Dropped by since i was down in the area. Great location right at the corner in Victor. Server was great. She was very nice, attentive even though she had to go in the back a fair amount. It was at lunch so I can see why they only had 1 server. Hope there are 2 during dinner hours. So... Victor itself is kind of an Asian food desert - have to go to Fairport. At this restaurant, there are dishes from many food cultures - I saw Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Laotian. Interestingly, no Chinese..... The beauty of having all those different cultures is that there is a good choice. The problem... I'd summarize it as jack of all trades phenomena... I had the pho. The broth was very good, but not quite up to par to some of the pho restaurants in Rochester. I like the mix of meat (I got the beef) but it was a touch on the fatty side. They could have added a few more noodles, and I did have to break them apart in the dish - they were kind of clumped. The add on items were pretty standard and all included. I had the okonimoyaki - a Japanese pancake that is fried. Good texturally but I couldn't really appreciate the pork (that's the kind I got) because the Bonita flakes overpowered the pork taste. I will be back to try the ramen. I think they are doing things right, and I am probably too discerning. read more

If you're reading this review, I'm assuming you're considering visiting this restaurant. Just do it, you won't be disappointed!!! My fiancée and I stopped in here out of the blue and were so amazed at how great the food and staff were. The space itself is pretty small but has a pretty cool and cozy design. We sat at a half-booth table. And the waitress brought us some waters and black tea which was at perfect drinking temperature and super delicious! We wanted to start our meal with some Banh Mi, but unfortunately they were out of it (it's very popular) so we decided to do some grilled marinated chicken skewers and some fresh pork spring rolls. The waitress also pointed us towards the fried pork spring rolls, saying that they were unbelievably good and so we decided to do both. Then for our entrees, we ordered the beef pho and the jambong. The fried pork spring rolls were the first to come out and the waitress wasn't lying, these were truly amazing. Inside they had a bunch of vegetables, I think some sort of noodle, and the star was the fresh pork. This is nothing like the frozen spring and egg rolls you get at most restaurants. These are freshly hand rolled and everything inside is super flavorful. You can actually distinguish the taste of each individual ingredient. It's also served with a seasoned fish sauce that adds this extraordinary umami flavor with slight citrus notes. It really brings these rolls to the next level. Up next were the fresh spring rolls. These are made with the same fresh ingredients but with a soft, almost jelly-like wrapper. This is definitely a lighter and more vegetal version, perfect for those looking for a healthier appetizer. Again with their spring rolls, the fresh cuts of pork really stand out and set these rolls apart from other restaurants. As opposed to the fish sauce, we preferred these spring rolls with sweet chili sauce to make the veggies a little sweet and spicy. Next to come out was the pho (pronounced like 'fuh') served with a plate of mung bean sprouts, some jalapeños, lime and fresh basil to add in. The first thing I want to mention that I love about this is that the beef option that we got includes a ton of meatballs, brisket and rare thinly sliced steak. The meat is all tender, fall apart and delicious! This dish is crazy huge as well. It could serve both my fiancée and I with leftovers! The pho is a seasoned broth filled with scallions, onions, cilantro and rice noodles. I love this broth because the flavors are both subtle, but complex and long lasting on your palate. You get hints of savory flavors along with baking spices and a little salt. If you crave a bit of heat, it is also served with sriracha, which my fiancée enjoyed. The rice noodles are perfect for this dish, as they are thin but long and light, with a great ability to hold onto the flavor of the broth. This pho was phenomenal and I will definitely be returning for it! Next, came the jambong. This is another huge dish filled with shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, and white fish. It also comes packed with vegetables and udon noodles in a slightly spicy broth. I don't feel that the broth was as seasoned as the pho but it still had good taste to it and was definitely spicier, but not too spicy. I'll be completely honest, the pho was so good that it was hard for this dish to follow up, so I wish this had actually come out first. But that being said, this was still quite yummy. All the seafood had absorbed the flavors and spice of the broth (with the exception of the shrimp which was a little disappointing) and there's just so much of it. The udon noodles are quite thicker and softer than those in the pho, which actually goes really well in complimenting the broth as this broth has a bit of a soft, almost oily texture, sort of like hot and sour soup. If you're a fan of seafood and spice, this is a great dish to go for. Finally, the grilled marinated chicken. Unfortunately, there was a problem in the kitchen and the waitress informed us that they were over cooked, but not to the point where they are inedible. She told us she took them off our bill but we were welcome to have them or she could make it again. We opted to just take the ones she made because we were already stuffed and we just wanted to try a bite. The first bite I tried was just plain. It didn't really have much flavor but that could be just due to it being slightly over cooked. Then, I tried another bite with the sweet and spicy Korean sauce that it came with and it was just bursting with sweet and umami flavors and a dash of spice. The chicken ends up acting as a means to serve this beautiful sauce that's just exploding with flavor! The best part is that the bill ended up coming to less than $50 for all the food we got. It's an insane value that fed us for days with high quality food made with fresh ingredients that burst with delicious taste in every bite. read more

We were excited to try out Sweet Basil, but ended up leaving as there were significant problems. Upon entering I noted a table of 7 and a table of 2 seated waiting for service. We were seated. As we waited for menus the table of 7 left. They appeared frustrated. Several take out customers were in and out, but they also waited a longer than average time. We eventually did leave as we didn't have any excess of time to wait for a meal. Bottom line, they were severely understaffed out front and may also have been in the kitchen. Sweet Basil Cafe easily has the best Asian cuisine in Rochester. My parents and I stopped by during a cold, flurry of a day and were pleasantly surprised at the warmth and coziness both of the food and the service. We each got some of their beef pho and shared pad Thai and fried rice. The pho was immaculate, a rich broth paired with melt-in-your-mouth meats, hearty as all get out with the tangy flavor of the pad Thai. Clarissa was extremely hospitable and we greatly appreciated her help with the menu to help us decide. 10 stars really. I had the spring rolls on my first visit and damn near cried- they were the most delicious I've had since I backpacked thru S.E. Asia 25yrs ago. I also had the fortune to live in China and Thailand each for a year, so I'm familiar with these cuisines. You can taste the difference between food that's simply cooked as a job, even prepared well, and food that's made with love. All the food, every dish, and I think I've had them all, is cravable and I can taste the love that this chef cooks and assembles his dishes with... you're eating his love affair with ingredients. And that's so exciting to find! I've had the pleasure of talking to him and he researches, and tests, and deeply cares and his offerings. He's INTO it and I don't think this guy will ever stop searching or creating new and inspired recipes. And then there's the matriarch of the front end- who is generous, attentive and truly cares about their customer's experience. I've seen her patiently help people figure out what they want if they don't know what menu items are, and checks in often- which is pretty astonishing bc much of time there's only a 2 or 3 people running the entire show. I've also seen her handle a few really unfortunate incidents with the most un-pleasable, looking-for-an-argument customers, with the utmost grace. She truly tries to please everyone- but there are just a lot of dumb entitled people one has to deal with when in the service industry. I couldn't do it. She makes her own teas from scratch daily often with rose or lychee, soooo good! This place is a GEM and we've been eating there as close to once a week as possible. When I'm sick, I deeply crave their chicken broth- it's unparalleled! When I'm starving and it's late, I crave their noodles. When I'm on a restricted diet- they will do anything to accommodate my annoying limitations (especially annoying to ME bc I desperately *want* the noodles and rice- but never miss those when my dish without them arrives.) Add that, we often can't get to a restaurant early, and they are open later, we're super grateful for this! I will be a fan and customer and follow them wherever they go, whatever they do, on any food endeavor they try. If you're not near Victor, I promise you this place is worth the drive. ESPECIALLY if you know and love S.E. Asian food. I can't think of another restaurant that is of this quality, that is affordable, open later, accommodating, friendly and consistently delicious. Wonderful Asian addition to this area. I can attest that the Korean food here is excellent. Strongly recommend the Soondubu (tofu soup) - great for cold winter nights. My family and I are Chinese-American and moved from Queens recently to the area and are very thankful to be able to eat at a restaurant like Sweet Basil Café. The food is easily on-par with the Vietnamese and Thai food we have eaten in Queens. We mostly come here for the Pho, which does not disappoint. Order the large size and you will get a huge bowl. The Japanese pancake "Okonomiyaki" with shrimp is one of our favorite dishes. The Thai Fried Rice and Pad Thai are great too, all good-tasting, very presentable, and with hearty portion sizes. Pretty much all your Asian favorites other than sushi in one place. What more can one ask for? A very nice lady, who may be the owner/chef's partner (I could be wrong), takes the orders and bring the dishes. And sometimes you will see perhaps their cute daughter too (all speculation). I order ramen almost everytime I come in and I am blown away each and everytime at the amazing flavor of the broth. I have ordered Lol Mein from so many places but theirs is the best by far. A welcome addition to the Rochester food scene, this cafe has a pan-Asian menu, mostly focusing on Southeast Asian. We ordered the springrolls, the rice porridge with chicken, the jeon (Korean pancakes) with kimchi and banh mi. I only tried the rice porridge and the banh mi. The rice porridge was very tasty and very garlickly. My wife, who has lived in SE Asia for several years, remarked how tasty and authentic it was, reminding her of the rice porridge she used to eat over there. The banh mi seemed to be authentic as well. My only frame of reference for "good" banh mi was Whatta Banh Mi, which operated several years ago in Rochester. This banh mi was pretty bland by comparison - which isn't to say that it isn't good or that it's not authentic (it seems authentic - it comes with pate). But aside from the somewhat overbearing spice of the plentiful jalapeños, the only other flavor it had came from the butter on the baguette (the baguette seemed HEAVILY buttered...so much so that I couldn't finish it) One other plus is that portion sizes are huge. All the dishes we ordered, except for the spring rolls, could easily be shared by two people as main courses. I'll be back to try some other dishes. read more

We stopped in for lunch on a long multi-day drive and had an outstanding meal. The menu is excellent! It has a selection of East and South East Asian comfort food. I wouldn't call it "fusion" though, since most of the dishes are faithful versions of specific regional originals. They are mostly warming soup and porridge dishes, but with lots of fresh vegetables so that it's just as tempting in summer as it would be in cold weather. The iced tea (a house blend of hibiscus, rose, and vanilla) was incredibly refreshing and well-balanced. We left totally satisfied and feeling great for the drive ahead.
