This intimate gastropub is a great place to dine by candlelight. The wine list is a bit limited and the selections rather quirky, but there are plenty of cocktails. The short menu is heavy on gastropub staples like pork and beef cheeks, but they also have a good hamburger, and a fairly sophisticated scallop entree. My favorite was the chicken sandwich, which has been voted among the top 25 in the country, and with good reason. A think, succulent slab of white meat is sealed in a wonderful crust without being greasy at all. Served with house made pickles on a bun, with fresh from the fryer crispy fries. Non-touristy In The Tourist Zone I've never been a fan of FQ restaurants as they tend to be pricey and touristy, but Sylvain was something completely unique and refreshing for that area. The atmosphere was casual and romantic with soft lighting and an old school Nawlins vibe. There's also a heated courtyard outside. The service was outstanding. The presentation of our meals and cocktails was impressive for such a casual place. The Steak Frite was the best I've had since Le Relais de l'Entrecôte. read more

We dropped in for a quick bite because we were famished. Cool place and nice menu and I thought "I'd like to come back and eat a proper full meal" beyond the quick snacks were we're grabbing. But charging $4 x 2 for two slices of tomatoes and some shredded iceberg lettuce for "dressings" on the burger and fried chicken sandos is BS. And then another $1 for a few slices of pickles. Silly. Absolutely, positively, without a doubt a can't-miss spot in New Orleans as a whole, and especially the French Quarter. Of course - we visited during the south's insane cold spell, but the heated posts by the host stand was welcome, as well as how much heat it threw onto the couch out there. I'm sure in warmer times the outdoor space is positively sublime. If you have a bit of a wait, definitely peruse the drink menu for a pre-dinner warm up. The cocktails are excellently developed, and the wine list is considered but not outrageously expensive. A big big plus in my book. The restaurant is well designed, dark, but the brick and period pictures set the scene well. Food wise - we stopped into Sylvain the day after the also incredible Jaques-Imos, and I have to say Sylvain topped it, potentially providing me with one of the best meals I've EVER had. That would be the ratatouille. Such a simple dish, created and recreated time and time again, but something about Sylvain's preparation just absolutely CRUSHED it. Salty/savory, just had me wanting more every bite. If you find yourself looking for a spot to eat in the French Quarter, go to Sylvain. It's not overly stuffy, but you can go in dressed up if you want. It's a wonderful inbetween that hits every spot for what makes a good restaurant to me. I can not wait to return. read more

Not worth the hype. A chicken sandwich at a fancy restaurant? Okay, but at least make it amazing. It was not. The charred cabbage wedge on a bed of puréed cauliflower was very nicely done but the side of "fried chicken" was the same cutlet on the sandwich- I expected a real piece of chicken . The food in New Orleans has been pretty awful this restaurant was spectacular. The service was outstanding but the food was out of this world perfect. I had the wagyu Burger which was one of the best burgers I ever had. My wife had the stuffed flounder which was perfectly cooked and we complimented the chief chef who is just brilliant. He was kind enough to give us a pecan pie dessert which surprisingly was not too sweet or full of sugar it was fantastic. And the cocktails were just unbelievably good we had the old historical cocktails just mind blowingly good. We had never heard of this hidden gem and it is well hidden near the cathedral, across the street from Doris. We tried it out and were delighted from the start. They have an antique American theme with a French twist. It was super hot that. Hint and we were in the courtyard but we had a wonderful time. The staff was super kind and everything we put in our mouths was amazing. We had a great time and can't wait to visit again. Cool little spot. The dim setting inside is best for couples. I had the pork shoulder plate wife had the bolognese. Both were good but nothing amazing. We also had the cast iron cornbread and fries. I was expecting the cornbread to wow me but it really didn't. I actually think the fries were better. Had a great fresh garlic flavor to them. Best meal I had in New Orleans. It wasn't New Orleans cuisine, but it still made the top of the list. Their "Southern Antipasti" app changed my life. It is basically a charcuterie board, but way better. I'm from LA, and I take my charcuterie seriously, very seriously.... I was blown away. I wish I could eat this every night. This is one of the first bars I stopped in coming to New Orleans and I'm happy I did. Initially came here after a friend told me he had some Pappy at a reasonable price; unfortunately, they did not have it when I went. That said, I still had a great Sazarac a decent steak, and a decent dessert. Sylvain struck me as a real cocktail bar, the type where bartenders are closer to mixologists than the beercap pulling folk you might be use to seeing. They are working fast and they love what they do. I started with a Sazarac and couldn't be happier as it was my first and it was delicious. I followed it up with a hangar steak. It was just ok--not the best, not the worst I ever tried. I finished off with a Briar Rose (cocktail) and a chocolate pie dessert thing. Chocolate pie thing was pretty good, but this isn't something unique nor is it gonna rock your socks. The Briar Rose was a miss for me, but I'm chalking that up to the fact that the combination of flavors just wasn't my thing. Maybe for you it will be, but I would have ordered a second Sazarac or an Old Fashioned in it's place if I had tried it before. While drinking, a guy proposed to his girlfriend. The staff was really quick to help the guy get pictures and made sure the moment was special. Sylvain is a great bar to stop in and get a proper drink. Food and ambiance were great. The dim lighting and candles give it a special, romantic vibe. The food - had cabbage salad, cornbread and beef cheeks and all were excellent. The 3 stars is for the service, we were dining this past Sunday and had a 9 pm reservation. Our waitress told us when we sat the kitchen was closes at 9pm so they would appreciate it if we out our order in quickly. Really? Your kitchen closes at the same time you allow a reservation to be booked? That was odd but we obliged. Then around 10pm the restaurant started to pick up all the tables and chairs around us while we were still mid-dinner, this definitely killed the vibe. The waitress was obviously eager to get off because she came up to my boyfriend who was taking his time enjoying his meal and said, "what is going on here?", looking at his plate, insinuating he was taking too long eating. So then we felt the need to scurry out of there. One of the reasons we booked Sylvain was because they are open later and we just came from the airport and knew we were going to be starving. It was beyond annoying that we got pushed out the restaurant. They close at 10 pm on Sundays but probably shouldn't let patrons book a 9pm dinner if you can't accommodate staff for a normal 90 minute dinner. read more

Sylvain is a small, rustic eatery tucked away in the French Quarter right by St. Louis cathedral. Located on a block that features retail and restaurants, one enters the establishment down a long, narrow "alley" that runs along the side of the main dining room. Well worn wooden floors, exposed beams and dim lighting set the mood for this cozy dining room which features southern American fare. The copper topped bar is a favorite spot because of the great service and the ability to spy all of the lovely cocktails they make. Bloody Mary's featuring a pickled okra garnish are always a crowd pleaser. There is additional seating in the courtyard which is just out back. On cool spring nights it is tough to get a table out here but worth the wait. Tropical plants and an older brick wall make it an inviting spot. Open for lunch on Friday, dinner most nights and a brunch on the weekend, Sylvain always attracts a crowd. Favorites on the menu include the Chick Sylvain sa which - a southern fried chicken breast served on a homemade bun with pickles - and fries. So happy we stumbled on Sylvain while in New Orleans. We were looking for a laid back, semi-dressy restaurant and Sylvain did not disappoint. The ambiance is perfect. You're surrounded by trees, string lights, and brick walls. The hostess and our waitress were both incredibly friendly. The cocktails were generously strong and well made. All of the food we tried was amazing as well. Out of the appetizers, the cornbread with cayenne butter was probably the group favorite. The spicy butter offered a nice kick to the sweet bread. Seating can be limited in the air-conditioned front area, however they do have some inside bar seating, and a number of table options outside in their courtyard space. Food: The eggplant burrata came with deep fried eggplant slices, and a healthy portion of burrata with sliced jalapeño. Great combo. The smoked fish fritters were slightly larger than a golf ball in size, were light and fluffy inside, and sat in a shallow bowl with a chili oil broth. It wasn't too fishy, but it was smoky. Bolognese pappardelle was delicious with homemade noodle, and a hearty beefy sauce. The pan fried pork shoulder were two pork medallions over collard greens and grits. Hearty, so be ready to share or take it home. Service: We were out on the courtyard, and perhaps that's what lent to the slower pace. We didn't mind. We ordered drinks, then decided on the apps which came out quickly and we finished before we even ordered any entrees. Server was reasonably attentive, and we got what we needed when we asked for it. We waited 20-minutes for our 1st round of cocktails and an hour for appetizers. Twice, I had to get up from our table and go find our waiter to request service. It was frustrating, especially since we were a large party running a four-figure tab. I'm hoping we just had a crappy, inattentive server and this was not reflective of the overall service culture of the restaurant. All in all, would recommend for the amazing food! It's a good spot for date nights. I came here for dinner during Mardi Gras with my friends. It has a unique entrance. We had to wait around 15 minutes to get seated which isn't bad at all. Our sever was gracious. I got the chicken sandwich with fries. My friends the burger. They loved their burger and it was juicy and cooked just right. My sandwich was pretty decent. It was quite flavorful and the pickle added the extra flavor. However, I wasn't a big fan of their fries. It was a good soggy. It was a good experience but their food didn't stand out to me. We had a nice meal here on a weeknight. We came pretty early for dinner; pretty much right at opening. We made reservations just in case. It filled up pretty quickly as there was a conference in town. It did get a bit loud; I think it has to do with the acoustics in the dining area. Our server nice and attentive. He checked on us frequently and made good suggestions regarding meals. I went with the bolognese which had homemade pasta. It was good! It was very flavorful. My wife had a salad. A good number of beers and wine to choose from along with a full bar. The large group next to us ordered a number of different cocktails. Neat spot to try out! It's got quite a good mix of food here; from local, to international to international with a local twist. I'd like to come back and try some other items. read more

I have been here numerous times in the past but never again. We had a reservation for four, asked to sit outside (weather was pleasant), were told no (even though there were empty tables) and instead seated inside right beneath the AC blowing so cold that it required putting on jackets. One member of our party didn't have a phone and asked for a paper menu. We were told no. The server, dressed in a pullover hooded sweatshirt (with the hood on) and sweatpants recommended an item that wasn't even on the digital menu we were required to use. It was, however, on the paper menu they begrudgingly and eventually provided. The fried chicken sandwich was about 2x3 inches with a drizzle of sauce, two pickle slices on a dry bun. The shoestring fries were instantly cold under the blowing AC. I asked for condiments they never brought. When it was mentioned that they were cold and the condiments never showed up I was condescendingly told that "we will give you a 'small fries' discount. They deducted $10 from a $311 bill. When we declined dessert we were asked if we would like plastic to-go cups for our wine (!!!). We are not tourists. We live in New Orleans, we host air Bnb's and we will never go back ourselves, nor will we recommend it to our friends or guests. I had to give one star to post but it deserves zero. read more

Nobody told Sylvain - the pan fried pork shoulder with vinegary greens, tender grits and a mustard jus ($23) stole the show as my best entree during our vacation. A modestly sized Brussels sprouts with apples, hazelnuts and loads of grana padano is a winner, if a bit steep for $11 tag. While it doesn't have the avant garde flair and glassware of Cane and Table, Sylvain won the drinks game on this trip. Excellent food was a bonus. Quite saddened and offended by the service we received here. The bartender asked for our ids and I made a joke that my wedding ring should be proof enough. Maybe not the funniest joke, but the bartender immediately turned sour and said, Ver batim "we don't have to serve you here" as a minority visiting the south, I couldn't help but to feel this might be racially charged. I tried to ignore the comment and we got our drinks. As the night went on, my friend and I chatted by the bar, and apparently we offended someone else and the hostess came to us and told us to quiet down, while they profusely apologized to the two Caucasian patrons next to us. It was unreal. Mind you, It was a bar, and we were not being particularly loud. Then she kept giving us an unwelcoming stare and rolling her eyes at us. I understand maybe this is a more "high end" bar, but we were being respectful. It honestly felt like we were in the wrong neighborhood. It's interesting to me that the last review was a man who brought 27 "rowdy" people from a bachelor party and it was no problem. But they had an immediate issue with us. I find that review hard to believe. Unfortunately, this was our last stop in New Orleans and it left a bad taste for the restaurant and the city for us. Race related or not, it was a very unpleasant experience. I can't help but think there are similar cases of the establishment having a superiority complex against certain clienteles. I urge everyone to report similar experiences. I will submit mine to the local naacp in case incidents like these happen again. [In response to your comment] While defending your diverse hirings, you never care to explain for the bartender's comment (which is word for word the truth) or the waitress's rudeness. Your employee's actions spoke louder than your words. Instead of being defensive, maybe it's wise to take a look at the staff, and the culture you have created. If it's not racism, then the problem is an unfriendly, rude staff. So basically your defense is, "we are not racist, we are just very rude." read more

Very good friend whose judgment I trust suggested that this small spot in the heart of the French district was worth a visit. It's quiet and unassuming on the front and easy to walk past or overlook. But don't do it. Step inside and the service is great and welcoming - though very busy so make sure you make a reservation or come early. I had a fantastic jungle juice cocktail and a cold beer but the best part of the meal was a really simple house salad with cashews, strawberries, goat cheese, and a very light tart dressing. My entrée was the scallops dish sitting on a thin bedding of roasted Brussel sprouts and Bubba ghannouj. The setting inside is reminiscent of a calm courtyard in someone's house.
