We had the pleasure of being at the very first Easter Brunch at Joe Robinson's SUTTER'S MILL, and it was very well done. Novel concept too: it was all you could eat, but from their brunch menu. Each table had two waitstaff assigned and we got excellent, polite, and friendly service. My wife wanted eggs Benedict, and they had not one but three different options: traditional, with salmon, and with a filet in lieu of the Canadian ham. I had the Filet Oscar, which was a delicious tender piece of beef with wonderful crab Hollandaise, and my wife enjoyed her filet Benedict. They tried petit fours for dessert, which were perfectly sized and sweet. They also had a nice appetizer of lobster stuffed mushrooms, a fruit platter, and bagels with full choices of creamed cheese, onions, lox, and tomatoes. No disappointments. As Diana C says, the place has heart, and the food/service is very very good. It's not inexpensive, but worth it. And in a world that often lacks value, Sutter's Mill delivers as I've heard it does in Mission Hills that the father runs. read more

It's a love hate relationship. I have been there maybe 7-8 times. On most occasions the food has been great. On two occasions though both on NYE they had ran out of most of their sides and they served us cold food. On my second NYE trip I ordered my favorite super thick and juicy hamburger that I always get but this time it was about as thick as a burger from McDonald's and quite dry. I actually felt embarrassed bragging about this place to friends and then when they tried it that night the service was mediocre and the food was subpar. I will give them another try but never ever on a holiday. read more

Had Thanksgiving dinner with my family. Other than a friendly waitress, I was not pleased with our experience. Made reservation weeks before for 10 people, told we would need to be seated @ 2 tables next to each other, but call back closer to date to check on cancellation for possibility of one table. Called restaurant couple of days before to notify reservation change to 8 people, would still be seated @ 2 tables. After arrival, sat @ booths for my reservation without enough table settings until I requested them after salads brought to table. Food was mediocre (crunchy onions in onion soup, undercooked potatoes with turkey dinner). Unused table of four that could have accommodated my entire party together was empty the entire time we were there (leaving other booth for that reservation) just as a 4 top table was added to booth next to mine in the same room. Called a few days later to speak to manager about our experience (before writing this review). She gave a lot of excuses, did not seem to care that it was not a good holiday experience at her restaurant. For some reason, she felt the need to point out to me that she was talking to me even before the restaurant opened for the day. Would not recommend this restaurant. read more

I REALLY want to love this place, but it's proving difficult... I've been to Sutter's Mill a few times with my best friend who lives nearby. Each occasion could have been better... The staff is very friendly, up front, and fun... but I think even they know the product is lacking.. On one occasion, I asked how the green beans were prepared and our server said "out of the can, microwaved"... ouch...! In particular, pricing did not reflect what was received...This establishment does some things extraordinarily well, and falls absolutely flat on others... I'm a big believer in supporting local business, so I'll come back...But there are many eateries who have these basic things dialed in, so I really hope Sutter's Mill will rise up to the challenge :) read more

I ordered the house cut of the Prime Rib. The meat was very tender with good flavor, but not hot or even warm. The soup was very good. The waitress was inattentive I had to ask the bus-person several times to get the waitress. If I judged the restaurant just on the food I would give it 5 stars. I don't understand restaurants that work waitresses in several different rooms; the service is always bad. I wonder how long my Prime Rib sat under the lights waiting to be delivered. I had dinner there for the first time the other night with my wife. The decor was exceptionally nice and elegant, food and service was good, but the food was somewhat overpriced, especially the Prime Rib (an 8 oz. cut for $32!!!!!!). I found it quite shocking that Top Sirloin was on the menu and WAAAY over priced for the low quality cut of meat that it is. who else actually serves Top Sirloin except maybe Denny's or IHOP? We enjoyed ourselves, though, so maybe we'll be back. in the meantime, the owners might want to lower their prices and get rid of the Top Sirloin! I actually thought there might be a camera over our table because her service was so quick. We needed a reasonable restaurant in Simi to take eight high school friends. The "Rockers", as we call ourselves, came from Valencia, La Crescenta, Phelan, Glendale and Big Bear to celebrate being friends for 40-plus years. They were so impressed with the "dinner-house" decor, the great service, and the steaks, Knowing the management has a no-corkage fee, we all chose a bottle from my collection and brought it to the eatery. The waiter was so accommodating and saw that the wine did flow--he joined in the festive spirit and everyone had a grand evening. this restaurant had horrible service, first and only time I set foot in this place to eat, I went during the evening, let me start off by saying, the greeting at the door was rude, not friendly at all. The waitress we had, very cold didn't give us a welcome feeling. We had to wait from our food for over an hour and it took the waitress a long time to even bring us drinks. There was too much standing around from them instead of checking up on us to see how we were doing. I would love to say that maybe we just got a bad waitress but the same attitude was showing in the rest of them and there was even arguing between them having vulgar things being said out in front of the customers. Not impressed with the overly priced food menu and mediocre decor. We sat in their newly expanded dining area and I felt like I was in a fake dining room staged for a show. It was not a cozy or intimate dining experience, and dinner service was super slow. Our waitress was very nice though, and kept our glasses full. Like others have said, the salad is a poor excuse for salad and consisted of just iceberg lettuce and a few pieces of tomatoes, nothing else. I ordered the pioneer prime rib and it was very bland, the stuffed potato was bland, my children's sutter fries were bland. Everything was bland, bland, bland. My husband had the ribeye, which was good, after a little salt, my daughter had the miner's prime rib sandwich, which she thoroughly enjoyed, and my son had the Wally burger, which was stuffed with a good amount of cheese. Drove out to Simi from the valley to eat here because of the excellent reputation and memories of Sutters in the valley. The server was sweet and attentive. The order was slow, no clam in the clam chowder, the baked potato was very dry and required more sour cream to get it down. Now, the prime rib.... we both ordered it, one was amazing, melted like butter. The other was tough, hard to cut and hard to chew. Sent back the awful one, only to get a 50% cut on the bill (they should have removed the whole thing,$40 for a meal uneaten) and a piece of cheesecake as an apology. One of us left without eating dinner. Overall, I would definitely not drive out of my way to go there again. I can eat just as well or better, for the same or less, right here in the valley. Also the meal does not include any bread, thought that was kind of odd. For the prices at this place you would think it would be top notch. Sorry Sutters, we're not coming back. read more

We went to Sutter's Mill to be treated by my parents. We hadn't been there in a couple years, so we thought it would be nice to go there again. We were surprised by how much the prices had gone up. Like 75% since our last visit. I felt bad for having suggested it. We ended up splitting our meals because it was almost $30 for a sirloin steak, plain baked potato and salad or soup. The salad was lettuce and tomato only... As a side dish they charge $7.50 for this, or the soup was $7.50 for a small, half filled bowl. The steak was excellent. But not worth $30. It was a Wednesday night, and they weren't very busy. But they sat another foursome RIGHT NEXT TO US. They were drinking and very loud. I'm all for having fun, but when you only have 3 groups of customers, you can spread them out. We could not hear most of our conversation. It was a big disappointment. My husband and I went to Sutters Mill for the first time for my birthday, We had a wonderful time, the food was fantastic, the atmosphere welcoming and the service excellent. So for our daughter's 29 birthday, we wanted something special, we took her and her partner to Sutters Mill. The atmosphere was the same but that was the only thing. Our waitress was less than friendly, she didn't introduce herself, just asked what we wanted to drink, she brought the ice tea and ask what we wanted, my daughter and I asked for an appetizer, a shrimp cocktail, I went for oyster on a half shell, she left and came back, told me they could not serve the oysters, so I ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms, about 2 min later she asked what we wanted to eat, I asked if she would hold off our order till the appetizer were finished, she said yes, we had just started to get into the appetizers which were not very good at all, "the shrimp looked like one shrimp cut into four strips and ran over by a car, my mushrooms were watery and very chewy" when our waitress shows up and starts putting salad on the table without giving us a chance to make room, the dressing that was so good on my birthday, was just OK at best, before were done with the salad out comes our waitress with our main course, again without waiting she starts to put stuff down as my prime rib starts to tip my husband grabs the plate, she said nothing. We ordered two prime ribs and two of their signature steaks, both steaks were tough and without flavor, the sauce looked and tasted like it had been sitting around for a few days. Our prime rib was good, but the twice baked potato we both had, was dry and the top way over done. We ordered a side of garlic bed, which was as hard as a rock. The waitress did bring my daughter a piece of cheese cake and a piece of chocolate cake, for her birthday, that was nice but that is about the only bright spot for the evening at Sutters Mill. I am sure it will be our last visit to Sutters Mill, for the price, its not worth a hit or miss meal, should be spot on every time and a waitress who makes you feel welcome would also be appreciated. read more

What a phenomenal find! I can't believe it's taken me this long to discover Sutter's Mill, but you can bet I won't forget it in the future! The customer service was great (thanks Jana!), and the owners, Sally & Joe, made sure to introduce themselves to me and take care of what I needed. I had the rib-eye steak, and it was juicy and cooked to perfection. I was lucky enough to go on a night when they were offering free wine tasting (a delicious surprise!), and I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. This is definitely a place that the locals are fond of, and I see why, with good reason. Kids 8 and under eat free, so I'll be sure to bring the family next time. The decor is cute, there were plenty of servers to take care of the guests, and it was a great choice for a friday night steak, in a casual environment. Yelp users who check-in get a 20% of coupon (for a dinner entree) before 5:30 p.m. The prices are about average, for what you get, and I can assure you that you will not leave hungry. We really wanted to like this restaurant. We have been looking for a good steak house close to home. We were seated right away and ahead of several couples who were waiting. We had made a reservation on the internet and it really helped. Our waitress was cheerful and prompt. We ordered coffee before dinner and we had to ask for it to be heated up because it was luke warm. The waitress made a new pot and the coffee was hot this time. ( Good thing because we never got a refill on coffee or water) I ordered a 10oz prime rib with Sutter's fries, my better half ordered fried chicken with stuffed potato. I had a salad with blue cheese and honey had clam chowder. The salad was good and the clam chowder was very good. Also the garlic bread was pretty good. When our main dish arrived I noted that the 10oz prime looked like it had shrunk to maybe a 8oz piece of meat. The meat was luke warm and so was the au jus. The fries were not done and were greasy. The chicken was a joke. The four pieces included a wing tip that was batter only and no meat, the second piece was a drumette with very little meat and then there was 2 very small breasts. Bottom line, more batter then meat. The chicken also tasted like it had been fried in the same grease that had been used to fry fish. Neither one of us finished our meal, all in all the food was tasteless and disappointing. We will not be returning. read more

Good service, good steaks. Love the stuffed potatoes (they are smaller than they used to be) and the blue cheese dressing (the salad only consists of lettuce and two cherry tomatoes). They don't have shrimp scampi on the menu anymore and it used to be so good. I was able to order it but it no longer comes with mushrooms in the sauce. It was much better before. It came with 5 shrimp with some butter sauce and a few capers but it was arrived luke warm and I opted out of the pasta that it now comes with. Husband ordered the large rib eye steak and it was good with the Bearnaise sauce. The owner came out and gave us a card for our anniversary and we got a free dessert. Prices have gone up though and the shrimp dish wasn't worth the $33 they charged for it. Glad we went early and took advantage of the Early Bird discount of 20%. In order to get the discount though you have to mention it otherwise you won't get it. read more

i have been a regular at this restaurant for some time. my husband and i go usually once a month, and the service and food is always wonderful. we're very consistent with what we order and Gabby, our usual server, remembers it each time and knows exactly what we like. The reason i'm giving this restaurant three stars though is because when we went this weekend we were unable to get our normal choices without a large price increase. The menu changed unbeknownst to the servers it seemed, and now the only sides available without having to pay more money are potatoes. I don't want a potato with my meal, so i have to pay $3 for veggies? And I had to pay extra for sauce with my steak that was previously complimentary. Our steak prices were also increased and the menu didn't make sense when it came to the prime rib pricing. I know it seems like a small issue but we are by no means rich and going to Sutter's is the splurge we're able to do for ourselves once or twice a month. If my bill is going to be over $20 more when we're ordering the same thing, that's an issue. The food is always amazing, but If i have to be told what i'm going to eat, then i'm not going to come here anymore. My husband and I are already contemplating changing our valentines reservation to another place. read more
