It's not my favorite sushi place in the area but its close. They always have buy one get one free everyday for dine-in only. It's located in a small shopping center with parking in the back. The space inside is quite big with a bar in the back. I never ordered their cocktails so can't say much about that. They have booths and tables and great for big groups. The decor is alright. They changed their menu and it now includes photos of the sushi and plates they offer which is helpful instead of reading a long list. Overall, not bad. read more

Recently tried the hibachi chicken and the basil chicken lo mein--I definitely recommend these over the spicy chicken! The hibachi chicken tastes like you'd expect from this dish, and the basil chicken lo mein is essentially normal takeout lo mein--I didn't notice any special basil flavor. As far as Chinese takeout in Durham goes, these dishes do the job and are better cooked than the spicy chicken dish. read more

The mister attempted to treat me to our favorite sushi spot that we have frequented for a few years now. The hostess / order taker (Karla) is rude and unprofessional. She lacks customer service skills. She needs to work on her active listening skills. She messed up our orders big time. No apology, just an attitude. Her response is "I'm a college student." We have been eating here for years and Karla just ruined that. Never again. #duke faculty and staff deserve better. She said I would get a refund. She didn't key anything in the register nor did she provide a receipt. She said I just told you you're getting a refund now get out! (Last I checked that's not how that should have went.) My work and I have ordered from this place multiple times and gotten appetizers and sushi and it was OK for the price. Then today we ordered for the entire staff (only 5ppl) and it was the worst experience ever. Then when we called to complain they told us that we need to call GrubHub for a refund. The only thing GrubHub didn't do was ensure all the sauces were there and only one sauce was missing. But all the bags were tied up tight with tags on them. So I don't even think this is a GrubHub problem this is a business problem. I can't believe I paid $18.95 for hibachi chicken and shrimp didn't get a single sauce and there's maybe a quarter of a chicken breast and exactly 4 shrimp and it's so dry there only moisture is the condensation left in the box. The chicken wraps which is supposed to be seasoned chopped chicken with water chestnuts looks more like cat food. And had absolutely no flavor. It said it was served with a plum sauce and it came with something that looks like peanut sauce but taste like cinnamon. It was terrible oh they did the throw in a duck sauce. So I spent almost $80 to not even adequately feed a staff of five only three of us actually ate any of it. And some of it was completely inedible. read more

"Great BOGO sushi and other Asian dishes" I pop by here for lunch periodically and enjoy their hibachi dishes plus a little sushi. Like Susan Z, I tend to substitute brown rice for white, and they can make any dish vegetarian upon request. Lunch dishes are $8-10 and come with miso soup or house salad. Portion size is modest- I tend to be still a little hungry after those dishes, but it's an acceptable portion if you also get some sushi or a dessert (or are a light eater). Makes for a somewhat expensive lunch, though. However, I just came here for dinner tonight with my family, and that was a more acceptable price for what we got. Sushi rolls are buy-one-get-one free (BOGO), and two rolls along with miso soup ($2) and salad ($2) can be an affordable yet satisfying dinner: ~$15 or so. I had the New York and Red Moon rolls- both absolutely delicious, and a nice combination together. My son had a bowl of soup and an order of dumplings- decent dinner for a 6-year-old. Other dishes I didn't try but that are there- pho, pad thai, pad see ewe, udon noodles, fried rice, thai curry, etc. They also have some great desserts- I like the green tea fried ice cream. Service has always been good or at least average when I've been there. Decor is a little dark but friendly. Overall, good food, tasty sushi, expensive for lunch but reasonable for dinner. Sushi Love is a quiet, romantic-er place to eat. This is definitely a "date place." They do the Buy 1 Get 1 Free special on sushi, but I'm not sure of any other specials. It's owned by Shiki Sushi, so I'm sure whatever is there is here too. I do love sitting at the Sushi Bar and watching the guys work here. It's a great show. You'll meet some interesting people here too. (Plus, it's the most lit area of the whole restaurant. Which may not be a good thing if you don't really want to see what you're eating) They do have a larger menu of sushi selections. I had octopus sushi here on a whim once. I can't say I'll do that again. Not that it wasn't prepared excellently, it just wasn't my taste. There's outdoor seating and a full bar. But the outdoors faces Erwin Road, and that isn't so pleasant when it's really busy out (like lunchtime or early dinner) But I'm sure for a late night the outside is quieter and nice. read more

A friend made a reservation for our large party in advance and when we got there the hostess said someone had called in and CANCELLED our reservation and that the large table reserved behind her was for a different party. Unfortunately, the first interaction was not so pleasant. The hostess could have handled the situation differently. None of us there were rude or even angry. If anything we were confused. She was immediately on the defense and was extremely frustrated. Instead of making excuses or claiming to not know what's going on because "someone else" answered the phone, she should have simply apologized for the misunderstanding and handled it behind the scenes. We were eventually seated after they confirmed the "other mystery" party was just someone else's mistake (their mistake). We were seated at the reserved table and things went smoothly after that. We ordered sushi (buy one get one half off). Half of our party ordered on one sheet the other half another. Although I understand a large party that only orders sushi is going to take a while, half our group received their sushi boat before the other half. Not only was the 2nd boat delivered late, it was delivered extremely late. Regardless, the sushi was pretty good. Weary of asian food in general in Durham, I opted to go for cooked rolls. I got the Black Widow and the Sweet Dragon. The Black Widow had soft shell crab, tempura shrimp, and imitation crab. The Sweet Dragon was a basic "Caterpillar Roll" (avocado + eel) w/ tempura shrimp in the center. The rice was soft and did not taste 'pre-made' then refrigerated. The service was good and kept our waters filled. Overall, a pleasant experience once we were finally seated. I'll be back to take advantage of more of their deals! read more

I think this is a good sushi spot in the surrounding area near Duke U. They've got the usual budget friendly BOGO sushi deal along with other specials each day of the week. I enjoyed the fried oyster roll and I can't remember what my second roll with that was, but not really worth mentioning if I can't remember it anyway :). Good sushi at a good price= A+ in my book. We ordered four rolls; the Insane Eel, Red Moon, and two others. The three people at the table next to us ordered a boat load of sushi, like a literal wooden boat laden with sushi. So grateful for their curbside pickup! Was a staple "treat" during lockdown, and they are always spot-on. WIDE RANGE of sashimi, nigiri, maki, etc to choose from -- including "specials" which I've not seen elsewhere. I wish they had more of the "traditional" options -- kampyo maki, shiso leaf, etc -- as those are comfort foods. Packaging will likely group "like with like" as would be served to table, so keep looking in other containers if most of your order is together in a box. CHECK YOUR ORDER before you leave to make sure everything is correct -- last takeout had saba nigiri not hamachi ... which is VERY DIFFERENT and does not travel quite so well (I like saba COLD from sushi chef or shioyaki-- not tepid from drive home!) Sushi Love is my go-to place to take new-to-the-Triangle friends. When I first moved here, a friend from high school took me here and I loved it. Because of that, I've passed along the torch to a couple other people. One thing I like about it is its flexibility. You will see Duke students in t-shirts and hats along with businesspeole after work in their suits and ties. The flexibility extends to the food, too. If you want brown rice instead of regular sushi rice, they happily accommodate you. I've only had their sushi, and I'm a fan. It's fresh, they have interesting combinations, and their prices are very reasonable. I came here for lunch on a weekday, and there was more activity that I would've expected. The service was fast and attentive. It had a clean and trendy atmosphere that was conducive to the business meetings that were happening around us. I can only speak for the lunch here regarding food, but the menu was priced very well and had surprisingly good portion sizes for a sushi place. They had the option of sushi combos which included soup and salad, or bento boxes that had a variety of small portions placed into an aesthetic box. In my opinion, Sushi Love is better than Mt. Fuji, which is nearby in Brightleaf Square. I love sitting at the bar where I can see the sushi chefs prepare the rolls. We ordered a few hand rolls, some white fish sashimi and 4 specialty rolls The overarching theme was that the rice had been cooked with two much water and had been sitting in the cooker for too long. It was way too wet, way too soft without any bite. It made the seaweed paper soggy and the rolls did not hold well. Ultimately the texture of the rolls was unappetizing and to make matters worst there was way too much mayonnaise based sauce/topping on almost everything. We've been regular customers since we moved to Durham 8 years ago. We've come back because of the food and the value of the 50% off deal. We've noticed a decent amount of turnover. Some great servers and some bad. Usually, it's not so bad but tonight was exceptional. Our server, Paola, was just horrible. It started with not leaving the sushi order form out. Standard procedure....wait for it...at a sushi restaurant. Then, it was not enough silverware kits or plates. Forgetting to leave out the soy sauce dishes. Common sense things any good server picks up on and addresses without the need for a reminder. The worst today? She questioned our dinner companion about her no eel sauce preference after it was clearly marked on the order form. This isn't the first bad experience. She's been consistently poor in her service and we're at the point where we would rather sit in a different section. So. Either she's just not cut out for the service industry, training is lacking at your restaurant or there's something else going on. I'm not telling you how to run your business but I am telling you she's jeopardizing a regular customer who has always referred others to eat there. read more

I went here for the bogo sushi rolls with pretty moderate expectations. I had heard good things about this place and took a look at the menu and saw that they had a large selection of sushi available and I was really excited to try it. It wasn't super busy when I visited, evening time on a Tuesday. But for some reason, our server could not be found. There were literally two tables with people in the entire establishment. I found her to be incredibly inattentive and she wasn't the kindest. The sushi itself was subpar. It was nothing special and found them to be incredibly over topped with various sauces. I deducted stars because I was very disappointed in the excessive waste produced with my order- the plastic bags, styrofoam bowls, plastic containers, and tons of utensils and soy sauce packets I never asked for. Please consider the environmental impact your restaurant has- that was ONLY my order. I cringe to think about how many tons of waste you must produce each day with all of your customers that come through. Please consider switching to paper bags, cardboard containers, and asking customers if they need utensils/condiments before adding them. I won't be returning unless the packaging changes. Much love for Sushi Love. Because it is a brief walk off of Duke's West campus, I often come here with a group of friends to take advantage of the two rolls for the price of one deal, a great opportunity for trying all the different kinds of sushi available. Personally TNT and Vegas rolls are my favorite. It's always a highlight to see how they will present the sushi as the orders all come together in one big boat. Their Drunken Noodles (and other noodle/rice dishes) are quite tasty and often not ordered as much due to this restaurant's reputation for sushi. Service has always been pretty good, though a little slow on the busy nights. Reservations are a must. Very decent prices for a filling dinner and a fun night out. read more

Sushi Love satisfies my expectations of asian food in Durham but those are very high. I did have a positive experience when I went with my friends for a weekend dinner, though that was largely because of my friends and the bustling ambiance than the food. Sushi love is definitely crowded on a weekend night, which makes sense considering how few sushi options are actually around. Plus, with the buy one get one deal, rolls are very cheap (about $13 for two after the deal). I ordered the Victoria secret (no rice) and TNT. Both were decent, though I was expecting more than five pieces for the former. Oh well. As many others have iterated, it's not mind-blowing, but it will satisfy a sushi craving. One thing to note: if ordering bogo sushi, they will charge for the most expensive rolls. So if you're in a large group all ordering sushi, be prepared to pay for all of the most expensive ones. read more
