I was excited to try this establishment because the pastries looked beautiful, but unfortunately the experience went downhill from there. I stood in line for about five minutes waiting to be helped while multiple customers who came in after me were immediately acknowledged and assisted first. I was wearing a bright yellow shirt and standing clearly in view, so it was difficult to understand how I continued to be overlooked. I even glanced toward the camera because I genuinely could not believe what was happening. What disappointed me most was the customer service. When I later asked for the names of the staff members working during the interaction, Nick, Anianas, and two others.. they questioned why I was asking. I explained that I felt ignored and wanted to accurately reference who was present during the incident. As I was leaving, I overheard one of the workers say, "I feel bad for her walking out," which only added to the frustration because it confirmed they were aware of the situation the entire time. Sorry that I apparently did not fit the "typical clientele" you were more interested in helping first. This occurred between approximately 9:55 AM and 10:05 AM on Thursday, 5/21. Ironically, I had planned on purchasing a large order of pastries for my fiancé and his coworkers, but after the way I was treated, I decided not to spend my money here. [Menu]: The #1 baked good to order here is the Almond Croissant, but they ran out of the regular almond croissant at 12:45 PM on Sunday during my first visit. Very disappointing experience, and unfortunately this has lost my business. I've ordered from Sweet Wheat Bakery multiple times in the past and had always been happy, which makes this even more frustrating. I purchased a $60 fraisier cake for a birthday, and despite living only 5 minutes away and going straight home, the cake did not hold up at all. After being stored overnight in the refrigerator, it had essentially collapsed before we could even cut or serve it. The taste was also far from what I've come to expect. The cake was overwhelmingly jam-heavy with barely any cream, completely lacking the light, balanced flavor a fraisier should have. It was not enjoyable and most of it ended up being thrown away. I reached out directly to the bakery to resolve the issue and gave them the opportunity to make it right, but received no meaningful follow-up. For the price and reputation, this was unacceptable. No. They changed and ruined their quiche recipe, 75% of the food delivered is old and stale, and i have proof of 3 orders they've messed up, or delivered old, stale food. Located on the corner of Avenue G and PCH, it is a quite large bakery with its own parking lot and inside seating for 50+ people. There are also many tables outside for those who prefer al fresco. Fraisier Cake: the strawberries were fresh, the cake was soft, airy and not too sweet. Raspberry Vanilla Macaron: Both the crust and filling were on the hard side. It was also quite sweet. Morello Cherries Clafoutis: Both the crust and filling were soft. The tanginess of the cherries offset the sweetness of the filling. Quite exquisite. Flan: the crust was slightly on the hard side but still quite buttery and delicate. The custard filling was soft, not too sweet, and very tasty. Walnut and Cranberry Bread: the crust was not too hard, and the crumb was soft and very wholesome. They did not skimp on the walnuts and cranberries for sure. I stepped back into Sweet Wheat recently to see if the service and ambiance has changed in any way that would want me to spend more time here. While I believe things have kept up in terms of quality there's some items that seem to have changed in terms of quantity-- one of my favorite items for instance has gotten smaller (flan) which is now down to bite size-- I can't understand why as it's just milk and eggs pastry mix. Meanwhile some of the sandwiches are too cheesy-- in particular the salmon was over loaded with cream cheese which destroys the salmon flavor. Obviously this doesn't mean to say every item has changed -- meanwhile, the display counter still looks very appealing and clean. I sometimes feel that this place lacks a bit of floor planning as the checkout area really is a place of chaos especially when full-- this needs a bit more thought perhaps? One other observation is that outside music is way too loud-- maybe just turn down the volume a few clicks would help people talk and not have to shout above the speakers! Overall I'm in a good space with Sweet Wheat-- it still carries itself very well and the staff are impeccable-- which is always a sign of great morale and confidence in the management. read more

Food - large selection of pastries and desserts. However the desserts weren't any good. The pain au chocolat had a weird cheesy taste that was extremely unappetizing. The pumpkin tartlet tasted extremely artificial. The almond pain au chocolat was overbaked/burnt. On the bright side I had the tuna sandwich and it was quite fresh and good. The baguette part was nice and chewy and the egg is a nice touch/addition to the tuna. Hubby had the chicken pesto and was not satisfied. Chicken pesto wasn't as high of quality, bread unevenly baked (some parts hard to chew), cheese was mediocre and the sandwich overall was nothing to write home about. Service was awful. It definitely could use improvement. It was extremely unorganized and the workers all stayed behind the counter. Zero acknowledgement and tables and floors dirty. Did a pick up order to skip the line, but it was frustrating trying to get any one to help us. Order was also not ready at the time of pickup. They ran out of one of the pastries, but accommodated by allowing us to select another instead, so at least there was that (even though it didn't taste any good) . Parking lot is small and cramped. I was craving for dessert and a friend recommended this place and I am shocked I've never notice this place before as I've passed by it so many times lol. There's ample amount of parking around the building and the place itself is quit spacious. I came here close to closing time around 7:00pm (they close at 8;00pm) and there were plenty of tables available. We ordered the chocolate mousse, raspberry tartlet, crème brûlée tartlet and cappuccino. The crème brûlée tartlet was by far our favorite. It was so good I'm def coming back for more. The raspberry tartlet was good as well. I was a bit disappointed initially that their large coffee size was 12oz until I realized just how strong their coffee was. I can really taste the difference. The only thing we didn't like was the chocolate mousse. Something tasted off and the little chocolate drops on top was hard and did not taste good either. No big D. Updating my review, though the rating remains at 4 because of what I will explain further below. Sweet Wheat reminds me of the traditional all day bakeries you find all over France. Early morning, you come here for a croissant and a coffee. Mid-day you might have a light lunch. Then an afternoon pastry and for those times when you want an indulgence you get a box of their confections. I can see what they are attempting to create and for the most part they are successful. However, the quality of their food items are a bit inconsistent from product to product. To explain what I mean, take their pastries. Order their mille-feuille and it is exquisite - delicate layers of puff pastry with an equally sumptuous pastry cream in between. Surely that means their other confections would be equally delicate and exquisite. Alas, no. The raspberry tartlet is a particular disappointment - a small mountain of raspberries over frangipane (almond cream), with a vanilla cream in the center. The frangipane is too thick and the entire thing feels like you're eating a thick cockle with the fruit as an after thought. And yet, both the raspberry tartlet and the mille-feuille are priced similarly. This same inconsistency can be seen in their savory offerings and taken together, it makes you feel like their offerings are overpriced. And truly, in my opinion, some of their pastries are absolutely worth the price tag. While others are not and I likely won't be ordering those items again. If they can up their game a notch so to speak, and produce everything at the same quality, then this would be a 5 star place. However, I believe that in order to do that they'd have to limit their offerings to some extent. And I certainly respect business owner's decisions on what makes sense for their profits. My favorites so far: - Chocolate eclair - Mille-feuille - Lemon meringue tartlet - Apple tarte tatin - Quiche - both the vegetable quiche and the traditional Quiche Lorraine are really good. - Canelé - they remain the only bakery in the area with canelés that are up to standard. And for that alone, I will continue to come here. I honesty don't get this place. It has a decent location and located on a busy street. Parking can be a bit tricky even though it has its own lot. Always drove past this location on my way to work. My girlfriend and I finally decided to stop by! Parking is small, but there is tons of street parking both on PCH and in the neighborhood! Tons of seating options both indoor and outdoor. There are free water cups! Staff is super super friendly and will make sure your first experience is the best. FYI, if it's your first time and provide a number you get a free baguette. The smoked salmon sandwich was amazing, it came toasted so the salmon was nice and warm, the baguette is really fresh and not too harsh to bite into. Well if you love desserts you are in for a treat! I tried a few over the weekend, and by that I mean I went back multiple times. My favorite was the flan with the pie crust. The texture was creamy and sweet. Super creamy like a custard. There are plenty of lunch items to pick from also if you're looking for sandwiches between others. There is plenty of parking. Advice was okay. First night was better than second visit. The first team was super sweet and helpful. The second time around I felt uncomfortable having to ask for a bag to carry my box of desserts to go. The cashier had trouble opening the bag and placing items in. Vibe was off.
