Probably the best airport restaurant I've had. Granted this was my first time to visit, but the food was so delicious! I ordered the shrimp tempura udon - broth came out hot and fresh, full of flavor. Noodles were cooked just right, delightfully chewy. Pieces of chicken as a bonus! 2 shrimp tempura come as sides and they're nicely fried as well. It would've been better if they were lightly battered but I still ate them all! Staff is attentive and even if there was only 1 server for about 5 tables, she was really efficient and never kept anyone waiting really for more than few minutes. One of my favorite airport stops! And definitely one of the best in Anchorage. The ONLY downside is that it's only accessible when you're in the airport! The service is always amazing. Super nice and polite staff. All of their menu items are tasty and fresh. The salmon and tuna in particular are incredibly flavorful with great fat content. Presentation is always outstanding. This trip we had an Alaska roll and an order of pork Gyoza. Served temperature accordingly and perfect to the taste. Well seasoned pork with excellent sauces. Not even necessary! Just complementary to the dish. I would definitely visit more if it wasn't just in the airport. Here and there I find that I need to stop thinking about, taking pictures of, and writing about food in order to pay the bills; and when that's the case I hunker down and go to work for a large international airline. That being the case, I spend an awful lot of time on airplanes and in airports, and that pattern has given me an unfortunately high amount of exposure to truly terrible airport food. With that background in mind, I had the lowest of low expectations for the food options in the Anchorage Airport, but was pleasantly surprised to find that Sushi On The Fly is an extremely impressive option for airport food. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Sushi on the Fly is FAST, and that's essentially the most important thing about sit-down dining in an airport. You can grab a roll or dish to go, or you can have a seat surrounded by an abundance of televisions. The service was exceptionally friendly for airports, and I took my time as there was plenty of time between flights. Impressive. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? Sure - Sushi on the Fly is more expensive than your sit down Asian restaurant at home, but given what were extremely generous portion sizes I was impressed that my Kung Pao chicken, which also came with eggs rolls and rice, came to only $18.00. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? You might not know that Anchorage is a massive cargo hub predominantly for Asian carriers, and that being the case you can imagine that Sushi on the Fly probably couldn't get away with mediocre Asian inspired food. They don't, and I'll be quick to admit that my Kung Pao Chicken was certainly better than anything I've ever ordered at an airport Panda Express or Manchu Wok, and was probably more impressive than half the quick and dirty Chinese spots I've found in Los Angeles. The chicken tasted fresh, the sauce was spicy with fresh chili peppers sliced in, and it all came together nicely with fluffy white rice. With such a diverse menu spanning Japanese, Chinese, and Korean influences I wasn't quite sure how it would all be executed upon, but even the sushi rolls (fresh ingredient sushi bar on site) and Korean dishes around me looked of high quality. It's difficult enough as it is to execute effectively on such a broad menu, but Sushi on the Fly does exactly that and in an airport no less. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? I can't possibly give five stars to an airport restaurant - I just can't do it; and admittedly my meal wasn't the best Kung Pao chicken I've ever had or the best airport meal I've ever had - but it was closer than I would have expected, and if you're in the Anchorage Airport you should absolutely go to Sushi on the Fly. Similar to the other reviewers I was pretty skeptical of airport sushi. Wow was I pleasantly surprised! The fish was high quality and the rolls we had were really tasty (Sky Man, OMG, and the avocado). I come to Anchorage frequently and will be stopping in again. This is a review for drinks and service only, I couldn't stomach staying for food when the bartender was so rude. Blonde, over middle age, woman, low cut top, black baseball hat. No hello, no greeting, no smile. I asked if she had a beer list seeing they had over a dozen taps, she said no and walked away. When she came back, I asked about the beers and she read off 16 names in 15 seconds like I knew each one, very rude. She never even came back to ask if I wanted food but at that point I was done spending money there. Hopefully they have some good bartenders. When I got there, 5 people at the bar with empty drinks or no drinks, and she was no where to be found. If I owned the business, I'd want to know that she is costing the company money. Got through airport security early and the first thing I saw was their sign advertising sushi at gate C6. I was very skeptical at first but since I had plenty of time decided to give it a try. Located in the far corner of the Charlie concourse, not many travelers will see it when considering where to grab a quick bite before their flight. Sit at the sushi bar, the well-stocked and professionally staffed full bar, a people-viewing bar, or at a table. The place has been open only one week, this was my first visit, and I had some time (an hour) to kill. In the time that I sat at my table, a dozen folks have been served, cashed out, and walked away smiling. I had a Hendricks and Tonic, a side of wakame (special order), and the Sleeping Lady roll. Let's be honest, Anchorage isn't famous for its sushi, and this place was far from the "best I've ever had." But I am content. The rice is key for me, and they nailed it here. One of the customers sitting beside me had the spicy udon, which he said he liked. The menu is broad in its scope, yet not overwhelming in options. Went simple with the Bear Bait roll - and was extremely happy with the food - as well as the service and speed of service (speed being very important for airport food). The food is not bad considering it's airport food, however I had the worst service from eating out, ever. We sat ourselves down since no one greeted us, and ended up borrowing a menu from the neighboring table since our waiter took a long time to show up. We were a family of four, a bit pressed for time due to our flight, so we explained that to our waiter in hope for more speedy service, which was received with a dismissive shrug and wave (that there was nothing he could help with). When he brought us water, I noticed a large lipstick print on my glass immediately but he walked away already. When I flagged him down, he offered no apology at all and just took the glass away. When he brought us a new water we said "Thank You" with grace still, but he did not even respond with anything. He simply shoved/slided the water onto the table and walked away as if this were our fault not his. Our children were made very uncomfortable by his hostility, asking us why the waiter didn't say "you are welcomed" like we teach them to. We felt so doubtful and ended up not drinking the water at all. We should have walked away at this point but there weren't many options open due to COVID, and our children needed to eat. It ended up taking a long time to get our order, at least two parties who ordered after us had their food and finished and left before our food was finally served, and half of the order was wrong (ordered pork, was served and charged for halibut). At this point, there is no time to return the order and we lost all confidence on our waiter getting anything right, and we were most definitely gonna be late for our flight. A different waiter helped us with the check - otherwise we would have missed our flight indeed. In eat out for many, many years I have never had such poor service. It was eye-opening. I guess some people just really hate their job and have no qualms taking out their unhappiness and anger on customers, even when customers tried to be patient, understanding, and appreciative. read more
