First time at this sushi place but my father in law comes here all the time apparently. They have a happy hour special so stop by after work. The sushi place has two tables that are on the floor style where you remove your shoes and then there are regular tables along with a rather large sushi counter. I really love the large Japanese flags that hang on the wall. The staff are super nice and attentive. They wear masks. We had some yummy appetizers such as the takoyakis which were very delicious, crisp and soft on the inside with not too much sauce. Had their crispy rice with tuna on top that was so yummy too. Beef Negamaki was just ok. The sushi was so good from the salmon to yellowtail to beef topped sushi and the lobster roll so good! I really think the quality of the sushi is good here. The cocktails were normal price and the lychee martinis is absolutely delicious! The presentation was also super cute - he shook up the drink and poured it out infant of us. My partner and I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and 3 sets of rolls: set of Philly Rolls, California rolls, and Avocado Rolls. Each roll came in a tray of 6 small rolls but it was surprinsingly filling. Service: 3/5 We were greeted and welcomed into thee restaurant promptly. Our server answered all of our questions and presented everything nicely. Everything was great but it seemed like after we got our food, all of the wait staff disappeared. Eventually, they came back and we are able to get the check. Vibe: 4/5 Upon walking in there was only 1 other group seated, which contrary to popular belief was not SUS! Last minute search for sushi spot that's open on Monday brought us to Sushi Sen-nin. The large open room is decorated with large banners with fishing scenes. No one was sitting at the large sushi bar. We had a table that was separated from the adjoining table with a wooden screen. We were glad the guy left within minutes of our sitting down. We each had a Chirashi bowl. Each negiri had a topping of different spice levels. I took them off to enjoy the taste of the fish. I'd order no toppings next time. I found Sushi Sen-Nin by walking across the street from my hotel (Hilton). They have an outdoor seating option on the street which is covered but I chose to sit inside. I'm dining alone and it felt comfortable eating at a table for two where I can check everyone out and what they're ordering! I first ordered Black Cod Misozaki (marinated in Miso & lightly grilled (I think). It was delicious and prepared with delicately sliced avocado and ikura eggs (salmon roe). Ordered takeout from here as part of the covid version of restaurant week, and it was great! Every part of the sushi bento box was delicious, except maybe the plastic tray. Solid family-owned sushi spot in Midtown (especially if you have a group!) I know everyone's in love with east village and wants to go to tiny izakaya counter bars, but, if you want some solid sake options and good fish, this is your midtown go to. Their unassuming front door opens up into a rather large and spacious interior, and there's well-made outside seating for open air dining if you're still worried about COVID stuff. If you've ever been to Japan, the interior may be a fun throwback. Sen-nin's menu runs from fun creative items like the fish tacos (my recommendation is the spicy tuna- not too spicy, and you do not need to dip in soy sauce. Consume as is, and enjoy the finely chopped fish and crunchy taco), to classic hand pressed nigiri sushi we all know, to some lesser known but equally classic Japanese rolls, like the kanpyo, a sort of marinated gourd. Simple but nostalgic, for many. My guilty pleasure is their oyster shot (shooter?) , and when they have it, the uni. The brinyness of the seafood with the delicate sweetness of the sake is...decadent. Take a deep breath, slurp it all in one go. Don't knock it til you try it ;) There are other fun Japanese flavor-inspired cocktails if oyster isn't your thing. Service may not be *the* fastest but it's always friendly and with a smile. The place was so quiet, which is nice to find in midtown, but it could feel uncomfortable. The huge colorful decorations on the wall are pretty to look at, but feel so out of place and a tad gaudy. They do have these little nooks on the side of the restaurant that you can sit in with one other person in complete privacy, so that's a very cool and unusual aspect that I dug. There's a $20 minimum per person, which is so unpleasant. Why can't you just get what you want? This left me with a bad taste in my mouth. In terms of food, there were hits and misses. Edamame - unsalted and a big portion! I loved. Baked mussels appetizer - didn't like at all. The actual mussel was good, but the toppings made it goopy and gross. Why so much mayo on something so naturally raw and delicious? Eel sashimi - perhaps the best piece of eel I've had lately. My Yelp score: 4.5 stars for all ... food/service/and ambiance. Wow, what a space! Recently renovated dining areas boast Tatami style seating, cozy banquettes, or standard table seating. This is my third time here and the bright banners and loud decor never gets old. It's warm yet spacious with its high ceilings and more relaxed vibe without the previously boring setup. This sushi spot offers an upscale dining experience without the pretense. Not sure why some Yelpers were taken aback by the prices - did they NOT notice the Michelin & Zagat ratings at the door?! The $$$ signs hold true...this is not your run of the mill Japanese/local hood restaurant. I only come here for special occasions knowing the cost and expectations of the quality of food I'm going to get. I came here on a Tuesday night, around 6:30pm, not terribly busy but as the night went on, the tables were filling up. My party of five were excited to dine here and given I was the experienced diner, I was trusted to order for the table. While I am always happy to order the items as listed in the menu, I like to have more control over what sushi/sashimi I will consume. So sometimes it is more economical to order as listed, it's not as fun! For this evening's visit, we sampled an array of dishes that the restaurant is known for and some usual Japanese staples. Our awesome waiter, Yong Wu, was super attentive and checked on us frequently. He also was well versed in the explanation of some dishes and offered great suggestions which we did partake in a few. Started off with the oysters appetizer, light yuzu drizzle to give it a complimentary flavor w/ the citrus undertones. The oysters were served in the shell, medium sized for the most part, garnished with scallions and roe, it was a great app to share (6 pcs one order). This was recommended by Yong and we agree, it was delicious and worth the price tag. Another appetizer that was a hit was the broiled squid. Smoky and charred to a beautiful color, hint of spiciness (sauce was hidden beneath the entire presentation). This is a must try - best for groups given the portion. It was a large plate...not meant for two. Other appetizer we liked: "Kome crispy rice" spicy salmon crispy rice and the tuna crispy rice - as we couldn't decide which flavor, we ordered both (3 pcs per order). I personally liked the spicy tuna more but both were excellent. The rice was crisp, browned slightly, and the fish on top gave it a great texture when taking a bite. We found this to be a unique combo and it was a favorite for the night. For dinner, I asked Yong to have the sushi chefs get creative...we wanted the boat presentation and so I selected specific pieces of sushi and sashimi so they could make it. All about the presentation folks - outstanding and beautifully done. Unlike previous Yelp photos where folks had the boat display, it was lacking garnish and body. Our boat not only looked appetizing, it was filled to max capacity with our choice selections. Not for the faint of heart, this selection was not cheap. Each item was ordered a la carte with the exception of the "sashimi deluxe" I requested they add to make it complete - also because it offered snow crab as part of the deluxe option. The photo you will see shows: giant clams in the shell - cut up in pieces and easy to share, a nice display of the young Hamachi, scallop, salmon, tuna, and fluke sashimi. Ordered also a few rolls (options were seaweed on the outside vs seaweed on the inside which I took advantage of): avocado roll, eel roll, and the salmon skin roll. All presented over a bed of shredded radish (sometimes referred to as garnish - which I do eat) and sliced cucumbers adorned the rows in between pieces. We almost had no room but managed two desserts after the impressive boat display. We tried the fried ice cream (green tea flavor) topped w/ red bean paste and the green tea brulee. (I think I may have forgotten to take photos, whoops)! We were also given some samples of the in-house made green tea chocolate. The desserts were all good but not what they are famous for so ok to skip if already maxed on budget. :-) Will definitely eat here again and I hope I get Yong as my server...I'll likely request him anyway! read more

This is a very good local sushi spot that takes their sushi very seriously! The layout is nice with traditional Japanese seating and normal American seating. The staff is very friendly and serves the food quickly. Both times I came here, I had a combination of sushi and sashimi. The fish was very fresh and flavorful. They also have special rolls that are very good. The downside is that this place is pricy. I get it for a Saturday night but for a mid-week lunch it is a bit expensive - 2 people = $70 + bill. read more

I love sushi and eat them at least once every week. The sushi and rolls at this restaurant is unique as they add flavors to spice it up. However, please be careful as this restaurant tends to think fish and some meats are part of vegetarian sushi rolls. If you are particular on the basic ingredients such as the rice itself, it is not fantastic. Although the staff were very good and the atmosphere is fine the sushi and tofu were not for me. For entree, I had a cold tofu dish which usually highlights the taste of the tofu. This was all about the overpowering sauces, jalapeño, spicy and souped up soy. Did nothing for the tofu. Price is about the only upscale experience. The menu is completely uninteresting but serviceable. If you are across the street and desperate for sushi immediately, this will do fine. read more

Favorite sushi spot in the city! I spotted it a long time ago when I still worked in 2park ave and they were located on 34 street. Still come to dine here right before heading home. Slices of sushi is appropriate considering the price. I prefer a la carte since the Japan fishes are a treat to taste and savor vs the basic Matsu sushi/sets. The typical stuff is good but I live for the exotic fish which is an experience with each bite. If you're getting the rolls you're doing something wrong-super beginner style homies. The sushi clock on the wall told me it was time to get raw. What it did not tell me was that it would cost me all of my babysitting money. The Nigiri Zushi entree consisting of 5 pieces of fish, a spicy tuna roll, served with miso soup was $22. Add on a little salmon sashimi and you've got a simple meal that rounded out around $30. Granted, I understand that this is New York. I expect things to be a bit pricey. However, I come from a land where you can get some pretty decent sushi at a much more affordable price. Price aside, my meal was excellent. The fish was of high quality, presentation was beautiful and service was wonderful. Was it the best sushi EVAR? No. But it was really quite good. After failing time and time again in such sub-par and mediocre sushi spots, Sushi Sennin seemed pretty good, it got rave reviews, so I had to try it out. REDEMPTION WAS IN SIGHT!!!!! This was the most confusing and appetizing menu I've ever seen because I was simply baffled and didn't know what to get. No problem, my friends Sapporo and $3.50 Sake were nearby to aid my sushi quest. After 15 minutes of debating to myself and my co-worker, with some much needed input from our server, I THINK we were finally able to place our order. The white tuna carpaccio crunch sounded really good, and the waiter easily convinced us to get 5 pcs. We also ordered Tuna Toro, a soft shell crab roll and their infamous Rainbow Roll. One more sake later, and the tuna crunch arrives. OMG..... I have to say this was the best thing we purchased the whole entire meal. A fried tempura shell topped with fresh white tuna garnished with seaweed. It looked so scrumptious and it tasted like crack. We should have gotten 50 instead of 5 but I settled for another sake instead. Those appetizers vanished before they even had a chance. One more sake down, the rest of the meal arrives: a gargantuan rainbow roll surrounded by Tuna Toro and a soft shell crab roll. My eyes wandered at the plate that lay before us, my mouth salivating, not even knowing where to begin. No problem, one more round of sake to help make the decision easier. Thank you Mr. Waiter!!! The soft shell crab roll was the first victim. No soy sauce needed, just a little dash of wasabi and down the hatch. Next up was the rainbow roll. I wasn't used to eating so much fish in one roll but there a first time for everything. The rainbow roll was packed with so many different kinds of fish, so thick and very fresh. I've never had tuna toro but that was also insanely fresh. The tuna carpaccio crunch was by far the best thing we ordered for that meal. Sushi Sennin had definitely made up for all the previous places that should be disgraced to call themselves sushi bars. Yes, it's expensive--but no more than Sushi Yasuda or the other top end susiyas. That seems to be the negative which people focus on. But it has some of the freshest fish in NYC, and if you examine the menu carefully; there are reasonable choices. And frankly, the price/value/quality relationship is in synch so suck it up and enjoy. At lunch, ask for the lunch specials. If you don't ask, you might not get that menu; but there are some excellent sushi combination choices. At dinner, go to the back of the menu and start by order one of the set sashimi or sushi courses. Add in ala carte as needed. Accent with a special yakitori from their authentic grill. That's the key to staying on the reasonable and high quality side here. Lots of choices for seating. The bar, the sushi bar, the yakitori bar, several Japanese seating style private area, plus booths and tables. So, if you're intimidated by having lots of choices, don't go here. I love surprises and I love sushi, so my friend made reservations for us at Sushi Sen-nin for dinner on at Saturday night at 7:30PM. He saw that it was Zagat rated and thought that I would enjoy our experience there. There was a lot of weekend traffic coming into the city, so we were late for our reservation, but to our surprise there were only 2 other private booths that were filled and we were immediately seated and we didn't even need to make a reservation. The lack of customers should have clued us in on what dinner was going to be like. Which wasn't great. We were given a private booth for two which was great, but our table was wobbly and uneven and tight to easily get in and out of. We had three different servers, one who took our drink order, another who took our initial order, and another who stayed with us the rest of the evening to take the remainder of our order and checked in on us as the evening progressed. Our third waiter was clearly new and didn't really know what he was doing. Our second waiter was more experienced, but stood in the back all night on her phone in plain site of all the customers. We ordered a bottle of sake, which was way too overpriced, even for NYC prices, but it was clean and tasty. For food we ordered: - Soft Shell Crab Tempura: The second server recommended this as she said it was soft shell crab season. It came with one deep fried soft shell crab and a few pieces of vegetable tempura. - Tsukiji Taco: We ordered spicy tuna for the Tsukiji Taco and it was good, but definitely two small pieces which could be eated in three bites. - Royal Sen Nin Roll - A variety of fish enveloped by a variety of colorful topiko. A beautiful presentation, and quite tasty. - A Variety of Sushi Pieces - Scallop, ikura, toro, and a white fish. We had initially ordered different fish at the second server's recommendation. She told us that it was fresh and really good that night, only to be told later by our third server that the sushi chef had told him to tell us that he recommended we don't order it as they were not fresh and of poor quality. My friend's guess is that the restaurant saw how much money we were spending and didn't want to serve us bad fish. Ultimately, the food we ordered was ok, but that was after our back and forth with the servers which kept changing throughout the evening, told us different things, and were poorly trained. Servers are a part of the dining experience and should be well versed on the menu (which they weren't), shouldn't be standing in view of the customers on their phone, and shouldn't be changing throughout the night. By the end of our dinner a few more tables were filled, but the restaurant as a whole remained empty. In NYC, on a Saturday night during prime dinner hours, this should not be the case, and we left not understanding how Sushi Sen-nin could be Zagat rated. read more

Sushi Sen-Nin is another one of my favorite restaurants within five minutes of where I live so we tried to visit as often as we can. We always enjoy a wonderful selection of daily fish selection with some hot and cold appetizers to go with a bottle of sake. This place has been around for years. It used to be located on 34th street up until they lost their lease. Then they closed the place and it remained in limbo until they opened up an Upper East Side location. After that they found the current location which moved the operation and closed the Upper East location. Restaurant is pretty large considering some others in this area. As soon as you walk in there is a bar area with full selection of cocktails, wine, beer, sake and special drinks.After the bar area there are two tatami rooms for small parties but these rooms are open so you don't get much privacy. If you are looking for privacy they do have a private room upstairs which most people don't even know about it but trust me, it's there and they will show it to you if you are planning a private party. Main dining room is a one large square with small tables in the center, long sushi bar on the right and few small banquette tables on the left hand side. Their menu is quiet extensive and covers almost every angle of Japanese cuisine. We normally start with few appetizers like Izuzukuri - thinly sliced fluke, sweet shrimp tempura, Tokyo spicy wings, avocado salad, few yakitori selection with a large bottle of cold sake. They don't have a large selection of sake but they are carefully selected for anyone to find a bottle they like. After the appetizers we normally leave the sashimi selection to our server,. after few years of visiting most of the staff already know what we like and decide on our behalf from the daily list of fish from all over the world. After that we finish with a special roll if we are still hungry. They are not the cheapest option in the area but I always say cheap and raw fish should not be in the same sentence... For the quality of the fish and the attentiveness of the service justifies the cost of the meal. Don't get me wrong they are no where as expensive as Yasuda or Gari or even Haru so you don't need to empty your bank account before going over. Also if you stick with the regulars instead of the exotic daily fish then there is nothing you need to be concerned about. Next time in the area give them a try and see for yourself. Terrible. Terrible costumer service. Manager argued with me about my allergy when I had to send food back. I'm truly appalled. **they use sauces on their sushi rice, as opposed to just plain white rice; and the menu DOES NOT indicate anywhere in the SUSHI section of the menu that there is risk for allergens. Upon my request for plain rice, I was argued with and questioned about my allergy by the manager. This restaurant is right up the block from my job. So decided to give it a try on a Friday night. Very quite nice sushi restaurant. I sat by the bar my waiter was very nice his name is Israel OMG he's the sweetest person ever). So for my appetizer I order the Kumamoto oysters which was very good! different from regular oysters served cold of course with yuzu sauce and scallions to top it off, then for my entree I order the Chilean sea bass! Very good! Nice soft to texture seasoned well! After that I order California rolls look's good in the picture but the whole sushi roll fell apart before it even got into my mouth was just awful! In the madness of midtown, this place is a true gem. One of my favorite sushi spots in the city to just dig in and grab lunch to catch up. It's got a ton of great options and my signature favorite, crispy rice rolls with tuna on top. There's a special name... and I'm not going to remember it for this review, but just ask for the crispy rice app! The salad is a great size if you're looking for something to compliment to your sushi, sashimi, and apps. Ordered the sashimi deluxe with miso soup. I liked the portions and quality of fish was average, nothing to be excited about but for the price I anticipated higher quality. The service was good. I had multiple people ensure I had everything I needed and would politely each time confirm their understanding of what I was asking. The decorations were a bit much and the music was odd for a Japanese restaurant. They played American jazz! This is by far my favorite sushi place I have ever been too. I have been to places more expense and trendy (not that this place is cheap), but this place remains my favorite. The sushi is super fresh here, and the rolls are very well prepared, so there you need to go big or go home. The chefs special rolls are so necessary to try. Every roll on that menu I have tried has been perfectly balanced so that you taste the sushi, and whatever combination of things they choose to wrap it in or with. My favorite roll is the Royal Seninn. This is your top of the line spice tuna roll. They roll it in rice and avocado, then they cover the whole thing with 5 different colors of fish roe. OMG soo freaking good! The avocado wrap perfectly balances the spicy tuna, and each color of fish roe add their own unique taste to the piece. Every other roll I have had here has been good as well. An the service is excellent, and depending on the waiter you get sometimes even friendly. An big bonus here, they have what is my favorite green tea, and green tea ice cream which actually tastes just like it. read more

I would give the service alone 5 stars. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the bartender who asked if I'd like to check my coat in. Honestly the service was impeccable from beginning to end. Now for the food and drinks just wonderful. The drinks were strong and delicious. The employees were all attentive and made sure we were happy with everything. Price is affordable and the decor is lovely. I ordered the chirashi sushi which is assorted sliced fish over a bed of rice which tasted fresh and delicious. It also came with a side of miso soup. But I got bullshitted- Don't ask for a vodka lime juice cocktail with ice.... they only charge the happy hour cocktail price if it's a "normal martini" (how was I supposed to know that?
