I accidentally went to Sweet Basil thinking it was a different Japanese restaurant I had gone to some months ago that I absolutely loved. This turned out to be a happy mistake. I ordered some type of tuna mango tartar appetizer, which was elegantly prepared and tasted awesome. For my main course, I got General Tso's just because I hadn't had it in so long. Was also very delicious and almost more than I could eat. The outside seating area here is drab, but inside is wonderful. Prices and service were both good. I heard a lot about this place and we stopped in one Sunday on the way back from the shore. The word of mouth was correct: it's excellent. We had a great meal. The menu covers Thai, Japanese and Chinese. The food was awesome. It came out fast and looked as good as it tasted. It was worth stopping. They even have the Japanese soda with the marbles for the kids. Yea, the parking sucks but that's the case with a popular restaurant. You can park across the street also. The place is small and tight and somewhat bustling but you're not there for the ambiance, you're there to eat great food. Overall, awesome Asian food at a decent price. This is one of the better asian fusion places in the local Black Rock/Fairfield area. The sushi is decent, although I would rather go to a place like Fin in Fairfield if I was craving sushi. The Chinese dishes are okay. What really sets this place apart from the rest is their Thai food. The Thai dishes are great. I suggest the Pad Thai if you are a newcomer to Thai food. All of their dishes are extremely cheap making it a great place to eat for lunch, which makes parking a little troublesome. Apart from the food, there is a bar, but I have never gone there to drink. I suggest The Field or Taco Loco in the Black Rock area if you are trying to drink and eat. Overall, the restaurant is a nice place to go to for lunch with, especially if you are on a budget. I do not go often but I have eaten here with family and friends a few times and most of the time the food was good and the service was good not exceptional. I would recommend because its local, decent prices especially when feeding your family and a local spot when you just want to get out the house. The location is not the greatest since it is on a main strip hard to get parking space in their lot, I just park across the street in the now defunct Syms parking lot and you should be OK. I get red curry beef often from different places. It's typically the same no matter where I go, but when I ordered from Sweet Basil, it was different. While I often find the sauce to be almost rich in flavor and almost creamy, this tasted more watery and was much thinner. The meal came with a ton of veggies, which is a positive, but I think they sucked up the sauce, leaving very little left for the rice. I'm a sauce person, so I was disappointed when there was no sauce left for the remaining 3/4 of my meal. read more

I usually stick to writing good reviews for restaurants but I have to write about how horrible Sweet Basil is. I have gone there several times. Here are my problems : They add 18% gratuity onto ALL checks during happy hour (without informing you) Servers are rude, and try to rush tables and flip them as soon as possible (wasn't even done with my dinner when the check was dropped) I found a HAIR in my rock shrimp and the server asked "Are you sure it isn't yours?" My response: "Ma'am it was wrapped around the shrimp. No." She then had to ask her manager if it would be ok to get a new one. Ok... The reason I had to write this was because I've been working in a restaurant for the past decade. I know it's common courtesy to let customers finish their meals, and then ask if they would like anything else before dropping the check. I know to inform customers if gratuity will be added (usually on parties of 6 or more). And I know not to accuse the customer of putting their own hair in their food (side note: who would ever do that..?!). I will never, ever return to this place even if it is one of the few options for Asian food in the Fairfield area. I will gladly drive farther for better service and quality. read more

This place is so good, that my coworkers order from there every week (they deliver). My coworkers spend on average of several hundred dollars a week just ordering lunch there. The lunch and dinner food is the same, so get lunch it is much cheaper. However, I do eat dinner there because it is a great atmosphere for a date, you feel like your on vacation. The food is fresh, healthy and tastes great. I eat there too much to list all the food. I get something different every time because I love the variety. The customer service is uncommonly exceptional. You don't see that too much anymore. 5.31.09 I'm changing my review from a 5 to a 3 because well things have changed. They wouldn't deliver food to us at work one time because we were $3 short of the $20 min. , so you ask why would that upset us? Because our department was spending close to a $1K a week on group lunches for several months...so I called them and explained and basically they said too bad. So time went by and everyone at work boycotted them, then we slowly went back to them and another problem, the order was mess up, so then I went back 2 or 3 time since (over several months) and well the food is not as good as I remember and it just seem over rated now. I have to start out with the fact that I am usually a huge fan of this place! I skipped coming here for a month or 2 and service and food has gone to crap! We had to retrieve our own waters after asking for them 5 separate times. They never delivered our soups and then completely forgot one person's meal! Mind you we had a group of 3 not something ridiculous. When the meal that was forgotten finally arrived after everyone was done had cold veggies and rice that was also cold but total mush! When I saw that Sweet Basil had Japanese, Chinese and Thai dishes I was skeptical because that typically means master at none... that is not the case. We came here at a friend's request. There were three of us. I have a few quibbles about how dinner went. First, we had to park across the street because there is about six parking spots. Then we finally got inside and the hostess just looks at us like we're some kind of display. I know that I'm not some hardcore sushi person with my Cali rolls, but they were weirdo and I was kinda afraid I was going to get sick because they didn't taste like much. Then a very large party of scantily clad girls and their colorful counterparts arrived. I was not informed that this place turns into a brothel after hours- but they were seated basically on top of us. I don't know if its common place or not but I would think that if the majority of your restaurant is empty you should put a large table of patrons in a less populated space. Omg my cousins take me here all the time when I visit Connecticut. So many times I forgot to check in.. but honestly if it wasn't for them I would never go. My husband and I stopped here because of good reviews on yelp as well as from a person we know. Unfortunately our experience was not what we were expecting. All my honoi beef cubes were pure fat with a small amount of meat on each piece. I ate 3 pieces and couldn't eat anymore. All the other pieces we could tell were just as fatty. The broccoli was hardly cooked and hard to chew. The mushrooms and zucchini were good in it so this is all I ate from it. This was a 19$ dish that thats was dissatisfying. My husband said his Thai fried rice was alright but not something that would having him coming back for it again. Service was poor didn't even ask how the food was the only time someone came once during our meal they said everything okay then walked away before I could even say anything.
