My parents and I had been to this place a handful of times over the couple of years that we've lived in the neighborhood. Never having been really impressed with the food or service, we didn't make it a point to be regulars. My mother and I decided to go back today just so we could have something light to eat (if mediocre) and we were both pleasantly surprised by the change in decor, quality of food, and the service! I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and an avocado hand roll, while my mother ordered the miso soup and the Valentine roll. My mother's soup came first and was good. Then both of our rolls came pretty soon after that, all of which we were very happy with. The fish (salmon, tuna, and yellowtail) in my mother's roll were very fresh, as was the shrimp and avocado in my rolls as well. Along with this, our server was very friendly, a huge improvement to the surly waiters this restaurant had in the past. The owners (or maybe new management?) clearly went out of their way to up their game and pull in new customers. Love this place. Come here almost everyday. I work around the corner. Everything is always fresh and prepared when ordered. The staff is super polite and friendly. Be sure to try either the blue crab roll, which is simply amazing or the lunch special... you get two or three rolls (of your , edamame, two fried shrimp shumai, house salad with delicious ginger dressing and a miso soup. They have the best lunch and dinner combo in my delivery area and somehow I always end up gravitating towards ordering from them. Now, I can't say they have the "freshest" fish or vegetables, but I will say, they deliver (not just delivery-wise) consistent sushi that tastes great. First of all, I HATE when places can't list their credit card minimums OUT IN THE OPEN and you usually don't find out until you are about to pay and are well below the minimum.... WHICH HAPPENED TO ME! UGH! I wandered in here for takeout. I had been meaning to hit up this place but I don't crave sushi like I do pizza or coffee. I ordered the chicken teriyaki dinner bento box which came with the chicken (obviously), white rice (could have been more rice), miso soup, salad, a 6 piece california roll, AND shrimp shumai (might have been a 6 pieces too). I got all of this for $11.50....however, I was below the $15 minimum. So I ordered the pork gyoza (also chicken and veggie were options as well). When I got home I was seriously amazed by the amount of food I got for just $16.90. Holy crap! SO MUCH! It was delicious though I wished there was more rice (you can't eat all that chicken without enough rice!). Though I am ASIAN and also love seafood, I honestly crave sushi about twice per year, if that. What prompted my quest for sushi in Windsor Terrace of all places was "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," a Tribeca documentary I'd seen earlier that night. I guarantee you that every last viewer of this poignant tribute to the 85-year-old, Michelin 3-star decorated sushi master of Tokyo (and perhaps the universe) fanned out all over the city afterwards to satiate their hunger with nigiri and sashimi. I was one of these people, but didn't want to go somewhere fancy. Some place called Monster Sushi was close to the theatre, but looked hideous and gimmicky. On Prospect Park West, I could see the telltale oblong red paper lanters swaying at the doorway of Sushi Yu. "Sanitation Grade B" was the first thing I saw in the window, prompting me to continue onwards with barely a glance. In the restaurant world, B does not stand for "very good" as it does on report cards - it's B for BAD. I saw another set of red lanterns off a bit in the distance. When I reached the source of the light, I saw a "Sanitation Grade Pending" sign and one sleepy chef inside with zero customers, yawning without covering his mouth. So it was that I returned to Sushi Yu. What few guests were there had convened around a tiny fishtank with a giant koi imprisoned in it. A very friendly, raspy-voiced man and two shy hostesses greeted me. I took a seat and surveyed the menu while trying to block out the white upper middle class toddlers demanding the delicacies of miso soup and California rolls. Me, I was ready to get down with some raw shit. After a scalding hot oshibori smelling faintly of a pool locker room was delivered to me, I asked whether certain selections were available. Neither tuna belly (toro) nor sweet shrimp (aka raw shrimp) were there that day, so I defaulted to the $14 nine piece sashimi entree and added a bowl of rice. Then, the show began. The three Chinese chefs behind the counter started doing some crazy things; donning and removing plastic gloves, placing a blinking plastic raver light inside a martini glass, unwrapping wads of fish...As I sipped my potentially instant but passably tasty miso soup and viewed the spectacle, the three men piled a hill of carrot and radish shavings into the now blinking martini glass, and integrating the vegetable tower with a bizarre bed of garnishes below. Six pairs of hands all over my food, and I wanted to shout "JUST GIVE ME THE FISH!" But I didn't have the heart, and was moved to a state of near embarrassment by their protracted efforts. Had I wanted an aesthetic presentation, I might have been impressed. However, wanting edibility and simplicity, I was a bit put off by the final result; pieces of assorted sashimi tucked in, around, and under a wonderworld of carrots, nettly lettuce, radish, and lemon, all bordered by cream and neon red colored squirts of mystery sauce. Taking care that no piece of fish touched the Pollock styled sauce formations, I painstakingly worked the fish out of the weave and placed them one by one on the rice. For once, I was not tempted to eat the garnishes, having seen them be handled like a kindergarten group craft project. Now, the rice...SUCKED. I don't want to blame it on the Chinese owned establishment, but I guess I am doing that, as the rice was crumbly and long grained with the unmistakable fragrance of the cheapest Jasmine rice as featured in dollar entry Chinese food restaurants. Delicious with General Tsao's, but horrifying in the presence of the flesh of sea creatures that perished to melt in my mouth. The wasabi was dry and almost hard. I at first thought that it was stale until I broke open a clump, put the mixture in my mouth, and almost passed out. Most of the fish slices were still conjoined. I don't know much, but I know this: sushi chefs should not use serrated bagel knives on fine fish! Jesus! However, the meat itself was generously portioned (I think there were actually twelve pieces, sliced thick) and sweet tasting. I caught myself missing squid, octopus, shrimp, and mackerel, and this is how I learned that these treats are not to be expected everywhere. All at once, I realized I'd somehow become spoiled from my bi-annual sushi meals which did include these components as if by protocol. I walked away with a couple lessons. 1. If you watch a movie about a world class sushi chef, the last thing you actually want do is go get sushi in a random spot. You think it's what you want, but it's not. 2. Do NOT order rice at a Chinese owned sushi place unless you have seen the rice first. It could seriously ruin your day at the end of your day. When all was said and done, though, I got my fix; who cares if it was (figuratively, possibly) cooked in an alleyway on a rusty spoon. read more

Everything about this place was superb...except the food. But, the food wasn't horrible. It just wasn't great either. We found this place on Seamless when we were too lazy to lift our heads and go out and get some dinner. And since it was so late, options were limited as to what could be delivered to my hotel room. We ordered some spicy tuna rolls at $4.50 each, some miso soup at $1.50 each (massive portion by the way...), and Philadelphia rolls at $4.50 each. Our total bill came to barely $20, and that included tip and all taxes. The food was supposed to take 30-45 minutes to arrive, but was here within 20 minutes. The place was close by, but they definitely busted their butts to get it delivered and delivered quickly. Ok...now onto the food. The spicy tuna roll was blah. Edible, but not tasty. I expected it to come with spicy mayo, as every single time I've had them in the US they come that way. It was mashed tuna with some type of dry chili spice and panko crumbs. The panko crumbs did not help the taste but actually gave it a strange texture instead. The miso was a little too sweet for me, but not bad. Especially for how little I paid! And my fiance said the Philly rolls were just okay. If I lived in the area, I'm not sure I'd go back to this place and order the same thing. But based on their efficiency, smiling service upon delivery, and cheap prices, I would be more than willing to try some of their other menu items! read more

After the service and food that we received last night we will never order from this restaurant again. There are too many decent Japanese places in the neighborhood to waste money on this place. We have ordered from this place a handful of times and it was decent food at a decent price; until most recently. Our food was much later than the 45-60 min estimate, when we called to check on it the phone rang, rang, rang, no answer; 4 times. When they finally arrived they yelled at us for not tipping, although we tipped through the Seamless order. The delivery person legitimately got into an argument with us saying that we needed to tip when he arrived, we refused since we had tipped upon ordering. Even after all of that the sushi was absolutely terrible. It was not even close to what we have received previously, the rolls came with odd numbers of pieces, which doesn't even make sense, and it looked like he had shaken the package up before delivering it. I am a fan because my cousin/I live nearby...and they are our go-to sushi place! Rolls are reasonably priced and fresh. Slices are bite-size and orally-socially-acceptable. Special rolls are a definite must-try, the Kitty House and Dynamite Roll are good. They are sometimes inconsistent with the vegs. Free pineapple for dessert when you eat in. We get edamame on the house when we order for delivery, since we eat there once every two weeks. I have many pet peeves. And Sushi Yu hit one of them. This is not a pet peeve that most people have. In fact, I'd say that at least 98% of the orders that go to Sushi Yu don't have this problem, but here it is: I hate it when a sushi restaurant has Unagi Don on the menu, and what you get are a bunch of sushi sized pieces of eel on a bed of rice. This is not unagi don! Nobody would accept this for other meats/fishes. Could you imagine getting a chicken teriyaki, and getting a bunch of small pieces of individually cooked chicken on rice? I've ordered delivery from here twice, once via Delivery.com and once via Seamless. The first was a dinner order, which was far superior to our second, a lunch order. On the lunch, the spicy whitefish, spicy salmon and spicy tuna were all lacking any heat. It was pretty much just minced fish in a maki. When I order a spicy roll, I want some spice! The miso soup that came with the Three Roll Bento and our shumai were both luke warm to cold. Considering the place had just opened up for lunch and our food was here in about 40 minutes, I was not expecting that to be an issue. Also, the included inari needed some sort of sauce to add some sweetness, as it was near flavorless otherwise. The only standout roll was the Amazing Roll we ordered, which tasted fresh and went quite well with its ginger garlic sauce. We'll certainly need to order from here again at least one more time for lunch (and for dinner) to see if this was just an off day. But yeah, as of now Sushi Yu is best for dinner, not for lunch. It might be as simple as needing to hire a better lunch sushi chef. read more

This reviewer has been grossly unfair to Sushi Yu. Despite having very nearly tripped over their delivery Vespa every other day for the last nine months, I tend not to think of them at dinner time. There are a few reasons for this oversight, all of which are relevant to this review. Firstly, the interior of the restaurant is particularly uninspiring, dominated by rather plain oak-stained panels. One walks in, and immediately says "Eh!" -- not exactly the best way to encourage folks to thrust a troop of friends into the door for a cheery meal. Neither is it the place to impress a date. Also, in all objectivity, the food -- with the exception of an avocado salad so consistently fresh that one envisions the chef plucking the ingredients from the vines, five minutes earlier -- is remarkable only in its representation of the average. Not that mediocrity stops other NYC Japanese joints (like Manhattan's Sushi Samba) from packing in a crowd. In their case, a glitzy setting and a parade of pretty people simply distract from the food. (Those who peruse my other reviews will note my proclivity to fizz with particularly vehement scorn over high-gloss/mediocre food combinations). There are, however, two big exceptions that largely redeem Sushi Yu, especially if one views them as a take-out option: price and service. Their prices are by far the lowest of any Japanese restaurant in recent memory. The house special maki rarely rise above $10 per roll. And where else can one order a bento box of salmon teriyaki that includes salad, miso soup, a California roll, shumai, rice, and a healthy chunk of fish and vegetables for a total of $11? It's also worth noting that take-out orders have never taken more than seven minutes from the moment I ordered to the instant I was handed the bag. New York City's population of prosaic sushi sites may take second only to its collection of even more glaringly iffy Italians. At least at Sushi Yu, one finds some honest reasons to stand apart from the pack. I'll try not to scratch their scooter. read more

Despite what others would say, I found this place to be extremely friendly with delicious, delicious sushi and a wonderful atmosphere. I ordered the chirashi ($15, a very reasonable price) as I usually do in order to gauge all the facets of the restaurant's sushi. At first, the salmon didn't look appetizing (not as firm and "blocky" as usual) but it was better than melt-in-your-mouth and not fishy at all. Tuna was firm with lots of texture. The whitefish was just excellent and the pickles fresh. Combine that with the fact that this place is tucked in a very cute neighborhood and has an adorable garden makes this a sure winner in my book. Moreover, the staff are some of the friendliest I have ever encountered, no exaggeration. Our Chinese waiter (let's be honest--how many Japanese restaurants are actually run by Japanese people?) was surprised but delighted when my waif-like friend wolfed down the entire $12 chicken teriyaki dinner combo (a veritable mountain of food) and rubbed his belly at the end of the meal! Overall I was so pleasantly surprised to find reasonably priced sushi (maybe because I live in Manhattan?) with a comforting atmosphere and incredibly attentive and friendly staff. I ordered last night and it took all of 20 or 25 minutes to get to me (I admit, I live pretty close). I went on a date there once and after a couple rounds of sake we got a small bottle on the house. Sort of a funny hodgepodge of stuff--the shumai comes with a maraschino cherry, and they throw in some Hershey's chocolates with orders to go. I stumbled across this place after heading up the hill for a fantasy football draft and not realizing I didn't know a hamster from a hill of beans once I got past 7th Ave. What? You don't think of sushi when you think of fantasy football? Turns out Sushi Yu isn't too bad a place to grab some sushi. I'm pretty basic when it comes to my order (a roll combo usually suffices) and I found the tuna and salmon roll to be of good quality. The pieces contained a plethora of fish (minimal rice) and were pretty big around. I ordered an extra roll ('cause I was hungry) and some edamame and it filled me up. We were in the neighborhood and looking for something quick to eat since I was really, really hungry. What's that I see in the distance but a sign advertising "Sushi and Chinese". Another one of those spots that's become a mainstay in NYC: a Chinese restaurant that realized people will pay more money for uncooked fish than cooked fish. You know the typical signs: staff speaks Mandarin or Cantonese, nice dark wood paneling as the decor, sushi and Chinese food on the menu, maybe some Thai, and soda by the can. On this temperate late spring night they had their accordion front wall open and it was nice. As we were looking over the menu a homeless person had come in and was begging at tables. A staff member very quickly asked them to leave and when they resisted, became just forceful enough to get them to leave. All sympathy considered, good on the restaurant staff for handling that correctly. We ordered one Chinese style appetizer and one Japanese: Shanghai cabbage with lemongrass and chicken yakitori respectively. Both were pretty good though not sure I tasted the lemongrass influence on the bokchoy. As for the main part of our meal we ordered 5 rolls between the two of us. They were all great. With the 2 appetizers, 5 specialty rolls, and two sodas, the total came to somewhere between $70 and $80. We left full and with some leftovers. read more

Today, I decided to order delivery, and I relived that moment. The sweet potato roll is slightly warm and slightly crunchy. This isn't because it's undercooked; it's actually tempura-style. It's just slightly sweet, which is especially delicious with salty soy sauce. The inari sushi is a good size and has a great flavor.
