Sweet basil Thai is my favorite Thai restaurant in Denton. The green curry is delicious and definitely spicy enough.

Best thai in Denton and I have tried most of them. Very nice staff and awesome food. The red curry with tofu is my favorite and the fresh rolls with peanut sauce is delicious! My SO and I went once on Valentine's Day and they flew in a Lakhon Dancer from Thailand (I believe) and she did a beautiful performance! Love this place. read more

most thai places are known for their hospitality and generosity with food portion and quality of service. this experience was unfortunate to say the least. the price to portion / quality ratio is way way off and i don't see this place sustaining much longer. it was a ghost town inside and then i paid $14 for a pad thai that was at best a small lunch portion. won't be eating here again i'm afraid. much much better thai options around Denton read more

My wife introduced me to Sweet Basil when we just started dating. I had no prior experience to Thai food and man did this place make me an addict. We have been ordering from Sweet Basil 1-2 a month for the past 5 years. I absolutely love this place and though I am not longer close to Denton I will go out of my way to drive 30 minutes there to pick a to go order. We always order the same three things which we love: House Cashew Chicken (comes with white rice) - This is probably their most popular dish and it is delicious. Chicken in a brown carmelized sauze with cashews and onions Panang Curry Chick (comes with white rice) - We get this Mild as I am not good at handling food that is too spicy. The chicken is tender and the coconut milk in this curry helps lighten the flavor of this dish. This is really good with the white rice it comes with. Soy Sauce Noodles with Beef - I love these noodles and the beef and the sauce. Really compliment to the other two dishes. So in summary we love this place and if you are near Denton and looking for Thai food give it a shot. At a minimum try the House Cashew Chicken! read more

I always go at lunch. I like the lunch special where you get your entree plus an appetizer and soup. I really enjoy the soup. I always get the sweet and spicy noodles. It is good, I wish they threw a little more vegetables in with the noodles. read more

First time eating here today on a to-go order. Let me first start by saying that the flavor was good. I ordered the lunch special of beef & broccoli which came with a small soup and spring roll. For almost $10, the portions were extremely small compared to every other Thai place I've ever eaten. Hardly any meat at all. Usually beef & broccoli is just that, but it also came with carrots & onions & soupy sauce. I'm not a Thai expert by any measure, so I can't offer my opinion based on that. However, I went here on a date night with my boyfriend and it was amazing. I got the Pad Thai with no spice, and it came just like that and was excellent! My boyfriend got their fried rice, which was delicious and surprisingly sweet. It was different from most other fried rice, which I really enjoyed. We got the Crab Wontons which were amazing and I had a Thai Iced Tea, and that was absolutely delicious! I found the prices to be very fair and the service was great! I would highly recommend stopping in, whether for lunch or for dinner, if you're ever in the area! read more

I used to love this place, but the service here is terrible. In a place that serves spicy food they don't give you enough water to last a meal and it takes 20min for them to realize they should fill an empty glass. They also do not have paper napkins, but if you wipe your nose or mouth with their cloth ones they ask you not to. I ordered green curry and red curry came out. Instead of fixing it the waiter gave me a load of bull that it was red because I ordered it less spicy than usual and that I ordered veggies instead of meat. Making it worse the management tries to talk to you when your eating and tries to recruit you to help them on yelp. This place is becoming a joke and though the food tastes good you can never rely on their service. read more

I just cannot understand how hard it is to clean, especially in a restaurant. I mean, I just don't get it. Hubby and I (well, he more than I) wanted to try this place so I went. I should have listened to my gut. We walk in and the apparent owners are having a "meeting" in the back end of the restaurant. It's a small place but since we were the only ones there we sat wherever. As soon as I sat down my hand went into something sticky, I had to pick rice out of the table mats, and dried rice off my fork (which I got another, but not sure I was even happy with that)...I mean...just gross. Then the waiter looked as if he just either got out of jail or from an all-nighter and kept calling my husband, "boss." really?? Then the other waitress carried in an obviously used 5 gallon cement bucket full of ice and dumped it in the ice bin, then took her HAND and patted down the ice...um...nooooo. Then another couple came in and they too handed over their silverware. As our waiter went to get their drinks, he looked inside a glass, reached his HAND inside and wiped it out and then proceeded to fill up the glass with a deeply stained pitcher of tea...I had enough by then. Oh...food. okay...apparently you get some complimentary chicken soup...which is lemon infused Denton tap water with boiled chunks of chicken floating around in the lemon water...I passed. You also get complimentary crab wontons...i have had better. I had the house cashew chicken...overly sweetened to the point that even mixing it with my steamed rice would not soak up the flavors and mix them well. I couldn't finish it is was so sickly sweet. Hubby got some chicken thai soup dish and he said it was really good and that he would come back. I just looked at him like he was crazy and told him he could go back without me. Me....I'll stick to Panda Express over this place. Ugh. read more

A drawback to this place is that it is off the loop. The seating and interior is cozy and has a bistro feel. The quality of the food is consistent and the desserts are great. The lunch portions are of good size and reasonably priced. I have not had a bad experience here and have found the wait staff to be very friendly and non-intrusive as you are having conversation. read more

I have always really liked this place and have been ordering delivery meals since 2005. My second to last order was in August. The food took over an hour to be delivered, was cold, not packaged well, and the food quality did not live up to previous standards. Since this was not typical for them, I discounted that event. I called for a delivery at 4:40pm Sat Sep 29 and was told the delivery driver comes in at 5pm, so I should get my order by about 5:30. At 5:50, I called to check on the status and was told the order was out for delivery. At 6:30, I called to check on the status again. I was told that the driver had been out for delivery, but did not have my order on that run. However, he was out on a second run with my order, but it could take as long as 45 more minutes. I explained that I should have been in the first delivery run, as that is why I called so early. He offered to cancel my order, let me pick it up [?!] or give me a discount. I asked if the order was out for delivery, was told yes, and accepted a 10% discount. Over another HOUR later, at 7:40, I called again. This time the *delivery driver* answered - he was back from the second run in which my order was supposed to be delivered. At this point it's been almost THREE HOURS since I placed my order [and I am only 6 miles away]. I cancelled the order because I really didn't want to wait another ??? hours for food that was maybe already 2.5 hours old? At that point I could have gone to Thailand faster. Good Thai food. We had Seafood Basil, Shrimp red curry, chicken salad. The sauce with the basil dish is good but the seafood is kind of over-cooked. In Asian cooking, seafood crunchiness, not chewiness, is very important. I love squid but not biting rubber. The curry dish was probably the best with its sweet coconut curry taste. They could give a few more shrimp which is so cheap nowadays. Chicken salad was so-so. I am not a big fan of how Thai treats any red meat or chicken meat. I complained to my Thai friend how Thai cooks should marinate meats with cornstarch to tenderize the meat. My friend said that's exactly what sets Thai apart from Chinese food. Thai just doesn't like all that starchiness in their food. Oh! Well! One just can change a whole culture to suit his selfish taste. read more

I agree with Katie C., that is, that Sweet Basil is my favorite Thai restaurant in Denton. There are several things that make it super. The food is outstanding (I'll get to that in a moment) and the waiter that my bf and I love is Amp. He has to be one the most outstanding waiters around. To the food: Very tasty. The spring rolls are outstanding. I don't know if I'm crazy or not but I think they were better when the restaurant first opened. The quality has gone down a bit. What I liked about their rolls is that there were many ingredients that made up the filling: it wasn't just cooked cabbage like many places serve. I almost always order yellow fresh tofu curry. I'm able to order it mild (but trust me, it still has kick) and the steamed vegetables. I mix them together (and who knows, this may be trés gauche) but I think it makes a perfect meal with brown rice (which thankfully, they serve!) A dish they serve that is out of this world is the roast duck in red curry with pineapples and grapes. The confluence of flavors and textures is amazing...YUMMY!!! I don't order it too often because it's very rich. Their tom kha gai is good, not great and regrettably, the sad thing is that they do not offer woon-sen. read more

ok I'm torn on this one. I love, love, love,love their cashew chicken. It is the best. And I don't mind spending an hour or so at dinner. But when the majority of that time is spent waiting for the dish that you are going to share, (not even two dishes!!), even I get a bit irritated. It does not take 45 minutes to cook one dish of chicken. I will go again, but next time will not plan to do anything else after, like go to a movie. read more

Oh, Thai Sweet Basil, how I love you so. Not to get sappy, but the many memories I have as a former student at TWU revolve around this place. Not only is the food delicious, but the staff are very welcoming to all guests in my experiences. In fact, the first time I ever stepped foot into this restaurant, a small, elderly Thai lady immediately walked up to me, gently grabbed and held onto my arm, and ushered me to a table, all the while asking me what she could get for me. It was an endearing moment...I mean, I'm not sure if she was the owner or simply someone that cooked there, but I never forgot that welcome...I don't think I've ever been personally ushered to a table by a stranger and made to feel more at home. This is what makes this place special. As for the food, this is some of the best Thai food I've ever had....and I've had a LOT of Thai food at different places in different cities. I've tried several of their fried noodle, rice, and soup dishes, which have always been excellent. Perhaps what stands out to me the most are their plump, crispy spring rolls with sweet/spicy dipping sauce - they are the absolute best. I've never had Thai crispy spring rolls with chicken, but the taste is indescribably good in comparison to some of the Thai crispy spring rolls I've had at other places, which use primarily pork in their meat-based rolls. Plus, they use a different type of mushroom, it seems, in the crispy spring rolls that give them a different (but addictive) taste, which makes them stand out from other Thai places in that regard. Anyway, I don't really think you could go wrong with anything that you choose from the menu...The food is always fresh, cooked to order, given in good-sized portions, and most importantly, full of flavor. Oh, and their menu is always pretty cheap, which is always a good thing. Also, the place is located in a shopping center off of Loop 288...I think it's next to Old Navy. I think Thai Sweet Basil would be an excellent first date place or even just a place to go after a long, tiring day to get a great meal. The atmosphere is always very cozy, casual and laid-back, just a really nice, quiet place to eat. The service is also very quick. The decor is quite pretty, too (their veiling fans are shaped like flowers, at least they were the last time I went). The point is: this place is great to eat, regardless of the occasion. read more

Full disclosure: I rarely write 5-star reviews, but I've never written a 1-star review before. In my entire food-lovin' life, I've only had two meals for which I sincerely felt that I should not have been charged money, and this was one. The food wasn't just bad, it was outright disgusting. I mean, turned-my-stomach disgusting. The pad thai looked like Chef Boyardee and smelled like my outdoor garbage can on a summer afternoon. I wish I could say I'm exaggerating, but I'm not. The smell at the table quite literally made me retch. In the interest of fairness, I even forced myself to take a bit, and I resent the fact that manners prohibited me from spitting it out on the floor. My wife and I were at the mall doing some shopping. We hadn't had a chance to be out alone with our daughter in over a year, and decided to have an impromptu lunch together. What a horrible experience. The service was quite good, and I feel badly for the servers writing this, but this restaurant deserves to go out of business. There is no justification for charging money for this. That sounds incredibly mean, but that is my honest opinion. I've never had worse Thai food in my life. There is another option in Denton, and while it's not the best I've ever had, by any means, it is light-years ahead of this place. I want my $42 dollars back. I'm not kidding. We had crap wonton for an appetizer and the house cashew chicken and spicy noodle shrimp for entrees. Everything was terrible the wontons were chewy and barely fried. The chicken from cashew chicken was over cooked and too tough. The spicy shrimp was cooked so poorly it didn't taste like shrimp anymore. We've been eating at Sweet Basil for over four years, especially at lunch because they have great full-meal specials. After tonight, however, it'll be a while before we go back. Things affecting service tonight included a very large party that took up most of the restaurant, and the presence of only half of the normal amount of cooks in the kitchen. The waitstaff was very friendly and accommodating, but it was obvious that the kitchen staff was rushing the food orders in an effort to keep up. We weren't in a hurry to go anywhere after a long day of yard work, so we were fine with sitting in the air conditioner and drinking our sodas. One of our appetizers came out raw, so we pointed it out to the waiter. He apologized and said he'd bring another. He did... and it was also raw. We again pointed it out and told him we didn't want a replacement, as our entrees were out by that time. The entrees were good and appeared properly cooked, and our waiter brought us drink refills without us having to ask. When he brought us the check, we noticed that we'd been charged for our appetizer. We pointed it out, and we really were polite about it. The waiter was also sort of polite as he argued that he'd checked with his boss when he went back the first time with the raw appetizer, and the boss told him something to the effect of "just make them another one, we make 50 of those a day, we know what we're doing." So we pointed out again that we wouldn't insist on getting the appetizer removed from the check if the problem had actually been fixed, but since the same appetizer was brought out raw a second time, the problem hadn't been fixed. The waiter said again that the boss told him "just give them another one, just give them another one," then stated, "maybe the cooks were rushing to keep up with orders," and finally asked if we'd like to speak to his boss, to which we replied that we would. The young man returned maybe three minutes later with a new check and commented, "He had a sudden change of heart. The appetizer's been removed from the check." We thanked him, paid, and left, but we will not be eating there again. When we ask for a problem to be fixed and it isn't fixed, we aren't expecting an argument from waitstaff about how the restaurant knows what it's doing, and when we ask to speak to the manager, we expect to speak to a manager. We don't think we're being unreasonable when we send back undercooked chicken and ask for it to be properly cooked. Sorry, Sweet Basil, but as much as we like your food, we won't risk contacting salmonella. read more

My wife and I recently returned to Denton County and revisited what used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Today's visit was a disappointment. We started with an appetizer of lotus cups. When we complained to our waitress the cups served were stale. She informed us they are made fresh daily and asked to taste one. We allowed her to sample one and afterward she indicated they tasted fine to her despite both my wife and I had each tasted one and found them stale. We asked for a new batch and then were informed they had run out of them. Then we suggested they fry some Thai noddles, which they did. I find it interesting that not only do they question the customer's integrity, they also have to be told what a substitute for a stale item might be. Next our entrees arrived, my wife's was fine and tasty, but bland, however I had ordered the seafood basil which according to the menu was supposed to contain shrimp, scallops, calamari and mussels. After a search of the dish I found it did not contain any mussels. I reported this to our waitress, who stood around at the pos computer, then chatted with another customer before returning to our table to report they were all out of mussels. I found this interesting since she did not appear to consult anyone in the kitchen. I received the general impression that if I hadn't noticed the mussels absence nothing would have been said. It would seem to be more appropriate for the wait staff to inform us they were out of a food item beforehand than waiting for one of us to discover the absence of a protein. The latter would allow us to possibly substitute another protein or select another entree from the menu. Overall I found the restaurants lack of standards for the wait staff and the kitchen disturbing. There was another thing which happened after the waitress brought our check, she commented that our bill had been reduced $4 by accident; she intended to only give us a $2 discount for the omitted and stale items. Normally you'd think proper customer service would warrant a visit for the restaurant manager who would offer an apology, however the manager did not appear. Don't worry the waitress did receive a tip despite all of the items listed above. She is not to blame for her lack of training. The latter is the fault of the absentee management. read more
