First off, the food here is decent to good depending on what's ordered. However, the amount of food or portions in relation to the price is small, so it can get expensive. The service seems to be the issue here. I've been to this establishment on a few occasions and the service always seems to be very apathetic. It just doesn't seem like they care about you all that much. Though they always seem to be aware of you, they don't necessarily seem to care. Sometimes it feels like they're just upset with you being there. Anyhow, the food itself is a hit or miss. Some things are quite decent, but others can be a big "Oh... that was just okay." - Sushi: Ordered several types of sushi/rolls (Dragon Roll, Angry Dragon Roll, tamago, ebi, California, and spicy tuna). They were all good, but nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary. - Tonkatsu Entrée: Fried pork with rice and soup. The entrée was good. Fried pounded pork was delicious. Miso soup was ok and came with steamed rice. A decent meal. - Vegetable Tempura: Vegetable tempura was good, not awesome, but good. Came with fried a "small" portion of various vegetables that included onion, mushroom, pumpkin slice, red pepper, sweet potato, and broccoli. All in all, food is good. I've ordered delivery from here a few times and what started out so promising has become a bit baffling. I don't know if they had a recent change in staff, issues with their fish vendors, disregard for their delivery customers or if something else is going on. Regardless, the bottom line is this place has a lot of potential, but each order has been getting worse. At the very least, they have a consistency problem. I first ordered delivery a couple of months ago and was pleasantly surprised. I do think there are several differences in the menu based on which site you order from. For example, I first ordered on UberEats and it stated that my entrée came with miso. There wasn't any miso, but there was a lonely spoon in the bag like maybe it got left out. However, since some places do not include complimentary soup with to go or delivery orders, I went to their website to check their menu. I couldn't find any statement about changes for delivery orders on the menu, but I noticed on Door Dash it listed it came with rice and salad, not miso. So if you are ordering delivery, be prepared for a slight variation. The first time I ordered chicken katsu, which came with salad and rice for $14.50. The salad and rice were both very good! The chicken on the other hand was overcooked. Since the entrée was okay at best, this was definitely overpriced. I also ordered 2 pieces of salmon for $5.25. The salmon was some of the freshest I've seen in the area and it was well worth every penny spent. It was beautiful and I was certain I would continue to order sushi from here. Overall, the rice, salad and sushi made it a 4 star meal. About a month later, I ordered the chicken karrage for $10.50 and red snapper for $6. The chicken was cooked well but had a lingering sweet and sour aftertaste that wasn't all that appealing after a while. The meat was good quality though and it wasn't overcooked. Quality to price ratio makes this a better value than my previous meal. The red snapper, normally one of my favorites, looked very strange and had a lot of threads. I was trying to figure out what it was about the cut that would cause this, part of the fin or top layer? I took a tentative bite and though it also seemed fresh, the mouth feel made me think of blubber. In the end it was inedible and a strange experience. What happened? I ordered again last week which resulted in me feeling confused and mentally dropping this place to 3 stars. I got the appetizer sampler for $12.99, which is a small selection considering how many appetizers they actually carry. The calamari was like rubber bands, the gyoza was meh and the crab ragoon was so-so. I gave them a second chance with the red snapper and it wasn't blubbery, but it had no taste whatsoever and it was sloppily cut with an inedible hard edge. What is this? If this is a red snapper problem, how can they justify charging more? If this is a different sushi chef, shame on them for putting out a subpar product. At this point, I was ready to give up on this place, average out the various things I had tried and post my review. However, I wanted to end my experience with this restaurant on a good note. I decided to order delivery yesterday and get the salmon again. The salmon was less fresh, a completely different shade, and not that great. What the hell is going on here? I feel like I'm being punked now. It was excellent before! I also ordered the chicken katsu don for $13. It was one of the few cheaper items left on the menu that I hadn't tried, and I wasn't willing to splurge with the last couple of experiences being so disappointing. What I got was katsu don, which is pork instead of chicken. Because they crammed it all into a container, egg whites had stuck to almost all the protein. The menu didn't state it had egg, I'm allergic to egg whites. Is this their fault? Not entirely. If they had a detailed description, I could have avoided wasting my money, but it's not like they knew. I did try to eat around it, but the sauce was sickeningly sweet. I regretted the order and wish I had spent my money elsewhere. Each time has gotten steadily worse, yesterday's experience dropped them to 2 stars. I'm not going to give more money to a place that sends me such inconsistent food. I've been left with the impression that they are getting away with charging more for subpar food because they are in Southlake- many of their entrées are in the $17-25 range. I'm willing to pay more for quality and creativity, but that's not what they are putting out. Hopefully they turn it around and can recreate that awesome first experience I had with their salmon, but at this time, I can't recommend. read more

I came to Sushi Sam's at 10pm on a Saturday night with a group of 4. I didn't do any research before picking this place and I was really impressed. We started with waters and the sake samplers- 3 cold sake shots. They were all very good, but my favorite was the Haiku sake. Their menu options were bountiful. I opted for the samurai roll, which was topped with the most fresh salmon sashimi I've tasted all year. The rest of my party was happy with their sushi as well. I loved the prices here also! I was graciously greeted by the sushi chefs and highly impressed by the calming original charming personality the restarting had. Now onto the food all I can say is wow. This is my favorite sushi place and I'm surprised I haven't reviewed it until now! I've been coming here for at least 6 years. The food is always fresh and their rolls are unique. I always leave stuffed because I cannot stop eating. The rolls are large and plentiful. My favorite roll is a non-rice roll, Butterfly kiss. This is the only place that does this roll. Think California roll but wrapped with salmon instead of rice with a dab of siracha. Feel free to add the heat with more siracha. It's so good! So carb free dieters... here is your roll! All other specialty rolls are great and hard to just pick out one! I usually judge a sushi bar by the salmon and this place is top notch. The service is good. I think they practically know me here as I used to come once a week. Parking is never a problem. They are typically fast to get your food out as well. Tip: sometimes if you sit at the bar and it's slow, they give you some testers to try out. Not all the time but it's happened a few times. Definitely worth a try. Imagine my shock and surprise when I checked in tonight and realized I'd never written a review of this place!! It was literally our once a week dining spot for a few years, sometimes twice a week! We haven't been since the pandemic hit until tonight. The quality and tastiness is still there. I love their sushi rolls, the ahi tower and their fried rice is fabulous! I started a list on my phone of our favorites so we know what we want and in what order. My favorites are the sunset, the trophy club, the patriot and the monster. We like to order one at a time versus ordering a bunch of rolls that arrive at the table at once. The staff is so friendly and even though we haven't been in a while, when we walked in, our server recognized us and asked us if we wanted ice tea because that's our usual drink. The ice tea is continuously topped off and the glass never gets empty. Tonight our server told us they were backed up with roll orders so we went ahead and ordered all three at once, but the still kind of came out one at a time, the way we like it. I always get extra ginger because to me it really makes each bite pop. This is my third time eating at a restaurant since the pandemic started full force in March and I felt safe eating here. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Sushi Sam is located in a strip mall and has a sushi bar, main dining area, and private room. The décor is standard for this type of restaurant. There is a private room in the back that is good for bigger groups. On weekends it may get crowded and there is not much of a waiting area. 1/2 Stat. Service - On both my occasions to Sushi Sam the service has been excellent. Our large group had all sorts of requests and they never missed a beat. I was very surprised the first time, but when the service was evren better the next time I knew that's just the way it is. 1 Star. Food - Wow, this is where I was really surpised. Even though it's not in Uptown Dallas or some trendy area, the food is GREAT. Sashimi (Hamachi, toro, shrimp, salmon) are fresh and the presentation is impressive. Mike's Fried Rice is like a shrmp fried rice with an omlet over it. Our kids (and me too) LOVED it. Other hits were their Nachos and Peppered Tuna. We had a few rolls that were good, but were really overshadowed by the sashimi. Southlake can do sushi too. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Maybe. If I lived in the area I could enviwsion going every week. i love Sushi Sam. I use to go to Blue Fish in Irving before I found Sushi Sam. I have now been coming here for the past 5 years and it always takes care of that craving for fresh sushi. It sits in a strip center where the normal sushi snob would not go, but the sushi is always fresh and the staff and sushi chefs are friendly. Love the Butterfly Kisses which is just fresh salmon with ponzu sauce and lemon. It is fresh and clean tasting. Another favorite is the Ahi Tower which has the spicy tuna, avocado, rice with a nice dose of pepper. The sauces that are on the plate are quite flavorful. I like the keep the tower in tact and take bites from it rather than have the waitress mix it all up. Try it that way. Our food poisoning lasted a week and we could barely drink liquids because the stomach pain was so painful. I am so disappointed bc we have gone here for a few years. I've been here twice, once when it was a not-so-busy time and then on a Saturday night. Both times I had great and fast service. The sushi is terrific. I also ordered the trio appetizer which was fantastic and the price was great, too. For some reason their wasabi just hits different, like you're breathing fire through your nose but in a GOOD way. It's really good! The sushi bar is in view of everyone which makes the inside atmosphere great. I highly recommend you give it a try and I'll be going back soon as well. read more

My favorite would be the super Sam, it was hands down delish! Same with the sauté edamame but I would add these are finger licking good- so good you want to eat the shell. The tuna roll and cowboy roll were meh. And the salad could've been fresher. It's really hard to mess up garden salad but one way to do it is not so fresh Ice burg. My family and I lived in Fort Worth from early 2000 to late 2002, nearly three years. During that time, we tried a few Sushi restaurants in the DFW area but always managed to find our way back to Sushi Sam. They were the best in the area. We moved away in October 2002 and lived in a couple of different states but we recently returned to Fort Worth. One of our first missions was to visit Sushi Sam. I have to say we were extremely disappointed. The hot tea was served in cheap cups that transferred heat so that we could barely lift the cups. The sushi was soggy and rolled too loosely so it fell apart, and the Tempura was dark, heavy and greasy. In fact, it was not Tempura at all. It was more like fried shrimp and vegetables that had been fried in old grease at two low a temperature. We forced ourselves to eat the shrimp but left all of the vegetables on the plate. They are: Monday - Thursday: 11 am - 9:30 pm Friday & Saturday 11 am - 11 pm Sunday 5p - 9:30 p As I recall Sushi Sam was closed between lunch and dinner hours, so now they are open all day. Secondly, another "Why have I not written a review for this place?" realization. Sushi Sam is our favorite "close to home" sushi place. We drive past two others to get here. It's that good. We almost always sit at the sushi bar, although there is a dining room and private rooms. We almost always order sushi and rolls, although sometime we add a seaweed salad. Sushi is always very good, never a bad food experience. Lots of clever, unique, innovative rolls. We've never had one we didn't like. With around 50 rolls on the menu, the decision might not be easy. We do usually go for the Volcano (with scallop), though not on our most recent visit. Sushi Sam typically starts you out with a little amuse bouche. On this night it was bite of pickled cucumber. Also, during the meal, we received a sample of another roll. I forget the name, but from the end it looked like 3 or four types of fish, or maybe the 4th was non-fish. Very good, as the rolls always are. My only complaint is that, when busy, the restaurant tends to be quite loud. If this is a problem for you, avoid peak hours (we do). My lucky daughter, Social Gourmand, gets this sushi delivered to her house, but has been able to dine out more often since her son has become a better eater. The seasoned staff at Sushi Sam Yakitori Bar took one look at Mad Dog, and seated us in the corner by the kitchen. I don't blame them, and they were by no means inattentive to us - they whisked out the high chair and a lidded water cup right away, and we were checked on by more than one server throughout the evening. The fish quality is definitely a cut above average, yet reasonably priced. The most impressive deal was the child's chicken karaage though - an entire bento for $9! MD responded to having his own entree by eating all the chicken and two bowls of seaweed-heavy miso soup. SG and I were overjoyed by the amount he ate, and also by our beautifully presented sushi. They've already been back, but another family was already at their table... we'll see what happens when we introduce Hostage Gastronome to Sushi Sam's in a few days. read more

Had to put on a jacket because it was so cool in here. So it's a nice place to escape the 100 degree weather. Try to sit up front bc in the back there is quite a bit of commotion. They give you warm towels for your hands which were very comforting. They bring you cucumber salad which was really nice and sweet. For apps we had Shrimp and Crab rangoon which were both tasty. Had the lobster roll which was amazing in presentation. Could kinda taste the lobster but it still was still a pretty good roll. Even though i saw it sitting at the sushi bar for almost 10 minutes while we finished our appetizers. I've been to Sushi Sam countless times going back to 2000 and I've never been disappointed and they are my benchmark when it comes to sushi and service. Went there last night for wife's birthday dinner and no difference, same spectacular sushi and service but they had Blue Fin Toro on the menu. It came on 2 specialty rolls, the Colleyville Roll was spectacular as well as the Power Roll. Btw, my 12 year old loves their kids bento box with chicken katsu and their cali rolls. I've hear great things about this place and since I love sushi, I thought I would try this with my daughter for a quick dinner. We were greeted and promptly seated by a less than enthusiastic hostess. I wish there was a smile or a good evening when she sat us. But, after that, we were promptly serviced and the service was superb the rest of the night. They were attentive, but not hovering. No complaints there! The ambiance is quite nice. I really liked the dim lighting and decor of the place. It was all very relaxing and inviting. There was quite a large offering of sushi rolls. I decided on the patriot roll and my daughter ordered the California roll with the bento box. I really had high hopes for the sushi here and just was underwhelmed by what I had. It tasted not that fresh to me. The wasabi was also not very strong. I put the entire thing in my soy sauce and it had very little kick. I'm sad to say this will be a pass for me. read more

It used to be one of our favorite rolls and whom ever the new chef is there now, totally ruined a good roll!! My husband could not eat it! Looked abs tasted burnt and they added sugar to it looked like they were trying to cook a Cajun volcano roll that failed them miserably! It was uneatable!! We will never return to eat there. Oh one great thing I had was a tea! It was hot as I wanted even though our waitress questioned my choice telling me that it was hot when I specifically said I wanted the hot jasmine rose tea! My wife and I had it on our "Places to Try" Yelp list and decided to go there for lunch. It was a late lunch so we did not have a crowd to deal with. The service was good no issues. And it felt like a Japaneses restaurant. They had a good selection of Sushi, Sashimi and rolls. Being it was our first time we tried a couple of rolls and some Unagi. The calamari roll was chosen because it is uncommon. The rainbow roll is my go to at a new place until I know what grade of fish I will be receiving. And we love good Unagi and just wanted to try some. Overall the food was very good. The calamari roll was not very good. Since I would not normally order that I am not putting a lot of weight in that experience. The rainbow roll was very good. Rainbow rolls give you a nice selection of fish and if the fish is just okay you can still stomach it. This was not the case here, I was impressed with the quality of the fish and the Unagi was excellent. It was a little pricey for lunch but we did not take advantage of the lunch specials so that is on us. I will definitely be going back for sushi and sashimi. If you enjoy Japanese food you should give it a try. read more
