Sushi Star is a convenient spot to quickly pick up some sushi, but it can get a little expensive. Usually what gets me in the door is some sort of discount through LevelUp. There are 2 options for choosing your food at Sushi Star: pre-made or order off the menu. I usually do the former because it's faster. The last time I went, I got a box set for $12.95 (the least expensive non-vegetarian box set) which had 12 roll pieces with a little bit of edamame. When I went to check out, she said it also came with soup or salad. The last time I got a box set (probably a year earlier), that wasn't part of the set. It's a much better value now with the salad included, but you can still get a 2 roll combo lunch special at sushi restaurants elsewhere in Hell's Kitchen with soup *and* salad for less. The quality of the sushi was fine and the salad was good, but it's hard for me to justify spending so much when there are other options nearby that I think deliver similar or better sushi and more value. read more

We've been waiting for 40 minutes since they've taken our order and only a very lukewarm miso soup has come out. The server is so sweet and friendly but that's literally the end of the nice things I can say about this restaurant. Prices are $20+ for a bento box and $15+ for special rolls--nothing outrageous for this side of town but I still feel ripped off. For that price, get something delivered. Speaking of delivery, this place seems to get a fair number of takeout and delivery orders, but we've been sitting here for 45 minutes and not a single food order has gone out for the six parties (four tables and two takeout) that are waiting. Easily my favorite fast casual Japanese/sushi spot. They're quick and convenient if you're looking for a filling lunch/dinner that's a step up from grocery store sushi. I wouldn't say the sushi rolls are amazing quality but they certainly are fresh and tasty. Aside from the sushi, I've gotten a few of their bento boxes for lunch which comes with the main entree, side salad, fried veggies, a California roll and miso coup. It is a convenient lunch place and the poke bowls are decent, but the service is sub par. I ordered a customized poke bowl and was given one with all of their toppings. I had told the woman at the counter that I wanted my bowl with only fish, avocado and seaweed salad - she immediately cut me off to see if I wanted the seaweed salad on the side. When she brought my bowl and it had everything in it, I nicely said that my order was wrong. She tried to debate me and say that I didn't tell her that I only wanted two toppings, when I did. When she brought back my new bowl it was evident that they had simply dumped out the toppings I didn't want (I found the ingredients still in the bottom of my bowl). The cashier is extremely nice, the service is very slow unless you buy a pre packaged sushi box. A woman who was running to serve multiple customers at once, but still taking the time to talk to each one individually, asking them what they liked, how they are doing, and following up for their thoughts on the meal.
