I've been wanting to try Sushi Maruyama forever, and it did not disappoint. The A5 wagyu carpaccio was easily the star of the night...melty, rich, and perfectly balanced with a pop of yuzu and a delicious added crunch. I could've ordered a second if I hadn't already over ordered. From there, we dipped a little with the scallop carpaccio. The "sizzling oil" ended up just feeling greasy, and it lacked flavor overall. But the hand rolls and nigiri turned things right around. Standouts were the chu toro, kelp-cured king mackerel, and wild young yellowtail. All incredibly fresh and packed with flavor. Gobo fries were fine, but I preferred the truffle edamame to start. And who needs dessert when you finish with grilled Japanese eggplant with house-made sweet miso? It was beautifully done! Perfect texture and umami-rich flavor. The service was quick & friendly. Important to note that the table limit is 1 hour. Maybe because they are a tiny spot. This is without a doubt the BEST sushi experience I've had and it's not close. I've had omakase quality sushi a few times in Japan and this was just right there in that level. For just $54 that was AMAZING! Most omakase experiences start at $220+ per person. We had the $54 omakase Ordered 2 pieces of A5 Wagyu nigiri Additional 2 pieces of the wild yellow tail And the agedashi tofu with mushrooms It may not completely fill you up but you can always order more pieces afterwards. My favorite piece at the time was surprisingly the Jumbo Wild Yellowtail I loved it more than the fatty tuna (Otoro), which is normally my favorite piece of fish. What a wonderful experience! The restaurant is extremely small & has only 7 or 8 tables total and 7 seats at the sushi bar. When I called to make a reservation, the lady was friendly and mentioned they are booked weeks in advance. Thankfully I was able to get a same day reservation with a last minute cancellation! Whooo! We arrived at 6pm with the initial dinner rush & sat at the sushi bar. We made a reservation for 7pm on 12/27 and we were quickly seated when we got there. The service was amazing and the waitresses were very attentive and also didn't mind at all explaining anything. We ordered a ton of things so I will list some of my favorites! Omakase - This was just amazing, I loved every piece of fish and it all tasted so fresh. We got an explanation on what each piece was and for the price it was worth! Fried scallop - I had fried scallops before but not in this style. It was half raw on the inside but it was so goood. It came out piping hot and was super crunchy! Blue Crab Rice Cake - I thought these were just basic rice bites at first but after eating one the flavors were exploding in my mouth. What a great sushi experience!! I'm so happy I waited to finally try sushi maruyama. I always saw a line each night (while I lived across the street) and finally understand why. Menu seems to be curated per day, specifically the omakase which is 8 pieces (not much rice either!) for $54. ALL the sushi were so good. I especially liked the yellowtail and fatty tuna but each piece was delicious. We also added an order of the fatty bluefin tuna sushi (5/5), miso cod (4.5/5), oysters (3.5/5), blue fin tuna carpaccio (4.5/5), and wagyu tacos (5/5, we accidentally got an extra one, usually comes with 3 tacos). Since it was our anniversary I wanted to order the panna cotta dessert. It was my first time trying panna cotta at all and omg was it sooo good! If you like eating a little dessert here and there this is the one to try. Not overly sweet, and perfectly balanced with the creamy base and tart strawberry top. They were really nice and gave us the matcha ice cream for our anni~ and that was delicious as well. Didn't taste too matcha but I enjoyed it. I wouldn't get it if you want the bitter matcha taste. We didn't feel rushed at all throughout our dinner but I knew the staff were so busy. Tamanohikari $30 300ml We got the Tamanohikari Junmai Daiginjo Sake and it was great. We had it earlier this year in Kyoto and loved the dry and crispy finish. Wasabi marinated raw octopus $8.5 We got the raw octopus marinated in wasabi with seaweed on the side. The octopus was very fresh with a hint of fresh wasabi. Hot Homemade Rich and Creamy Tofu $14 Many Japanese sushi or izakaya places have homemade tofu. In Sushi Maruyama, you can pick the cold or hot tofu with rich and creamy taste. The texture was more like panna cotta, but was a little strong. Miso Soup with Manila Stone Clam $6 Miso soup with clams was a warm and refreshing start. Chawanmushi $13 Love the chawanmushi with crab, shrimp, fish, and other seafood. Very soft egg custard! Today's Omakase Sushi $54 We also got the omakase sushi with 8 pieces of nigiri plus an egg castella. All of them were amazing! If you don't eat much probably the set plus a drink would be sufficient for a meal but if you are a big eater I recommend ordering extra from the menu! Recommend by our DIL and went there for my wife's birthday. It was raining that night and made parking a little tough because it's on a busy street and borders a residential area. I heard about their inexpensive sushi omakase and found out it was just a board of 9 items, 8 sushi and one dessert. The sushi was amazing! Fresh and delicious. I have many mixed feelings about this place. It's probably already common knowledge that it's very hard to get a seating here, especially for walk ins. I once arrived before their opening at 5 hoping to get a walk in, but they were apparently still full. If you don't live nearby, definitely call first before driving over! For this experience, we called 2 days ahead and were only able to secure a reservation for 2 at 8pm, later than we would've preferred. Once we arrived, we saw there were bar and table seats available. We were never asked for our preference when making a reservation, nor when we checked in. They just sat us at a table. We wish we knew there were options, because we would've requested the bar. The menus had a lot of options, and a lengthy daily special page was entirely handwritten. These types of personal touches give me cute family run establishment vibes that I admire. Then 20+ painfully hangry minutes passed before we were able to flag down a server to take our orders. It's a pretty small establishment with at least 3 servers working, but they were all either helping someone else or disappeared behind the curtains and it was hard to even make eye contact with anyone. When they finally realized how long we've been sitting and waiting, more than one server came by to apologize multiple times, which was appreciated, but didn't make up for lost time and added discomfort (remember how late our seating is!) and the wait already left us with a bitter mood for the rest of the meal. For appetizers, we ordered the Deep Fried Oysters in Sweet Vinegar Sauce ($15) and Japanese Scallop Tacos ($18). Well...the fried oysters were completely far off from what we expected. We thought the sauce would either be on the side to dip in, or a light drizzle. But the oysters came completely dunked in the vinegar marinade. The ones at the bottom were completely soaked through and soggy, and none of the pieces were hot and freshly fried at all. We thought the point of deep frying was to keep a hot and crispy surface, which wasn't the case at all here. The scallop tacos actually ended up coming near the end after our mains, and also only after they mistakenly brought scallop tempura to us first (no we didn't get to keep that). From a glance, the tacos are already small to begin with, and scallop pieces were barely visible. I mainly saw the other garnishes in the taco, and could really only taste those too. Didn't have any noticeable scallop flavor while eating it, so this was also a complete miss for us. Unfortunately, I left feeling like the appetizers were a complete waste of money. But finally, let's talk about the mains. We each got the daily sushi omakase ($54) that comes with 8 nigiri + egg castella. We also ordered 1x ikura and 1x amaebi sushi pieces in addition. I'm personally someone who would never order an egg castella if it weren't already included and see it as a cheap filler in omakases. The sushi came out in 2 separate plates of 4 rather than one by one from the chef if you were seated at the bar. I'll have to say, every piece of fish was delicious, and absolutely worth it. If I knew how things would go beforehand, I would've only ordered sushi and been much happier. Another thing to note is that our 2 person table was very small and cramped. Since the pacing of the dishes arriving was rather disorganized and the servers didn't clear our empty plates in a timely manner, the table got very cluttered by our main course and also made it more awkward to enjoy our food. Since I don't live around the area, it's unlikely I'll go through the trouble to try to eat here again. I'd be more open to it if I lived very close by and had the flexibility to spontaneously check for openings on any random day, but otherwise, it just requires too much planning in advance for a mid ranged sushi restaurant. read more

My go to Japanese food is Tonkatsu, so when my son wants me to experience Omakase I was nervous. My son has had many omakase experiences but he thinks this place is the best way to ease me into this new culinary experience. It is a small place with very limited bar seating so it was a shame we could not see the chef at work in front of us. My considerate son saved me the seat facing the bar so I could at least see some action. The only omakase choice is the 8 piece nigiri sushi so we ordered 4 sets for the party of 4. We also ordered 3 uni nigiris which I skipped as I was not that courageous yet. We also got hand rolls, grilled cod and squid. All eyes were on me when I picked up my first nigiri. No it was not my first raw fish but I used to take raw fish only in Asia. To the relief of my son I actually really enjoyed my first omakase! Each nigiri was like a pretty surprise and I was able to watch the chef preparing our food from a distance. Other than the uni I didn't try, I like everything I tried. The fish was fresh. Some might not have the texture I prefer but overall it was a good experience which opened a new door for my next adventure. If you are new to omakase and don't want to spent too much not knowing if you will like it, this is a great place to start. Make sure you make reservation as this is a small place. I have been wanting to come here for YEARS but never got around to it because of work schedules and other plans. Tonight, around 6pm, my fiance and I were in the area (we live nearby) looking for somewhere to eat and I suggested Sushi Maruyama! We were like let's try it, even though we probably won't get a table without a reservation... So we entered and lo and behold our luck - we were able to snag two seats at the bar for omakase (for me) and A5 wagyu for my fiance (he does not eat fish - I know, how sad). I was truly impressed by the omakase experience, the quality of fish (TO DIE FOR - and I've been to and had omakase in Japan), the kindness of the chef, and the service from our entrance all the way to the end of our meal. For $54 I was able to have such an incredible meal, and we were served very fresh tea (I think it was matcha or some kind of green tea, though I'm not sure). I told our chef that my omakase was SUBARASHII and he laughed! LOL, I really enjoyed that. I did hear this place is always busy but for it always needing reservations prior and having lines out the door the service is surprisingly not up to par. The one thing that bothered me was them dropping off 3 menus. 1 menu had both dishes and sushi. 2nd had a checklist we could mark and one was a drink menu. My partner and I didn't know how to order and if we could only order from 1 or all menus. It was a little confusing. We honestly just looked around to see how people ordered and copied them. Pretty irritating to be honest. I give kudos to the sushi chefs. They are very kind and mindful of the customers. The food is also exquisite and well done. For the food aloneeee i would come here. Chances are you need a reservation to minimize disappointment. I called the afternoon before on a Friday and was able to reserve an 8:30PM counter seating for 2. Located off the corner between Ellsworth and Baldwin is this impressive and straight to the punch-sushi restaurant. Shades down, you can see the entirety of the restaurant from the street. You'll see a chefs counter than can seat a max of 6 and a smatter of ~6 or 8 tables that can be configured to maybe a large group of 6-8 and a few smaller groups. Should you need a larger party maybe try buying it out? It's impressive enough for a first date, date night, or just catching up with friends without breaking the bank (well that depends on what you order). With many competing Japanese restaurants (of varying types of cuisine: ramen, sushi, izakaya), I always wondered about this place and finally made the jump after observing a friend's photos on IG. Casually checked their website and saw that most of their fish is seasonal from Tsukiji, premium short grain rice, in-house made soy sauce-I was convinced. OH and they have EGG CASTELLA (not to be confused with Tamago, it's kind of like it but way better, almost like a cake) Brought along a companion and we ordered, "OA" means order again: - 1 order Omakase (8 pcs of nigiri sushi + egg castella) -OA - Spicy tuna roll - standard, not as red/ spicy as expected - Crunch roll - spicy tuna with avocado and nicely fried, not oily but was a bit undewhelming compared to everything else. Don't get this if you are already getting the spicy tuna - 2 Egg Castella - OA - 2 ootoro nigiri - OA - 1 uni nigiri - OA - Popcorn shrimp - OA, better than Nobu's version, prob cheaper too - Crab soy cream croquette - OA - spicy tuna rice cake - OA, also better than Nobu's version lol I was pleased to discover I can order the egg castella (some restaurants limit you, because it is a bit of a process to pre-make). Please note the egg castella you can order differs from the one you receive (small with rice) with omakase (larger and no rice). We kind of messed with the flow of ordering by adding an extra ootoro nigiri and uni nigiri at the end of our meal because we wanted to try MORE. To no fault of their own, they hadn't realize to add the last items to our check so they had to void and recharge us. No issue but they were very apologetic for the error and treated us to dessert. We didn't feel it was necessary, but the Japanese cheesecake with strawberry sauce came anyway. For optimal results, at minimum: Make reservations ahead of time, order the omakase, any of the tuna, popcorn shrimp, and spicy tuna rice cake. read more
