I've been meaning to try this place for a while after seeing a bunch of friends post pictures of their plates filled with this so called "all you can eat" sushi rolls deal. I'm a sucker for deals like this so I finally checked it out for lunch on a weekday. The deal is great. You pay $10 and you can order an unlimited amount of small appetizers and sushi rolls. Oh boy, my boyfriend and I were hungry so our eyes were really bigger than our stomachs. We ordered the calamari tempura, chicken teriyaki, spicy tuna roll, fried California roll, shrimp tempura roll, wildcat roll, and I believe 2 more rolls, names of which I can't remember but they were both not fried. AND 4 pieces of sushi (which are an extra $1 a piece). Wow, we ate it all. All of it. We didn't have to but the restaurant has a rule where for every piece you don't eat, you pay like .60$ or so, from what I can remember. Mind you, they have a complimentary soup and salad bar on the side, and yes, we had soup and salad prior to the meal. Now the reason I give this place 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 is because of the quality of the food. The rolls tasted okay for the price you are paying, however, (& this is my pet peeve with sushi restaurants) the rolls were about 60% rice. No wonder we were so full after lunch! Also the fried rolls, unfortunately, all sort of tasted the same. All 3 of the fried rolls we ordered had a line of eel sauce on top. Went to Sushi Shack with some friends who wanted sushi, and we got the dinner AYCE for $17.99 a person with student ID. Great deal, but the quality of the sushi is definitely lacking. It is of course what you paid for. We were a bit disappointed by not being able to order sashimi or nigiri unless being charged $1 per piece. Also for every roll left unfinished you get charged $0.60 per roll. So be aware of that! Now we started off with miso soup and a house salad, which was great. The dressing was nice, and the miso soup wasn't too bad either. Since we were a group of six people, we had a significant amount of orders for sushi so it took a while to come out since they bring it out all at once. The sushi has a lot of rice, so it'll fill you up pretty fast. You're definitely not going to eat as much as you think. We ended up only getting two rounds of an estimated 10 rolls per round. Round two actually took about 20 or so minutes to come out, so I mean all the food settled in pretty well and we didn't get that round three (barely even round two but who wants to pay extra) If you're looking for quality sushi, you should probably find some place that isn't AYCE. Great location, convenient access and decent lunch prices. This place has the potential for being a good sushi place but it is poorly lacking. The first round of sushi wasn't terrible but the second platter was just inedible. First off, the sushi to rice ratio is completely off, there is more rice than anything. Secondly, the rolls are not proportional, meaning so rolls are very thin to very thick. The salmon skin roll was burnt, hardly any fish in the rolls and lastly the rolls that came to the table are not what was described in the menu. Consumers be warned now, you will be charged for having food left on your plate and will not be mentioned until you order your second round. (Oh, found the charge on the order form.) The all you can eat is questionable for the price. Lots of rice and very little fish. I sampled a handful of rolls all with the same experience. I also ventured into paying $1 per piece for the actual sushi. It was certainly better and the only reason I'm giving the place as many stars as I am. However, the fish was definitely dry and didn't have the freshest texture/taste. The service was good and it had a quaint atmosphere outside of that. We drove 54 miles just to go try out The Sushi Shack in Plano, Texas and they did not disappoint. The sushi chef Lee, made a special sushi for us; if you dare eat his special Tobico Carolina Reaper Roe sushi. WOW! So GOOD; we both ate it whole... the only way to eat sushi. When I lived in Plano, this was a mainstay for days when I was just wanting a cheap big meal. A few reviewers have correctly pointed out that there is a definite you get what you pay for factor. Yes the rice portion is oversized. Yes it's basically all rolls. Yes, at lunch especially its more novelty cooked rolls than anything else. That said, the rice is actually of reasonable quality and well vinegared. Some of the cooked rolls are pretty good (The bulgogi roll was a favorite). Let's be honest. This is not high end stuff, which is fine. That said it is worlds better than it's closest comps like Tokyo One or Ninja Sushi . The fact that so many can savage this place is less a comment on it's quality, but more a commentary of how much good quality stuff surrounds it. They will charge for any leftover rolls. I rated them 4 stars because the last time I went we had asked for a fork and our server just pointed to a table and said go get it from there. I was slightly disappointed in my visit today. Let me start by saying the food was good as usual. The disappointing part was due to one of the staff. They have a rule that you have to pay for each piece you leave behind. I understand the rule because you don't want people over ordering and leaving behind a bunch of food. My friend and I ordered a few rolls and had 2 pieces each left. It was basically just the ends to the fried rolls. Well she came up and told us that we would have to pay a dollar each for the pieces we left behind. We told her we would just have to eat them even though we didn't really want to. This is among of the best all you can eat, fresh made PER order, sushi buffet restaurants I have been to. My favorite thing about this restaurant is the fact that they make the orders you put in fresh every time so you don't have rolls sitting out somewhere waiting for someone like a regular buffet. The rolls you get are fairly priced. They are loaded with rice but you do get a fair amount of ingredients for the lunch and dinner buffet. Most do NOT need soy sauce. My husband and I decided to try this place today for lunch. The AYCE sushi is a joke. I wouldn't even call it mediocre. All of the rolls we ordered were heavily padded with rice and I'm guessing this is their tactic to full you up quickly so you don't keep ordering. The rolls were so poorly made, we couldn't pick them up with our chopsticks because they would fall apart. We got frustrated and started picking them up with my hands. If you don't eat all of the rice they pack on to the sushi, they will charge you for it. If you want siracha or hot sauce,they charge $0.50 per serving. We really wanted to just try different kinds, to see what we liked but this "all you can eat" involved an entire order of rolls, unlike other places where we can pick one of each kind. Lots and lots of rice in the rolls, not much else. If you leave any rice or any rolls, you have to pay extra. Don't over order or you'll have to pay or shove it down to avoid paying lol. Note to self (and reader): you get what you pay for. This is a low cost place for a basic sushi meal. They have pre-determined combo plates, lunch specials and some sort of buffet option. So it's fast with limited options (adding to the fast). However, I really love sushi and the sushi experience. I want the chance to order what I want to order. That is an option at SS, but then the cost is comparable to a nicer place, at the same time the options are limited and not the same quality. The Sushi Shack is a great local business and tons of regular customers. I think some friends & family make it a tradition to eat here on a regular basis. But I see the staff having a hard time getting orders right, both with understanding what the customer is saying and in delivering the car correct food in a timely manner. All that being said, it's probably worth trying out. And I'm not opposed to going there again. I just don't love it, and I'm not totally sure if I like it. If the owners read this dont take it personal, you could turn this place around easy, and i would come back a second time but i would need to see a change. For my birthday tonight we ordered 4 types of specialty rolls. So we did rainbow roll, spicy tuna,caterpillar and crunch roll. All were fresh and delicious. We also ordered fried rice and some noodles w chicken as well. My husband picked this food up on his way home from work and brought it home. Despite the reviews I wanted to give them a chance because the menu sounded so good. Only 2 of 8 rolls I wanted to try were even on the lunch all-you-can-eat menu. I was excited about the squid salad but it wasn't even an add on. The strong smell of pure ammonia didn't help our appetites. Most restaurants are not having self serve for the soup and we were surprised that they had that for the miso. We didn't even try the overly riced rolls because there wasn't anything worth a round 2 let alone 3. The extremely watered down green tea that I couldn't drink didn't help either.
