Our family loves sushi & we're picky about sushi. Our first experience was amazing. It was very busy as it was the 4th of July, however they seated us quickly, the host poured us water immedietly & asked us if we wanted anything else to drink while we reviewed the menu, which we obliged. When the host brought us our drinks he asked if we wanted an appetizer. It was refreshing that he didn't ask in a way that felt menacing like it can come across by some hosts/servers at other restaraunts. We ordered the calamari because this is our favorite go-to appetizer. The aioli sauce was TO DIE FOR! The appetizer arrived at the perfect time, as did the miso-soup that we ordered. The miso soup was good, not great but definitely good enough to get if in the mood! The waitress greeted us in a timely manner & was so kind to walk us through a menu we were new to. She made some recommendations, spent time with us chatting about Sebastopol at the 4th of July as we're new to the area, was very patient with our excited 7 yr. old (we had already seen 1 fireworks show-on our way to the 2nd) & kept up on our refills of water, soda & ice tea. We ordered a Bento Dinner which includes soup, salad (light ginger dressing), rice, sushi & we choose teriyaki chicken. We choose the Alaska Roll. It was amazing! We also ordered two Dynamite Rolls & they sure live up to their name!!!! The best sushi roll I've ever had...the sauce is unbelievable. The entire experience was great. Since then, we've gone back and we ordered the Prawns Martini as an appetizer. Let me say this...you CANNOT go to this restaraunt without getting this appetizer! It is the most delicious, delectible, rich, creamy yet with a spicy kick prawns dish served in a martini glass. The BEST EVER! We ordered another Bento dinner but this time it was Tempura vegetables with sushi. We died and went to heaven!!!! They fried every kind of vegetable & some seafood as well. The food was so good we were making inappropriate noises at the table, people in the restaraunt were checking to make sure we both had our hands ON the table & not UNDER the table. : ) We ordered two Dynamite Rolls & of course we had our soup & salad earlier. Our waiter was very nice & funny. It was a quiet early evening so that was nice. Well, it was so much food that we could hardly walk home. We were drunk on food and we had TONS of leftovers. I had my birthday dinner here with family. We went early (5PM) and had the whole upstairs to ourselves, which was great because my 6 y/o granddaughter was there and didn't quite sit still so much! I love this place so much! I came back after years of being away and I was not disappointed! I was nervous that after so long, that things would have changed but I was pleasantly surprised that things were just as I remembered! We enjoyed this authentic Japanese dining experience after an evening at a Japanese spa. We were seated right away and greeted with enthusiasm by the sushi bar chefs. We sat at the sushi bar where we received attentive service from several wait staff and the female sushi chef. The miso soup was excellent as well as the hot sake, vegetarian sushi rolls and salmon dinner. Brown rice option and substitutes not an issue, as well as re-heating our hot sake- no problemo. It was my first time here tonight! This is my first dinner for 2015. I'm a huge sushi fanatic. I pretty much eat sushi every day. I love it clean, simple, and fresh. Sushi Tozai is new favorite of mine in Sebastopol. We almost didn't make it! I called in around their opening time but my call kept getting dropped. We ended up driving over on a whim. My family and I used to go to Tozai extremely regularly, first name basis with the staff and sushi chefs, etc. Recently the head chef Patrick left to go home to Java, and the new chef is nowhere near up to the standards we were accustomed to. The cuts of fish were excruciatingly poor, chewy and sloppily done, and the cooked items we ordered were cold. This is a huge disappointment, as it seems our favorite dinner location is going downhill. read more

I got their lunch with salmon teriyaki, rice, soup, and salad with a side of shrimp tempura. They gave two pieces of salmon instead of one like other restaurant I've tried would do which I thought was pretty awesome. I really like their salmon teriyaki and their tempura was also really good. I thought it was kinda weird how they serve their soup without giving you a spoon, but maybe that's just what I'm used to. Service was very nice and sweet. Amazing sushi! Some of their entree's are very similar to Gary Chu's (i.e. the prawn martini), but they are noticeably cheaper so I'm not complaining! (: Of course their raw sushi is delicious, but they also have cooked food which is great too; and you can never go wrong with miso soup. Their is hardly any wait time for the food; they are very efficient with getting orders to the table in a timely fashion. Especially when i order out; the food is usually ready in under 20 minutes. I do miss the sushi bar aspect; even most upscale sushi restaurants have a bar where the guests can watch the head chef work his magic. This is definitely more of a formal date restaurant, as opposed to a getting together with friends. In terms of the decorations and style of the establishment; the floor plan is small yet open; there is also an upstairs which adds a nice variable. Due to the small size of the room and the openness of the floor plan, I would not suggest bringing fussy kids here- their is not much room for them to walk around and any loud noise they make would not be received well considering how everything echoes. Everything is very clean and simple. Service is always great, the hostess is especially welcoming and very sweet-always has a smile. The waiters are talkative without being overbearing, and always helpful when deciding what to order. In terms of price range, as I stated earlier, this is the kind of place which is perfect for a date; so it is slightly expensive for most people, however; it is nothing outrageous and it is cheaper than most good sushi places. Wake up Tozai - Hire people who can communicate effectively. The food here is great - no question there. The problem was the service I received. I have not had a problem before but... January 26, 2014 5 pm - As usual sitting at the Sushi bar I was in a hurry so I immediately told the lady who seated us that we wanted an order of Chicken Terriaki. Never came. So I finally checked with the Sushi Chefs and they placed the order. When it did come there was no rice. Shouldn't there be rice? No one ever came to take our drink order or check on us in any way, nothing notta. Like we were not even there. Maybe I am supposed to order everything through the Sushi Chefs but it was not that way before. I had people come check on my group at the Sushi Bar previously. Sushi Tozai is a great place to go for a fancy dinner or a quick lunch. The prices here aren't too bad for the fresh sushi. We have seen this restaurant before and finally tried it. The value is incredible here! The beef sukiyaki had ample beef, tofu, veggies and noodles, and also came with soup, rice and salad for just $11.95. We also ordered chicken udon, a salmon roll, chicken katsu, and a chicken katsu bento lunch. The katsu was tasty, crispy and not oily. I wish they had the sauce on the side instead of drizzling it on the katsu, but next time I'll know to ask for that. Their miso soup was on point, as was their handmade sushi roll. Their udon broth was flavorful but could have had more noodles and less vegetables. The side of rice was not exactly cooked to my liking (not enough "bite" in it--maybe it's the type of rice or they cooked it that day with to much water), but the overall value for the taste and the amount of food we received was enough for me to give it 5 stars. This might be one of the best sushi places in Sonoma County. They have a very exotic selection of rolls that are all extremely tasty. Not your traditional sushi place. I haven't had a chance to try too many of the traditional sushi items because there are so many different exotic things to try. I'd recommend the carburetor roll. The wait staff are very friendly as well as the owner. There is plenty of space, but the place can get packed on the weekends. I attend TribalFest each year in this lovely town, and I make it a priority to have dinner here at least once during my stay. I also seduce anyone with me, travelling there, to join me. I love the panelling there--it's beautifully-grained wood. Anything I've ever had there was Just Right and very tasty. Whether I'm alone, with one or two, or part of a party of 6-8, service has always been great. This last time, there were seven of us, and a large party downstairs slowed the delivery of our entrées, but everyone had ordered miso already, due to hunger after a performance, and we were given a good sized bowl of edamame for the table, which helped. I've had assortments of sushi, a sashimi dinner, an assortment of appetisers, and some of their standard meals. I didn't get to try the Honey Walnut Chicken: that's what I must have next visit. I had the Teppan Seafood Saturday, and the Hamachi Sashimi Dinner on Sunday, when there were several parties of Tribal dancers of various styles and nationalities. It's odd, but the Teppan Seafood, served on a very hot cast iron plate stayed a bit too hot for me even after 30 minutes, forcing me (forced I tell you!) to set the remainder aside for another meal. Had it tonight at home--still wonderful. Depending on whether it'll be dark or light after your meal there, drive up and down nearby streets to see urban junk art sculptures by Patrick Amiot & Brigitte Laurent; the highest concentration is in front yards near his home on Florence Ave. between Healdsburg and Wilton Aves. Whimsy after, or before, a good meal adds to the overall experience. If you still have room, stop into Screamin' Mimi's for ice creams and sorbets using local produce in season. read more

After an evening of harvesting apples, we needed some fuel to restore our sensibilities...we've never eaten here but friends that we were with recommended it....very clean and had good feng shui (not that i know what bad is!! lol....) service was friendly and efficient, Alina was our server and she was great...also helping was Elena, who was very good...after getting a cold sapporo beer, we chose to share a grilled mackerel dinner and a natto makisushi...the salad was nicely chilled with a lovely miso dressing, the miso soup was well balanced and had the requisite tofu and seaweed....the salted mackerel was grilled nicely and had great flavor...watch for bones!!...friends had vegetable tempura which they love...the only ding i gotta mention is that the natto makisushi was not prepped w a little shoyu, mustard and green onions...it was just squeezed out onto the sushi rice as a bland, tan form....i love natto but i like it doctored up a bit...also i love the local organic natto that is made in sebastopol!!...we will be back to try other menu items!! gochiso sama!! read more

Despite the name, there is plenty of non-sushi on the menu here. There are good vegetarian options with vegetable tempura, potstickers, etc. Nice Japanese atmosphere with a roomy upstairs. I have always enjoyed everything I've had here, I like the noodles and the soup especially. Service has always been good, even during times when it is very busy. The chefs do a good job with authentic flavors and good presentation. They also do of course have a wide selection of sushi - the california roll and the unagi are the ones I like the most. I have now been here twice; the second was last night when I brought my wife for a night out. We had 4 different rolls, all were tasty and fresh. The tuna in the Pink lady for example was very fresh and very good. I think the Carburetor is one of my favorites; however the Tokyo Tower was also fun and good. As for service; it was professional and knowledgeable. We asked about the different sake's and our wait person provided some good recommendations and even came back with a sample for me to try when we were ordering our second box. The food took a little while to arrive, but the place was also very busy at 7ish on a Thursday. During my first visit, I came at 5ish on a Tuesday and my friend and I didn't need to wait at all for our food; however the place was quite busy when we left. It is a family place; kids are welcome - Parent's reading this, please just keep your children on a leash. (we had some child walking around poking people and the mom sat idly by...) The maki sushi was tasty and the fish was fresh; so far it's the best sushi spot near Santa Rosa. I have not been to Hana in RP but I have been to a few other places in around SR and would definitely recommend Tozai! read more

I really wish I could give Sushi Tozai a better review. I've had two meals there; the first was okay, but the second was even more bland. The good: a lovely space, and large portions by any standard. The fish topping the nigiri is cut thick and wide. The tempura shrimp were huge, sweet and crisp. The disappointing: the rice is goopy, especially in the rolls. The fish on the nigiri was flabby, and had that not-so-fresh feeling. The hotate was inedible. In fact, much of the meal was inedible--we left half of the sushi behind. Have you ever done that? I am certain I have never walked away from a piece of sushi, ever. But this sushi really was undelicious. O, how it makes me miss San Francisco, Maruya Sushi, the little mom and pop place on Fillmore. read more

I eat a lot of sushi. I've only been here 1 time and that was Sat. 11/14/2015. The nigiri and rolls could not have been better. We sat at the bar and really enjoyed ourselves. I had dinner here with my daughter and we only liked one out of the four things we ate there. I heard that they used to be owned by two different people and one had bought out the other.... that is exactly what the food tasted like. The "Japanese" food was not cooked properly. They steamed the shitake mushrooms and did not cook them thoroughly so they were mushy at the ends and chewy in the middle. I asked them to saute them and they brought me steamed ones again that were over cooked and had nothing but water on them still. The soup I ordered tasted like old dish water. I saw other people order Chinese food and they practically inhaled it so I think that is what they know how to cook well.... just don't go here looking for good Japanese food... and it was way too expensive. Ordered chicken teriyaki and salmon teriyaki as replacements. These main dishes and side salads were very tasty but the miso soup was lukewarm and lacked flavor.
