The staff were really nice and efficient. The waffles had a delicious flavor but were dry and needed butter and syrup. They charge $1 for a tiny shot glass of syrup which I don't quite get that since the name is "Syrup Trap", you'd think syrup and waffles would just be a given. Also they don't even offer butter. Let's start with the waffle: I ordered a waffle with brie and prosciutto. The brie was certainly melted and was relatively good, the prosciutto was cold. Not sure why they would serve the meat cold on top... They didn't have anything I wanted to drink. Still blows my mind that some places don't cary soda. I knew that before hand but figured the waffle would make up for it, it did not. They have water, ONLY CUCUMBER WATER, and the cucumber taste was very prevalent... This is a cute little place that doesn't get enough recognition. Many of their items are callbacks to the show Parks and Recreation; which is very innovative, even if you're not familiar with the show. It's like no other place in Vancouver. We visited this morning. The place was busy. We placed our order and found a table to sit at. We waited over 45 minutes for our order. It appeared that take out orders were being done first over in house customers. When the order finally arrived, it was only 2 of the 4 plates. We had to wait another 15 minutes for ours, and saw more take out orders going before ours. The wait wasn't worth it. The waffle was gummy because it was undercooked. It wasn't just 1 plate but all 4. The bacon was soggy, like it had been cooked in an oven. None of us finished the waffle after waiting so long. It just wasn't worth the calories if we weren't enjoying it. It was a shame because the staff was really hustling to get things done. Perhaps if they switched to all take out orders, in house customers wouldn't end up with such a long wait, because the orders would be done in the order received. Even then, I don't think I would go back. I give the staff 4 stars. read more

Update to my below 3-star review. The owner contacted me after investigating my complaints. I appreciated the way he made things right and was going to provide additional training to the new employee who had not divulged the extra costs... plus, apparently the mocha was supposed to come with whip cream after all. Based on the way the business addressed my concerns, I am adding another star and will give the Syrup Trap another try. I know my son will thank me since they did have a great little play area! Former review: Although the food was quite good, I was upset to be so nickeled and dimed. Trying to upsell without even saying that there's an additional charge is a bit shady. Plus, if I'm already spending $40+ on just 3 waffles and 3 drinks, you shouldn't charge an extra $.25 for whip cream on a mocha when at almost all other places, whip cream on a mocha is free! Also, a tiny thing of syrup was $1 (and wasn't even disclosed when we were asked if we wanted syrup on our waffles). Also, all 3 of our drinks were not full. I actually had to take my son's $3 tiny orange juice and ask for them to add another inch of juice since we were shorted by so much! I am very disappointed as this is a very stingy and unbecoming way to treat customers. It apparently is an attitude that comes from the top. A couple good things: toddler play area and cucumber water. Bathrooms aren't in the building, and you have to go upstairs in the next building over to those bathrooms... no changing tables. They do have a way to allow handicapped people to use the employee restroom down a floor in the nextdoor building's elevator. I did appreciate that being an option in case the stairs wouldn't work for my kiddo. Overall, it reminded me of waffle window, but more pricy, with better silverware, a kids' play area, and some overcharges. Tasty, though. read more

I was very excited to try the Syrup Trap. I love waffles! The atmosphere was sort of cafeteria-like, but very clean! Prices were a bit high, but I was expecting a really high-quality waffle. And that's where this jumped the shark. The waffle, while really nice looking, was really dry. I think it was aiming for an artisanal feel, but it missed the mark. It needed to be drowned in that shot glass of syrup in order to be palatable. Sorry, Syrup Trap, there's a LOT of places around town right now with very high-quality breakfast food. A friend who works in the building that Syrup Trap opened in was telling me how great the food is so we checked it out. I ordered the Elvis waffle (peanut butter, banana and bacon) it was delicious. Everything that other people around me ordered looked great as well. Also the coffee is Water Street which is one of my favorite local brands. This place is great! I can also say that they were busy and the service and speed was very good. Excellent cleanliness too. I'm going to have to rate this business 10/10. read more

This place is a hidden gem in downtown Vancouver. The space is light, bright, and airy, in addition to being spotlessly clean. There were plenty of tables, without feeling too crowded. Zoe was incredibly friendly and chill, and brought me my waffle very quickly. I ordered the JG-squared, which I wish I would have taken a picture of before scarfing it down, but trust me when I say that it was delicious. I felt that the amount of topping on the waffle was generous, while maintaining a balanced flavor. The blueberries were perfectly ripe and sweet, a fantastic counterpoint to the lemon curd. In fact, the waffle was so good that I ordered a plain one to go so that I could share it with my spouse. I watched the guy whom I presume is the owner take fresh dough and put it on the iron. Nothing frozen or pre-prepared here! We talked about coffee while it cooked, and I could tell that he was very passionate about this new restaurant, and about being part of the local community. This month (April 2018) they're featuring Relevant Coffee as their "Guest" coffee, which is another amazing local business to check out. Prices are very reasonable for what you get, and there are both savory and sweet options. I got a sweet as my first one, but I think next time I'll try a savory, because the base would work beautifully for it. And a note on the waffle itself - if you're expecting something like a buttermilk/diner-style waffle, toss that out the window. These are unlike any you've probably had - yeasty, thick, and complex...you'll have to try them yourself, because I really can't do 'em justice. I had hands down the best waffle I've ever had in my life here. This place is small and trendy and you place your order at the counter. There's a little play area which is nice if you have children. The waffles are made with dough rather than a typical waffle batter and there are tiny crystallized sugars that form within the dough as it cooks. My daughter and I ate here for breakfast after striking out at the Vancouver Farmer's Market. Nothing there was appealing for breakfast so we searched and found this little gem. They mostly serve Liege style waffles. If you haven't had them you are missing out. Liege style waffles have Belgian pearl sugar in the batter, which gives them a little crunch of flavor. Syrup Trap offers both sweet and savory waffles and we tried one of each. Both were delicious. They have excellent coffee as well, and cheerfully made me a flat white upon my request. Where they needed refinement was ambience and getting the menu/order straight. They forgot half the order for two top...two people. The ambience, or to be clear, atmosphere was loud. Very loud. Can't focus on your own words loud. The place is small, but also stark...so echos. If there were outdoor seating, I'd be inclined to sit outside. I either don't recall it, or it didn't exist when I was there several months ago. Their issues may be chalked up to new kid jitters. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Go and try. Waffles and coffee in downtown Vancouver. It's a unique idea and a cute shop. We had the Leslie Knope and the JG^2. They use organic produce and everything was fresh. The waffle was crispy on the outside and there was enough fruit so that every bite had some. I would have liked more lemon curd though. My 3 year old easily ate a whole waffle but I wouldn't call them small. My friend had the Couve Club. It looked and smelled delicious. (She didn't share, so it must have been good.) I think that the savory waffles are a better value, and I was left feeling like I paid more than I should have for my fruit ones. It all tasted good, but the JG^2 and the Couve Club don't seem equivalent when they are next to each other. Their coffee menu is as big as their waffle menu and they have everything listed by their technical name (i.e. freddo and cortado...the macchiato is not the Starbucks version) which leaves things needing to be explained if you aren't in the know about coffee. Decaf costs extra, which is a bummer for me. As does non-dairy milk, but that's typical. If you are looking for a classy cup of coffee, here's a good place to start. They also have nitro cold brew and an expansive tea selection which includes nitro chai, which I will be back for. My friend had a cup of drip and said it was "strong". The interior decor is nice and clean. There are a good amount of tables and a little table with a couple toys for kids to play at while they wait. Everything is cooked to order but the wait was not long. There is a steady stream of clientele but the staff managed it easily and was super friendly and informative the whole time. I will probably go back when I can consume caffeine again and I will definitely go for a savory waffle if I get one. I hope this place sticks around for a while. read more

We chose Syrup Trap for the curbside offering as we had to leave town in the morning. We did our online ordering and paying then proceeded to wait. After 30 minutes, we were still waiting. Two waffles. Two coffees. My wife went in to ask and she was told they were in a bag waiting for the last ten minutes. No one sent us a message they were ready. No one walked them to the curbside. What could have been a delicious breakfast was ruined by clueless servers who had no power to make things right. Only let us know the owner would have to choose to refund our order or make it right. Customer service is a 1 for curbside. Food could be 5 but I don't rate warm bagged food. $34 is a lot to pay for two waffles and two coffees. read more

The name refers to their AUTHENTIC Belgian style waffles, which are made with yeast rather than baking powder. The waffles bake up crispy on the outside and soft and yummy on the inside. The plate includes a little shot glass of maple syrup. Several tlwafgle toppings are available such as bacon and fruit. It is self-service. The restaurant is sunny (even on our rainiest day!) With light-colored wooden tables, and a friendly staff. They have highchairs and a couple of toys to keep the little ones occupied.
