I decided to finally try this place after hearing good things. I think I know good sushi, I've lived in several big cities and since moving to Durham 3 years ago, I have been to many sushi spots in the Raleigh-Durham-Cary area. This is not good sushi. Service was great, menu was decent and presentation was nice but the fish did not taste fresh, the rolls generally had no flavor, and they were not packed tight so everything kept falling apart. I would definitely not ever go back, especially since there are several much better options in the area! Went there for lunch and the restaurant was packed. From what I could tell, there was only one server. She was working hard, but we waited about 25 minutes for our salads and then another 20 mins for our food. When our food arrived, it was cold. Not just room temperature cold, but the tofu on my pad thai was refrigerator cold. We asked for the manager and she offered to replace our meals with hot ones. Thankfully, fifteen mins later, we finally received piping hot meals that were very good. The manager offered to "let" us take the cold meals home. So I guess it was cool to get 2 free meals for our trouble, but it's not like they were going to do anything with them anyway! A good manager would've compensated us somehow by not charging us for a meal or giving us a voucher for a free meal to get us back in the restaurant. I do like the food, but the management of this restaurant needs much improvement. read more

We've tried this three times (because I love sushi) and each time was worse than the previous. Loud and obnoxious crowd. Servers/hosts are rude when you ask for special requests such as a different seat or slow down the order. Parking is inconvenient. On one occasion the server only put in half our order (the other half was on side two of their order form) and we waited over an hour for the rest of the order. This was after we pointed out the blunder 30 minutes into our wondering what happened to the rest. He did give us a complimentary sake at my husband's suggestion. His only response was a, "sorry." I ended up here twice the same weekend. On the first occasion, I sampled some appetizers and was very impressed by the won tons and the dumplings with some drinks with friends. On top of that, great service and a nice atmosphere. The next occasion, I brought my sushi-hungry wife based on my previous experience with the appetizers. There's a conventional wisdom that says don't order curry at a sushi restaurant. That conventional wisdom is correct. As for the sushi, my wife says 3 stars. read more

My husband and I have come here a few times and had a good experience. However, this evening we were served rotten fish, and could not stomach to eat approximately half of our meal once the rotten fish was discovered (unfortunately in our mouths). The manager did not bother to come to our table and apologize for the absolute atrocity. Instead, they discounted our meal by $11, out of the $60 total bill, citing that we got "4 rolls free," meaning they removed a charge for 1 roll, and somehow the bogo deal that they offer all day everyday (REGULAR price) was the rest of the "discount"for not being able to finish more than half of the meal we ordered due to their rotten meat. Hands down the BEST sushi place I have ever been! Thanks to the BOGO sushi rolls every day of the week, I have worked my way through almost the entire menu and even when something isn't my favorite, it is always made with fresh ingredients. This place is one of my FAVES!!!! They have THE BEST sushi in town. Seriously, I've tried every new and existing sushi place in the triangle and none have held a flame to Sushi Love. Their service is impeccable, you can tell they take care of their employees because the same servers have been there for years which is great for developing rapport with regular customers. I'm not a big fan of sushi, but I went with a friend who is. I had General Tso's Chicken -- a fairly meager amount of chicken with no vegetables, and a huge pile of rice. The sauce was okay but not particularly distinctive. The lunch special included a bowl of soup (hot and sour for me) and a spring roll with no dipping sauce. Both undistinguished. My friend seemed to enjoy her sushi, but she's not much of a complainer. It came with a salad consisting of iceberg lettuce and grated carrots topped with what I imagine was supposed to be an "Asian" dressing. The thing that really stood out about the experience was the awful service. Even though we had come rather late in the lunch hour and the place was mostly empty, we stood for quite a while waiting for someone to seat us, then sat for even longer before the young male waiter deigned to come around. He never offered to refill my tea. Indeed, he seemed completely uninterested in us. I feel like a sucker for being polite and leaving him a decent tip. read more

Got to try 4 rolls this evening with the BOGO deal. Pretty good sushi that hit the spot but definitely not the best I've had. Also had calamari for an app...it was pretty greasy and the batter to squid ratio made for a much heavier (minimal squid) dish. Service speed was okay but both the app and rolls came out together (after we had to ask where the calamari was). Our waiter did offer to take the rolls back but.....would they have just sat back in the kitchen until we wanted them I wonder? Will likely return. I really wish more places would do BOGO on takeout orders. I only know of one place in Raleigh that does. The ambience of the restaurant wasn't anything special. read more

This is a restaurant that I have been going to for years for lunches with co-workers and clients and have never had much of a problem, but for a seemingly decreasing quality of sushi over the last year or so. My last visit; however, was so horrendous that I'll never return. I went with some co-workers celebrating a birthday lunch and we ordered some soups and edamame to start the meal. I've always been a fan of their Tom Kha and was excited about getting to eat some before our rolls arrived. When our server placed my bowl of soup in front of me, a roach crawled up onto the table cloth and scurried past me across the table. I was quick enough to capture the vile little creature under my water glass to show the waiter that there was indeed a bug near my soup. When I did show him, he neither seemed all that surprised nor did he really seem to care too deeply about this. I'm realistic and expect that most restaurants have issues with flies, roaches, etc, but I have never seen one in the dining area before. I alerted the manager as well as most of our party was completely repulsed. He was fairly nonchalant about the issue and was quick to move on from our table. We did manage to choke down our moderately priced, sub-standard roles that were all falling apart (they really don't seem to care much about presentation), but all agreed that this particular restaurant is being taken off of our "go to" list and I suggest you avoid it as well. read more

I've been there a number of times mainly because of their buy one get one free (of equal or lesser value) promotion. Otherwise I wouldn't go because it would be a bit pricy and trendy for me. I like traditional Japanese sushi, not the popular in America, inside out, drizzled with sauce, packed with fried things and stuff that in general doesn't belong in a sushi roll type of sushi. But that is just me **word of warning** The buy get one free promotion is misleading. The previous 5 or so time I went there, and got say two $11 rolls and two $6 nigri, I paid $17, i.e., one $11 and $6 order was free. They have sense reinterpreted the phrase "equal or lesser value" to mean just "lesser value". That same order would now cost $22 because you only get the lesser value sushi free now. I attempted to explain the semantics of the phrase in an impromptu English lesson, but gave up. They also insist it has always been that way, which it hasn't. Whatever. read more

One night my friends and I went here for sushi, and the next three days we all fell ill with food poisoning. Also, I know of two others who had been there the same night at a different table who also got extremely sick. Choosing this place ruined three days of my life. They even refused to give us a compensation or a refund for the expensive but poisoning meal we received there. They asked to see a doctor's note as proof, and as a matter of fact one of friends did need to see a doctor for his food poisoning but did have a note on him to show. I guess having four sick people who had diarrhea, vomiting, and body aches for three days was not enough proof. The service and food was not that great either. Plus, their rolls are buy one get one free... which encourages me to try a new roll each time. good atmosphere, usually has a vibrant crowd... it's busy but I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a table even when they're crowded. Over the last year and a half I have been to Sushi Love several times. In general, the food is pretty good, but the service has been consistently slow. Their dine-in only BOGO (buy one get one free) special has always been my motivation for dining there, however, I will not be returning to Sushi Love after my most recent experience. Today, after a long day of work, I decided to grab dinner at Sushi Love. When I walked in, I noticed it was loud and busy and decided I would prefer to eat quietly at home. The hostess informed me that BOGO only applies to dine-in so I decided to take advantage of the special. I ordered immediately and after about 20 minutes the waiter returned and said that my 'ticket' was lost and that I had to place another order. No big deal. Finally, 30 minutes later, my sushi arrived and I asked the waiter if I could get the check and a box so I wouldn't have to wait too much longer. I didn't see the waiter for another 20 minutes. While he was gone I noticed the 4 hostesses/employees that were standing by the door were constantly staring at me. It became apparent that they were watching me to make sure that I was actually 'dining-in' before they would bring me my bill. When the waiter arrived, he confirmed my suspicions and said that they wanted to charge me full price but he wanted to wait until I ate some food before bringing the bill. I understand the premise of the BOGO special, but Sushi Love was taking it to an unprofessional level. The BOGO special exists for dine-in only in the hopes that the patrons dining in will spend more money on other things (appetizers, drinks, desserts). Obviously I wasn't planning on spending any more money when I asked for my check. Instead they wanted to give me poor treatment, wasting table space, while other potential customers were waiting for a tables, just to make sure that I ate some of their sushi at the restaurant. Every single other time I have eaten here I have taken a box home. I can't help but think the employees here purposefully kept me waiting. The WORST treatment I have received at a restaurant in this price range. I will never eat at Sushi Love again. read more

Mildly disappointed. The RICE HAD NO FLAVORING ( cost-saving shortcut, untrained kitchen, dumbed-down Americanization, change in ownership?). Sushi rice is supposed to have a mild vinegar dressing ! The Rice was also a tad bit overcooked - wet and heavy. When newly opened, the sushi was very good, more AUTHENTIC. At least the fillings were fresh and clean tasting. Sushi Love will never be known for having a welcoming atmosphere. I have eaten there twice, and each time I did, I was met by people who did not smile and did not give off a pleasant vibe. The first time I ate there, I greeted myself to the Asian hostess, who was quite thorny. This time around, I greeted myself again, this time to a different girl who was as prickly as the first. It hurts them to smile, I think. My server today was the bald-headed man with the rough voice. I don't expect to be treated like an old friend, but it is very unpleasant to be treated impolitely. I sat patiently for a long time with my menu closed on the table and he did not acknowledge me, even to let me know he saw me or that he would be with me in a few minutes. After he walked past me four times without acknowledging me, I had to ask him if he could please take my order. After putting in the order, the waiter walked past my table several more times, and when I said "Pardon me, sir?" he turned his head towards me but kept walking as I spoke. I tried again later. After walking by my table AGAIN numerous times, I finally asked if I could please have the Diet Pepsi I ordered. He glanced at me and said "Yes" but kept on walking. He did not stop for even a fraction of a second as I spoke. Later, he walked by me again and again as my water and soda glasses sat empty. I finally asked if I could please get a refill? And wouldn't you know it, in asking for a refill, he again wouldn't stop for half a second as I spoke - he just said "ok" and kept right on walking. I should mention that this was after 2:30P, in case anyone was wondering if there was a crazy lunch crowd at this time. There wasn't. Later, when I asked if I could please have a box, he nodded and again just kept walking, even as I was still speaking. I didn't even get to ask the rest of my question, which was "...and a plastic bag, please?" When he came by with the box, he dropped it off and I said "Oh, and can I please - " and he said "I'll be right with you," turned around, and walked away from me. Later, in asking for the check, he - can you guess? - said "Yes" and walked right past me. I did not even feel like a real human being. He would not stand by my table as I spoke for the life of me. At the end of the meal, when I asked for the check, he pointed a hand up in the air as if to say "I'll be with you in a second" as HE KEPT RIGHT ON WALKING PAST ME, NEVER STOPPING to talk to me. And he didn't come back with the check until I had to remind him again. The way he breezed by my table all those times, unwilling to stop even as he heard me speaking, was unkind. I was not a priority table for him, perhaps because I was not a difficult customer or did not seem the type to be forceful. The female Asian staffers hardly smiled. It just did not feel very welcoming there. An unwelcome atmosphere where you are regarded poorly is never a good feeling. I would like to say, however, that the staff making the sushi was in good spirits, smiling and talking to one another. I appreciate people who give off good energy I do not understand businesses that take customers for granted. No one wants to be treated badly, anywhere they go, but especially when there are so many options to give your business to, I wonder why business owners don't make it a priority to appreciate the ones who do give them their business? You're better off eating alone at home than coming here and being treated with little respect. read more

I have been here far too many times. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but it's still my favorite restaurant on Erwin. The key is consistency. I've gotten rolls, boats, tempura veggies, and they've all been yummy. (One of my friends ordered the duck, though, and wasn't particularly impressed.) I enjoy my food every time I'm here, and trust me, I've been here A LOT. I wish I could say the same about the service, but I once had a very sassy waiter(not a flamboyant kind of sassy, either), who I was amused by, but who my friend found irritating. The only thing better than the sushi (and stealing all the tempura flakes off our shared plate of rolls) is the DESSERTS. I have an incredible sweet tooth, and I love coming here for the fried green tea ice cream. The thin layer of crispy fried batter complements the refreshing green tea flavor perfectly. It comes with fried bananas(spring roll style), so you don't have to order the fried bananas(a separate dessert on the menu) to try them. And the atmosphere is great--not too casual, but not too formal. I think the dimness makes it more...hipster-y...and probably appeals to the younger crowd(that's me). read more

I have renamed this place "Sushi Like" Its okay. Certainly not the best sushi in Durham. It is close to my work so I am sometimes forced here for happy hour. Ordered delivery and was informed 45 minutes later that their computer system had been down, and that they were not planning to complete my order as they had chosen to close prior to their listed closing time. Disappointed because I like Sushi Love, but I was told before the restaurant closed that they just would not complete my order. We are from Baltimore and very specific when it comes to good sushi. Yes, we are spoiled with very nice sushi restaurants. Sushi Love had awesome rolls, affordable with fancy presentation. But the best part was the server (sorry forgot his name), he even satisfied and created custom request for our two boys who are very picky eaters. We were there on Monday, so it was not very crowded but busy enough for us to be surprised with all the attention we've got. read more

Took over an hour for our pad Thai (we ordered without peanuts and without egg) the first time it came out it had peanuts and we sent it back and the next time asked for it to go (as it was an hour later) and then got back to our apartment and it had egg. We called and they asked us to bring it back so we walked back and they gave us a new one. Not a single apology, they still made us pay for it all. Ended up being awful pad Thai too. read more

Some of the best sushi in the area and very reasonably priced. I have also tried several of their Thai dishes and I have never been disappointed. My favorite soup is Tom Yum Goong and Sushi Love has the best I've found in the US. read more

have been giving this place a try again every six months for the many years it has been here since it is so close to work. Enough! Never again after today's abject failure. Waitress was sullen- the only thing that kept her from being rude is she hardly spoke to us. Miso soup was salty and lacked flavor except salt, salad was old lettuce and water dressing, the chirashi- which i thibk is difficult to do poorly was barely edible- in fact I did not finish it. The sushi rice lacked flavor was under seasoned, poorly prepared-definetly lacked the correct vinegar mix. The fish was at best tired, some of it old tasting... will not return . read more
