Because of the location, I've given this place a lot of chances. The food and coffee are good! But these people need to learn a lesson about customer support and the reason why other places stay in business year after year. I've had several odd encounters with the people running the place, mostly over strange rules they have. You most definitely cannot have it your way at this place. Today I vowed never to set foot in the place again. It's 4:01 on a Sunday afternoon, the doors are open, the place is still full of people, and upon ordering a latte, I was told they were closed. But it's just a latte, I said. They replied, no way, we're closed. If you're closed, lock the goddamn door and put a closed sign up! Otherwise, the way to keep local customers coming back is through friendly service, not from chasing people away with cash in their hands. I'm done with this place. Unless you really like a heaping helping of pretentiousness served with your order, I would advise you to skip it as well. read more

My girl and I come here for breakfast just about every weekend because it kicks so much ass. Mountains of crispy, delicious bacon, perfect eggs, amazing greens and the best breakfast burrito in town. My second trip to Sweetsalt I ordered the Shrimp Po Boy. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and of respectable size (25 ct per lb?). However when I think Po Boy I think The South. I think New Orleans. I think Fried. These shrimp are not fried and this is definitely a California version of the sandwich. I'd urge you to go with the Short Rib Roll instead which I enjoyed on my first trip. For my next trip I'm targeting the $15 Maine Lobster Roll that I spied written on the chalkboard menu and the staff said should be available all summer. I had my first lobster roll in Maine 3 years ago and eat them any chance I get. The Hollywood restaurant Hungry Cat has one. I'm eager to try Sweetsalt's. read more

i'm a fan of this place for a quick, healthy meal. they have a lot of options, with rotating specials and soups. i personally did the make my own salad (with DUCK, YOU GUYS!) and really enjoyed it. i will say, the prices can be a bit high if you're not careful. it can get pretty crowded, as it's not a big place, and it's order and pay at the register and get a number for your food style. read more

Aaaaaah! We've been looking for a place that serves really good quality healthy salads and sandwiches (Let's face it, L.A. doesn't have much of this)... We found it... well, by recommendation from a friend. Finally a place that sells delicatessen type food in a gorgeous classy cafe environment and doesn't charge an arm and a leg for it. For far less than you would pay at Arts Deli, and MUCH tastier, we had a big REFRESHING 'Hearts of Palm' salad to share (with beautiful contrasting slices of Grapefruit and other citrus fruits among fresh mixed lettuce leaves, heirloom tomatoes some small sprigs of Cilantro and of course Hearts of Palm, whatever that is? But Yum, so tasty!). I had a Serrano & Fig Baguette. Oh gosh, delectable! Simple, but genius! And of course my Wife chose the Sweetsalt BLT. She loves BLT's and this was among the best she has tried anywhere! Great atmosphere. Beautiful decor. Nice staff. Great business model. Small quaint little cafe with a high turn over of clientele and because of this, if the place is packed, which often it is, you don't have to wait long for a table, and even if you do, its WELL WORTH IT! This was perhaps one of the best meals of my life, no joke. It was hands down the best lunch I've ever had. I ordered the Lavender Duck Confit sandwich. I've never been a duck person, but I felt adventurous. I got it through the recommendation of the server. When the food arrived to the table, I took a bite of the sandwich and almost immediately had a foodgasm. I'd never had that flavor combination before. I took my time with each bite to savor the moment. I'm a fat dude, so usually I wolf down my food. This was different. Each bite needed attention. I then took a sip of my rose lemonade. Let me tell you that this is the perfect flavor combination with the Lavender Duck Confit. That lemonade with that sandwich = unbelievable. I can't stress enough how important those two items are together. The side salad that came with the sandwich was also incredible. I have no idea what that dressing was, but it was perfect. Quite honestly, it is my new favorite dressing and it kills me that I don't know what it is. Lastly came the dessert ...the Fat Bottom Cake. This was like a tour of the tastebuds. It has toasted whipped cream, banana cream, chocolate cream, and a peanut butter cookie crust. Now, I may have gotten some of those ingredients wrong. But my girlfriend and I shared a slice and it was the perfect dessert after a perfect meal. First came the cool sweet, then the cream, the banana next, after that the chocolate, then the saltiness of the crust. I think I was moaning while eating it. Tried this place for the first time. Got the Breakfast Sandwich on Ciabatta and Truffled Proscuito and Fig Sandwich to go and waited a short time. Service: quick and polite ;) Place: open space, good for small groups or to sit by yourself;) Food: The Ciabatta sandwich was ok. Bread was soft and pesto sauce is ok, the bacon was chewy. This sandwich is too close to the Starbucks Gouda Breakfast sandwich :( but way more expensive! The Proscuito sandwich was forgettable ;( it sounds great and the combination of items is meant to go well together but the bread was really hard- maybe it's meant to be? And the Proscuito was chewy amd tasted gamey and hard in parts. I imagine if it wasn't cooked or grilled which makes it crispy-like... it might taste fresher. The arugula didn't hold well and the amount of fig jam was unnoticeable. I won't be getting either of these again. I also got a Lavender Vanilla Latte which was ok. Tasted like roasted (or slightly burned) lavender with sweet hint of vanilla. I hoped this would be a place to go to for breakfast but for the prices I really expected it to surprise me in some pleasant ways. The braised short rib roll with onion confit is excellent. The black forest ham & gruyere cheese and the turkey, bacon & avocado sandwiches are good but mainly serve to make me realize I could've had the short rib roll. The sandwiches come with a "salad" that is either the world's smallest salad or it's largest garnish. It's the amount you'd have after you've eaten your salad at the exact same moment the waiter says, "Are you done?" The red velvet cookie and the chocolate chip cookie with peanut butter filling are excellent, but I'm not sure worth the $4 each. In a city full of fast food and chain restaurants, it's nice to see a place that tries to be different and takes pride in what they do. read more

What a perfect way for this salad aficionado to celebrate the noon hour. I've never seen such an enticing and eccentric list of options for a personalized salad--pulled duck meat, roasted beets, mini artichokes, candied pecans, goat cheese, grilled corn cut from the cob, heart of palm, grapes, and so on. This says nothing of their dressing selection, which includes a light, aromatic truffle vinaigrette I am madly in love with (especially with that duck). If you're as liberal with your meat and cheese ingredients as you are with your, um, social leanings, as I am, definitely build your own salad. The chopped salad, for example--surprisingly leafy and healthy. It's well worth ordering your lunch ahead of time and paying for it in the back of the shop if you're crunched for time, though this means you'll miss out on the big blackboard of daily specials and soups (lobster rolls and mushroom miso soup, for example). I also love going in to the shop to order so I can give in to the temptation of Zapp's potato chips and their chocolate bread pudding. Men, if I were single, this is the kind of place I would be very impressed to be brought to on a first or second date... read more

Food review: Best BLT ever! Seriously, I didn't think I would ever rave about a BLT. But I've tried almost everything on the Sweet Salt menu and I keep going back to the simple BLT. The Shrimp Po Boy and the Duck Lavendar (yeah!) sandwiches are pretty awesome too. The bread pudding dessert was delicious as well. Props to whomever sources their soda for introducing me to Izzie's (yeah grapefruit, clementine and blueberry!) and all the new brands of chips that I can't even remember but have shaken me out of my Lay's doldrums. Location review: Parking is easy which is a plus in LA. Finding a table isn't very easy. That's from the fact that the place got more popular than I think they thought it would be so the dining area isn't as big as it should be. So I'd recommend getting your food to go, unless you want to fight Valley hipsters to the death for a table. read more

I wish I could wave a magic wand to end complaining about crowds on Yelp. If a place is crowded, that's generally because people enjoy the food and keep returning. So, if you had trouble finding a seat, or the line was long...you can't really fault Sweetsalt. I think for their limited space they actually do a phenomenal job with crowd control and efficiency (self-serve ice tea and water, some communal tables, etc.) YES Sweetsalt gets crowded at peak hours. YES it is delicious. Just because something is crowded doesn't automatically make it "overrated" because some minor thing inconvenienced you. The duck confit sandwich is one of the most multifaceted meals between two pieces of bread I've ever had. All the elements have a place and a purpose. Strong recommend. The chicken and bacon lettuce cups are also delicious and unique. Totally unlike any asian-style lettuce wraps I've ever had, and the sharp cheddar cheese and fresh avocado go great with the bacon. The salads here are knock-your-socks off delicious. Some of my favorite salads anywhere. I've tried 3 of them so far - The Feta and Mint, the Spicy Asian, the Pear and Walnut. All 3 are outstandingly delicious. The lettuces and vegetables are always consistently fresh and crisp, the toppings perfectly balanced, and the salads not over or underdressed. The portions are also HUGE, and a good value for your money. They're excellent to-go as well. I have to give this place 5 stars just for the quality and deliciousness of their salads, but there is a caveat tot his review, though. Their sandwiches, I think, are not as good (or as good of a value). I tried the Short Rib sandwich, which I thought was pretty tasty, but definitely on the heavy side. The meat is so loaded down with juices that it gets soggy pretty fast, and the soft bun it's on doesn't hold up well enough. They're also a little small too, so I'm not sure if they're worth the prices. Also - we tried all of their macarons, and they're just eh to me. They all taste kind of the same. Went here today for lunch and had a very nice experience. First of all Tyreek (I think that's how you spell it) was THE nicest guy ever....every restaurant should be so lucky to have someone like him at the front. I was having a hard time deciding what to order and I asked him about the Lavender Duck Confit. He explained to me that when they were conceptualizing the restaurant, this was their signature item. It was special. I was sold. BUT I didn't want bread. No prob. He suggested I get it on a bed of arugula. Done. You can also customize a salad which is what my friend did. She got mixed greens with cucumber, avocado and salmon. Looked good. We took our # and sat down at a table against the back wall, admired the cute decor and had a nice time people watching. Food came and my salad was really good. I was expecting a little more of the lavender flavor. But it was fine. The goat cheese and honey came on the side and I appreciated that because I think it may have been too rich for me otherwise. I enjoyed the salad but will def try something new next time. For dessert I had to have a rose macaroon (to go) and I got the olive oil cake with Raspberries and Rosemary. My friend ordered a slice of the caramel pumpkin cake. I did not expect so much crap crammed into a little store front, which is a good thing. I don't watch Top Chef, nor do I care about any show that isn't Magnum P.I., so the draw about the famous chef had no effect on me. I had the Short rib sandwich while my lunch buddy had the Turkey/bacon/avocado roll (you Californians and your obsession with avocado. I don't get it.) Both were good. The short rib sandwich was great but I found myself wanting maybe three bites more. Stuff some more beef on that puppy and let me grub one out dudes, don't be stingy. The turkey bacon whatevercado was bigger and simple, but the bacon on there was the bidness. Small salad served with it was satisfying too. This place is rad. The only downside is that it's small, like super small, so if you are planning on sitting and eating instead of doing take out, don't go during the lunch rush, I believe 12-2 generally. But wow, delish. I had the short rib roll, after reading all the great reviews about it, and it was definitely as amazing as described. Little story, the seating is tight and when we went, we shared the big picnic table with a random stranger who sat across from us. He was super nice and he had apparently been a bunch of times so we started talking about what he liked and what we had ordered while we were waiting. When I told him I ordered the short rib roll, he was like, "You're the big winner. That is seriously the best sandwich, you're gonna love it!" Apparently it was one of those things where even if you go back and promise you're going to try something new because the menu is so varied and awesome, you end up ordering it again because it's that good. And it was. I also tried the chicken pesto sandwich, fantastic pesto, and just great overall. And the extreme cookies, yikes! Upon recommendation from the girl who worked there, I tried the apple pie cookie, and holy YES it was ridiculous. I couldn't eat it in once sitting because it was so rich and good. It's not a cheap cookie, but you really could share it with someone and it's so worth it. However, in that same token, the food is extremely affordable. I can not say enough about this place....there is a reason certain chefs get on Top Chef and Alex Eusebio does not disappoint! The food here is unreal! I dream about the grilled chicken, bacon, and corn lettuce wrap! And the turkey avocado sandwich is one of the best in town! My only problem with the food so far is that I have been unable to try more of it because I keep getting the same thing! That is not a bad problem to have, but I sense I am missing out on other killer dishes. I have to admit it is a tad pricey, but worth every penny. Wish I had more pennies so I could eat here more.... My only complaints are minor and not worthy of deducting stars: 1. Be prepared to wait in line at lunch...people seem to be order challenged here for some reason. I have never seen people take so long to order lunch anywhere before...it's like they want to have a full conversation before deciding...let's move it along people. 2. The place is tiny so getting a table can be difficult. Not to mention the style is not to my taste, but that's neither here nor there. Here's the trick though if you don't want to eat there...order online, tell them what time and when you get there, the order is ready! Oh and to the people whining about the wait, go to subway and shut up...less of a line for the rest of us. You're probably the same ones that take 10 minutes to figure out your order anyway. Parking is my biggest gripe about this place since there's not many around. The sandwiches and salad here is pretty good but a bit over priced. I had their lobster sandwich which I don't recommend for $17. I tasted more bread and mayonnaise than lobster. I did enjoy their Shrimp Po Boy with chimichurri sauce! The oft-raved about short rib roll came as a bit of a disappointment. The braised short rib was tougher than expected, and far from falling apart in my mouth. The sandwich included a fair share of grease, but luckily it was paired with a really nice spring salad that helped to cut the grease. Tried the caramel brownie, and found it to be pretty dry. Fortunately, the center contained a little liquid pool of caramel that worked well with the brownie and made that little circle taste delicious. I think if the caramel had been spread around a bit, or if the brownie wasn't as dry, I would have enjoyed it more. The cashier was friendly, and the restaurant has a gorgeous looking open space and layout. Order at the counter and take a seat! read more

Perhaps my expectations were too high? I ordered the lobster roll. It was kind of bland, and had globs of dressing on top of the lobster that was already dressed. There was a good ratio of lobster to bread. It came with a side salad, which wasn't really a salad, it was lettuce tossed in dressing. Very bland also. I ordered a tea to go with my lobster roll. My total for the lobster roll and tea almost added up to $20. Too much for lunch. Perhaps if it came with a better side, something of more substance than just lettuce? The salads looked good. I'd have to say my food and experience here was average, and I mean VERY average. Food normally makes me a happy girl and when somethings really good I'll even do a little foodie dance. But this place actually sucked all the joy out of me...I got the breakfast sandwich and it's something you can't exactly make badly, and it's not that it didn't taste good...it just instilled pure disappointment in me for how "blah" it was. Not really a lot of flavor, and very underwhelming. Let's not even talk about the pistachio "macaron" I had..it was as crunchy as a shortbread cookie, I didn't know it was possible to make and sell a macaron that dry to be honest, it's actually quite impressive depending on how you look at it. It also tasted nothing like pistachio. I'm giving this place a 2/5 stars because I don't think it deserves a 1/5...perhaps I just ordered the wrong things? I don't think I'll be back. read more

Came here today for the first time and was quite excited since they're rated quite well on yelp. The guy taking our order didn't seem too thrilled to be there and wasn't very helpful when I was asking about the gluten free options. He answer a few questions but didn't really go above and beyond to make suggestions. I finally just ordered the omelette with micro greens and it wasn't that great, pretty bland and nothing special. So in part I liked it but in another I noticed it was rather small. I don't eat like an animal so don't think you'll get a large portion here. Another day, another sandwich. This time I tried the bbq chicken sandwich with bleu cheese and bbq sauce. This one had large pieces of chicken which I liked but it didn't have much on the flavor side. It's not a guys sandwich OK. I swear I don't have a large appetite. I'm calling it like I see and taste it. It didn't move the meter for me. Oh, did I forget to mention that all their sandwiches are over 10 bucks?! HA! They do come with a mixed green salad and a thimble full of dressing. Desserts. This they have and are very tasty. Red velvet cookies.. vanilla cookies... both delicious. Macaroons too but they change it up every now and again so they might not be there. The best is the vanilla cookie. They actually have two cookies and put vanilla filling in the middle. So good. Bread pudding! Only three dollars! They have this at the end of the counter in the refrigerated section. I got mine cold but would advise you to have them heat it up for a few seconds. It's texture is like tres leches but more solid, nothing bready about it. It holds up. Not Masa level bread pudding but good. This is an official 3 star restaurant for me. I wish I had never Tweeted about this place. Now too many people know. Sweetsalt used to be small, quaint, occupying only one business space and having only one tiny but tidy unisex bathroom. Once upon a time, while seated and waiting for your order to be delivered, you could easily pretend you were in France. Not anymore. Sweetsalt has grown considerably. It now occupies two business spaces and has properly Americanized his & hers bathrooms. Not that it matters a lot because you can't beat the food. And it's the food that counts the most, right? I had the prosciutto and fig sandwich. It's mouth sex. Brie cheese, fig with honey, sandwiched in a traditional French baguette. Simple yet amazing. The atmosphere is casual. The people are what you would expect in the Burbank/Toluca Lake area. A fun combination of studio people and actor/writer/producer wannabes. Love this place. read more

Sweetsalt has expanded since my last visit in 2010. (That's right, my irritation over the limited seating and long wait times for orders was such that I didn't return for 2 and a half years.) It's twice the size now with maybe 3 times the seating. HUGE win. This time around I opted for a Grilled Vegetable Panini. They didn't have the usual bread so they put it on ciabatta, which was excellent. I had a bite of my sister's Steak & Brie sandwich which was also good. We split a beet-and-burrata salad as well which was delicious. The lemon strawberry cake didn't really taste lemon-y -- fine by me but it was somewhat false advertising. The taro macaron was awesome. If you know any Filipina girls, bring them a taro macaron and tell them it's ube. They'll love you for it. read more

I feel mixed emotions about this place. First, it is a great addition to the Toluca Lake area and within walking distance to my house. Second, some of the food shines, while other dishes are just meh. I hate the let down feeling when you pay above average prices for what you hope to be an amazing sandwich and it just doesn't deliver, so I have to give three stars. The good: the chicken and bacon lettuce cups - absolutely amazing, lightly dressed and delicious to those trying to follow a more paleo/crossfit diet. The tomato soup - have such deep flavors and hint of heat. The bad: the lobster roll. Maybe I am spoiled by the many summers I spent in Maine and New England. I personally did not enjoy this place because our service wasn't great and I think the food is overpriced for what it is. The first time I went there was during a week day for lunch. Both the service and food were okay, but my salad was bland and highly overpriced. I went a second time on a Saturday morning and waited 20 minutes with no service. We tried ordering at the counter, but they told us that someone would come to our table. We tried asking a waiter for help, but he never came back. I see a lot of great reviews on here so my bad experiences are probably not the norm. I recommend being patient. read more
