I was hungry... I had just driven about 3 hours to get into town, checked into my hotel (which is also amazing) and started to try and find food. Several places were closed for the day already and I saw this little corner place that still had the Open sign on. Burgers? Sure, why not, that should fill me up and it sure did! I ordered the regular Old Fashioned (no cheese), side of fries and a drink. Everyone was very friendly and helpful as I've never been to this place to eat before let alone this part of the state! The burger was perfectly cooked at medium and very juicy and delicious! Fried were good, not great but the burger was the star of the meal anyway. But I will say the fries were good once I dipped them in the dripping juices and sauce from the burger. But it was a very hearty burger and after a long drive, really hit the spot! If I'm ever in this area again or see another Sylvester's I will definitely make it a point to visit and try a different burger. Favorite dish: Old Fashioned with no cheese. Cute little restaurant with a very nice outdoor dining area in the back. They're special was Local caught black cod with chips. I love fish and chips so I thought it would be very fresh because it was Local caught. French fries or delicious! My husband, I took one bite of the cod and left the rest. I came in today with a plan to surprise my grandson with his birthday burger but we were getting it all to go for 6 people. I brought my two little grandsons on with me after school let out. First I was prepared because I lived in Atas 28 years and I knew the problem this location has with the middle school and high school kids hanging out here after school. They drive away customers and take up all the seating. Today it was raining in a freak May 28 storm so all the teens were inside. Worst case scenario and it's already normally bad. They even stand in the door and block you from entering as they are talking to another one walking by. I just made my way up the door and pushed forward not intending to be deterred. Inside the teens were taking up fully at least 3 tables for 4 people, mostly boys and there was an old couple in the corner trying to eat a meal that looked very uncomfortable. The teens, none of them had food ordered or on the table. All they do is buy soda or take it as they knew the cashier young girl. I wonder if they even pay for it. I saw her hand them cups I've seen other reviews with people complaining like me about the place being overrun with non paying customers. They will stand in the way too and block the drink machines, door access or whatever. They also have no manners and will not move or say excuse me or anything. All tough guys. lol. I had to kinda push my way through to get to the register. I told my little grandsons to quickly sit down at the only empty table and wait for me while I ordered to go. The girl at the counter was sweet and helpful which was a relief. Note: They give you a discount if you pay with cash. Our order cane up pretty quick because we were the only paying customers left since the old couple already had their food. The place was 100% full with squatters taking all the tables and management needs to step up and post signs. If not dining please move along and afk them to get out of the chairs and leave. !!!!!!! When weather is nice outside even more hoards are out there and it's difficult for families or couples to enjoy a meal. We got home with the food for our 9 year olds birthday dinner and the fries were soggy greasy. I even put them in my big air fry oven to warm and crisp them but they remained soggy. The onion rings were crispy. The 3 large tri tip salads were pretty good but I can only eat lean tri tip. Most of it was not edible for me. The boys liked their kids burgers. Dan had the 1/3 lb bacon burger with cheddar and he liked it. I don't typically review hamburger joints, but since I was in Atascadero for the weekend, I was really craving a burger and I'm so glad I found this place. I believe it's in their Downtown district, but don't quote me, but when it comes to hamburgers, I know it's always best to find the local spots instead of the national chains. The moment I walked in, you could tell it had a full on local vibe. Pictures of the customers were all over the walls, including the ceiling, and I thought it was great. The employee behind the counter greeted me with a smile, helped me navigate their menu, even struck up a quick but good conversation. I went with a turkey burger and really enjoyed it. A lot of times they can be pretty dry, but this was juicy and had a great flavor. If you want a "real" hamburger, lol, they had a huge number of options. The fries were really good as well. A casual, older spot...ketchy decorated with funny sayings and free "birthday" photos of customers, I mean, everywhere. It's good for lunch, but not-so-much for dinner. $19 1/2 pound burgers, wow. No fries. Well, welcome to the new America. However, they do have daily specials, and sometimes they have 50% off...but on a small menu with smaller burgers. Speaking about price...ouch. Burger, chili fries, and a draft beer for $40. No...no...no...not again. The $19 burger had a cheap sysco/market white bread seeded bun. Not a fan. But the patty and stuff were really good with the exception of the limp bacon, evidently cooked earlier. The $5.50 chili fries were small, chili good. But, I could skip next time. I am a huge mushroom fan, and these were the most incredible sauteed mushrooms (and a whole lot of them). If I have to nitpick, I'd prefer the burger to be a bit less well done. But overall it was delicious! Husband had the pastrami (solid choice), and kiddo was elated with his hand-dipped corn dog and fries. The bonus for him is that his kid's meal came with a free frisbee! I love the old-school decor with photos featuring guests over the years, and local memorabilia and fun stuff to look at while you're waiting that food, served hot and juicy. While we typically go to a "nice" dinner before live theater performances, the extended family recently decided to head to Sylvester's instead. It was a great social environment, felt more relaxed than the fancy restaurant. My favorite burger: Hana! The vegetarians in our group are happy to have three burger/sando options plus the salad option and various fried items including mushrooms, and zuke, and of course onion rings, fries, sweet potato fries. Vegan options are also on the menu. Not sure if there's anything gluten-free, but that would be a really nice addition. Only ding: Price - these are expensive burgers, but they're big; you wont' go away hungry. Even more frustrating, though, is why a soda costs $4. I mean....come on, man. read more

This place was so good and intriguing we had to come back the next day! Starting off, you walk in and the place is fully decorated with pictures of people on the wall that have completed the 5 lb burger challenge ($69.95, free if you can finish in 30 mins) to people celebrating their birthdays. The workers were all very nice and attentive. The outdoor patio had multiple table/bench seating for parties of at least 6 each. The inside has plenty of room as well. My friend had gotten the philly and he said it was really good (although being his first time, it set the bar high for him) and my other friend and i got the desperado 1/4 lb along with sweet potatoe fries and regular fries, and MAN everything hit so well. The burger was filling and the fries were so crispy. The next day my homies came back because they were interested in the seasonal special shake "pumpkin spice shake" and the mushroom bites. My friend tried the grilled chicken sandwich, and you can tell it was freshly grilled. We had also gotten the strawberry shake and more sweet potato and regular fries. Idk if they home make their shakes but it sure tasted like it. You can see fresh blended fruit in the strawberry shake and you could taste it in the pumpkin spice shake. This place just hits the stomach in the best way possible. I also like how everyday of the week they have specials (see the pics) perfect for people trying to save money. I've been coming to Sylvester's for a few years now (both the locations in Los Osos and Atascadero, I haven't gone to the location in Oceano) and I can definitely say that they're a pretty good spot for burgers and salads! The store is located near city hall, and has plenty of seating around. The staff is pretty chill and laid back, and very helpful - both on the phone and in person :) . OKAY THE FOOD: I usually get either the desperado burger or the california burger, but for today's visit, I had gotten the 1/3 lb. California burger with regular french fries. It was pretty delicious, however I was in a big food coma after this meal. I love their strawberry shake here, but sometimes the pineapple shake is perfect for a super hot day. My boyfriend loves their tri tip salad and their sweet potato fries here, so I also recommend it! I ordered my burger in the smallest size (3 sizes available for all burgers) and it was a great size. The Sylvester sauce was tasty as well. I've been to Sylvester's multiple times. This was my second time getting the California burger for my birthday entrée. You can get a free burger if you go in on the day. I got mine without cheese but it was delicious with the just avocado, veggie garnish and specific sauce. The bund are particularly yummy. - The spot is super casual. They have seating both inside and outside. I got a club soda which I like particularly from the soda fountain, so I was happy. Parking is free and easy around the corner and there is a large restroom on site. - The staff is always very sweet. They are joyful and happy to answer any questions that you have. I've been passing by Sylvesters here in Atascadero and Los Osos for years and finally needed to try it out. Nice cool decorations of pictures and other neat little hand made features. The 2 Associates I spoke to were nice and informative. I asked the associate to get me a typical burger and she asked what kind of cheese and ordered a small fry and small coke. The burger was good and juicy, the bun is big, fries were good but a bit oily for me. Overall it's good to experience Sylvesters and I think it would be better to eat while your there. If your taking out I'd go to Carl's Jr, Burger King or McDonald's, it's cheaper. That's my take. read more

Get ready for a shock because this place is not cheap! $42 for two burgers and one soda with no sides. We sat outside on the expansive patio, and it was a comfortable sunny day. It took at least 25-30 minutes for them to bring out our burgers. Multiple order numbers after ours came out while we were still waiting. Do not be in a hurry here. If you're not rushing to be somewhere, it's worth the wait. I had the Heart Attack burger, served on a bed of lettuce, skipping the bun. It was a 1/3 pound beef patty, fried egg, American cheese, avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato & onion. With a knife and fork, it was quite a meal. My wife enjoyed a black bean patty with similar fixins. The burgers were both excellent and plenty big; we left full and satisfied. I would return here on a day I was feeling both rich, and needing a relaxing meal with plenty of time. Booth tables were sticky and not clean. 2 young ladies behind the counter were very nice but when they weren't busy were on their phones. Perhaps one of them or both could have been wiping down tables. Also just realized, from reading reviews, there is a surcharge if you use credit. We were never told and didn't notice anything posted. Basket of onion rings, $6.95. 2 sodas both the same size, $2.95 but they charged me $1.00 more saying it was a lg. It was the same size as my drink. I don't get it. So I paid cash. At first it was $61. and change but since I pd cash, discounted to $59.49. But get this, I was charged $2.16 transaction fee. WTF for? WTH Sylvester's.
