My dad insists we eat here whenever he is in town. The food is tasty and always seems freshly prepared. The staff is nice and very welcoming to everyone who comes in. Almost as if customers are guests in their homes. They also seem to have an extensive dessert selection. Tonight I saw cheesecake, red velvet cake, and eclairs. The only reason I am only giving 3 stars is because I HATE the HUGE tv that is impossible to miss and very loudly playing either jeopardy or the evening news. Sushi Zen has a good amount of seating with booths and seats at the conveyor belt. If you want something made fresh, just ask anyone and BAM, done. Sushi Zen favors serving sugary sauce covered rolls that are tailored towards those who like to turn the raw smooth taste of good fresh fish into bon-bons. The lack of sashimi on the conveyor belt is a key indicator that this place will not equal what even a small Cali sushi bar will serve. But, the prices are alright..so maybe worth going back if you know what to order or if you know the fish is fresh. DO NOT order the teriyaki! The microwaved chicken was rubbery and sauce was nasty. I ate here with a friend today, and it was the first time for me. This is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, with not just one, but TWO conveyor belts (each going in opposite directions). The price for their conveyor sushi plates range from $1 to $3.25, so it's easy to not spend too much money here if you don't want to. They also have a menu of specialty sushi dishes that you can order for around $8-$12. Their sushi is good & tasty, too - I can't complain there. Also, when we arrived (at around 3:30PM), we were informed that it was happy hour, so if we ordered a drink, any plate from the conveyor belt would be just $1. Woo-hoo! So, I ordered a Pepsi. Their menu said their sodas are $1.50, but I think they charged me $1.75 for the Pepsi - maybe they need to update their menu. Still, I think it was a good deal overall. I ended up paying $7.75 for 6 dishes of sushi and a Pepsi. One downside I could say is that there wasn't a whole lot of variety on the conveyor belt when we were there, but that might be because we were there at 3:30PM and there weren't many people eating there. We usually eat a few things off the belt and order a few special things. My mother doesn't like raw fish and she found plenty of things to enjoy when she came with us. This is the best lunch spot for me to take my autistic son. The owners are probably the nicest, most welcoming people I've ever met. They treat my son like he is a guest in their home. He is loud and disruptive at times and the wife turns the tv to kids shows for him with a smile and tells me he isn't loud at all. They allow us to sit in a booth where other sushi restaurants have strictly said no unless we were a party of three or more. Sitting at the carrousel bar seats set my kid up for failure. I've often thought they spoil us. But the other day I watched closer and found they are just this way. Kind and warm and wonderful. Now I will tell you the food is great but you will need a few trips to try all of the delicious menu offerings. Lobster roll, mango roll and the Poke salad are my absolute favorites. And every now and then the husband owner puts a pb&j sandwich cut into triangles on the conveyor for a kiddo with a more selective palette. Just the best family sushi place around. Hands down. I really like Sushi Zen. I hit it at least once every 2 weeks. Although it's on a "conveyor-belt" it is far from any "conveyor-belt" quality. Fresh and tons of variety. They have not gone to the $1.50 plates, like so many others. So you won't find cheapened boring rice-filled plates here. The best ones, at just over $3 are phenomenal. Great flavors and creative combination of rolls (try the lobster one!). They are always very friendly and fast. I try a lot of sushi places. I have worked next to this restaurant for over 3 years and have until today never had lunch here. Why? I have no idea. I'm not the biggest sushi fan, but sometimes I do have a craving. They weirdly add a green bell pepper in it BTW, it doesn't really add much to anything, but it was there. Anyway, you know how usually when something is deep fried and you CAN'T taste the oil and it's a guilty delicious? This roll was not it. In fact the oil taste stayed. I'm not sure what "old oil" or "mixed oil" details, but if that is what makes the oil smell and taste stay with you, especially while you are puking, then I'd say that was the problem. Look closely at the plate you choose, some plates have a ton of rice with a very thin piece of fish while others have a small amount of rice & lots of fish on top.
