Solo dining and sake tasting event
Chris P.

I have heard of this spot for several years, and I finally ordered takeout for dinner. I ordered the Salmon Yaki Udon to go. The dish was very freshly made, and it remained warm after my 90-minute commute home. The dish was a good portion for two people and tasty even for the toddler. A few days later, I had an impromptu omakase dinner 8 pieces of sushi plus a specialty roll for under $60 as I try to figure out how to get home since downtown express buses were canceling and rerouted thanks to the UN Summit. I enjoyed my meal plus the staff and Yelp offered free sake. I had the cocktail sake, hot sake made in-house, and the overflowing shot of Soto sake. The specialty rolls are definitely worth trying. I had the Orange Dragon Roll, which was very good. I also ordered the blue crab dumplings. It was ok but much needed after all the sake consumed. The next day, I ordered takeout for lunch, and I just had to get the SuteiShi Pearl Roll made with fried oysters, cucumber, Kani, and House spicy mayo. This roll hit the spot, and the oysters were perfectly fried. I'd definitely return to take more of their specialty rolls and maybe explore their happy hour, if available.

I had a lovely dinner and catch up with a dear friend at Suteishi today. It was our go to place when we both worked in the neighborhood and it had been a long while since we'd been there...but Victor and Renee still remembered us! The food was delicious...I had the Suteishi rainbow roll which was topped with chili crisps for an extra kick (yum!) and my friend had a California roll hold the avocado and hold the roe (lol). I also had the pomegranate margarita (pic attached) which was the perfect blend of sweet, sour, and spicy. It was a really nice day so they had the wall open which was perfect for indoor outdoor dining (I wanted outdoor and my friend wanted indoor). The servers were very attentive and just plain nice :)

I would give a 3.5 if I could, but rounding up since nothing was particularly bad about the meal. My partner and I stopped by as we were in the area and in the mood for sushi. We ordered shrimp shumai and 3 rolls, which were all good but a bit overpriced. The prices on their website are a little outdated, so when we got there, it was a bit pricier than we had anticipated.

One of my favorite sushi restaurants, hands down. As a self proclaimed sushi snob, I've frequented SUteiShi about a dozen times and have never had a bad experience. I wouldn't necessarily say I have a favorite, but will note the consistency of very fresh fish, speciality items and overall ingredients being top notch. I've fallen in love with the avocado Kani salad and this has become mandatory for any visit. Don't let the price point or size of the portions derail you from this amazing sushi experience.

We stopped here after we sat down for a few drinks at pier 17 and we were craving sushi. It was a perfect summer evening for outdoor seating. Tip: remember to check in on Yelp and claim your free hot sake. We ordered the orange Dragon speciality roll and two regular rolls. The sushi was fresh and well put together. I'd definitely go back. The pricing is fairly decent too.

Highlights: service and ambiance Lowlights: the food Located on a very cute stone street near the south street seaport, SUteishi brings a trendy flare to basic Japanese cuisine. And while we weren't impressed, we did appreciate the kind service & fun location. This is my 3rd time coming here and I will say that they are consistent! The quality has not dwindled and things seem to improve each time I dine in. However, the food never leaves a memorable mark on me. It's good! Not great. Definitely not bad. The chicken teriyaki was a great portion size with white breast meat. Not my favorite, but the presentation was very nice. Rice bowl was little dry unfortunately. Edamame and fried oysters got the job done. The sashimi platter was eye catching and super fun. The fish was fresh - not the best ever though. It didn't melt in my mouth like I hoped it would. I found myself chewing a lot and pulling apart stringy pieces at times. The sushi rolls were also good but not great. Everything was prepared so well, but we just weren't into it. SUteishi will fix your Japanese food craving & it's a great date/meetup spot. However, the food was nothing to write home about.

4th of July special roll

We happened to be in FiDi for 4th of July and ended up here. So glad we did!! We sat outside which was nice. First we ordered the Handmade Blue Crab Gyoza which was really delicious and filling! Then we got the special roll they had for 4th of July and omg it was probably the best roll we've ever had! The waiter sold us on it so we got it. It had avocado, white tuna and crunchy tuna on top. It wasn't overly crunchy but the perfect amount. We recommended that it should be on the permanent menu it was that good. Then we got the wavecrest: spicy yellowtail, cucumber, jalapeños on top. This was also good but not as good as the special. Both rolls were some of the best rolls we've had which was surprising to us. We definitely want to come back and try their other popular rolls!

First time trying this place and I just didn't fall in love with it like some other Yelp reviewers. Overpriced Japanese that describes itself as fine dining and granted--the fish was fresh but I definitely had better rolls elsewhere. It was a somewhat mild evening and the outdoor space was pretty nice. Actually all windows were open for the interior dining area as well. Red was their theme in terms of decor. Quite nice. The menu was diverse and there were some Asian small plates/tapas style dishes to choose from--for example tuna raviolis. In viewing the menu, I wasn't sure if the fusion aspect of these creations worked well. FYI: They don't have a full liquor license which meant wine, beer or sake. There were a couple Saketini cocktails on the menu. I decided to go with a pretty good Reisling and later switched to a hot sake. In terms of food, my friend and I both chose a standard roll and a special or Belly-Licious roll. I selected the Spider/Shrimp Tempura ($9) for my standard roll and the Samurai for the special roll. The latter included spicy blue crab, cucumber, crunch, red snapper, and avocado on top ($19). Honestly, I didn't taste much of the blue crab. The presentation of the rolls on the plate was appealing and service was attentive. And although the seafood was fresh, I didn't feel wowed with the flavors especially at $71 for my share.

It's absolutely amazing. Best sushi I've ever had. Never had sashimi before. It wasn't bad. A bit interesting.

The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. The entrees provide a substantial amount of food, and I especially appreciate that they allow you to choose which roll comes with your meal.

The only one I know of is hefty but also $200 each lol, making Sanyuu's $69 omakase and $78 Everything don, not to mention the $30 giant salmon nigiri set, A STEAL! I enjoyed most of the pieces but I will say I don't like their amaebi or uni at all. I'm not sure what kind of uni is used here but it's the type with a very strong mineral flavor & aftertaste that I don't find enjoyable. The slices aren't thin, delicate, and melt-in-your-mouth as one usually gets in a sit down; they are extra thick, and I had to really bite down on some of the pieces. The rice was nicely seasoned and was cooked well + portions are also big to match those thiccccc salmon slices. To be honest, I was getting a little nauseated after 5 pieces, haha~ They were definitely delicious but I'd probably just eat 3 or 4 pieces and share with a friend! It was easy to text the number on the website and coordinate a pickup time, and the staff was friendly when I arrived. The restaurant is a little hard to find as the windows are blinded and the sign is a piece of paper on the door.
