Sweet Basil Cafe' is now open in Hanover Park, and it is a fabulous place to dine. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, clean, and bright inside. They have a great variety of menu items for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and pizza, too. I want to return and try a breakfast pizza. The iced latte is a treat, and the BLT sandwich was tasty and filling. I ordered mine with a side of fruit. I did get to try a sample of the thin, crispy crust cheese pizza, and it was very cheesy and tasty. I love a thin crispy crust like theirs. Check out the pet-friendly patio, too. The restaurant was pretty empty... five tables dining when we walked in. The restaurant has definitely been highly upgraded since the last restaurant was here! Love the decor and all the beautiful tables and booths. Our waitress was really sweet and took great care of us. There are daily specials on the back page of the menu. Today was the chicken fried steak dinner with a choice of potato, broccoli, and a soup or dinner salad. You also get free ice cream or rice pudding. I picked the loaded baked potato, salad with blue cheese dressing, and the rice pudding. My husband ordered the corned beef hash with 2 eggs. It came with hashed browns, and he chose pancakes for his side... wow they were huge like a vinyl record... and most importantly very tasty! We were excited to try Sweet Basil Café--it's adorable inside, like brunch was about to be a whole experience. We ordered a scrambler, an omelet (about $18 each), and some "fresh-squeezed" orange juice... which somehow tasted exactly like the kind that comes in a plastic bottle from aisle 6. The waitress who was waiting on our table looked like she wanted to be anywhere but taking our order, which didn't exactly inspire confidence. Then came the food. It looked rough, and after two bites each, our stomachs said, "Absolutely not." Everything was so greasy it could've slid off the plate on its own. To make matters worse, we both found hairs on our plates, and the utensils didn't seem very clean. At checkout, we said the food was "okay" (because we're Midwestern & polite), and she didn't even blink when offering us banana bread. We have been to other Sweet Basil Cafes before and they were very good. But this one was new and VERY CLOSE to us! So we were excited to try it tonight. They have normal new restaurant growing pains. But overall, it was excellent. Started with reuben egg rolls. Open face hot beef sandwich, chicken pecan dijon salad, hot turkey dinner, kids burger and kraft mac and cheese. Everything was good or great. I ordered a specialty from Springfield IL called a horseshoe. I am from there and am partial, but I recommend it. I enjoy ones with hamburger but this one had buffalo chicken. It was so huge I couldn't eat it all, but luckily my 11 year old daughter helped me and she loved it as much as I did. We had a couple hiccups with our order so the manager sent over a complimentary banana bread foster which has to be in my top 5 desserts all time. Deep fried banana bread with fresh bananas, pecans, ice cream, whipped cream amd caramel, it was to die for. Service was good and will get better as they get their feet under them. Told the young man waiter about it, and he made a new pot. Next was the soup as part of my meal, I had the baked potato which was very good....BUT lukewarm.....soup should be hot! We came here on Friday night for dinner. There were quite a few people in the restaurant so was a good sign! My husband had a 12 inch pizza which was a little crispy but he loved. My daughter had the strawberry stuffed French toast, which she really enjoyed. I had the chicken Parmesan that was much to be desired. I would've sent it back to the kitchen, but just asking about the chicken before ordering put me off to say anything about my meal. The chicken Parmesan was very thin and it felt like it was fried twice; It was very dry. You could only really eat the center of it and I didn't really care for the pasta sauce, it taste burned like I got the bottom of the pot . I will definitely not be returning again. Also, since I didn't eat hardly any of my meal, the waitress brought over a box which I felt obligated to take my leftovers home in. Sweet Basil Cafe Saturday afternoon about 3:45, One large group at the back of the restaurant otherwise beside myself and one other couple the diner is dead. There are at least 7 waitstaff, I've sat myself at the bar ordered a cappuccino, ribeye steak and eggs w/hashbrowns, and French toast bananas foster style with their "homemade" banana bread. Let's just say after everything was said and done it was not worth it. One of the line cooks was eating while on the line, the syrup bottle I was furnished had dog hair on it. The food was bland and unseasoned. The ribeye was cooked to order, if a little undercooked leaving the inside a bit purple rather than red and again unseasoned. If I'm paying for a steak that I know will cost $25 I had better get a good steak. The hashbrowns were the worst I've had in a long while. I'm guessing that they cooked while they still had a lot of water in them and the length of time to cook them turned the crispy texture to plastic. It was a horrible mixed hash. The waitress was "slammed" with two tables. The banana bread French toast was also bland and dense. The pieces being one inch thick cuts which would have been nice if it was flavorful. The bananas that were sliced on top were green and the pecans were coated in a cinnamon sugar mix. This would have been nice if they were glazed which they were not. So the bite of the French toast was a mix of a nice pecan crunch mixed with a harsh sugar crunch reminiscent of rock candy. The syrup was bottled and warm, but ever so slightly covered in dog hair. A quick glance around the diner and it's evident that there are a plethora of cheap knockoff brands for the ingredients down to the dollar store silverware. The only upside was the Cholula hot sauce to season my plastic hash browns, eggs, and steak. Of all the items I received the cappuccino was passable for a good coffee. There are tv screens around the bar that advertise the menu and local establishments nothing else while I was there, this was yet again another missed opportunity to wow your guests and it falls flat. At least put up your coffee menu! The appearance is clean yet while I waited for the waitress to return a fly decided to venture near my plate, it's December! Upon leaving the establishment the manager asked how everything was and I said not so good. Trying to be as discreet as possible I explained the situation, because she asked. In the middle of my explaining she phoned the owner and then put them on speaker phone. So now I'm retelling everything again for the person on the phone and when I get to the bottle having dog hair that's when I'm interrupted again with excuses. The manager excuses herself again. She comes back to me and says why didn't I say something so she could have them cook it again. To which I responded why would I want you to remake your bland food. That's when the conversation went south first with her pleading for me to give her and her crew another shot with free food to boot no less. That I responded to in kind with, "Why would I want your free bland food?!" I told her I'm not interested you have a problem and you need to fix it. She says I'm trying to work with you and you don't want me to fix it. Then she goes on about how her and her husband were restaurant owners. Now he's dead it's hard work... blah, blah, excuses. I told her I don't care if he's dead and none of that matters. Which is the problem here and why I'm writing this review. There's a problem and it starts with the top of the chain on down. That woman became emotionally unhinged in a situation where I was looking for her to do her job, not bribe me with free food! When I told her I would absolutely not take her free food and write my review she went off! Told me to go ahead and write my review and destroy the restaurant. That's absolutely ludicrous that you would think one reviewer could possibly do that, but the fact that you as the manager couldn't see any other way to resolve the situation proves that you shouldn't be the one leading that ship! Her big attempt at solving the situation was free food! After that she dissolved into maniacal phrase spasms of having a merry Christmas interspersed with my destructive power that I wielded with my words in a review. I submit to you that she with her own actions provided the ammunition, the weapon, and the location of where the ordinance would fall. That is perfectly placed on her shoulders. Do yourselves a favor and completely avoid this lunatic and this establishment it's not worth keeping mediocre places like this afloat when there are better places. The bill was almost $50 before the tip of which I was going to leave $4 for the waitress who helped me. To which the manager said take back your money I will tip her. So I got to keep my tip and she made her money on terrible food, what a win for your establishment. I came because of the reviews on Yelp that said the place was good. I've been here 3 times, this is my full opinion; Servers are new, staff is new, but they're doing alright, I asked for a mocha coffee and got an unsweetened plain one. Chicken tenders are a pure 8/10. Greasy but in a good way. Amazing crepes! I tried the fruit one & nutella, both good, and tastes not bad even if refrigerated for leftovers. And I didn't even order an entrée -- my "breakfast" was an appetizer. Meanwhile, the wife's exotic meal was two pancakes and a side of bacon. I like to give true reviews. Meaning, I have frequented the establishment numerous times and have tried numerous items. Only then do you know the true experience of a new restaurant. Although the food is delicious with decent size portions, I am saddened to have to leave what I thought was going to be a new favorite restaurant of mine only a 3 star review. My issue stems for the accuracy of the orders. From working in the industry for half my life, I try to cut slack cause I understand mistakes happen. If I can eat the food, I will. It's not worth the fuss. Once it became a trend that basically every order had something wrong, I felt it was worth mentioning to the establishment. I like to support and help local businesses. So my intention was to help point it out to it could be corrected. Because if I am ordering quite frequently, and majority of my orders are wrong when ordered straight off the menu, then it may be a bigger issue. My next issue stems from the customer service. Each time we call in an order there seems to be an attitude despite the pleasantries we try to exchange especially from one of the managers. The only time there wasn't an attitude was when she first says sorry for the issues and offers a solution (that she ended up not honoring.) After the second time in a row of mistakes and us finally calling about them, we were offered a free order. At first, we even declined the offer since that was NOT our intention. We are only trying to help stop further issues since we enjoy the restaurant and want to support it. But after her INSISTING, we said okay and said how we appreciated it. However, she wouldn't honor it and had an attitude with both my husband and I. Even after, we we got home and our order was wrong AGAIN. She told us the system doesn't let her void anything out once entered. So, she couldn't honor it and that if we told her before ordering that she could have. I politely tried to explain to her that we weren't told to mention it before the order so we didn't know. Most systems knock it off after. I've never went to a restaurant, nor worked at one, that couldn't take stuff off once entered. So, I asked then how was I supposed to know if we weren't told to mention it before ordering. To where her response was, "I have to tell you how to place an order?". I did my best to stay patient. But, the belittling that was done made me lose my patience and I eventually had to hang up. I wasn't going to lose my "cool" and start arguing and possibly yelling over this. So moral is: it's a great restaurant when it comes to the food itself. The food is prepared timely/fast. But, the accuracy, even when ordering straight off the menu, and customer service makes it not worth it. At least not on the regular basis I was going at. Maybe it will be worth it every once in awhile. I wish the owners nothing but the best because it is a gem. But, it's not worth the hassle especially for the price. And, there is a few other breakfast restaurants near by that has nicer staff, better accuracy, better prices, and just as good of food. I hope the issues get resolved so that it can become one of my regular restaurants again. It truly is sad and disappointing :( read more

I eat here regularly and although their portions are very large, if I plan ahead I get a second meal at home, so that makes this already affordable place very affordable for me. The food tastes like homemade and is always fresh. Service is fast so I can grab something for a quick lunch as well, and the help is always very friendly and welcoming. We picked the Sunday dinner specials - I got the chicken dinner special that came with mash, I picked the triple color pasta= they unfortunately forgot the cream of chicken/rice soup which was unfortunate :( Husband got the roasted turkey dinner and his soup also was forgotten :( The dinner also came with free dessert- ice cream and rice pudding Is what we picked. We went for a late breakfast and I was impressed with the service. The waiter was fantastic! The food was plentiful and very good. The menu was several pages, so it took a while to go thru it and order. The coffee cups were never empty and the food was hot and tasty. They have an extensive coffee bar which could be advertised better. All in all we were impressed. The only thing that I didn't like was when the check came, the drinks were $4.00 which seemed really high for plain coffee. The cafe was clean and tables were well stocked. The food is delicious and plentiful. Had lunch on Monday 4/29. I had the Lox Scrambler - every bite I took was loaded with Lox. I got the pancakes to go and they completely filled a take home styrofoam box. We took my son and daughter-in-law there for their Birthdays on Tuesday night. Everyone ordered something's different. We were a party of 6 and everyone just raved about the food, quality and amount. We took home at least one box from every meal. Went here for breakfast and really enjoyed the french toast and bacon. I decided to come the next week to try a salad. I got the crispy chicken salad and was very disappointed. A big chicken breast with what seemed to be tempura batter that was coming off when they cut it. Also it had too much going on like mandarin orange segments that made things wet, a boat load of black olives and the chicken was hot when put on top making the cheese melt.
