My husband and I wont go anywhere else in Sebastopol for sushi, Tozai is the best out there! Although my husband sticks to California Rolls and Martini Prawns, I always venture into all areas of the menu and have yet to be disappointed. I've even taken my mom (who doesn't like fish) and they custom made her whatever she wanted to try and we found sushi she loves! Try the Carburetor or Pink Lady Rolls, amazing! And always go for the Martini Prawns and Beef Wrapped Asparagus for an appetizer. An added bonus if you don't like fish, they have something called the Tori roll, its fried chicken with rice and seaweed and a slightly sweet sauce on top. read more

This is our favorite sushi restaurant in West County. The food is always good and we most often find the staff to be attentive and fun. An area that they could improve upon is to offer Gluten Free options. Last week our friend had a hard time ordering because she is GF free. There are no GF choices. She ended up getting a grilled fish dinner which was good, but not sushi. 3 stars until they add GF. read more

I had dinner here with my daughter and we only liked one out of the four things we ate there. I heard that they used to be owned by two different people and one had bought out the other.... that is exactly what the food tasted like. The "Japanese" food was not cooked properly. They steamed the shitake mushrooms and did not cook them thoroughly so they were mushy at the ends and chewy in the middle. I asked them to saute them and they brought me steamed ones again that were over cooked and had nothing but water on them still. The soup I ordered tasted like old dish water. I saw other people order Chinese food and they practically inhaled it so I think that is what they know how to cook well.... just don't go here looking for good Japanese food... and it was way too expensive. This reviews we read were good but the service and food left a lot to be desired. We ordered drinks and our entire order within 10 minutes after being seated. It took 25 minutes for the drinks (water included) 40 for the endame to be delivered, 75 minutes for the soup, 1 hour and 20 minute for our order to come out-incorrectly. We ordered an appetizer, 3 rolls and a dinner meal. We received one soup (not the 2 ordered) the meal, one roll, and drinks were never refreshed. We had to ask for water. Our server never apologized for the delay and charged us for our entire order. We didn't get a chance to disputed because he disappeared again. After waiting too long we just paid the bin and left. Tried to order beef teriyaki on two separate occasions and was told it was not available each time. This was ordering at 5:30, 30 min after opening. Ordered chicken teriyaki and salmon teriyaki as replacements. These main dishes and side salads were very tasty but the miso soup was lukewarm and lacked flavor. My friend and I were wanting some sushi but he wasn't feeling well so we ate pretty light. I'll definitely give this place a try again, hence why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3, but food and service wasn't amazing... FOOD: Miso soup...pretty basic and a bit salty for my tasty and didn't have too much tofu and seaweed. Hamachi Nigiri...silky, simple and smooth as it should be :) Spicy Hamachi Roll...server recommended it and I wasn't sure since I typically love the flavors of more complex rolls but this is what helped led to 4 stars. Simple Hamachi wrapped in rice and nori with a complementing spicy sauce. Delicious. Get it. Sebastopol Roll...not delicious. Looks good with all the different flavors but could have used more eel sauce and not all the pieces had avocado. Pick something else! I'm from LA and I love sushi. If you're in the Santa Monica Area, go to Kaya sushi in Marina Del Rey at Lincoln and Washington street...Best I've had...ever. I know, I know, they're owned by Koreans but amazing selection of maki rolls, nigiri, and sashimi! Check out my review. Tozai? I'm still searching for the best sushi in Sonoma County, and Tozai is high on my list. We went here last night for dinner/date night, and overall I was happy at the end of my meal. The sake (fresh salmon), hamachi, and tuna nigiri were delicious. Fresh, smooth, buttery -- so good. Our rolls were huge, the tempura prawn being the freshest tasting I've had in awhile (I hate when you go to sushi and end up tasting KFC fried-ness). we ended up ordering more nigiri because it was so good, and I could have kept eating and eating and eating... ...but the restaurant was freezing upstairs! We were sat up there with a large, loud birthday party, so waiting for food and drinks seemed to take forever, and we were so cold! I ordered a Tokyo Ginger Cosmo cocktail (I think that is what it was called), and it was really great, but came before my boyfriends green tea. It was hard to warm up but the great food made up for that. read more

This was the place that I fell in love with sushi. Husband and I got engaged in their parking lot--- if you see it, you will think, "What? Engaged here?" There's a story, but I'm not going to tell it. This place is very sentimental to me, but I also love their sushi. There are a couple of better places in Sonoma County- I would say Hana in Rohnert Park and Hiro's in Petaluma, but this place is up there in the top 5. Their tuna has been fresh every time I've had it (which is more than I can say for a lot of sushi places around here), and their elaborate Sebastopol rolls and rolls with sauces, etc. are amazing. It's not cheap, but like I have said before, I'm a sushi snob and I pay what I need to in order to get good sushi. Rolls I have had and recommend: Dragon roll- a favorite Carburetor Caterpillar Rainbow- it was good, but rainbow rolls tend to have too many flavors for me to enjoy them as much as simpler rolls Rock & Roll- a favorite Sebastopol- delicious Shrimp Tempura- a sushi staple Spider Roll- delicious Their Miso soup and Gyoza are also very good. Try this place out if you haven't and if you like good sushi. I'm so sick of sub par Japanese restaurants. I'm not even going to go into it. Japanese restaurant serving lemon chicken, martini prawns (copy of Gary Chu's famous app dish) and honey walnut prawns. So Japanese sushi restaurant serving chinese dishes. Nice. Add kimchi, kalbi bbq and it can be a Japanese, Chinese, Korean restaurant. wtf. If they can't make a decent tempura or cook soba noodles correctly, I'm not going to waste my time and money with their sushi. read more

I have had decent experiences here in the past, but the last time I went Sushi Tozai officially proved itself to be a one star establishment. First off the service was TERRIBLE!!! A moment after a sitting down, the server brought to glasses to the table. My companion took one glance at her glass and asked for another, seeing dried grime on the bottom and sides of it. The server literally gave her a look as if she has asked her a very inappropriate question and started to grill her on way she wanted a new glass. My companion had to take the glass and show the server spot by spot all the grime that was in it. It had either not been washed or washed very poorly. The server eventually conceded with a "I guess you can have a new glass...." Next our waitress. a white 40 to 50 something looking brunette lady came to the table. She was not personable, stand offish and in general not educated on the menu. She ended up bringing the wrong dish to the table, and it took another whole situation in order to get the right dish, as she tried to claim that we had miss ordered. When the food came it was very poor. The miso was to salty, the fish was not fresh and when my spider roll came, it had a sauce on it that almost tasted rotten. The sauce literally ruined the roll. Lastly, an on going problem with this place since the first time I went there is the ambiance. So much wood, bamboo and hard surfaces that the standing sound waves in that room just make it hard to be in. It is incredibly loud and hard to have a conversation when the restaurant has a decent amount of people in it. The need to put in some carpet or add acoustic paneling the walls or something to soak up some of that noise. Best advice in the world: go to Sushi Hanna and enjoy good service, good food and a cool fish tank read more

Great spot the sushi is fresh clean with a good size sake menu and a very impressive wine menu carrying many of the local wines with in Sonoma County. A place that has melt in your mouth salmon sashimi and carries fresh uni is good in my book. read more

Not too atmospheric or dressy, but very effective when it comes to fresh sushi. The rolls are big and flavorful (I'm a fan of the eel and the spicy yellow tail personally) , the tea has a magical "burn" taste and free, the prices are fair and the place is dimly lit and sort of soothing - the sushi is the main star here. read more

Service isn't that great, also the Asian hostess never greets her customers with a smile. She always look like she's annoyed or unhappy with her job. Have loved this place for a long time. I first landed here within a year of their opening. Always look forward to this place as a part of my occassional journies to west Sonoma county. And, while those trips are far fewer now (it's been over a year), I am finally planning to be up there again soon. So, thought I'd check the reviews and add a long-due one of my own. My orders here can cover a lot of territory. My more regular items: Spider Roll, Sebastopol Roll (fave!), Dragon Roll, Caterpillar Roll, salmon and/or maguro nigiri. Good sake selection, too. Cannot recall a time I didn't walk out of there with a big smile and a full happy belly, regardless of what I ate. So, food.. a definite 4/5. And, we Yelpers love to round up, and I rate heavily (and usually only) on the food which is solidly good and not too pricey. That said, the service can be a little challenged. I've had my share of times trying to catch an eye, waiting a little (ok, or long) while for something. but if it doesn't completely tick me off or isn't beligerent, I'm fine. We all have bad days. I do see an uptick in 1/2 star ratings in the last year or so. Some point to staffing (kitchen) changes since last I was there. So, while I figure things will be just fine (negative reviews happen, and this place still manages to hold their 4-star rating), I look forward to providing a follow-up/update in the coming weeks. Decent enough, but definitely not great. Very bland overall. All the rolls seem to taste about the same. The quality of fish and rice was mediocre like they got it at the local Safeway. In fact, Safeway sushi is just like this but cheaper. The service was lacking as well. We felt very much ignored. When there are only 1 or 2 other couples in the place, you would think you could get a little better service. We had to flag our waitress 6 times (yes SIX) to get things like water and the final bill. There are plenty of other sushi places out there. I was in town and decided to phone in a takeout order: veggie tempura and eggplant rolls. The lady on the phone said it would take twenty minutes and it did; it was ready as soon as I walked in. The veggie tempura could have been deep fried for a little bit longer. Some pieces the batter still tasted a bit raw. However, the veggies used were very fresh! The eggplant roll also tasted fresh - especially the seaweed. I would give this place a second chance for the veggie tempura. Will try again! read more

Sushi Tozai, hands down is the best sushi in Sonoma County! My favorite thing to get is the carberutor roll. They have a great selection and the staff is knowledgable about the items on the menu. Diana was our waitress, she was very friendly and gave us some recommendations on new things to try. They were very busy but I never felt rushed by her. Last night was my second time coming to Sushi Tozai which is in Sebastopol, CA. The first time coming here I recall not being very impressed and leaving full but not eager to return. That was well over 2 years ago. My date and I where craving sushi, he insisted on coming to Sushi Tozai although I secretly wanted Sushi Hana which is just a few blocks away. The ambiance is nice here, you feel like you are entering a very traditional style sushi house. They have great wood detailing from the floor all the way to the ceiling. There is also a very nice looking sushi bar for those you like to have a show while they eat. We ordered Edamame, 4 raw oysters on half shell, he had the walnut prawn dinner combo and we the shared two rolls: The carburetor and a fried chicken roll with cream cheese and horseradish sauce. The entire bill came to $50. I was very surprised since sushi for two can go well over $100. However I think the reason the bill was so little is because I was not impressed with their choices. The menu was way to familiar and nothing jumped out at me. Same old same old. The one thing I can say is you will not leave dehydrated. We had two waiters bringing us water after we drank just a few sips. Maybe it was my date, maybe it was my mood, or the weather, but I don't think sushi tozai would be my first choice for sushi in Sonoma County. read more
