We were excited about coming here because of all the good reviews. Sadly we left very disappointed. The service was really bad. We sat at the sushi bar but the waitress insisted upon us ordering everything through her which was fine...but she was inattentive, did not clear plates, etc let alone tell us about the available fish specials. She got annoyed when the sushi chef made suggestions and took orders for uni, toro, etc. She forgot our miso soup and when I asked her to remove it from the bill because we never received. she brought us a half cup in a to go box...which was really not the point as we wanted it with our meal. Wine pour was maybe 4 oz. There is a good selection of wines and sakes. On a positive note the atmosphere is great and although there are only a few seats at the sushi bar, its lively. The fatty toro was very good. The uni tasted of harsh chemicals and should be avoided. Dinner for two was $135 with 2 rolls, 4 sashimi, 2 wines and the MP fatty tuna ($21/order). Imo the fatty tuna although good was double what Tampa Bay prices command. We probably will not return. read more

Sukiyaki was horrible and grossly overpriced. All broth and hardly any vegetables, meat, or noodles. Definitely not worth $23. When I asked the manager for a partial refund for the overpriced dish she said it was my fault for ordering it and that she couldn't do anything about it. The server said it was the way sukiyaki was supposed to be, as if my father didn't own 2 Japanese restaurants and my mother didn't cook sukiyaki for me all the time while growing up. I know what sukiyaki is supposed to be like and this place is trying to rip its customers off with its low quality over priced dishes. I spent about $70 plus $14 tip tonight for garbage food and sucky service. The bulgogi was so chewy my son kept spitting it out saying he couldn't swallow it. I will never come to this horrible place again. Pissed off I wasted $84.39 at this place. This is a heads up to find a better place to spend your money and time at. read more

Been here several times, lots of takeout too and don't know why I haven't left a review yet. My most recent visit was in January for my daughter's birthday, 9 y/o who loves sushi ‍, with about 20 people (several being kids). They were great at accommodating such a large group especially since their restaurant isn't very big. I have always liked their food and usually get the Buddha roll but this time tried the Trainwreck. If you like the Buddha, you'll love the Trainwreck. Our server, Ahmed, was a phenomenal waiter and didn't miss a beat with such a large party. Although they do have the menu on a QR code now, they will give you a regular menu upon request. I haven't really been to any other sushi restaurants in the area since I moved here 12 years ago. And at this rate don't care to lol, I'll stick with Sushi Maru. The ambiance is cool, not too fussy. Not too noisy or bright which is good for me. And I believe they still have 2 for 1 drink specials, however it's only beer or wine. They don't serve liquor. My husband and I tried Sushi Mary for our date night. It is tucked away in a strip mall and the decor isn't terribly amazing however our experience was. The staff was friendly and helpful and not at all judgemental despite our excessive order. The menu was extensive and the sushi was fresh, high quality, and delicious. The rolls were good sized, well priced, and beautifully presented. My personal favorite was the volcano roll. My husband ordered Saki which was buy 1 get 1 for happy hour and I ordered a glass if plum wine. There are different specials throughout the week so I would call or stop by if your interested. We came by on Thursday night for dinner. We had a tuna taco appetizer, very good and liked the wasabi sauce on them. We had Kami Kazi roll and Sassy Girl along with Gal bi. The Kami Kazi was our favorite, the Sassy girl is very sassy, hot with sriracha sauce. The Gal bi was also very good. We will be back again to try more sushi rolls. We ran here for lunch, because it was a holiday and our favorite sushi place was closed. The menu was less than stellar and the service was mediocre. After perusing the myriad ways in which 'krab' can destroy any entree, we were left with few options. We ordered a few, safely American rolls and a sashimi platter. Rounding out with a couple Crab Rangoon appetizers, that ended up being filled with that stinking, gelatinous muck despite the title, we ate our fill of lackluster fare. This is my second time visiting Sushi Maru. My first time, about six months ago, wasn't good. It took some time, but I did want to try it again. The second visit was much better than the first. I don't like writing three star reviews, because I feel like it's a bad rating, though, it's not. It's an average rating. I didn't find Sushi Maru had anything special to offer. If anything, I feel they fell short of expectations considering the price. This place is super expensive for an average strip mall sushi restaurant. This time, we had the crab rangoon, Playboy, Red Dragon, and Sake Rotika. All three were good, but I didn't really notice anything different between the Red Dragon and the Sake Rotika. One is made with salmon, and the other has tuna, but the taste was nearly identical. They were just loaded down with the sauce, it was a little overpowering. The crab rangoon were okay. Not bad, but I wouldn't order them again. Overall, I think this is a good restaurant that gets a little overzealous with the sauce, and has an overpriced menu. read more

This place is nestled in the heart of Brandon, Florida. I decided to eat here for dinner one weekend evening and was amazed by the results. For starters, they have sake flights which I've never seen and any other sushi place I've been so far. The remaining drink menu is pretty extensive with your choices of other different types of sake, beer, wine, and Japanese/Korean inspired cocktail drinks. They have a very nice selection of Japanese and Korean entrées and appetizers. The sushi, of course, is the most popular item on the menu. My favorite is the dragon roll they have there. Good stuff! The waitstaff is very timely and friendly. The atmosphere has an incredibly trendy vibe with black-and-white decore and LED lighting. I enjoy glancing over at their LED bubble fountain every now and then. All in all, a very aesthetically pleasing and tasty experience. Great sushi in Brandon. If you like Matoi Sushi in Tampa, this place is awesome, because the owners are related to the owners of Matoi, so the food quality is similar, but the ambiance is much more new and modern. Staff is friendly and attentive. They have a decent sake list, including both Japanese and Korean sake. They also have a bunch of beer options. The sushi list is largely special rolls. I'm a purist, so I generally go for nigiri, but I tried the wasabi roll, and it was very good. I do wish they had more rolls that did not have mayonnaise as an ingredient. My husband is not a sushi eater, which is why we like Maru and Matoi. He can have Korean food while I get my fish fix. He had the bul go gi, and he cleaned his plate. I stole his kim chee and bean sprouts, and they were awesome. This place is very convenient to the big AMC, so start your dinner and a movie here. read more
