Incredibly rude staff/ owners. I was meeting up with a local friend as I was in town for the weekend, and really looking forward to trying this cafe. My party of 4 adults and a baby didn't fit at any of the smaller cafe tables and there are just two somewhat larger tables. So we waited for about 20 min while a group was finishing up their meal, and when they left sat down. (Meanwhile, we had stood by the door and let others know we weren't ordering yet so they could go first.) we get settled and then go to stand in line to order and are told we can't "save" a table. I explained that we were in line to order and would be using the table right then, but the staff member insisted that it was unfair to others who ordered first not to be able to take whichever table they liked. They offered to put us on a waiting list once we had ordered if there were no tables available. Now, to be fair most of their patrons were in groups of two or single people having a quick coffee, so I'm sure the seating policy works for most. But it wasn't going to be logistically sensible for my group. Would we wait around for an open table with our food and drinks in hand while a group of two took a larger table? Another staff member then came outside and was brusque and dismissive. So we chose to leave rather than stay somewhere we were clearly unwelcome. I wish we would have been able to try the food and this review would be more helpful on that front. Oh well! It costs nothing to be kind, and they could have delivered the news with a great deal more hospitality. read more

Hands-down, the best French toast I've ever had in my life. The service was excellent. Five star top-notch.

Reasonably priced and tasty food but super super busy and not enough indoor or outdoor seating. It feels cramped and claustrophobic inside but some might find this exciting and endearing. It's hard to wait in line even because people (servers and other diners) are trying to get by and there's just not enough room. My meal consisted of a grapefruit juice (freshly squeezed--pleasingly tart, sweet as far as grapefruits go) and corn cakes (pancakes made of corn instead of flour) with sunny-side-up eggs on top. A little container of maple syrup was also provided and was abundant for the number of corn cakes. The eggs were fresh, cooked properly and evenly, and tasted good. Blanched collar greens were included on the side, which no offense to collard greens, but they were nas-tay. Certainly an acquired taste! The ambiance is so-so. There is an interesting indoor pergola with plants draped and growing enveloping it but not much else in terms of visual appeal. read more

Sweedeedee seemed like a far away recommendation, but it turned out to be well worth the trek. The far out winner is definitely the honey cake. So delicious that it makes my head (and heart) spin. Also had the corn cake - really good, but I'm not into pancakes generally, so I wasn't overwhelmed. And the breakfast burrito, which was awesome. There is no doubt that this is one of the top places for breakfast in Portland. The quality of their breakfast is absolutely tremendous. We arrived early on Saturday morning and were promptly seated. We chose to sit outside on their patio because they have very nice outdoor seating with very effective heated lamps at each table. It is a covered outdoor patio as well so we had no issues sitting there while it rained. Our server was sincerely friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the Breakfast Sandwich and the French Toast. The French Toast was one of the best I've tried. The bread, taste and texture was amazing. I especially liked the cinnamon and brown sugar flavors. It is definitely a filling dish as they provide very large portions. The breakfast sandwich was also very tasty. It was unique too as it didn't taste like your average breakfast sandwich. It tasted much better than your average breakfast sandwich. You can add bacon or ham to it. I chose to add ham and it was very high quality ham. The scrambled eggs were also made perfectly. They use a sort of pickled mayo which gave it a very distinct flavor. The fresh cantal cheese also added wonderful flavor to this perfectly made breakfast sandwich. We also ordered a side of bacon and I have to say it was a very generous portion of bacon. They really gave us an great amount of bacon just for ordering it as a side. The bacon itself was so mouthwatering. It was thick cuts of bacon made with the perfect crisp. I really loved this cozy breakfast place and highly recommend it! read more

I'm from out of town but I read good reviews on this place and I think it was mentioned in an article. I decided to try it while on a solo trip Portland. The set up is weird, you have to order your food first and then wait for a seat. There's a couple behind me and they follow me to order. We all wait. I watch the people ahead of me get seated pretty quickly so I figure I'll be seated soon too. Nope. The couple behind me gets seated first. I thought it was weird but figured it was because I was alone and maybe they were waiting for a smaller table for me. Then I watch more people BEHIND me get seated. Keep in mind I've already ORDERED and PAID for my food. I'm finally at a table some 20-30 minutes later and by this time, the couple that was behind me is getting ready to leave. The guy says "are you seriously just NOW being seated?!" I nodded. He said, "Wow, that's not cool." The girl he's with walks up and apologizes to me too. It's not their fault. But I know we're all thinking the same thing and I'm not just imagining that I'm being treated unfairly. I think it's also worth mentioning that at the time, I was the ONLY person of color here. The food was just OK. I had a turkey sandwich. The portion size was decent. Brunch here. Do it. Everything is fresh, clean, and delicious at Sweedeedee. The limited menu speaks to the quality of ingredients and farm to table availability that comes with maintaining a seasonal menu. Wait too long? Grab a piece of olive oil or poppyseed plum cake and poke around Mississippi Records for a little bit. Fast is not necessarily their specialty- it really depends on the flow of traffic when you arrive- but it's one of the absolute best brunches in Portland if you're into simple, quality food. We used to love Sweedeedee! But with the pandemic we haven't made it over recently. Today we finally had the time to drive to Alberta and were prepared to handle the usual long line to order. For the cornmeal pancakes the wait is worth it! We were pleasantly by the absent lines and now there is table service! So fancy! But the menu has not only changed; the pancakes are completely gone. And prices went through the roof. $15 for eggs? Seriously? Actually nothing seemed that appetizing on the menu compared to what we were expecting so we ordered pastries from the MUCH smaller selection than they used to have. The pastries were meh. I miss the old place; at least we don't have to drive up here and brave long lines anymore--those are gone, along with the quality and value (sigh). read more

Came here hoping to score some pancakes, but no pancakes on the menu today. Instead I ended up with the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had. Breakfast sandwiches tend to be like little bricks. Here I had gently soft moist eggs with cheese, some zingy mayo, and yes, I did pay extra for the bacon- all on a pillow soft roll. My daughter ordered french toast, which came drenched in butter, cinnamon, blueberries, and brown sugar. Definitely a wake you up and go back to bed kind of breakfast, but I was doing the driving. She left only a few crumbs of sugar on the plate. My wife opted for a simple but fresh strawberry shortcake, and there was nothing left of that at the end. Weekend waits can get long since the place is tiny, but it is definitely worth it. Order at the counter first, then the staff will put you on the list for a table. You can truly tell that they use the freshest ingredients here. I never had it before, but the local hot sauce they provide is SPICY. The breakfast burrito is fresh, and grilled to keep it from falling apart. They also don't skimp on the avocado! The Sweedeedee breakfast plate was just okay though, the salad dressing didn't appeal to me and the bacon and eggs were just standard. There are better things to order on their menu, such as their famous corn cakes! The salted honey pie is so memorable, it's a must order. I could both start and end my meal with a slice of that pie. We eat here on a regular basis, and this is perhaps our favorite restaurant and all of Portland for breakfast and brunch. It's small, cozy, and everything is handmade and served with incredible attention to detail and quality. Be sure not to miss the homemade pies and baked items. This is a cute little neighborhood spot, but it isn't worth traveling to (which is why I went there). I was told it was the best brunch in Portland. Let me clearly state that this is not the best brunch in Portland, and not even in the top 20. The food is good, but the portions are on the small side, and nothing on the menu is unique or outstanding. This place is beautiful and has great farm to table food. I've never had anything bad here only experienced coming when they had run out of food . Most recently I came here for dinner and enjoyed the carrot salad, the cheese plate and the Parmesan toast. Everything was perfectly prepared and had such a nice balance of freshness. I will say that the pie in the case caught my eye as looking simply amazing.. might go back for some. Unfortunately, firstly, we had poor service- the servers were cold and, when my friend handed the empty, clean coffee cup back saying that she didn't order coffee, the server said, "oh, yes you did. You ordered a cup. But thats fine ill get you your 2 dollars back." Pretty unnecessary commentary, especially in way of customer service! So.. the food- the menu is inventive and a lot of the dishes seem really flavorful, like my friend's savory porridge was seasoned with a Dukkah blend, yum. I was really excited for my breakfast bowl, which was rice, eggs, and veggies and seemed healthy and hearty. The only thing is... and I love spicy, but it was TOO spicy! Its topped with chiles, or like this fermented chile paste but honestly, a disproportionate amount IMO. I eagerly mixed it into the dish and then the dish became inedible /: Not to be a baby, I just think most people would find it too spicy. Maybe they put an extra thick glob of the stuff on mine.. oh well! I live super close to Sweedeedee so could see coming back for the self serve coffee and bomb looking pie. Extremely disappointed. Did not stick around to eat so my 1 star is based on my customer service experience. My son and I had been looking forward to coming here for over a week at the suggestion of his air bnb host. We walked in and there was 5 people (2 couples and a solo person) ahead of us. We grabbed the menus and decided what we wanted and since seating is limited my son grabbed a spot and I stood in line to order. 15 minutes later (I kid you not), the line was down to 2 people in front of me. I was getting excited!!! Well...after listening to the cashier have personal conversations with the 2 gals in front of me and showing each others their nails....7 more minutes go by, the cashier even makes eye contact with me and continues their personal chit chat. I'm not impressed at this point and one of the girls hadn't even gave her order yet. I grabbed my son and we left. I was appalled! Happy and bright in all ways, offering novel and healthy choices. The wait for our food was long, as they were rather slammed (2pm on a Saturday). The food was worth the wait, though a tad bland at points. We both had soup and salad, just barely avoiding the line-up of gorgeously evil pastries calling to us. The soup was a variety of greens and daikon slices with bits of chicken and just radiates healthy vibes, though it was quite bland. The salad was beautiful and quite tasty. Let me preface this by saying I hate salads. They're unimpressive and, for something so easy to make, the only reason anyone should ever buy one is if they're on a diet, or if they're a boring idiot. Now for some reason, I ordered the seasonal salad today. There was a bit of a wait when we dropped by last week but not too long because it was pretty late in the morning. The coffee was really good, and the breakfast burrito I had was not bad. It could have used a bit more seasoning. My colleague who was with me really enjoyed what looked like a porridge with mix-ins. I didn't ask, but she didn't have any leftovers when we were done. The only complaints we both have involve the staff. They seemed irritated and snotty. The young woman who took our order was not the least bit friendly, and despite my best efforts to be as polite to her as possible, she wasn't having it. She didn't want to be there, and she acted as if she didn't want us there either. The young woman who brought our food was also standoffish and seemed annoyed. She never spoke. The vibe from the other customers around was a nice one, but the one the employees were giving off was that of wishing the place was void of customers. The coffee is really good. The smoke salmon dish needed more of the horseradish sour cream and olives and maybe salt. It was little bland. The grilled cheese was way too fancy for our 11 yr old, but Dad liked it. The breakfast burrito was also reportedly good according to our teenager. Also, I'm gluten free and got "glutened" from the smoke salmon dish without toast. So, if you're sensitive I'd avoid this restaurant - maybe the small kitchen makes it hard to prevent cross contamination. read more

Second visit to this restaurant. First time was ok.. Today's experience was super slow. I order food and waited to be seated about 10min. Another 10min after being seated a couple walked in and ordered their food. 40min later their food came out. I then spoke to the staff about the tardiness of my order and she proceeded to tell me that the couple ordered before us‍#NotTrue. My wife then went up to speak with more staff then our order came out 5min later. One plate was cold so we had to send it back. Didn't get any sort of apology or acknowledgement that they messed up. We were visiting Portland and this place was recommended to us, so we decided, why not?! The food was really delicious - the berry cornbread muffin was soooo good! I ordered the burrito and my friend got the trout plate. This place is great if you have time to kill. It's small, so we waited a while for a seat and then waited a while for the food. But we weren't in any rush and had great time chatting, so it didn't bother us. I think you need about an hour or more if you want to check this place out! read more

This is a review by a vegetarian. The food is decent but I don't get the popularity of Sweedeedee. It's not fast, it's not cheap, it's not comfortable, it's not relaxing, the portions aren't ginormous. Baked goods are really the star. I've also had the breakfast porrisge ,which is fancified $9 oatmeal, and corn cakes, which are average. Basically, if there is any kind of a line, spare yourself the drama. If there is no one in line and are open tables then get yourself some pie. read more

I've only been here once, about a year ago, and I have been looking for a way to drag someone back here with me but we always end up trying something else. I had a seasonal veggie sandwich that was honestly so delicious. I remember it had this really good bread, I think it was focaccia. On the inside it was loaded with veggies like carrots and arugula and also had a fried egg. It was SO good, I still think about it. The place itself has a cute atmosphere. It is pretty tiny and seating was a little bit of an issue like many popular places in Portland. They do help you find a seat and alert you when one opens up so it's not horribly stressful. With a name like Sweedeedee, I expected unbridled preciousness. What I got instead was a fantastic meal made with fresh ingredients, house-baked bread, and an insane amount of flavor. In a kind of precious atmosphere. Sweedeedee has been on my radar for months, and while my radar screen does reach all the way to NoPo, I'm not in that hood for meals all that often. But the time finally came. I came, I saw, I ate. And it was good. This place is tiny and counter-service, with minimal seating options. I can imagine it would be insanely packed on any given weekend or late-week morning. In fact, it was busy at 1pm on a Tuesday, but not so busy that I wasn't in and out in less than an hour. Protip - show up during off hours. The menu is short and sweet, focusing on a mix of fresh local greens, house-baked bread, eggs, sandwiches (made with all of the latter), soups and salads. My meal was the cobb salad, and I almost immediately regretted it after ordering, as I witnessed plate after plate stacked high with delicious-looking bread, fantastic sturdy greens, tasty eggs and the like roll out of the kitchen. However my meal was anything but regrettable. A stack of rich greens, two giant strips of bacon, blue cheese crumbles, pulled chilled chicken, a six-minute egg, tangy vinaigrette and two slices of thick delicious wheat toast. It wasn't over-burdened with a ton of creamy thick rich dressing, the meat and eggs and blue cheese did most of the talking, and my tastebuds listened with rapt attention and awe. The food here is not cheap (some of the sandwiches push into the $12 range) but the ingredients are so fresh, and the bread is so good, and the service is plenty friendly, so I'll abide. I can see how this setup would turn into a shit show on a super busy brunch weekend, but from my off-hours vantage point, everything clicks. Especially the food. So awesome. read more
