Came here since I had the time and decided to come here since my bookmark was gathering dust. The place was very simple; a couple of tables outside, nice counter, chill atmosphere. I ordered the short rib platter and the short rib roll to go. Unfortunately after I placed my order I had to walk to the ATM across the street because their computers weren't working. No worries, the blond in the front was very sorry and also very pleasant. The bread was moist and the short rib was super soft but the meat was bland. Once I got to the middle I was able to taste garlic but honestly I was expecting more flavor. The simple green salad that was paired next to it was nothing to write home about. I'd heard rave reviews of this place for a while, and had always known it as the best lunch spots for all of my friends who worked in the nearby studios. The decor was really charming, but of course it's popularly meant long lines and it was hard to get a table. For people who like really bold and unique flavors, the lavender duck confit balances out all the different ingredients, but is overall very powerful. For something more subtle, and honestly less in your face with flavor, go for the fig BLT. read more

Amazing is not enough of a big word. This place was incredible! We came in at 8:30 ish (Only 39 minutes before they close) and were still able to get a table and get the "Full service" that we were looking for. The staff were really friendly! Especially Spike? Well, I have officially passed the one-month mark as a resident of North Hollywood, California! One thing I have learned thus far is that there is NEVER a shortage of dining establishment options for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner in the NoHo/Studio City/Toluca Lake neighborhoods. Before my roommate and I signed our lease at a real-estate brokerage in Toluca Lake, we grabbed a quick bite to eat at SweetSalt, which was right across the street. The Salmon Crab Cakes and Seasonal Veggies were splendidly delicious and gave me the energy to sign *a lot* of papers... Fast forward to our second week in the apartment. With two friends in town and a need for some serious morning fuel, I decided to bring one of them to SweetSalt. The rest is history. Ambience: When you walk up to SweetSalt, its friendly exterior and charm invite you inside. Plenty of tables and the addition of built-in seats with pillows add a nice touch. I enjoy how open it is, like there is nothing to hide. The pastries are displayed in all their glory and the kitchen area is exposed, delving tremendous amounts of delectable smells. Once you are greeted at the front, it's time for business. Menu/Ordering: SweetSalt's menu is on the smaller side, but that doesn't mean it lacks quality dishes. My friend and I decided on the Scrambled Eggs, which come with a choice of either avocado or bacon. What's even better is that you get toast, potatoes, and a green salad with light vinaigrette... All for $8!! Now that is a deal. To satisfy the Sweet, we got a baked Cinnamon Sugar Donut to share. To wash it down, we added hot tea and a latte. Service: When you order at the front, SweetSalt uses the number system. We took our drinks and donut to one of the tables with the built-in seats. They have pre-rolled napkins with silverware near the front, but if you forget to grab one, the waiters are more than happy to assist. The food came out in a timely fashion and our waiter brought us the necessary condiments and butter/jam. Food: The food was very satisfying and quite tasty. Scrambled eggs cooked well, nice dressing on the salad, potatoes roasted to perfection, and the sweet, fruity jam was just right. We also LOVED our donut. All in all, a great meal. Hello fellow GRUBBERZ! Today's GOOD FOOD HUNT took me all the way to Toluca Lake, CA. I called my friend and FELLOW FOODIE, Lisa, to grab a bite to eat. I had originally suggested King's Deli - but when I got there...it was not open. Lisa recommended Sweetsalt which was just a few blocks away. Parking was easy - especially at 10am on a Sunday as Riverside Drive was pretty empty. We walked in and I was impressed with the decor. It's very countryside barn-ish - if that's a thing? . Picnic benches outside and wooden tables inside and a bench the whole side of the interior. There's a spot in the rear of the seating area dedicated to condiments, To Go stuff, water, etc. By the register there is a display w some AWESOME looking desserts. The next time I'm in the area I plan on they the Lemon Thyme Layer Cake. It was 3-layers of necessary treadmill! The gentleman at the register was very helpful and gave us an assist when I mentioned it was my first time there. Lisa & I decided, as we usually do, to get a bunch of items and split them. We ordered the Breakfast Sandwich Ciabatta; Kumquat Avocado Toast; Egg Hash; coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. We didn't have too wait long for our food. Both the Ciabatta Roll & the Avocado Toast came accompanied w a side salad of greens that was delicious! The Toast was tasty but unimpressive. I'm not sure what it was - maybe it was that the one slice of bread smeared w avocado didn't seem enough? Maybe it needed more of the kumquats? Maybe the bread should've been sliced THICKER? Not sure. Let me know what you think. The Ciabatta breakfast sandwich was well balanced - the bread was crunchy, tasty and enough egg but needs to have a little more bacon. I'm hopeful cause the bacon was YUMMY! The Egg Hash was a little spicy - even though I asked for it to be double-hot. If you like it HOT - make sure you ask for peppers on the side. The dish was really good - it also had the bacon-and the potatoes were tender. They do have a few hot sauces on the condiment table so the heat is manageable to your desired heat. The coffee was...okay. I'm a fan of LAVAZZA Italian Caffe so that makes me either a coffee snob or a connoisseur, and I'm okay with either. The server was very nice. I do want to say - to the two women that approached me and Lisa - while we were finishing our coffee and conversation- to ask if we'd be leaving soon cause they had a few people joining them - open your eyes as there were probably 6 other tables they could've sat at...which is why I chose not to move. Only in California can you expect that someone move - while still eating - so you can sit at a preferred spot. RUDE! All-in-all Lisa and I had a great time at Sweetsalt! Classic lunch spot for us! Just had breakfast here today and it was quite fabulous and wallet friendly (for LA). Parking is never too hard to find, just double check the street signs in the neighborhoods for street cleaning (usually Thurs/Fri). When you go in, menus are on the right next to the door and you order at the counter and grab a number and sit anywhere you want. I've had the Steak & Brie Sandwich which was delicious but a bit heavy for a lunch time meal when you have to go back and work for the rest of the afternoon. I really enjoyed their Tossed Sauteed Quinoa bowls that you can personalize and add whatever you want. You can a large amount and it fills you up! Amazing! I loved both our sandwiches we ordered at Sweetsalt. We were recommended the Chicken Truffle Sandwich by a good friend, and the Shrimp Poboy Sandwich was recommended by the cashier. Both were delicious, but that Chicken Truffle has got me wanting to go back for more. The bread was warm, the chicken was tender and flavored by the mushrooms, and everything about that sandwich was delicious. Great portions and lots of meat in both sandwiches. The Shrimp Poboy tasted very clean; it was grilled shrimp rather than fried, but I prefer it that way since you could actually taste the freshness of the shrimp. Both came with standard salads with vinaigrette. We washed everything down with an Iced Coconut Mocha Coffee with Almond Milk. It was heavenly and tasted like Almond Joy. The coffee was not too bitter, and you got a hint of coconut with that balance of chocolate. The Almond Milk just gave it a more nutty flavor. Love. We also got a lemon olive cake for dessert, and it had to be the most moist cake I've ever had. I've had other olive oil cakes, but this was dense, rich, but moist enough where you didn't have to take a sip of water after each bite. Also, you don't get a heavy olive oil taste at all, it was just enough to keep the cake moist. We're already plotting our next return! read more

I believe I got some dead shots because I've had Groundwork coffee before & liked it. What I tried here was the Lavender Vanilla Bean Latte and the Coconut Mocha. The saving grace was the delicious pastries we tried! I loved the Lemon Olive Oil Cake & also the Lavender Shortbread. Very tasty and fresh. Thank you to the pastry chef, you're great! I came here for brunch on a Sunday and I loved it! I had the avocado toast, iced coffee and a pistachio macaroon. The avocado toast was amazing, the salad that it came with was also very flavorful. Some places lack with their dressing flavor but this was really good. I also added an egg on my avocado toast for some extra flavor. The iced coffee was good as well. Who knew three words could forever change my idea of sandwich time: Short rib roll. Good golly miss molly, what I wouldn't do for one right now. Damn you Toluca Lake for being so "over there." The short rib roll was so jam-packed with flavor I might have been making strange, but happy noises with every bite. The roll was glistening with just a tad bit of grease and I wanted to rub the short rib all over my body. True story. The side salad was also a real treat, just your basic spring mix but pumped up with a salty liquid glaze. The sandwich fit perfectly in my two hands and combined with the salad, left me in a state of lust and satisfaction. Soooooooo gooooooooood! read more

Despite the fact that my short rib roll was tasty enough that I thought about it days later, fantasizing and daydreaming like someone newly in puppy love, only three stars feel fair to me. That's because while the menu is fantastic and food top notch in terms of flavor, there are weaknesses that mar the overall experience, especially if you are ordering to go. For one, I had to eat the sandwich innards sans bread-the brioche roll was a soggy mess by the time I got my order home. If the bread can't handle travel, don't offer it to go or find another bun, especially when it's the most touted item on your menu. My other gripe is similarly due to the fact that I wasn't eating there. Once you order, you have to wait 10-20 minutes for your food. That's a bit much given the offerings-soups, salads and sandwiches should be all but ready to go, and the marketing of Sweetsalt as a restaurant/market only encourages that expectation. Again, perhaps not a huge deal, if there was space to stand while waiting. I must have walked a mile in the tiny shop while I waited; getting out of the way of people entering or exiting the place, getting out of the way of people looking for utensils or coffee creamer, getting out of the way of other people waiting with nowhere to wait. It got old. It made $11 for a sandwich sound less and less appealing. And it gave me time to be unimpressed by the limited assortment of condiments, sweets and spices on offer. It felt like the restaurant was doing too much for its space (or lack thereof) to do it well. By the time my food was ready I was over it and the fact that the roll was soggy told me maybe it was best to take the meat, cheese and onion concoction to lunch the next day. When I did, I was in heaven. But I'm not so much of a foodie that I'm walking through hell to get there. read more

Well, I gave this my 3 times rule. I'm just not that impressed. I went the first week they were opened. I went again about 3 months later. I just came from there today. For the food: champagne chicken salad- I felt that the presentation was pleasant. The salad itself was under salted, the dressing was a bit watery and the chicken was dry. When you're poaching chicken, when done correctly, you will have tender juicy meat. When you're boiling a lean piece of meat, even though it is submerged in a liquid, you will end up with dry stringy meat. The lobster roll: the lobster was properly cooked. Again, the dressing was under salted. If there were any herbs in the salad, I didn't taste it. They used a very crusty baguette, probably from La Brea bakery. In my opinion was the wrong roll for the sandwich. Overall, it wasn't a traditional lobster roll and there wasn't enough creativity to make it an update to a classic. Cappuccino: made with LaVazza coffee. A cappuccino is NOT a latte. If your order is for here and you have the porcelain cups... use them please. Yes, I am a coffee snob. I prefer to drink my coffee in a porcelain cup vs a paper cup. There was no third entree because I ordered the champagne chicken salad twice to be sure that it wasn't a fluke. The store itself: service is not exactly friendly. The counter folks seem to hate their jobs and are just collecting a paycheck. On the positive, I love the European feel to the store. So I admit it! I have been in a Yelp black hole for months now, barely in LA due to traveling and definitely not thinking of writing when I am. Sweetsalt called to me and forced me to write a review. The same powerful draw that prompted me to write my very first review out of complete love of an amazing vet is the same zeal I LOVE Sweetsalt with. So it might be the last one for a while...please savor :) Albiet a small blink-and-you-miss-it Toluca Lake shop front, this is no doubt who have enjoyed it, a foodie paradise delightfully premiering Top Chef alum Alex Eusebio. Concept is simply done culinarily superb sandwich, salad, soup fare featuring pairing with some incredible cheese plates and slightly sinful sweets. Let's just review because the food totally speaks for itself... Sweet pepper and proscuitto with a cascabel pepper sherry reduction - fresh, delightful and beautiful flavor profiles that only slightly make you want to lick the rest of the reduction and pepper combo from the plate...not that I would do that ;) Lavender duck confit sandwich - Let's just start with the amazingly perfect artisan bread. I lived next to FCI in NY with students that only kinda stole loaves upon loaves daily for my eating pleasure and Sweetsalt's breads are across the board the freshly baked, perfect crusty texture, make bread-lovers melt breads up to their caliber. The duck was everything a pulled, deliciously moist confit duck should be, and the complements of chevre, sweet confit onions, and a delicate lavender hint (it is light, so don't be afraid by the lavender if you're not a lover) take it over the top to sinfully savory but in a great way. Short Rib Roll - Delicious short rib I enjoyed every bit as much as ones I have splurged on at Craft and Michael Mina restaurants in a tasty but non-overpowering onion brioche bun. Again confit onions and cheese selection were stellar. Desserts - Had to take a break to eat them, but the selection of Cake Monkey sandwiches and Komfort chocolates to go were great as well. We didn't do the chocolate caramel bread pudding, but it looks amazing and is so on the list for next time. Overall, there are very few sandwich shops I would say are worth braving traffic and moving out of my westside bubble. Sweetsalt is a definite exception!! Downfalls to be fair: can be very overcrowded and hard to find a table, but only because they are that good. read more

I was a big fan of Restaurant 15, so when I heard about Alex Eusebio's latest venture Sweetsalt Food Shop I was anxious to try it. Here is what I ate: Roasted Seasonal Vegetable salad with goat cheese ($7) While very good, the salad was quite small and sparsely populated with vegetables. The plate arrived with a small pile of lightly dressed spring mix, two tiny yellow beets cut into halves, four tiny baby carrots, 2 haricot verts, and two tiny (1' diameter and 1/2 inch thick) medallions of goat cheese. The salad was tasty, but considering the price, should have either been much cheaper or much larger. Turkey, bacon, and avocado sandwich ($9) Once again, while tasty, the sandwich was very small. The sandwich consisted of a small amount of sliced turkey, avocado, 2 strips of applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, arugula, whole grain mustard, on ciabatta bread. The bacon was the winner on this sandwich. The turkey was fresh and yummy but was completely overpowered by the mustard and bacon. The plate also contained a small handful of lightly dressed spring mix. The food was overpriced but good, however the overall experience was disappointing. The person who was at the register, Eusebio's wife Sara, was less than customer service oriented. When I stopped mid-order to discuss choices with my lunch date (by the way, we were the only people in the restaurant) our cashier huffed, rolled her eyes, and basically ignored us until she was ready to help us again. Seriously? If I hadn't just driven all the way from Valencia I would have walked out. So, overall: good food, small portions, and less than warm and inviting service. This restaurant is a case of style over substance or, in other words, menu sounds great but food doesn't follow through. It's also another case of a restaurant punishing vegetarians. My roasted veggie sandwich was $12 and I asked for them to add cheese. That cost another $2. So the total was $14, the same cost as a steak and brie sandwich. Why is it that places like this and Tender Greens actually make dishes made with upscale meats and animal products cheaper than dishes with veggies that come out of a can? Let's face it, a couple of strips of roasted bell pepper (from a jar or can), a couple of thin strips of eggplant and the non-existent "artichoke puree" (also from a jar) that was supposed to be on the sandwich but really wasn't (I saw maybe 1/2 teaspoon of something yellow on my bread) - do these cost the same as a freaking steak? To add a little insult to injury, they forgot to put the cheese on the sandwich even though I paid for it. What I got for $14 was about 5 ounces of canned vegetables on bread that wasn't grilled but for about 20 seconds. It's obvious when a restaurant isn't vegetarian friendly: when their only vegan/vegetarian dish has sprouts on it and is made with wheatberry bread. That sprout/wheatberry BS went out of style in the 1980's along with The Good Earth restaurant, The Source and Hamburger Hamlet. Attention stuck in the 80's chefs of the world: sprouts and whole wheat bread isn't what vegetarians really eat these day. Anyway, I really should give this place only 1-2 stars because they're planning a Valentine's prix fixe event with foie gras, which isn't only illegal, it's cruel. Foie gras is made by shoving a tube down a bird's throat and then dumping gallons of food into their stomach until they get liver disease. So called "fatty liver" is what foie gras is. Not very romantic SweetSalt, but if it turns you on, I guess there are some good S&M clubs you can join to celebrate V-day as well. This place is cute on the surface but when it comes time to deliver, not a haven for vegetarians (unless you like 1980's chic food) or those who care about animal suffering and where their food comes from. Try Mendocino Farms instead. Cheaper food and better menu that doesn't think vegetarians are sprout and wheatberry eating creatures who wear Birkenstocks and tie-dyed t-shirts. read more

I was really excited to try Sweetsalt based on a recommendation from a coworker. My team wanted to pick up some food to bring back to the office, so I suggested it. Let me start out by saying that this is NOT a convenient place to get take out food from. There is NO parking (especially during lunch in Toluca Lake) and they have no take out counter. When I arrived, after circling for parking about 15mins. I went inside to find a mile long line. I didn't see a takeout counter, so I called the main number and asked if I was supposed to wait in line since I was getting takeout. The girl on the other line responded "um, yea" rudely, like I was stupid for asking. I really don't understand the point for getting takeout food, if we are not able to get our food and go. After bringing the food back to the office, we unanimously agreed it it was nothing special. Especially for the expensive prices. These kitschy, upscale sandwich shops seem to be a trend these days. Looks like we'll be sticking to Olive and Thyme next time. Oh and the champagne chicken salad isn't a tossed salad, it's a tuna salad like substance. I know it's rare that I review a place right after I leave, but Sweetsalt is that good that I don't want to forget anything. This is my first time eating here, and let me tell you I'm a fan. I ordered the Turkey, Bacon, Avocado Ciabatta, and let me tell you, I ordered a second one to go. This was well above and beyond a great sandwich, but what made it so great you ask? I'm glad you did. The bread: omg the bread, fresh, moist, just enough crunch, but soft enough to make the sandwich heavenly. The turkey: fresh, juicy, tender, thick and full of flavor. The bacon: thick, crisp but not over crunchy, succulent, almost tasted like maple bacon. The Avocado: ripe, tasty and a lot of it, they don't skimp on their portions. They use mixed greens and an excellent mustard to compliment and tie the whole creation together. And for $10, its more than worth it. My coworker got the lettuce bowls, and I tried a little piece of chicken, it was so good, I'm going to try that next time. He also got the tomato, basil soup which he said for a cold day was perfect temp and for tomato soup lovers, its a must try. Our other coworkers started eating before I got my food, but didn't tell me what they ordered. I know one was a champagne chicken sandwich which she was telling me how great it was, but can't even guess the other 2. Food-5 After we were done I went back to the counter and bought macaroons for everyone to take back to work. I must say the salted caramel was my favorite, and it is theirs too. A few of the other ones were a little too crispy or crunchy for my liking, I thought all macaroons were moist and chewy?-4 I also ordered their Coffee Cake-5, and their pumpkin spice gingerbread moon pie-5, don't ask just go try one. Dessert-4.5 You can watch the food being prepared, and everyone in their is super nice and friendly. Even if you go back up there 2 or 3 times to add or change something. They have an ice cold water jug, so you can go and refill your water as many times as you want without bothering a waiter or waitress. Some might take a star away for this, but I found it more than convenient. Service-5 Overall I give it a 4.5. Parking could be better because it is on Riverside, but I can't fault them for that. 5 Stars? Yes. Why? Stop crying and I'll tell you. Think about something for a second... Lunch-type places in the Valley for sandwiches/soups/salads that aren't chains... Not many. And the ones you CAN think of are either dive-y or idiotically pretentious. Sweet Salt - a breath of fresh air. This clean, white-washed wooden, country cafe is one of a kind in Los Angeles - in fact it doesn't feel like you're in LA, (except for some of the clientele). It's on the small side & the seating is limited, but it's worth the wait. The chef/owner is brilliant & his unique soups & sandwiches are not only delicious, but he loves what he does. The chalkboard behind the registers displays the special of the day which might be whatever he wants to make that day. A friend and I were waiting for our sandwiches, & he brought them out himself, and he did so with a special kind of smile, a smile that said, "I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when they take a bite of this, because it's going to be the best thing they've ever tasted" - kind of giddiness. He was so happy with anticipation. & he was right (if he was thinking it). The spicy tomato soup is unbelievable & hands down the best anywhere. Get the shrimp po-boy or the grilled chicken breast sandwich - from what I hear, the short rib sandwich & the BLT are also ridiculous good. Good coffee too.
