Since moving here years ago from a big city, there never was much for variety in food. I had been craving Ramen for ages, and decided to see if anything had come up locallish to me. I saw Sushiya in Hanover, only 20 min from me, and asked a friend if she wanted to go. They were only doing To Go/Takeout, which was surprising, according to the gentleman that greeted us, all "Asian" as he said, all Asian restaurants were all doing Takeout only, which was kind of weird, but we ordered. I got the The Tuck Circle Maki, which a Maki is a roll, this was not a roll, this was a blob of ground tuna, covered in avocado slices and blanketed, and I mean a thick blanket of fish roe. I also ordered the Miso Kakuni Ramen, I was expecting the Ramen to be all in one to go container, but it was separated. The broth was in a container alone, and the noodles and additional ingredients were in a to go tray, the noodles were cold and stiff, and that is not how you prepare ramen noodles. I ended up having to microwave it once I got home. The broth was basic, barely any flavor, not even a bite for being spicy. The best part was the pork, that at least had flavor to it. My friend had just as similar a bad experience, she ended up finding bone in her unagi, hard bones. I will never return to this place, the people were nice at the front, but the food was just unimpressive. read more

I have had sushi from multiple places even in big cities but nothing tops sushiya's tropical roll and they have the basic California roll that's amazing as well. Their ramen is perfect and fried rice is super tasty. Definitely recommend. read more

I was very surprised that so much more than just sushi was on the menu. (I was told there would at least be fried rice on the menu by my host.) What a wide variety of dishes and delicious combinations are available here! A first for me, I had fried salmon, so plentiful and so, so delicious. It was enough for 3 meals. My entrée came with plain white rice, but I had a bit of someone else's fried rice. It was wonderful! Everyone in our party of 5 enjoyed themselves, and surprisingly, no one ordered sushi. Unless "ya" means plus, the owner should consider changing the name to something like Sushi & More or Sushi Plus. read more

It's OKAY! This is not in DC, New York or LA, this is in NEW HAMPSHIRE. And by that standard, it is better than most would expect. It is not the greatest sushi bar, but it is not the worst. If you need a ramen and sushi fix with a little Korean style while at Dartmouth, Sushiya is it. I can't say it is the best ramen, it is serviceable and definitely miles better than the plastic bag or styrofoam cup of noodles the college students might have stashed under their beds. Their sushi is close to the supermarket variety - but heck it isn't pricey for the college crowd. What's nice was the 5 little Korean appetizer dishes that they included before the noodles and sushi arrived. Where else can you get all this?? Along with a nice ambience (despite the dining furniture from different incarnations of this restaurant) and quick service on a snowy weekday afternoon, my belly was warm and full before I headed back on the road. read more

Came here for the first time last night. The portions are generous and everything I ordered was up to par with how I expected the dish to taste. I highly recommend the seafood pancake; its not your typical frozen packaged ones and there was a good amount of seafood in it! I also had the Soondubu with seafood. I would've preferred more seafood in the soup; it was mostly tofu. I would come here again to try their sushi menu. read more

Remarkably bad. Bento "box" lunch began with the traditional array of little nibbles: black beans, bean sprouts, cucumber etc. Black beans dry and hard. Sprouts smelled musty, texture flabby. Box platter arrives with usual iceberg salad, but this one drenched in awful, water dreading. Odd combo of things on platter: rice AND (weary) glass noodles? One bone - dry dumpling, just sitting there. Two slices off avocado roll. No sauce offered for these items, no soy on table. Spicy bulgoki okay, but suffering by association with the not - fresh stuff. Felt like dump- the - leftovers day. Small wonder thus place is nowhere near as popular as Yama, which it replaced at this location. Thank goodness we still have Yama in West Lebanon! Did I mention the blasting Christmas carols? Reliably good food, quickly prepared, for spur of the moment dinners or lunch. The Bento box with salmon is s great lunch dish. We always get a couple of special maki rolls and tricolor sashimi. Went there on the recommendation of LL Bean, after a kayaking trip. Had a great lunch-sushi was fresh, generous portions, hot wasabi and great selection. The resturant provides some "small apps" at no extra charge while waiting for your meal. My review is also based on the honesty and integrity of the management staff. I dropped my "fitbit" in the resturant and did not realize it till I got back to CT. I was able to "GPS" the time it stopped tracking. I called the manager and he said it was there. I asked if he could mail it to me and I would reimburse him for the postage. The next day he called me and told me it was only 3.12 to mail it and he took care of it and it was on its way. He then sent me an email of the reciept and tracking info. WOW!!! My fitbit arrived 3 days later. It is so refreshing that there are honest good people running businesses. Please consider eating there if you are in the area. Great honest, hard working folks with great food at reasonable prices! read more

We were looking for a local place for lunch that wasn't a chain and ended up getting parking right in front of Sushiya. We both love sushi so we decided to go there. We ordered 3 rolls and hands down the Hanover roll is amazing. I'm a huge fan of smoked salmon and the flavor of theirs in the roll is tremendous. Their dumplings were small but also delicious with a really good sauce (not your generic dumpling sauce). We also got the TNT (delicious) and the Super Dragon. I can't give the place 5 stars because of that last one. The Super Dragon was the most expensive roll on the menu and we decided to splurge on it. Just too much going on and nothing really came through on it. A tangle of flavors that didn't compliment each other. It is a long way from home as we were on vacation but we are planning to return to the area and eat here again when we do. Worth it just for the Hanover. read more

I went to Sushiya with my mother one weekday afternoon. We were seated quickly and brought some Japanese tea. I was amazed at how large the menu was, featuring literally hundreds of Japanese and Korean dishes. I ordered the sirloin bulgogi which came marinated with onions and carrots in a sweet broth, and a side order of kimchi. The kimchi was spicy, with the perfect pungent and fermented flavor. My mother ordered the spicy tofu and scallion pancakes. The tofu came with a scallion soy sauce on the side but it was hardly spicy. In fact, without the sauce over the tofu, the tofu was downright bland, with no flavor at all. The pancakes were great and much thicker than what I have had at other Asian restaurants. We both enjoyed the appetizers brought to the table, which included marinated bean sprouts, pickled spicy cucumbers, dried black beans, salted broccoli, and sweetened potatoes. Overall it was an enjoyable experience at Sushiya, and with such a vast menu, I will for sure be returning to try some of the other tasty dishes. read more

Ran in here after The Martian (great movie!) for a snack - it was 9pm, they close at 10pm. Maybe that's why we got a chilly reception? The food was just ok, nothing special - the prices are very Hanover. The head waitress (or possibly co-owner? Not sure - she's definitely a familiar face) was quite rude. Our waitress was nice, and most of the folks working there seemed happy, but she was unwelcoming - noticeably so. Offputting. Better choices are not far away. read more

TL;DR: really good for vegetarians if you stick to the Korean menu; have heard meh things about sushi and Japanese entrees Food: Pretty awesome Korean food. Highlights are the spicy seafood udon, jjamppong, meat bibimbaps, bulgogi, and seafood soondobu for non-vegetarians; replace things with tofu for vegetarians and it's equally good (bibimbap being the only exception - tofu bibimbap is very meh). Pa-Jun is an awesome appetizer. Vegetarian udon is tasteless and terrible. Their sushi rolls are just ok, but the vegetarian rolls are really bad. Everything is reasonably priced for the serving size, with most things under $15. Atmosphere: Casual and often loud, tough to have a conversation sometimes when it's crowded due to the open layout. Service often takes a while, but if you're nice to your waiter and come often, they tend to give regulars more snacks to start (i.e. a couple friends come a lot and get dumplings, shumai in addition to the sprouts and broccoli snacks that other people get) read more

I was a semi-regular when this was Yama. Most people felt the W. Lebanon branch of Yama had better food, and I mildly agreed, but the decor in W. Leb. is just too depressing to be spending so much money on a meal. So, I tended to hit the Hanover one 9 times out of 10. It was OK. Never bad, but never great. I think Sushi Ya is an improvement. The fish seems a little fresher, the sushi portions a hair bigger, and the presentation improved. I know they have much of the same staff as Yama had, but I think the new owners are expecting more out of them (and perhaps selecting the fish). I wouldn't put this in the class of sushi you can get in New York or San Francisco, but it's as good as what I've had in many other big cities. The sushi is pretty darn good, and will definitely hit the spot if you're having a craving. My only two criticisms are that the unagi isn't served toasted & warmed enough, and that I wish they would expand the sushi selection a bit to go outside the comfortable American staples. They rarely have uni (sea urchin), and when they do they only have a few orders. I would love to see them offer things like amaebi, toregai, and different varieties of uni. With Dartmouth in town, I'm sure the market for it is there. read more

My husband and I loved to go here for lunch on Saturdays often followed by a movie. We were disappointed when we saw a sign on the front door that read "lunch specials Monday-Friday only." So, no lunch specials on Saturday. Bummer. Probably will try a different restaurant next time we are in Hanover. The food is good. So that's a plus. Pretty sure this place is Korean owned. For Hanover, this place has some pretty decent sushi and from what I've tried of their Korean food, it's not bad. Rolls are hit or miss. You can't really expect amazing sushi fish quality in Hanover. The Super Dragon Maki is really huge and delicious. I also have tried another roll there, but to be honest, it wasn't very memorable at all. Ddeokbokki (spicy rice cakes) weren't that spicy (again, what do you expect from Hanover), but were pretty okay. Honestly it's your best bet for decent Asian food in this area. read more

This place is also known as Yama, there are two. I came here for my birthday and had a wonderful experience. We came toward the end of the night and the house welcomed us warmly. Our server was excellent and had a great disposition. I ordered some nigiri, my friends ordered some rolls, and another friend ordered bimbimbap with an accomodation that they were not opposed to. They treated us to a complimentary birthday roll, and complimentary ice cream for my birthday. The sushi was good and reasonably priced for the area. I think the service is what really made this place stand out, and the giant pots of hot sake. read more

Ramen tastes bad and is not worth the price. Lunch box was a good deal at 9.95 but not anymore.

Not sure what happened, but my mother and I went in for dinner. Sat down for 10 minutes before a server came to our table. It was not a busy night. Ordered dinner and asked for tea, and then proceeded to sit there for another 20 minutes while nothing came to our table and no one checked in. Asked the manager what happened, he calls the waiter over, and he says sorry and shrugs. Seems the restaurant was happy we left. Not sure how we offended them. read more
