Sylvia's is the kind of classic, white tablecloth, family-friendly Tex Mex spot I grew up eating at in Texas, and made for a perfect boozy Sunday brunch in the suburbs recently. We stopped in before heading for the airport, and were immediately seated on their pleasant patio. After ordering a couple margaritas (followed by two fresh and satisfying Mexican martinis later on) and their excellent chips and queso, we decided on our entrees. Relieved that breakfast was still being served, she ordered the papas con huevos, whereas I went with the enormous chile relleno plate. The excellent service matched the quality of the food, and we felt well taken care of throughout our meal. I have been coming to Sylvia's for as long as I can remember. I had my gradation celebration at the Woodway location several years ago and have taken cooking classes with Sylvia at the Eldridge location. I love the diversified menu items! I have had the Quail numerous times and have never been disappointed. While Sylvia is famous for her enchiladas I still highly recommended the tamales, caesar salad with jumbo shrimp, tacos al carbon, quail and her famous tender carne asada! I have also ordered the shrimp tacos and requested the Jumbo shrimp for an additional cost topped with their creamy suiza sauce. The classic red tortilla soup is also fanatic and definitely my go to soup for when I'm not feeling well. Overall, the quality of the food is fantastic! Sylvia herself is a very kind and approachable owner that encourages her guests to educate themselves by attending one of her very insightful cooking classes. One final note, the outside patio at the Woodway location is well shaded with fans during the summer and heaters during the winter. It is one of my favorite patios in Houston. While the patio is dog friendly, squirrels are often roaming around the oak trees and other dog owners often walk their dogs around the area so if your dog is easily distracted I would not bring them. read more

Why have I not discovered this gem sooner? My husband won a gift card here which both of us had never heard of this place. We are not in the Woodway or West Houston area too often but it was worth the trip. We went to the Woodway location. If you want to take a road trip around Texas and have the taste of specific regions of Mexico this is your spot. All of the enchiladas are named after towns in Texas....They have a huge variety....I went with the Lubbock which had a nice thick chili gravy and hearty meat in a perfect red sauce with Cheese and onions and refried beans and rice. My husband had the Mole Chicken enchiladas, charro beans and rice and a frozen Margarita.....We enjoyed every last bite and drop.....The plates are made for perfect portions for their enchiladas. the price was not bad either. This review is solely based on the service I have been getting when ordering to-go. I work very close to this location so I always call in my food and ask for a container of limes to put on top of whatever I order. There is a middle aged female waitress/bartender who brings my food out sometimes and is very ugly to me. She ignores me when I speak to her half the time and is very short with me. She will give me two tiny little wedges with literally one drop of juice in each. Today I asked for extra and she proceeded to open the box of limes and told me to take some. With my bare hands?!!! What a nasty woman. For no reason!!! She then took some out of the container with her bare hands. Gross!!! I told her I don't want them if she's gonna touch them. This is ridiculous and unprofessional and flat out greedy. A few slices of lemon is not worth mistreating someone over. I feel a hostility from this woman and now the female manager who works there. The complimentary chips were crunchy and thick. And my favorite part of the meal. The salsa that comes with it was warm but on the runny side. It has a slight kick, but not much. They are Dog friendly on their large patio. I ordered the North of the Border on the staff's recommendation so I could sample several different styles. The first thing that struck me is that they're finger sized enchiladas. At first I was disappointed by that. But after trying them, I didn't mind so much about the size as I didn't really care for any of them in particular. A man in a tie came to explain which enchilada was which. That was helpful. I know which one was the Laguna (crab) one and I also know it is made from real crabs because I got a piece of shell in mine. Staff was very friendly. The place is more upscale than an average taqueria. They got cloth napkins and all. Happy hour ended at 7 pm so I stuck with water since I came at 7:05 pm. Bathroom hasn't been attended to for a while. All trash cans full and overflowing. read more

This was an all around great visit. Upon being seated I was preoccupied looking into my purse and I was immediately served with chips and salsa. I hadn't realized the server was standing next to my table. Their friendly staff was posted around the walls awaiting anyone's needs. Victor, the manager, perused the restaurant interacting and serving guests no less than 5 times during my lunch. As he walked by he watched and listened to staff interactions as well. I ordered salad, spinach enchiladas, rice, and beans. While just starting my salad, my entree arrived. The server offered to return food and keep it warmed until I was ready. Moments after I'd pushed my salad away, my food appeared at table side without having to ask. I've been to several Mexican restaurants before but this was the first time I tasted the freshest farm to table ingredients. The spinach tasted like it was just picked and sautéed and the black beans had true flavor and not popped from a can. 10 I shared this with my teenager and she was not impressed Thank you Sylvia's for dining as it should be!!! read more

Great food and even better service! Purchased Gloria's cookbook on a whim several years ago and finally had a chance to visit the Enchilada Queen's Castle. Not disappointed - it was excellent. The Tex-Mex "gravy" is plate-licking good! GG, my server, was fantastic. Never lacked for anything and when she saw I got a little gravy on my shirt, she brought a glass of club soda over immediately. Two of the managers came over to greet me and check on me. I've been a regular customer of Sylvia's since they opened. The food and service have definitely been slipping over the past few years. We brought family from out of town last Sunday evening. The restaurant was moderately busy but not slammed. Our server took drink orders, making a comment about the fact we weren't drinking alcohol. I asked for club soda and he tried to upsell to Topo Chico. He then disappeared for more than 20 minutes. Our drinks were never refilled except for the iced tea. One of us got the wrong meal, but decided to go ahead and eat it since no one was checking on us. At the end of the meal our server tried to sell us on drinks for dessert, saying beer was good for that. I told him the person to whom he was directing the drinks question couldn't drink because of a medical condition. He promptly brought the check. I didn't want to make a fuss while we were there since it was our last night with family we most likely won't see again for a long time and honestly, the meal wasn't important. I went here again earlier this evening to get takeout for me and my dad n we both loved it. I picked up an order of both the Donna and the McAllen Enchiladas. We each shared some of one another's so I was able to make my opinion on both of ours. Mine was mainly the McAllen order, while his was mainly the Donna order. Both were fantastic and very delicious. My McAllen was also very balanced in very tasty white cheese, very tasty red chili sauce and had plenty of very tasty, very tender shredded chicken. The Donna had a great balance of very tasty yellow cheese, very tasty red chili sauce and plenty of very tasty ground beef. Both also had very tender, very fresh, very tasty corn wraps to hold the meat, cheese n sauce as well. I also want to make note that the beans had a nice added flavor to them and the rice with our orders was also delicious and very fresh. It was not uncooked, dry or bland at all, but full of great flavor. The service was also very fast, very efficient and very friendly on this visit again. For Tex-Mex Cuisine, Ninfa's and Sylvia's are my favorite places to get great food from. read more

Was hoping that this might be my new "go-to" for classic cheese enchiladas...sigh, it won't be. Location is great, I was immediately greeted & seated and my server was prompt and friendly. Ambiance was nice but a little too dark for me, could use a little bit brighter bulbs. I ordered the Refugio plate - to me, this is classic cheese enchiladas 101. A true Tex-Mex staple...I was really looking forward to this. Chips and salsa come, always a harsh critic on these because I'm a salsa connoisseur and I love me some amazing chips and salsa. Chips were bland, no salt, no taste. I didn't add salt, this wasn't going to help save them. Salsa wasn't bad but with failing chips, honestly, why waste the calories? My order arrives and I'm struck by the plate. Plates. Wooden serving charger with mini-metal school lunch looking contraption...? If you are someone who doesn't like their food to touch, then this is your place. They literally had corners, very strange. I am hopeful the food is better than the presentation, I dig in. Enchiladas were lukewarm and the tortillas were almost a tad soggy, if you will. Enchilada gravy was decent, but maybe a little too salty. Mexican rice is not the hardest thing to make, but you CAN screw it up if you're not careful with ingredients. My rice was really dry and I was so sad. Mixing the rice with a little of my gravy didn't help the situation much, so I left rice to be alone in its little side dish. I pay my bill and sulk because I realize that I wasted my tastebuds and calories on a lackluster dinner and go next door for Baskin Robbins because I know that ice cream never disappoints. we saw the TV show rating Sylvia's as the best Enchiladas and Fajitas. The chips were excellent and they only brought the basic Salsa but I request the Green and the Hotter Variety (Habenero) and they were all three great. All three of us tried different Enchiladas and as reported by other diners the Rice and Beans were barely warm and should have been served steaming hot.They must have a problem in the kitchen. The Enchiladas were good but I was expecting much more!!! Great Service and nice atmosphere. Owner should note continued reports of beans and rice not hot enough!!! Main problem was deception. I have been dining at Sylvia's for many years.I enjoy the quail, but I am allergic to the Mexican grits.They always have substituted grilled squash or zucchini.Waiter told me the squash would be out in a few minutes.At the end of the meal, I inquired about the squash and was told the manager had not allowed it "because the grits were already made."This made no sense and simply indicated a desire not to be helpful.The restaurant has not responded to my communication. I should have been told honestly and upfront about the change in policy, so that I could have ordered another dish. I am seriously considering not returning. read more

By far the best fajitas I've ever had. Order by the pound. The meat is perfect. I've tried fajitas all over town (prob tried more than 50 places) and this is the best one so far. Server took the order, someone else delivered the food, she never came back until she delivered the check...never even offered to refill the tea. The place was almost empty. The food was garbage. I ordered shrimp enchiladas. Only problem: Where ARE the shrimp? There were two tiny shrimp per enchilada. Plate was drenched with onions, peppers and other garbage which I scraped off, but the main entre was basically non-existent. Total ripoff. Worst Mexican food I've had in years. So disappointing. The waitress was very sweet, but barely spoke English. She mixed up our orders, but we didnt send the food back as we were with other guests. I asked for ceviche and was given a shrimps cocktail, which tasted like canned shrimp with canned tomatoes poured on top. I was expecting more because I've had some great enchiladas at other places around town. Instead of ordering sides of beans and rice, I opted for the Mexican Caesar salad which was scrumptious. I was really looking forward to eating here and had this place on my restaurant bucket list for quite some time. But I was quite underwhelmed and won't go back. Ordered the Puebla enchiladas which are chicken and mole enchiladas because I absolutely love mole. But this mole was awful. It lacked the deep complex flavors the moles are famous for. Tasted like a cheap store bought jar version. Very disappointed. I also ordered a single ala carte Mexico City enchilada to try which was decent but not worth the $7 for one simple medium sized enchilada on the side. Service also lacked in several ways. Waitress was nice but made a couple key mis-steps. My water at one point was topped off by my waitress with sprite which I discovered after taking a sip of the semi sweet water. Not a biggie and easily resolved. It didn't bother me as I know is an easy mistake. But then after finishing my food and requesting the bill, I had to wait for a good bit of time for my bill. And when when it arrived, it was for $174. Yep $174 for an enchilada plate with a single ala carte enchilada on the side and a cup of water. An obvious error as there were many other items on the bill but I would have expected that the waitress would check the bill before presenting to a customer. Then it took a good 7-8 minutes for her to come back with a correct bill. I know because I had texted my friend about the situation then looked at the time. Even one of the other waitresses asked me what's going on. By then, I couldn't wait to get out of there after a sub-par meal and a couple of aggravations. Not good and won't be back. read more

Went there last night, true it was Monday night, but shouldn't your food be as good every time they are open......Well, it wasn't....very disappointing. My husband ordered chicken fajitas - Not only were they not grilled on a steaming plate, they only had green peppers and onions and very little. The chicken was obviously cooked on a grill and cut and put on the iron plate. The worst Fajitas I've Ever seen and no taste. My combination plate was just okay. At best I give them two stars, because the beer was cold and refreshing. We won't be going back there for sure. read more

Great enchiladas. Fast service for lunch. I ordered the Mexico City (chicken enchiladas, green sauce, sour cream). Lunch specials come with rice and your choice of beans. I chose black. Everything was quite tasty. Beans are nice and soupy if that's what you like. I'll be returning. read more

Just had lunch with my sister and her husband /we had the Labor Day Special/mesquite grilled chicken and ribs with all the extras .. rice /beans/potato salad /tortillas /sopapillas .. everything was absolutely delicious!!
