The good: *The fish is extremely fresh and tasty *The service is friendly and efficient *The prices are reasonable (and you get 15% off if you check in) The bad: *Not the greatest neighborhood *Located in a strip mall next to a dog groomer *The decor is sorely outdated If you can make it past the shady area, location and lack of ambience, it is a winner on food merit alone. Saw Sushiya when I was going to Albertsons for some groceries. It's hidden in the corner of the Albertsons strip mall, but it's definitely worth stopping in. My girlfriend and I ordered the Sushi Chef's Entree which was 8 pieces of sushi and a tuna roll, then we added on a California roll and a bowl of egg drop soup and hot tea. The hot tea was very good. It was served loose leaf and had some rice in it which gave it an interesting taste. Both of the rolls and sushi were prepared very well and tasted great. I just came back from a 6 month stint in Los Angeles and this was as good as anything I could find there. The interior is very well maintained. Nothing was broken or cheap looking like you can find at some sushi/fusion places. The presentation was great. The prices were very reasonable. Wow- I don't know what the person calling this "americanized" is thinking- we are in America, the California roll was begun in San Fran. ...... "rolls" as they are now are served all over the world- even in Spain you can get a cali roll.... And how the roll has modernized is a new art form. If sushi stayed like it was in 1910- Jiro would have never been the man he is- that's how I feel about Sushiya- modern, upbeat, and in my top Abq sushi joints. The establishment is clean, nicely lit and has a very fresh yet relaxed Asian zing to it. Most places a re drab and dark, Sushiya goes the opposite- light so you can see the quality sushi. I was slightly disappointed this go around- the Tuna was clean and well proportioned, the several different rolls we ordered were put together well- chef had good knife skills and the fish was all fresh cut. we're it was off was in the technique of the tempura- must have been a new chef because the rice layer was far too thin and it was obviously left too long- the tempura was soaked through the rice and the salmon inner was cooked beyond well- so it was just chewy and blamd. The rice as well was not washed properly I don't think- it was not seasoned in the least and you could taste it was a store bought cheap rice. So unfortunately this time around it was not the standard it used to be- but hopefully it was just an off night because typically this is a sure shot quality establishment. Oh- and to the one who doesn't know about green chile--- it's called marketing- playing to your clientel..... and Sushiya makes a very very good green Chile roll!!!! read more

Great sushi in Albuquerque and on a Sunday can happen! Yum! Came for lunch, it was very quiet (just what I needed) and sat at the bar. Be sure to order the Buddha Belly roll. It was terrific! As was all of the sushi. And this may not seem like a big deal to some but the miso soup was also great and not too salty. I have been a bit under the weather and haven't eaten much the past week. William is the Sushi chef at Sushiya. He and his wife Heidi are the owners. All the soups are great. Sweet and Sour is my husband's favorite and mine is the miso. Try one of their specials of the day. They're located on the board as soon as you walk in the door. I really like the Monkey Balls. My husband LOVES the Pad Thai and the Bento Boxes. I only order sushi since it's the best sushi in Albuquerque. We've been to almost every sushi restaurant in Abq and this one is the best hands down! Our favorite thing to order is the Sushiya, which means whatever sushi roll William wants to make us. The Sushiyas are so good, you don't need to add wasabi or dip it in soy sauce. We also love the calamari, butter mignon, and the salmon salad with William's special sauce, Albacore sashimi, vegetable & shrimp tempora, among tons of other things! I enjoy the William loves what he does & it shows! Service is excellent. We have a 15 mo old. Everytime he makes a mess, as I start to clean up at least one staff member comes over to tell me not to worry about it that they'll clean it up after and it's no problem. I enjoyed my lunch at Sushiya today. A friend and I ordered the Kung Pao chicken lunch ($6.95) and the "pick 2" sushi lunch special ($8.95). The Kung Pao chicken was hot and fresh. There was the perfect amount of food. I meant to take photos but I just started eating right away and forgot :( the lunch came with soup, rice, an egg roll and an orange. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and it was a good sized roll. I think the 2 rolls for $8.95 was an excellent deal and I will be back. There is nothing better then after a strenuous hike having sushi and we will definitely be coming back here often for "Sushi Saturday" We started off with the hot and sour soup with the Squid Salad, OMG!!! The food: The sushi was good. It's your standard sushi but I think it lacked uniqueness in taste. Our shrimp tempura sushi had those crispy flakes on top and it tasted funny. We came here for a second dinner 30 minutes before closing time and they were able to still sit us. We ordered the ceviche and the chirashi. We are from Dallas and there's a lot of good sushi there, so we didn't expect much coming here. But it is not bad if you are not spoiled by good sushi elsewhere. The value is pretty good. The staff is always friendly and the restaurant is clean and well kept. We have been here at least 5 times and are always stuffed and very happy. I usually get the Crab Rangoon and the Crunch Roll. My husband usually gets a California roll and Nigiri. I dont recommended, the sushi was poorly built so every roll fell apart. The one roll was honestly so fishy we couldn't even stomach to swallow. I did however really enjoy the crab ragoon and the Caterpillar roll was pretty good. The waitress completely walked away from me twice while I was trying to ask a question. I'm a waitress and I don't think it was busy enough for the lack of service. We didn't get napkins after we asked, waited 10 minutes after our sushi arrived for soy sauce ramekins, and they never stopped by to see how everything turned out. As someone in the service industry I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but they didn't even say goodbye. They have the most light and fluffy fried rice!!! I instantly fell in love. The prawns with candied pecans was so delicious- I was sad when I was full, but even as a left over they were delicious. I was a little disappointed with the sesame shrimp- unlike the other entrees- it did not warn us that it was breaded, it was a heavier meal than anticipated with two battered proteins, but we know better for next time. We went there last night as they were almost closing. They did have one other customer. The place smelled of cleaning solution. They should have waited until there were no customers to start their cleaning process. They did not have the A/C on so it was warm. A restaurant should never have carpet as it was dirty. The young waitresses had horrible music playing in the background which was not restaurant friendly. A song came on that was piercing to our ears and we were shocked that they would allow a song like that to play. Look up "Kurt Cobain bean song" on YouTube. I picked this place due to the yelp rating but I was so upset with myself for staying and ordering. We had just come from another sushi restaurant that had a 30 minute wait and this place was only a few minutes away so we took a chance. The food was just ok. They need to remodel and revamp their menu or at least taste their food before putting it on their menu. They also need to pick generic music instead of having young waitresses pick their own music. read more

I didn't take any pictures - sorry! This place is my new go-to after tough days on the job. First, I sat at the sushi bar. While I tried to figure out what to eat, becuase it all looked awesome, the guy behind the bar made me a cool little salad, free. It was crunchy and amazing. Second, I asked for the "eskimo" roll without avocado, which I'm allergic to. "No problem!" But best of all, the entree I ordered, which I'm still dreaming about: Sesame shrimp. it was shrimp tempera in a sauce that was not too sweet, nice and ume, on a bed of broccoli. There was a bowl of rice on the side, but there was enough there without it and it was delish! If I can ever figure out what it's called I'll edit this. It's one of the best dishes I've ever had. So far, the best sushi place we've been to here. Fish is decent- could be a little more fresh but for the price, very good and large pieces. For example, tuna was a little stringy, but the seared ahi was pretty tender. We got the Love Boat for Two and two extra rolls (Nob Hills and Buddha Belly) and it was plennnnty of food. The Love Boat is a great deal for all that you get. The seaweed salad could be a little lighter and fresher, but the tempura was good. This is our favorite Sushi Place in Albuquerque and it also has a wide assortment of other dishes, even a Cajun plate. The owner, Vicky, often waits our table while her husband (also an owner of course) prepares the sushi. I order a mix of sushi rolls about half the time or one of the plates (which Vicky has learned I want double extra hot). There are many other sushi restaurants in town which I like (and a few that I don't) but we always make it back to Sushiya. read more

I can't understand all of the terrific reviews. I ordered delivery from this place and not only did I not get all the products I ordered, but had this been served to me in the restaurant it would have been sent back. They placed the sushi in with the hot food, and it tasted old. The beef teriyaki was half-inch pieces of rock hard, burned meat mixed with celery, onions and zucchini and a water, tasteless teriyaki sauce. Any good restaurant uses slices. I got three pieces of tempura, including the shrimp with sweet and sour dipping sauce. What?. I ordered crab ragoon and the sauce for it - also sweet and sour. Ordered from these guys several times since the pandemic hit. I totally recommend placing your order online and going to pick up. Since it is sushi, you really don't want it sitting around for too long. They'll give you an ETA if you call. The one time we trusted a Grubhub dude, it came like 20-30 minutes late, and it wasn't nearly as good as the times we went to pickup. Am I the only one who finds it strange to see hot and sour soup and kung pao chicken on the menu of a "Japanese" restaurant? That said, I come here pretty regularly since it is in my hood. C'mon, everyone, let's all eat here regularly and keep it in business! Located in an off-the-street strip mall (next to the Albertson's grocery store), it's not the most eye-catching location. It deserves better. The interior is beautiful and calming, with dark red walls and Asian lute music playing softly in the background. The restaurant bills itself as Asian Fusion (Japanese and Chinese), and it may very well be, but we were in the mood for Japanese food. The kids each got a bento box (beef teriyaki for son, tofu teriyaki for daughter), and spouse and I each got a sushi/sashimi sampler platter. The kids' bento boxes were not as elaborate as some we've come across, but the contents were well prepared. The tofu in particular was awesome: a very light deep-fried coating over extremely fresh smooth tofu cubes. The sushi and sashimi samplers were plentiful and extremely fresh. The prices were really good, too. The bento boxes, at lunchtime at least, were only $9. The samplers were in the $15-$18 range (I forget the exact amount), quite a good price for the amount and quality of what we received. We were waited upon by the sweetest young Chinese woman, and the sushi chef was Chinese too (I overheard them speaking Mandarin). Upon inquiry, we were told that the family is from Taiwan. This explains a lot. A silver lining of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan was the transferal of Japanese cuisine to Taiwan. The Taiwan people really know their raw fish. In retrospect, there *is* an indefinable aura about the preparation and presentation of the food that stamps it as Taiwanese Japanese. Come one, come all! Sushiya won't let you down. read more
