Sushi Mon nondescript moniker and low-key aesthetic fits well with its hidden gem profile, even if the secret is pretty thoroughly out at this point. I was a big fan of them before the COVID. It was close to NCSU and my friends and me visited a lot. Their rock shrimp was a miracle! Glad to see them reopened this year. However, I don't know why I can place an order from them on DoorDash even if it's claimed no delivery. I waited for MORE THAN ONE HOUR until the dasher called me to cancel my order since they are "closed". I am not sure what happened but, please, fix your issues or be off DoorDash. read more

Hands down the best sushi place in Raleigh! And very likely the best in the triangle area. Sushi Mon in downtown Raleigh is an absolute gem. I was blown away as Chef Tom presented and walked through all the different dishes and made sure everything was perfect. He is so creative in combining different ingredients with sushi. I've never tried sushi so beautifully presented but tastes amazing at the same time. I tried many different menus, but honestly, it is really hard to pick one favorite. They were all so wonderful. The fish, rice and various other ingredients and sauces made a very complex and delightful flavor. Honestly, all the dishes at Sushi Mon are fresh and delicious. Go try it if you have not! read more

This place is fantastic. We sat at the sushi bar and had the privilege of being served by Chef Chris. Ordered the Nigiri Omakase, and we were very impressed with the sushi quality and creativity. Chef Chris explained the type of fish and the origin as well as how to eat it (in order from left to right, with your hand). You could tell he's very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. He also recommended the X-O Tuna, and it was delicious. Finished our meal with dessert - mochi ice cream and macarons - which was also very good. Our overall experience was wonderful, and we will definitely go back to try more things on the menu, especially their sushi rolls. read more

4.5 stars for Sushi Mon! The sushi/sashimi is superb! Everything just melts in your mouth, and the flavors are wonderful. My fiance and I made a reservation for Valentine's Day, and turns out they created a special 6-course V-Day special, including dessert! Oysters - a bit small, but entirely worth it for how fresh they are! Eel Bun - this one is not as worth it. Yes, it's small because it's an appetizer, but it honestly could have included a thicker piece of eel considering the price. Including a pickle was an interesting choice, in my opinion, but it wasn't bad. XO Tuna - YES! MUST! I was a bit put off by the appearance with the tuna being dunked in what seemed like soup, but wow, definitely order this! You won't regret it Scallop Crudo - Not sure why I was expecting cooked scallop. It came out raw, and it was intimidating, but an amazing first raw scallop experience! The asparagus is the perfect addition to balance out the mushy fishiness. The rolls are all very big and very filling, and of course the sashimi was fresh, and the pieces were a lot bigger than what I normally get at sushi joints. If you have room for dessert, don't even consider anything else- go for the popcorn honey toast! Caramel popcorn, vanilla ice cream, honey, and the perfect little piece of toast on the bottom- and it is heaven in your mouth. The only downside was the chef's talkativeness that didn't quite allow for the romantic Valentine's Day vibe... We sat at a table, not at the bar, but we could still hear him very clearly and loudly across the room. It was very unfortunate. read more

I can honestly say I had the best sushi experience I have ever had in the Triangle. Right when you walk in you notice that the decor and ambience match the high quality of the food. Chef Tom did an amazing job and we did a tasting menu on his suggestion at the bar. One after another we had delicious bites of the most incredible fish,. From tuna to amberjack to yellow tail everything was amazingly fresh and different. I have waited a long time for Raleigh to get a sushi resteraunt of this caliber and I am happy that sushi Mon finally fits the bill. I highly recommend it, you won't be dissapointed. read more

The restaurant is in close proximity to a college therefore caters to college crowd. Nice ambiance, beautifully decorated restaurant. Food quality and presentation were good. It's without a doubt one of my all time spots....went there for lunch 2 days in a row...finding out they are now moving to just a dinner opportunity. Meaning with my work schedule will have to change and make appointments latter in the day closer to the dinner hour. Service is impeccable, food beyond my (or anyones) expectations. Even Miso soup (so ordinary anywhere else) is excellent. (Order it!) Parking is a premium at this corner spot....no worries drive to the end of Friendly Rd and use the garage (2 minute walk)...adds a couple of bucks to a fantastic meal. Went there for a date night and first impression is.. oh, we're not dressed properly for this restaurant! It's quite upscale but we were wearing tennis shoes.. well, we sat ourselves at the sushi bar and started our fest. The wait staff are new but friendly. The sushi chef were excellent. We had a few dishes and definitely preferred the traditional ones. I know their fusion dishes are very popular but I just prefer traditional sashimi and nigiri. I'd say the most impressive thing we observe is how uncompromising he is with the ingredients. Best block of Toronto, uni imported from Japan, Hokkaido scallops which is extra form and meaty, amberjack and sea bream are all excellent and second to none! read more

Have been to the new location 3 times, once we got sushi- and it was pretty decent, though lower quality than the previous location. Another time we were turned away after getting there a half hour before closing at 2 PM saying they didn't want to serve any new customers. (I find this pretty crazy- but they don't give the impression they care for customers.) And yet another theme we were turned away because the place was previously full and empty tables weren't cleaned for new seating. Yikes. read more

Let me start with the good, the presentation was aesthetically pleasing, the food seemed freshly prepared, and I was excited to try it due to the pictures on Instagram. All of this was short lived after actually eating it. I ordered the Chirashi, the edamame, and the chicken Teriyaki. The Chirashi contained pieces of tuna that was seared on the outside, Chirashi is supposed to be raw fish on top of rice. Not only that, but the rice was overly seasoned with furikake, masking all the flavors of the fish. I have never (in the many bowls of Chirashi, at many different Japanese restaurants) had Chirashi with rice seasoned with furikake. The chicken teriyaki was drizzled with a yellowish orange sauce that barely hinted at teriyaki, the rice that accompanied the dish was also heavily seasoned with furikake. The best part of the meal was the edamame, I wish I was lying. If you're looking for dishes that you can photograph for your insta story and overly seasoned food prepared for an audience that has no idea what these dishes are supposed to taste like, then this place is for you. read more

I love the restaurant. Amazing food, very well organized, kind waiters, although the restaurant is smaller than others, it looks a lot better. Was so disappointed when we could not find Sushi Mon on Hillsborough St and just assumed it was another COVID causality. Heard a friend talking about this great sushi place and when I started looking, to my surprise it was Sushi Mon. Quickly got a reservation (highly recommended) and just had once again the best sushi around. If you like high end sushi, fresh cuts of meat, beautiful presentation, with kind and attentive staff this is the place for you. The place right now is small (5 tables) but the new place is being built and will be much larger. Chef/owner Chris was super nice and personally checked on every table several times during our visit. We stopped in to their new location next to our apt tonight on a whim after our walk, and sushi mon is now one of our favorite sushi spots in Raleigh!! The fish was fresh, and the rolls were deliciously complex without being overwhelming, especially the truffle roll. The presentation was gorgeous-- literally my only regret is that I didn't have my phone with me. The prices are also amazing for the quality ($12-$13 per roll). Much better food than BOGO options in the area and on par with more expensive restaurants like Sono (though I think Sushi Mon is better). The restaurant was steady, but our server was still super attentive and friendly, & even treated us to complimentary mochi and miso soup. We can't wait to go back and try more menu items. read more

Wow! Wow! Wow! This is one of my top Raleigh places for sushi. The quality and freshness is incredible. We indulged in dumplings, sashimi, and sushi rolls. The wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable. My only complaint (and I'm still leaving 5 stars) is that the sushi rolls were really large. I prefer bite sized piece and a few of these I had to deconstruct just to eat. We will definitely be back! My favorite roll was the red mango. Highly recommend that one! read more

I guess my issue here, and why I'm not giving 5 stars, is that this experience was nothing special. Our first time visiting. We had heard so many great things about this place from our friends so wanted to check it out. I had the nigiri omakase. The sushi was outstanding. The quality and preparation were very well done. My wife had the chicken teriyaki and she said it was just ok. Unfortunately we had a server who was terrible. Not sure if Eric D. was having a bad day or what, but there were many mistakes (wine service, forgetting to bring out the miso soup, forgetting to bring soy sauce and wasabe with the sushi, and bringing the wrong roll). The worst part was the poor attitude he displayed every time I had to ask for the missing items. The service was so bad and off putting that we will not come back again. When you spend over $100 dining in, you expect a basic level of service. read more
