Finally, a sushi place I can say is good without adding the qualifier, "for the Capitol District". I was there for the anniversary special with $1 single pieces this month only, but the regular lunch prices aren't much more considering that you get soup or salad, which weren't offered with the $1 special. Slices of yellowtail, tuna and mackerel were fresh, fat and generous. Tobiko was served in a cylinder of toasted nori that was still warm. Aaah.... Most of the lunch crowd were having bento boxes, noodle dishes or specials other than the sushi, suggesting that getting your regular comfort dish is more important than saving a buck or two. A very good sign, as was the large proportion of Japanese being spoken by the clientele. Not being an Albanian, I have just figured out that this apparently remote section of Western Ave is actually right below the Crossgates Mall. So I can drop off my computer at the Apple store and have a bowl of udon next time while they're working on it. I recently tried sushi tei for the first time and loved it! I went on a Tuesday and got the ramen special (which I believe is only offered on Tuesday's) and it was really good! I have been craving Some good Ramen for the longest time and this definitely hit the spot! I tried the spicy ramen bowl with beef which was slightly more spicy than I can handle but still very good!! The waitress did warn me that it was pretty spicy but I figured I'd try it..Next time I will just get hot sauce on the side so I can add it in myself and not make it too spicy. The portion size was pretty big I ended up splitting it with my bf. We also got some sushi rolls which were verryyy delicious. I recommend trying the Louisiana roll it was soo good! I can't give five stars because my husband as I are on a quest to find the best sushi place in the Capital Region. So, if you know me you know my story. Hubby and I love sushi. We've eaten at plenty of Sushi places. We tried Sushi Tei for the first time tonight. We loved it. It's a bit hard to to find, it's on the side of (as they say on their website) Cosimo's Plaza. It's a really cute little place. It's cozy but you're not bumping into each other. On one wall the decor seems a bit busy and the other wall is almost bare. Loved the lights hanging from the ceiling with script on them. The music was your traditional Japanese stringed instrument music. The food was wonderful. My husband ordered the miso soup and I ordered the mini udon soup. There's nothing mini about the mini udon soup. I expected to get a little bowl of soup like they usually give you miso soup in. Well, this was about four times bigger than what I was expecting. It was beautiful bowl too! The miso was good, but not as good as some others. The udon soup is officially now my favorite soup! It was fantastic! Then came the appetizer. My husband order the rock shrimp and I don't usually like spice but they were so tasty and the spice was just perfect. The when the sushi arrived it look perfect. It tasted even better. We had ordered the 007 roll and the Twilight roll. So guess you could say our sushi had a movie theme, even if I hate the whole Twilight thing. As my husband says "I'd like a license to kill the undead". The sushi was all delicious, fresh and flavorful. It was all melt in your mouth good. The service was good. We had two waitresses, one was much more out going than the other but they both got the job done and were pleasant to deal with. When we left we were so satisfied. I couldn't stop smiling. Im going to ruin it for you, its pronounced Sushi tay (taé). I don't give 5's too often but this place deserves it. In short, best sushi for the price i. have ever had in the US. This is a small cozy place, if i had to guess id say less then 20 tables. Decent parking lot. The place is well lit with subtle decorations, not over the top. The staff is always quick and friendly. The food an the prices greatly come into play for my review and rating. I have eaten sushi in a number of places in the US. I will be clear, the quality of the sushi is among the best ever and the cost is so low its unbelievable. Other places are worse for much more $$$. The rice is perfectly fresh and the sushi is very distinct in flavoring. Their is nothing worse then flavorless sushi and hard or stale rice. I have never been let down by them. My faves are the Kani salad for appetizer and for dinner they make a killer rainbow roll. If the small environment is not your thing, get take out. Had a fabulous lunch here recently with Mrs The Crank, wherein we had very nicely prepared appetizer edamame, delicious Udon (fantastic broth, really lovely noodles), a reasonable sushi sampler (deftly prepared, even if it does suffer like all sushi around here from a lack of decent fresh fish), and some very indifferent salad. All in all, good enough to daub it with four stars without benefit of the usual repeat visit, wherein we will delve more deeply into the menu. Speaking of the menu, it's extensive - almost too big - and the preparation seems quite on the mark. As a hole in the wall and relatively reasonably priced, this little side-strip-mall joint is a great find, and beats the other Japanese places we've tried in the area (I think we're on our fifth or sixth) hands down. New agey piano music was a bit incongruous with the combination of drop ceiling and reasonable small-scale Japanese-traditional-restaurant decor, but the flawless service helped the ambiance meter back up. read more

Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior. This place was bright and vibrant on the inside even on a weeknight! The shades are usually rolled down even when they're open, so don't drive off without tugging at the door first, or you'll regret it! Probe further and you'll find excellent Japanese fare. We've had the sushi, sashimi and the Donburi- all delicious. We've been here a few times and it's been consistently good. I've had the chicken Donburi and the Chicken Katsu-Don. Both variations on a deliciously flavorful theme. The Donburi is served as a bowl of rice with "special sauce " which is bursting with savory,onion-y flavors. The chicken is served on a bed of sautéed Onions nestled atop a mound of rice. If your mouth wasn't watering already... add an egg to this and you've got all your basic food groups in one hearty meal. Best part: you get to eat it twice! (As long as you're not a leftover snob). The katsu don is basically the same just with breaded chicken instead. My husband's had the beef Donburi and he orders it every time. I like to start with their clear soup, very flavorful- the mushroom and onion flavors meld together quite well. The place is small, but clean and the service is always great. Tucked away on the side of a western ave shopping plaza, zoom down western and you'll surely miss it. But it's definitely worth slowing down! Tips: $1 sushi/sashimi pieces in July! Don't pass this up, these usually run anywhere from $1.50-3 (my husband's glaring at me as I write this). They serve Ramen only on Tuesdays and Sunday's! read more

We come here quite often and I finally thought I would write a review. Their sushi is good, but you can get better slightly I think. They really shine in the kitchen. Their soups, douburi, katsu, and curries are probably the best in the area. The service is inconsistent. Never bad, but sometimes you are treated like royalty and sometimes it is barely passable. You never know, but it has never been bad for me. I think their iku mariaki and udon is the best in the area. I highly recommend. My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch a few weeks ago while meeting up in the area. I looked up sushi places in the area and chose sushi tei because of the reviews. I wish I had been warned. We both arrived and everything was yummy delicious and fresh seemingly. However by the next day we both were very sick. He got better by the next day and I continued to have severe stomach pain among other food poisoning symptoms for an additional three days. I eventually ended up in the hospital from a bacterial infection in my stomach due to you guessed it bad sushi! I will never go here again and was severely upset about the outcome. How did I not know about Sushi Tei? Why did I sleep on this place? New to the Guilderland neighborhood, the husband and I wanted to try a local-to-us sushi bar. While Hanna is perfectly fine, the service always seems rushed. Sometimes we just want to move at a slower pace. Sushi Tei let us linger over our dishes, and gave us plenty of time between courses. Everyone was friendly and the owner came over a few times to check on us. She did this with each table. We started with miso soup. This stuff was the stuff that cures you of your ailments - warm, earthy and a little salty. It was great. I then moved onto the age-dashi-dofu. This is one of my favorite things to eat but it's often not on the menus or well prepared. Here, this was the best I've had. Inside was silken tofu, outside the skin was lightly fried. The sauce was rich and salty. I could have ordered more, but my husband was anxious for his sushi. Trust me, I'll be back! Our sushi was fantastic! The avocado was really ripe. The fish was fresh. My husband said the wasabi was really spicy and fresh. But what I loved the most was that no slice of roll or piece of sushi was so big I had to bite in two. My Boston roll was one delicious bite. This was the first time I dined in. I've previously ordered take out and enjoyed it. The restaurant has revamped and the ambiance, decor, and service are great. Our waitress was very attentive, answered our many questions, and provided some excellent guidance. The food was great. Enjoyed the fresh Shrimp Shumai and well-balanced Miso Soup for an appetizer. We then enjoyed a bowl of Chicken Katsu-Don, 007 Roll, Salmon Lover Roll, Hawaii Roll, and New England Roll. The meal was rounded off with a Green Tea ice cream tempura. Each of the rolls was well made and delicious. The 007 was a personal favorite as I enjoyed the contrasting textures of the soft inside and crispy outside. Two minor critiques - the fried oyster in the New England roll had a slight bitter taste, which probably came from oil that had been one or two too many times. The Green Tea flavor in the ice cream was a bit strong for our personal tastes, but that's entirely subjective. This is a cozy and comfortable Japanese restaurant I've been frequenting for a while now. They have many appetizers including takoyaki, tempura, ika maruyaki, gyoza, shumai, edamame and more.. to entrees like ton katsu, udon, teriyaki, curry, don buri, sushi + sashimi ... it isn't your typical Japanese place in the CapReg and it doesnt have hibachi tables or seating for larger parties. Having tried a plethora of the menu items, I can say the dining experience from the service to the quality and quantity of the food is excellent. I'm so glad I found this place, but at the same time, I'm a bit sad because I found this place so late during my business trip. You wouldn't think much of Sushi Tei just by looking at the outside, but it's quite nice on the inside. The restaurant was fairly busy and there was only one waitress. Later another waitress arrived on the scene and things started to pick up. Both of them were very nice. The sushi was delightful. I had gone to Ichiban a few days before hoping to get some sushi, but I decided against it since the place looked suspect. I wasn't sure if I would get quality sushi there. I didn't have any of these worries at Sushi Tei. The Tiger Roll, Lady in Red, and Spicy Girl were all pretty good. I usually don't review restaurants in other states but this was a refreshing experience from our usual sushi places to eat. We got to eat a tuna dumpling which was so tasty- no soy sauce needed. The whole squid was cooked just right and had a light teriyaki sauce with tobiko added to taste. The ginger was amazing and just how I remember it should be. We even had two different wasabis to use; one was hotter than the other and tasted great with my sashimi. I would recommend this place to anyone in Albany wanting to eat some good Japanese food. I don't know if this is usual in New York, but the one part that was surprising was paying for a refill on a soda. We will still come back if we are here in the east coast again. read more

Let me start off by saying that I've never had good sushi in the Albany area, despite the Yelp ratings. I was hoping that this one would be different, but I was sadly disappointed. I started off with the seaweed salad and edamame. The edamame wasn't salted, but that wasn't entirely necessary. Otherwise, it was pretty good. The seaweed salad was too vinegar-y and sour. It was hard to eat. Also good to note that the portion sizes here are much bigger than normal sushi places, so keep that in mind! I then ordered a salmon avocado roll and some other roll (I don't remember which) along with two pieces of sashimi, which never came out? My friend also received the wrong special roll. The sushi we received did not taste fresh. It wasn't very tasty either. However, our waitress was very nice. Our busser was nice too. We ordered some hot saké and I highly recommend getting that if you come here. It was really good. Maybe we had just had a bad experience or they were having a bad night. The ambience was cool. We all really liked this place. The ambiance was authentic Japanese, with the small exception that the tatami room had a recessed space for the legs. But the decorations and style were on target. The food was outstanding. We had chirashi, which was great. Awesome selection, generous cut, very fresh. The miso soup was particularly good. The agedashi tofu was also excellent. The hibachi steak was super tender and perfectly prepared. The seaweed salad had a perfect blend of oil and spices with the normal seaweed itself. Very good and healthy too. The manager at the community we live at recommended this place bc we're new to the area and love sushi. She was spot on. The spot is nice and cozy and feels away from everything although it's in a plaza not far from a shopping mall. The veggie gyozas were very tasty. The rolls pictured are The Take, Hawaii, Yummy and Mistletoe all of which were amazing to taste and well put together. I came here last night for Sunday ramen and sushi a my friend. I had the Yaki mussels, aged tofu, sushi, and tonkatsu ramen. Everything was delicious. I ended up getting strawberry Mochi ice cream as well, I do not recommend that mochi ice cream though bc the mochi skin texture tasted kinda rough as if it's been in the fridge for while. Although the presentation looked nice. At the end of our meal, the bill came out to be cheaper than I thought after eating 3 appetizers(6 pieces of sushi, aged tofu, mussels) 2 entree(tonkatsu ramen), 1 dessert (mochi ice cream). Apparently sushi tei was celebrating their anniversary this month so each piece of sushi costs $1 per piece whereas normally it's around $1.5-1.75. Still very cheap sushi. My family's go to sushi spot. We mostly do delivery which is always on time and correct. They used to be on Grubhub but it looks like now you have to order from their website directly. If you dine in the menu is much larger and includes a lot of ramen that isn't on their delivery menu. The food is good and flavorful and the sushi is always really fresh.
