The prices have increased since my last review and miso soup is no longer free. Bummer.. I don't come here for their rolls. Although they are big and filling, they're just average and overpriced. I come here for only a few things: my combo bento, spicy ahi poke bento, and spicy salmon bento box. The my combo bento has two pieces of fried fish and tempura shrimp. I actually like the fried fish with the sauce they give you. It's crunchy. It comes with two pieces of California roll. On Tuesdays, they're $1 off so that's when I'd get this bento. I've been in the search for some spicy ahi poke or spicy salmon. The closest one I've found that I really liked is Yoshino's Deli in Carlsbad, which is pretty far from where I live. SushiMan is closer. Their spicy ahi poke ($10) and spicy salmon ($9) is actually not bad, at least to me. They come with rice, some edamame, gyoza, and a small salad. Stopped here for lunch and the restaurant has changed some. They have expanded the dining area by adding tables and chairs before they only had booths, it looks good. But when you first walk in the door there is still a slight odor, not like food cooking but a musty stale odor. The longer you stay in the restaurant the less you smell that odor. I ordered the Chicken Maki Roll and the Beef Maki Roll to go. The Chicken Maki was tender and had a nice flavor but the Beef Maki was chewy and not tender. The hostess/waitress/register girl was very nice and pleasant. This restaurant has many sushi items and they are all posted on the outside front windows of the restaurant. I don't like it. But I guess it serves a purpose if you want an idea of the sushi they have to offer before you come in. The restaurant was not busy but it took over 10 minutes before I got my order. Pros: affordable Cons: Food is ok in quality but the main downside to eating here is the complete lack of respect the ownership has for its customers. Owner/chef came out from the back to slam dunk an order i had placed and was bagged up ready to go for me. I work at a retail location neighboring the restaurant and I'm a very chill and mild mannered guy. I deal with temperamental customers all day long so I try my best not to perpetuate that behavior myself. I went here on my 30 min lunch break because I didn't want to pay $30 for Postmates and this place is a small business and looks family owned and I really enjoy frequenting places like this to support local small businesses. The cashier was nice enough. Stressed but nice. She had me wait a few minutes for her to complete a phone order. I had no problems. I'm fully dressed in uniform and wearing a name tag. Place my order. I ask for dine-in. Chicken katsu and a canned coke. Nothing crazy. I'm about to pay and i realize they don't accept tap to pay so i let her know I'm just going to grab my wallet out of my car and she said that's fine and asked for the customer behind me to kindly wait while I return. Im parked right up front. Not even 15 secs go by and she clears my order in the system and takes the next customers order. That's cool. Maybe they communicated with the cooks and started my order first and they were just trying to get things done with the idle time. I understand so i don't complain. Cashier re-rings up my order and charges me. She doesn't quote me with a wait time but I've had orders here in the past 5-10 mins tops. Not worried about it. She calls out an order 10 mins in and i stand up thinking it's mine but it turns out to be the person who ordered behind me. No big deal. Maybe hers just prepares much faster. 20 mins passes and at this point i barely have enough time to head back to work even though I'm 2 mins away. I no longer have enough time to eat my food before I'm back to work. So i kindly and politely request to cancel my order and i explained these reasons. The cashier is upset and lets me know i shouldn't have ordered this as it takes 20 mins to prepare and says to just be aware of that next time. She goes back to relay this information to the chef/owner. I let her know that's totally fine. I'm not worried or complaining even though I won't be having dinner for my closing shift and I'm pretty hungry but I understand. I let her know i wasn't aware it would take 20 mins and provide my card and receipt. She prepares another order instead of my refund. Then finally the order that i was in the middle of cancelling comes out. Cashier bags it and passes it to me and says "hey that's ok just take it but next time be aware of the wait." In my head I'm like alright. Well this makes up for it. I appreciate the effort and i thank her. But in that moment, her boss/chef comes walking out in a fuss and asks "where is it" and finds my order then slams the bag of food in the trash before me with a house full of customers behind me. I'm not exaggerating when i explain the force at which she threw it lol. I have seen this lady's perspiring armpits is how high above her head she winded back to slam this order into the trash. I don't retaliate or respond I just kinda chuckle and sign the refund receipt and calmly leave the restaurant. I've worked for many mom and pop food establishments before as a server and a cook/cashier and these businesses depend on local regulars to keep the business thriving. To disrespect a customer who also works in the same complex in front of other customers and disrespecting food in order to do it? Could have been tossed out in the back, i wouldn't have minded. It was nothing but $12 for my order. The price wasn't the issue. But for that disrespect, I've let all my friends and family and coworkers know not to visit this establishment for this reason. Ordered take out here one evening and everything was great! I called the order in, woman on the phone said the wait was a little longer than usual but we'll have our food within 30-40 mins. I wanted to order a platter but they are not customizable. Instead, I ordered 4 different rolls: dynamite, rainbow, California, shrimp tempura. The shrimp tempura was more of a side dish, so there was 4 rolls in that plate. The 8 piece bigger rolls came with a small salad and 2 gyoza, it was really nice. I've found the best Ahi Poke that I've ever had in San Diego so my rating is mostly based on that. I found SushiMan in Eastlake over a year ago and was hooked on their Ahi Poke Donburi/Bowl. I would drive all the way down to Chula Vista whenever the craving hit me...keep in mind I live near North Park. Sooo, can you imagine my excitement when I found this location near the gym that I started working out at!? I'm a regular now and pop in once a week after a good workout and having Ahi Poke on my mind was usually my motivation to workout harder :) The prices are very decent for their special rolls and they have bentos as well as noodle dishes. Every time I've seen the rolls coming out of the kitchen, they look so appetizing and HUGE! I'll definitely have to try some one of these days. I've only had their Ahi Poke Donburi/Bento and their Salmon Donburi/Bento...they also have a spicy version of both dishes but the cook can be a little too heavy handed with the spiracha, in my opinion. The staff is very friendly and whenever my kids are with me, I usually like to keep them occupied by having cartoons on the big screen and the staff is always so accommodating with my request. I always pass by this place when go to Walmart and every time I look, there is no one in there. The place is pretty small, a few tables, and really cheap decor. I always stop by to look at the menu on the window but was never tempted to buy anything. It looked like a dinky place with a small selection of pricey sushi and I was really surprised at how high the star rating was on yelp. So I finally tried it because I need a quick meal so I got a spicy salmon roll to go. The sushi roll was pretty big and it also came with some miso soup. The miso soup was nothing special. Just tasted like the instant stuff that I pour hot water over and call soup. The sushi was actually pretty decent. Better than what the place perceived. The salmon was pretty fresh and the rice was not too dry and the portion was a decent size for $8. I was actually almost full. Maybe a couple more pieces will do. Wasn't the best sushi that I had but it exceeded my expectations of what I thought it would be like. Their sushi rolls comes with goyza and salad, I love that they don't just serve you the roll by it's self and expect you to get full of that. Yum! The quality of sushi is top notch, lots of options, including non-sushi items. The udon is delicious! Also the volcano chicken is the perfect mix of spicy and sweet. I love that the maki rolls come with edamame, gyoza, and a salad. You get a lot for your money. The ginger is the best I've had at a sushi joint in a very long time.
