This place is so underrated!! I get the salmon poke bowl and it's the best one I've had in Pittsburgh by far. Usually comes with an iceberg lettuce and rice base, edamame, seaweed salad, carrots, cabbage, avacado and roe. The salmon is mixed in a sweet soy sauce and cucumber pieces. I used to really enjoy this place. Food was always good. However, my most recent experience was by far and away the worst I've had. The rolls (Sunshine) were lackluster, the sushi was fine (can't go wrong with raw fish and rice), the salad and dressing weren't what I ordered, and the miso soup was ok. But the added bonus was that I was told they would no longer deliver to me. Even though I've been ordering from them for 2 years. I moved two blocks away. But that was a bridge too far. It's been a while since last time I came here, but the service is getting worse and food quality is not stable. We ordered a shrimp Tempura combo, Crazy Dragon sushi rolls, Pork Shogayaki, and Seafood yaki Udon noodle. Both dragon sushi rolls and shrimp tempura are tasty, but it takes a long time to get us a bowl of rice that should have come together with shrimp tempura. For the Pork Shogayaki, the worst ever! pork Shogayaki is a very common Japanese dish, and suppose to be made with thin-cut sliced pork, but Sushi Too has sliced but very thick pork Shogayaki; it's dry and tasted like chewy gums! It's nothing like Japanese style at all. And the seafood yaki udon noodle, took forever to make, and when the waiter delivered the food, we found that it's been cool down...maybe they forgot we ordered that? Overall, not recommended, but if you only like sushi rolls, Sushi Too still is a good place. read more

Sushi Too is an excellent sushi place, but it is also affordable. The service is quick because for some reason no one is ever eating in there! Why?? I can't understand it! The food is great; the prices are good; the service is fast; plus, it is on Walnut street. I cannot believe this place isn't packed at all hours. On one particular visit I ordered the shrimp sushi and one of the variations of their Oh My God roll. Everything was fresh (very important when it comes to sushi, duh) and the textures working together in the Oh My God roll were complementary -- crispy shrimp tempura, perfectly cooked rice, creamy top. Very very good overall. Their lunch specials are also legit, so I recommend visiting for lunch. You get a lot of food for a very small amount of money. read more

This was my first time trying sushi in Pittsburgh. I heard good things about this place and since I was in the neighborhood I decided to give it a try. I went during lunch time on a Monday. There were plenty of open seats so waiting wasn't a problem. The service was very fast and respectful, but unfortunately the food wasn't as good as I would have liked it to be. I ordered the ikura (salmon egg) sushi and onsen tamago gyudon ( soft boiled egg over beef rice bowl). The ikura sushi was good, but the gyudon was disappointing. On a personal note, I think they undercooked the egg, but my main problem was the fact that the menu item was called a gyudon but the beef and rice were separate. Because this wasn't in a bowl, the egg couldn't be absorbed by the rice and a lot of the sauce went to waste. The beef also tasted more like teriyaki beef instead of a lighter sukiyaki-like beef as it should be. I would go back but wouldn't order the gyudon again. read more

Insects in my food and other's food! Would not recommend this place until there is a thorough deep cleaning. We came to dinner here by accident because we had intended on going to a different restaurant in the area. The wait staff were very nice and welcoming which is the best part of this awful experience. I ordered the ramen with vegetables. After eating half of my soup, I noticed a family looking at one of their bowls oddly and then getting the attention of the waitress. They pointed out something in the bowl and the waitress went over to the manager. The waitress started apologizing. The family then got up and left looking disgusted. I immediately started looking in my soup bowl and then I discovered a black insect with wings in my bowl. I felt so nauseous because I had been eating this for a while. As soon as I always come here the staffs are very smiley and nice even I'm not going so often as I used to (once or twice a week, some of them knew what it was my order before I say because I used to order the same things) because now I'm living far away from Walnut. The salmon is still always fresh as used to be. For lunch: I do recommend a set from the lunch menu which makes your meal big and cheap. In the night: NORMALLY they serve EDAMAME as a courtesy and I never saw any restaurant in Pittsburgh that does that. For dessert: I like their fried ice cream (also called Tempura Ice Cream). It's a little puffy because there is "cake/cupcake" dough in the middle. To sum up: It's a good cost-benefit. read more

The portions were pretty large. I ordered a seaweed salad and a huge bowl of it came. I rolled out of the restaurant after having 2 special rolls and a bottle from their selection of beers. Had pgh roll, a spicy tuna roll, eel roll (maki combo) and the chicken katsu. Katsu was kind of mediocre and the breading didn't stick well to the chicken but it wasn't bad. The spicy tuna roll was kind of bland but the other two were actually pretty good. It is not amazing but definitely at least average quality for a sushi restaurant. I'd say go for the eel roll of the three it was the best of the three. read more

Sushi too is one of my regular favorites, I have been coming here since I was a child. I usually go to the area for a light lunch and shopping, and luckily sushi too is great for a light lunch. They have a decent lunch menu, which offers a variety of bento box options. My favorite is the teriyaki chicken with the tempura. I also love their sushi. We tried this place on a whim a few days ago, and we liked it so much we came back within a week! The place is small, only a few tables, so service was quick and we got our table and drinks right away. We ordered a bento box and a sushi lunch special the first time, and sushi for two the second. Our entrees came with salad and soup, both of which were delicious- but the salad tasted better than it looked, and they probably could have gone a little lighter on the dressing. The tempura was crisp without being overly greasy, and the sushi was tasty and plated well. Prices were reasonable, and they have great drink specials too. I don't know why there aren't constantly lines out the door here- I'm hoping we just went when it was slow. I'm excited to try some of their other menu items, like sukiyaki. Ordered the Curry Katsu Don for takeout and it was just alright. The curry was was filled with veggies (onions, potatoes, carrots) which made it nice and filling, but it was thinner and more watery than I'd like. It was also on top of a bed of uncooked shredded cabbage which I found odd. There was no way to separate the curry and cabbage, so I had raw, crunchy cabbage in each bite which I wasn't all too excited about. The katsu had gotten a bit soggy when I opened up my bento at home, so I popped them in the air fryer for a few minutes. Sadly they were extremely bland. I don't normally post reviews but tonight I had a great dining experience at Sushi Too. We got right in on a Friday night no reservation required. Our waitress came right over and brought us waters. She was quick to take our food order as well. I started with a large ginger salad which had a dairy-based dressing (I prefer an orange ginger dressing) but it was still good. Vegetable fresh rolls and vegetable stuffed tofu pockets contained fresh crispy vegetables. The dipping sauce for the fresh rolls was delicious. Our waitress also brought over low sodium soy sauce and hot sauce upon request. My friend had the rainbow roll and seaweed salad and she enjoyed both. I have always liked Sushi Too. I have been going there for YEARS! The fish is fresh. The chef's (King and Tony) are very nice, helpful and fantastic at their craft. I love their sushi. I honestly haven't tried much of their cooked foods; can't get passed the sushi. We've tried almost everything on their menu. They have sushi donuts (a round donut-looking roll with several fish varieties on top), sushi cupcakes (a cupcake looking cup of rice with fish and spicy mayo), rolls (creative and regular), sushi and sashimi. We recently got take out from them. It came when they said. It was fresh and, even in the take out boxes, was well presented. We did make a special request that we didn't get; but, it was minor and we certainly enjoyed the meal without it. read more

Sushi Too was not on the Walnut Street restaurant rotation list. It was the first time I tasted Tempura. I have not taken, take out, only ate in once. I am sorry I never got to try the Sushi Cupcake that everyone is talking about. I had the Tempura lunch and a California Roll. The service was quick and friendly. I am sad to say that the green tea, I love so much, was warm at best and not Hot :( The lunch was good and tasty, but I didn't return. I would recommend it for those that have never tried it. Man. I guess I should've taken this place's 3 stars more seriously. When I pay for a specialty type roll, well in my entire life any sushi rolls, even the simple maki, have ALWAYS had either 6 or 8 pieces per roll. The one I ordered tonight was just FOUR little pieces! Like they took a roll and cut it in half and just serve the half roll.. sooo strange, I've never seen this before. Also my roll was supposed to have smoked salmon in it. Which was the whole reason why I ordered that roll. Instead of smoked salmon it contained like some kind of baked salmon... The roll my husband ordered was fine, and the rest of my roll after I picked out the salmon was okay I guess.. not very visually appealing, usually the eel is covered in sauce, this one isn't really at all and doesn't seem very high quality. Also the shrimp tempura in the other roll was greasier than any other shrimp tempura roll I've ever had. I guess I'm lucky that when I ordered I added a note saying "please nothing spicy and no mayo" just in case, cause thankfully mine didn't get mayo but my husband's roll automatically came with that mayo sauce even though there was no mention of it on the menu. I hate when they don't mention things like that on the menu. Sushi isn't cheap you know, for what I paid I'm soo disappointed by what I got. Oh and one thing of chopsticks. Never seen a place be so stingy, usually any place will give you like three things of chopsticks minimum.... not Sushi Too, nope. Neverrr going back, could neverrr recommend to anyone. I took a business lunch at Sushi Too. How adult does that sound? "Business lunch." Man, I'm a cool graduate student. Disclaimer: I have NO IDEA what this place's hours are. Yelp shows that they close in between meals, but we lunched straight through from lunch to dinner. I'm sorry if they do close, but Yelp needs to see if the hours listed are correct. Service was great and continued to check on us throughout our four hour meeting. Some of the reviews were lackluster so I played it safe and stuck to Chicken Lo Mein ($15). It was not memorable, and fairly small for the price. But there was nothing wrong with the meal, making it an A-Ok. Would I be opposed to coming back?
