If I lived closer, I'd come here more often! Seriously, some great sushi here! And the atmosphere and staff are wonderful. I love the chairs and tables, and that there are a few big screen TVs around. The only issue was, my friend and I were unaware of their regular sushi menu. We were only given the specialty roll menu, and only noticed the other menu standing upright at the end of the table, well after we ordered. My friend got the veggie roll and Mexican roll, she subbed it with chicken tempura, and I got the Volcano roll. It was filling and fresh! I'll be back here next time I'm in the area! read more

One day, I was simply craving it, and came across this place...The buddha sushi I can say is probably one of the best things I've ever tasted. Fried PERFECTLY, I couldn't stop eating. Always consistent and down right delicious. My wife and I have been ordering at sushi maru since we moved to Tampa in 2014. They have been great every single time. Even during the pandemic, they make sure you get your food hot and organized. It's such a great experience whether you eat in or take out. Galbi: probably the top Galbi around the area. The marinade definitely tastes homemade and is very flavorful. I love how you can actually taste the Korean pears that went into the marinade. 5/5 Korean sides: I don't know what it is about the sides at sushi maru, but I feel like they're the best part. The bean sprouts with sesame oil over rice is great, and I can crunch down on the pickled radish and cucumber all day. 5/5 Lunch bento boxes: these are awesome and comes with some good fried sides. read more

Incredible food, even better service! I've been going to Sushi Maru since they first opened in 2013 and I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal or service on any of my visits. The owner Christina is just one of the many reasons I don't even bother trying other local sushi spots. She's so incredibly friendly and it really makes me feel special that she remembers my favorite dishes and if you ask for a recommendation for a new dish she can easily point you to something that should satisfy your taste buds. The decor is very modern and every seat in the place is perfect for a romantic date, business lunch or family dinner. I know I've gone on and on about the service, but the food is just as incredible. I love coming on lunch and getting the 2 or 3 roll special with a fresh bowl of Miso soup or Ginger Salad. My personal favorites are the New Tampa, Mexican, Bagel, and Buddah rolls, but if you're in the mood for some awesome Korean food you also have to try their Bulgogi. Don't waste your time at any of the other sushi places in Brandon, and honestly it's worth a drive from any place in the surrounding Tampa Bay Area. read more

It's located in a strip mall where there is an Outback restaurant too, so the parking can be kind of tight. Upon entering it's really nice inside. Very cool ambience. The service was perfect, very nice waitress. Started off with the pork gyoza which was good. Also had various pieces of sashimi which was SUPER fresh and elegantly presented. had the plum wine sangria which was quite tasty and it was 2 for 1 which was a nice surprise. I love Korean food. And I go to Sushi Maru for Korean. I really like the gal Bi. Cooked on a hot plate brought out to your table to make sure it's nice and hot the way I like it. The bulgogi is good too although it's not my go to. I do think the sushi has a lot of rice, more than I prefer. But the fish does taste good and has a great presentation. The servers are all very nice and attentive. It's a nice spot for a lunch meeting or a quiet date. I can say that I'm not a fan of the wall designs or some of the decor as I feel it takes away from the overall look. Only reason I give this place 3 stars was because the waitress had to deal with the sushi cooks heckling. That was annoying, but she didn't put up with it. Came here to meet a friend after a long day. M-Th they have a 5-8pm special on rolls so I ordered the volcano, wasabi, and red dragon roll. Let me begin by saying that having grown up in Los Angeles has spoiled me in terms of high quality sushi. As a result I am slightly more critical when it comes to eating sushi anywhere else. This spot knows how to make some legit sushi. The spicy tuna, which restuarants often cheat by just using sriracha, was legit at sushi maru. The yellow tail, which can be a challenge to incorporate into rolls b/c of its mild flavor was amazing and had the right amount of wasabi for kick but didn't overpower the yellowtail. Lastly, the volcano, which is a popular title for many rolls, made with different ingredients depending on where you go, was excellent. Cream cheese can be overused and maybe a giant filler for some roles to cut costs elsewhere. In this case, sushi maru adds just enough to add the flavor necessary to make this roll probably my favorite of the night. I have a fairly large appetite so three rolls was the perfect amount. The service here is great and friendly. Anything you need at anytime can be accomplished at the push of a button. I'll be coming here during my stop in Tampa no doubt. read more

For years we have come to the restaurant as it's one of our favorites even though we live in Lakeland, but today we had a very unpleasant experience as a hair came out in my food, it was under the sushi and I only noticed it when I was finishing my plate We complained and they said that that hair didn't belong to anyone in the restaurant, clearly it was not mine because I am blonde, curly and have long hair, the hair that came out on my plate was black, straight and short. This is one of the best hidden gems in the Brandon/Valrico area, it also is one of my top 3 favorite sushi places in the Tampa Bay area. I have been just about once a week, since we discovered it a few months ago. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. We normally sit at the sushi bar usually and they give us samples of new rolls that they are experimenting with. The food, all fresh and delicious. I enjoy the tuna nachos and gyoza to start. My go to rolls are Red Dragon, Sake rotika, Wasabi, and Caliente (I clearly enjoy a kick in my food). The sashimi is all very good and fresh. We have ordered the tuna, salmon, eel, octopus, and uni. Even the fried ice cream does not disappoint. They have a good deal M-Th for rolls. Along with a BOGO Sake and Beer/Wine happy hour. I highly recommend this sushi bar! read more

The only reason I'm giving two stars is because the servers were really friendly...even though one was eating during her shift. Between bringing food out, she would sit down and eat. Stopped here on my way to Tampa since the sushi place I wanted to go to was closed, and I'm so happy I found this place! Between the two of us, we ordered a Buddha roll, Mt Fuji roll, Super Mexican roll & a Diablo roll, plus potstickers and crab Rangoon to start with. Everything was delicious; from the crab Rangoon that had a good amount of crab in it and not too much cream cheese, to the spiciness of the Diablo roll and the crunchiness of the Buddha roll. Also, they gave us so much sushi, we should have only ordered 3 rolls for the two of us. I'm in Riverview a few times a year, so I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area. read more

We were excited about coming here because of all the good reviews. Sadly we left very disappointed. The service was really bad. We sat at the sushi bar but the waitress insisted upon us ordering everything through her which was fine...but she was inattentive, did not clear plates, etc let alone tell us about the available fish specials. She got annoyed when the sushi chef made suggestions and took orders for uni, toro, etc. She forgot our miso soup and when I asked her to remove it from the bill because we never received. she brought us a half cup in a to go box...which was really not the point as we wanted it with our meal. Wine pour was maybe 4 oz. There is a good selection of wines and sakes. On a positive note the atmosphere is great and although there are only a few seats at the sushi bar, its lively. The fatty toro was very good. The uni tasted of harsh chemicals and should be avoided. Dinner for two was $135 with 2 rolls, 4 sashimi, 2 wines and the MP fatty tuna ($21/order). Imo the fatty tuna although good was double what Tampa Bay prices command. We probably will not return. read more
