu sauce...it was REALLY good! We also ordered off their "Specials" board...Blue Fin Toro sushi $10...but only 2 pcs (which was NOT stated on the board)!!! In all fairness, it was probably the best sushi I've ever had...literally "melt in your mouth". Now, trip 2...I decided to take my hubby here because I had such a wonderful experience the first time. Our server was not very friendly and he didn't really seem like he wanted to be there. We ordered their appetizer platter, Tsunami roll (again), and a crunchy roll. Disclaimer--I'm not a super adventurous sushi eater, but I tried a few of their speciality rolls and really liked them. There was one roll that was sweet/crunchy that was out of this world. This review is an average of my three visits here for dinner. This place has outstanding service and it really feels like an experience when they explain the flavors and ingredients in each of your rolls and bring them out in an order suggested to eat them. The servers are so friendly and even make attempts to connect with us and our family, bringing in our young children. The last two times I was in we had Danny as a server and he was outstanding. It was really busy tonight but he seemed to stay very positive and helpful. And still took his time with each table to be genuine. The food...it is more American style sushi but we like that and they excel at it. The flavors are on point. Tonight we had the Cocomo. Amazing. I also enjoy the hamachi special and the Rosie roll. The garlic edamame is free with a check in and I've always loved it but tonight it was a bit different and way more spicy. Still liked it. Tonight there was a bit of a musky smell, maybe a cleaner? Not pleasant but I haven't experienced that here before and I will definitely be back. This is our sushi spot (when we don't want to drive to our place in Old Town). To finish this with a bang...Mochi ice cream balls. Made in house?!?! I had strawberry and green tea and it made me so happy. I was just smiling and laughing at how delicious it was and I can't wait to be in poway again to stop in for some more of those! That is on my list of food to eat on my death bed. Enjoy this place! This is my first time coming in, and they took nearly 45 minutes to seat me and my friend even though it was very slow. They told me to write down my name and number and they were going to contact me, but they never called me and I had to go in myself and ask if there is a table ready and there was more than two ready, but they never contacted me to let me know. And once I sat down the waitress with very long acrylic tan nails said "we are doing last call so if you want to get food I would order it now" even though they were going to be open for another hour and a half. She was very rude and this was a horrible first experience, and on top of that the food didn't taste fresh never again coming in very disappointed. read more

I'm going to pull a Randy Jackson (american idol judge) "This place was aiggght, dog" Came here because it was close to where I was getting my car serviced (tip of the hat to you blackberry yelp app) Started out with a crunch roll and the mt fuji roll. The mt fuji is one of their several "no rice" rolls (which I appreciate because I'm trying to cut back on the rice). We also had an eel roll and some peppers stuffed with salmon and cream cheese appetizer dish. Nothing really stood out as something I have to have, but I may come back since I enjoyed the service so much. read more
