We were looking for a quick dinner in Hanover after a long day of helping my mother-in-law move. She recommended Sushiya which apparently is relatively new in Hanover. I skeptically thought "how good could sushi be in New Hampshire and especially if not run by Japanese folks?" I was glad to be proven wrong! We ordered a variety of different kinds of sushi rolls and sashimi and everything was super fresh and delicious, including the following types of rolls: avocado, california, shrimp tempura, tuna. We also ordered the bi bim bap in the hot stone bowl which was good, not the very best I've ever had (comparing to eating dolsot bibimbap in Seoul, HMarket food markets), but we ate almost all of it and took the rest for leftovers which were polished off the next day, so perhaps even very good! The meals all came with complimentary banchan (small side dishes) of cold bean sprouts, broccoli, pickled spicy zucchini, flavored boiled peanuts (my least favorite banchan), and miso soup. Loved the bean sprouts and broccoli and they brought us more when we finished the first round. Next time we're in Hanover we'll visit Sushiya again for sure! read more

I am literally in awe of this restaurant. Theyre restaurant is run by a hardworking korean family and they bring literally all you could ask for in a small town of Hanover. Im korean and im here for 4 weeks and i miss home so much but this place has genuinely made such authentic korean food that i crave it all the time when im in my dorm. Its literally the exact same as some places in LA and Korea and i couldnt ask for anything better. I love the waiters there and I enjoy conversing in korean with them, i would 10/10 recommend this is definitely the best place in hanover for amazing comfort food and food all around ps i genuinely dont believe any of these rwviews lower than 4 stars-- ur in the middle of nowhere and this restaurant is doing its best to provide and i think its amazing read more

This is going to be rough...I don't think I've ever given one star to anyone before but here it goes. First of all, the staff were nice. But the food...the Shumai omg was the one I microwave and buy frozen all the time if I'm not mistaken the brand was Ajinomoto. $6.50 for 6 pieces, wow! Next, the ramen had a hard boiled egg not ajitama (ramen egg) and the noodles were the same from cup of soup. The sushi was meh, has no taste. Wish I could give zero stars. Ordered dinner online via the website on Google Maps. When coming to pick up my order, the workers insisted we ordered at a different sushi place, despite me showing the receipt. Staff raised their voices at me and insisted I leave after claiming they have no online ordering options AND that the food I ordered wasn't on their menu. After requesting that they continue to search for my order, staff found it but insisted this was a mistake on my part and refused to apologize; no acknowledgement on their part nor offer for compensation in any way (wouldn't give us our money back). The food was mediocre at best and there was a supreme lack of flavor. the ambiance felt like a cafeteria. it was meh overall, so my friend and i didn't feel obliged to leave a tip (the staff also forgot our shrimp tempura). The staff were nice and pleasant enough until they saw my friend and I weren't tipping. Complimentary appetizers were good. Now, the meal. The Special Dragon roll was good, but not cut thoroughly. The ends were not cut at all. Hard to eat a piece that's 3" long. Also, at $23, overpriced. I also had Yaki Udon with shrimp. The veggies were uninspired. Carrots were tough, like they weren't even stir fried. Way too much green pepper. Takeout review- There's no dine in for some reason so it's only takeout and delivery. We stopped by for takeout for lunch on a Saturday and only had to wait about 15 minutes for our food. My tangsuyeok was crispy and the portion was huge so I was happy with that. The soondubu was really lacking in flavor (probably because it has a vegetable broth and not anchovy broth). Jules and I were traveling around Hanover to find a decent place to do our work as well as eat. We were walking down the street (after we failed to order sandwiches at another place) and here we were, immediately informed that lunchtime was over and the dinner menu was in effect. We were fine with that-- at least we would be able to eat! They started us off with appetizers, banchan style, because this is a fusion Korean-Japanese restaurant. I loved the bean sprouts and loved the beans. Our server said they had plenty of the appetizers in the kitchen, so we could have as much as we wanted. Amazing. We ordered the kakuni ramen because it seemed like enough for the two of us to split. We were given two sets of bowls and chopsticks to help us share it. The kakuni ramen was cooked well but did not feel like it had enough depth to the broth. The pork was cooked well though! Our friendly server gave us sriracha but recommended that we get the miso the next time if we wanted a flavor kick. We also split some sushi rolls because I love sushi. Not bad! Sushiya is a gift during C19. The food is healthy, plentiful, and flavorful. They have a great variety of rolls, the fish tastes fresh, and the hot soup is AWESOME in the winter. Try the Udon. Customer service is basic at best, but always quick and polite. Best best is to order over the phone and go pick it up. We always order extra so that we have leftovers, but in truth, no matter how much we order, we usually gobble it up before the next day. Tell them you don't need all the extra plastic crap they include, particularly not the tiny amounts of soy sauce in plastic dishes. Total waste. read more

Arrived alone on a Thursday evening, the place was not busy yet no one greeted me until after a few minutes. Ok, so the expectation to service was lowered a bit. I was given a table, the menu and shortly after a glass of water. I ordered the chicken crunch maki, beef teriyaki and a coke. While I waited 4 small dishes were served, these were actually the only reason I give this place a star; they were good. A little later the chicken crunch maki arrived and I had to remind the waiter that I missed my coke. Two minutes later a canned coke arrived with the beef teriyaki. The chicken crunch was below average, nothing special and a bit too greasy. The beef teriyaki was interesting but not delicious. If you liked the old version of this place when it was called Yama, then you'll still love Sushi Ya, because it's exactly the same. Their sushi's fun and well made. Their Bi Bim Bop is fantastic. And you get all the little side dishes when you order Korean. They're also mindful of food allergies. They have gluten free soy sauce on hand, and they know what's in the food. So I love going there. FYI. The hours on the door don't say their closing time. And their menu says 10pm. But they close at 9pm. We've been turned away twice. read more

Fantastic service, good Korean food. One of the best things about sushiya is their service. The food always comes out quick, even when I go with a large group. The servers are friendly and fun. Several times when I have come with regular customers, they have given us a free roll or dessert. On to the food - Even though Sushiya claims itself as a Japanese and Korean restaurant, I've found that their Korean dishes are much better than their Japanese ones. Their sushi rolls are slightly above average; their sashimi is good, but pricey. I ordered the soondobu jigae - soft tofu stew. You can add kimchi and seafood for an additional cost but I just chose the original. (I've had both in the past and they're both great). It comes in a sizzling hot stone pot with a side of rice. Sushiya does alright as the only Japanese and/or Korean restaurant in town. The rolls I've had are okay, but nothing spectacular. The same goes for the yakiudon I had here. The service here is solid and the atmosphere as a whole is just the right amount of busy every time I've gone; not too loud, but not eerily quiet either. It seems to be a common date spot relative to other places in Hanover and there's always Dartmouth students here on any given night. I would recommend making a reservation beforehand since this place does seem to get a little packed, but at the same time I've never known anyone that's had to wait a long time for a table. If you're going to come here, do yourself a favor and get the Korean food options over the Japanese ones. I've found the Korean selection consistent and tasty relative to the Japanese Regardless of what you order they serve banchan (small cold appetizers type dishes) before you start that give you something to munch on. I've eaten catering from Sushiya multiple times and it's always been on par with my restaurant experiences. There are numerous options for any dietary restrictions and they seem to make a conscious effort to be accommodating. It's a solid restaurant, but the sushi in Sushiya misleads from the tastier options on the menu. read more

Their online ordering platform does not take credit cards, you don't know that, it does not say it anywhere, you just keep getting a message that the information is invalid. After 20 minutes of trying to order called to place my order and only then did I find out you could not use a credit card when ordering online. Placed my order and was told they were very busy, that my order would take an hour and to call later to pay on the phone (my son was picking up, so I needed to prepay). Called 45 minutes later to pay and was told I could pick up, that the food was ready, then they promptly hanged up the phone on me without taking payment. Now I have food that is getting cold since we were planing for one hour and now my son had to pay when he arrived. Now the food, it was not good. I ordered several rolls of sushi, some warm some cold. They put them all together and closed the to go container thereby causing condensation to built up inside the container and of course it sat for over 30 minutes before I got home so the sushi was awful, all of them luke warm and moist. The chicken teriyaki was a dry piece of chicken with some bland sauce and of course not hot any more. Do yourself a favor and go to YAMAS in west lebanon, they were the original owners of the sushiya and that is why their menus are virtually identical. The food however is nothing like YAMAS. This place is alright. Formally Yama, Sushiya is pretty much the exact same thing... but with a new name and new owner I believe. Anyways, the other two reviews make this place sound like an absolutely nightmare. It's really not that bad. I will say that the wait staff doesn't always have the greatest English so it's best to probably keep requests simple or to not have that many requests to start with. I like that they give you the side dishes to start you off with--these are a slight improvement from Yama's. I remember Yama's side dishes literally tasted like nothing.. these at least taste like something. My friend and I split a chirashi bowl and a Green Monster roll. The fish was fresh and pretty good, though nothing outstanding. Rice tasted like sushi rice, and the roll was well-presented. It was a roll with three types of fish and topped with red and black tobiko which was something a little different from what my friend was used to. Service was friendly--they checked up on us, brought us our food in a timely manner, I don't have much to complain about. We tried telling them to split the check earlier on but there was a pretty severe communication issue. No worries though--a restaurant in Hanover is usually pretty used to being handed multiple credit cards and will know to just split the check two/however many ways you need it to be split. tldr; all in all, an okay experience. I learned early on that Sushiya's Korean food is much better than its Japanese, but it does both decently well. The creative rolls definitely aren't authentic, but if you can get over that fact they're pretty good. My friend and I split the Lebanon roll today and though I could barely taste the fish, it was enough to fill my sushi craving. I love love love the Manduguk here--it's an eggy soup with dumplings and rice cakes and clear noodles mixed in, the perfect pick-me-up for the long Hanover winters and definitely a hidden secret. The dumplings are always huge and flavorful; I get meat but you can choose between meat or vegetarian. And the soup, though simple, is incredibly flavorful and just satisfying. On a side note, sometimes they give complimentary dishes, and they gave us potstickers once (made from I'm assuming the same types of dumplings) and they were phenomenal. The lunch specials are also pretty good value for money--yes, the little sides in the bento boxes aren't always the best quality, but you can get some of their dinner dishes (including I believe Manduguk!) for a solid price. read more

Tldr; Like several other customers mentioned on yelp already, got a table to sit at but then proceeded to be totally ignored. Next time just tell us we are not welcome here and we will step outside right away. Try Yama in West Lebanon, a 5 minute drive away. They were the original owners anyway and did a much better job. Went here with my mother for a casual birthday dinner around 7:30pm on a Tuesday night. We were excited to try out the restaurant since it changed hands in the past year and we did hear some nice things about it. We were shown a table but then I had to get up to get a waiter's attention. We placed our orders and asked for tea, everything seemed fine so far. Fifteen minutes later, no tea arrived, no status update of any sort. I waved my hands in the air but was ignored by all the staff. My mother and I decided to walk out since we were decidedly unwelcome. On the way out, I asked for the manager, who began to ask us what the problem was but then he quickly took a phone call, leaving us hanging. Our waiter finally came back to shrug his shoulders with a "I guess I'm sorry". Wow! Cannot get any worse. Perhaps my mother and I offended someone in there because we speak Chinese. She is 59 and we definitely spoke quietly, disturbing no one. Or maybe it's because we were unsure of some of the Korean food's pronunciation.
