My kid asked for a cupcake during our potty training weekend and this place came through with the cookies and cream cupcake ($5 each). My husband picked a giant chocolate cupcake that looks like the Hostess one from our childhood. He said it was so chocolatey and spongy in the best way. I also picked two pan dulces and they were not to my liking. The cuerno de sal was hard as a rock when it is supposed to be super soft. The empanada de fresa had a bad aftertaste like they put too much baking soda and the strawberry filling tasted nothing like strawberry. I've been enjoying their banana cake for over 20 years. When I moved to Oregon, I even had my husband drive one home for me during a road trip. I know they've recently changed owners again, but I wanted to order one for my birthday. I emailed them on March 3rd and 9th asking about their hours, as their website listed them as 4:30am-9pm. Hi everyone! I have ordered from this bakery so many times over the years. I'm sad to say there are new owners and the cakes aren't the same quality as they used to be. The writing is different and really horrible now and the decorating isn't good. The cake also doesn't taste the same. I tried to talk to the owner about the cake and the writing and design but she doesn't speak english and couldn't help me and refused to fix it. Placed an order in person in January, talked with the owner and shows them the inspo picture. I asked if they were able to replicate it, including the writing, the paint splatter effect and the color, they said yes, that there was no issues. Fast forward to the day of pick up, the owner open the box and showed me the cake, it was a blue cake, it didn't have anything, not even the tacky sprinkles. I asked what happened and that it didn't look like the inspo, she said what do you mean? I pulled up the picture and said the only thing correct is the color, but there was no design. She told me that due to the size of the cake she want able to replicate the design. I told her that a simple paint splatter effect isn't affected by the size of the cake, and she could have told me beforehand if she wasn't able to replicate it or at least call and say there was an issue with the design. She kept saying it was our fault for choosing a small cake. I had no issue, I would have bought a larger cake if she told me beforehand. I asked if anything could be added in hopes of making it more appealing to the eye, she showed me three different types of sprinkles she could add and that's the most she can do at the moment. Very disappointed in the results, especially for what was payed for. Had to stop by Safeway to buy stuff in hopes of making the cake look more appealing. The bread was dry. OMG. This cake was *MWAH* chef's kiss! I placed the order online a week ahead of time. The shop called me to finalize what o wanted on the cake. I don't know anything about cakes besides how to eat them. But I was walked through the process and what they are able to do and not do based on the images I had sent online. The cake shop does not do fondant, only icing. I don't know about you, but the RN symbol on the front looks PERFECT. I contemplated for a while writing this review. For many years I've always gotten all of our cakes from SPB. All the kids parties and all special events. But I will say this will be the absolute last time. I will never return , never order any cakes for company corporate functions, or refer this place to anyone. To make a long story short my son got COVID the week of his party. I called early in the week to see if they can push out the cake to another weekend. I had already been able to move the date with the location. It was still a good 4 days away and the bakery gave me thr excuse that the cake layers were already baked and too late to cancel? My issue is, if I am paying at least a hundred dollars for a cake, it better be fresh. And 4 days out and already baked?? C'mon now...that's just unacceptable. I wasn't asking to be refunded I wanted to simply change the pickup date. 4 days away. Here's another kicker. I'm a baker as well. I understand how cake layers work. I would NEVER bake a cake 4 days out just due to quality & taste. The only way to fix a 4 day old cake is to dredge it in syrup or a cake soak. You can do that with only old cake. You get what I mean. Any OLD cake. SPB gave me one excuse after another. Plus I'm sure they could have sold the cake to someone else it was one of their most popular flavor combos. Instead they have lost thousands of dollars in profit on just one person for all my future events plus everyone at my sons party that I had a few weeks later, because I shared what SPB wasnt willing to do. I had no choice but to pick up the cake plus the cupcakes I ordered extra, lugged my sick son all the way to the East side to grab the cake that no one would be able to eat. In a household of two people and my son not feeling well a 7 layer cake that would have normally fed at least 30 became a prop for bday photos and then ended up in the trash. I'd also like to add one more thing. I did taste the cake. And the last two times I've ordered from SPB the taste and quality of the ingredients have definitely gone downhill. Even friends that have ordered from them in the past have confirmed what I thought was only me noticing the change, but it was evident for them as well. They've also stopped ordering cakes. I've followed this bakery for many many many years including their short stint in Cupertino back in the day...never again. I'm done with this place. The lady who helped us was super nice and shows us the flavors and also told us about their cakes. My family has been ordering cakes from here for over 20 years so clearly that should say something! I'll start off by pointing the obvious that they don't do any fondant work and the designs are kept simple on the cakes. It's also one standard writing on the cakes (freehand instead of certain fonts like other bakeries can do). What brings us back is the FLAVOR of the cakes!! I'll choose a delicious flavored cake over a "wow" fondant cake that is ok to serve at parties anyday! My family & I will not be doing business here again. The cake on the left is what we thought we were getting minus the fourth tier for $800. Plus, they have horrible customer service. When I went in to discuss my concerns, the owner literally walked away from me before I was done talking to her. I bought this cake for my mom's wedding. The banana cake itself was delicious, but the presentation for $800 was not what we expected. First of all, the tiers were not centered. I brought this to the owner's attention & she said it's because the table was not leveled. I asked if she spoke to the venue/wedding planner so they could fix this, she said no. To me, the tiers do not look centered on top of each other at all as opposed to leaning due to an uneven surface. Second, the seams of the cake were showing. The owner did not place them in the back. We actually had guests, think there was a hair on the cake until they looked closer. Third, we were supposed to have flowers on the top tier. The owner said she used all the flowers given to her, but I know my mom spoke to her about how much space would be between the tiers so the florist could provide enough flowers. Fourth, we were supposed to take the pieces for the tiers back within a week to get $30 back. I am a school principal so I work from 10 am - 2 pm, the hours they are open during the week. I called several times, but got no answer and couldn't leave a message. I drive in from Gilroy, so I wanted to be sure they'd be open on Sat. I finally emailed and got a response, so I went in today to return the items & explained I had called several times, but I didn't get the refund. I don't really care about the $30, but their hours make it close to impossible for working people to do business with them. Save your money and time and go elsewhere for your cake. read more
