I came for lunch with my family and it wasn't too crowded Sunday at 12:30 pm when we came, though slowly a couple more groups trickled in while we were there. They offer lunch/dinner specials that are great if you don't want to share. For $12-13 at lunch, you can get your choice of entree + rice + egg roll + soup/salad. Portions are very generous too! One person got the Szechuwan chicken lunch special for $12 and wasn't able to finish the chicken. The rest of us shared a couple dishes off the regular menu: #102 Combination seafood ($23) #620 Fish with black bean sauce ($18) #804 Szechuwan shredded pork ($15) 3 bowls of rice ($1.75 each) Of the three dishes, we liked the seafood and fish the best. They were more savory than sweet, though they were still quite sweet. I didn't like the shredded pork at all as it was much sweeter than the other two. I recently went to Szechuan Garden in Topanga Canyon with my husband, and unfortunately, this was an experience I will not repeat. From the moment we arrived, the energy felt uncomfortable. The owner/waiter was extremely rude, abrupt, and not customer-friendly. We were asked if we were ready to order, and before we could even respond properly, he walked away from the table. When we said that we were ready, we still ended up waiting another 10 minutes. I ordered the corn soup and a vegetarian dish. When the soup arrived, I immediately noticed that it contained chicken. My husband is vegan and I had not touched the soup. I explained this to him, and he insisted that he had already told me the soup contained chicken. My husband and I both know that he did not mention that when we ordered. He took the completely untouched soup back, but I was later charged for it. I had to ask him to remove it from the bill, which he refused My husband said the tofu was okay, but honestly, good food doesn't make up for terrible customer service. The way we were treated completely ruined the experience. I also want to be clear that I am writing this review as a reminder to myself not to make the mistake of returning. I would not recommend this restaurant to my friends or family, and or enemies if you have other options, I would seriously consider going somewhere else. Customer service matters. Respect matters. Szechuwan Garden, on Topanga Blvd is a place I have been to, years ago. There were fond, but mixed memories. So my impromptu visit after appetizers at the Vietnamese restaurant across the street was poignant. Here, I was in time for the lunch special and rude customer service (Gary is his name). He kept hurrying me, reminding me that they were closing soon, etc (as if I did not know). My choice was the fish with black bean sauce. Came out wonderfully prepared, with flavor, generous pieces of white fish (probably Swai) and crunchy vegetables bathed in a thick sauce. The accompanying fried rice was uneventful, just plain with a light brown color, no veggies, no egg. The egg flower soup was more brownish in color than I have seen at other places, and lacked the color, body, freshness and flavor of its competition. The egg roll though was well fried. What was unique here is the accompaniment for the included egg roll. A crucible of skillfully arranged liquids - mustard and plum sauce, together (see my pictures, this was a first). Overall, a lunch that could have been up there, was spoiled by the indifferent customer service. I did mention it to the lady at the check out counter, when asked how I enjoyed. This used to be our go to for good chinese food. We last visited a year ago and the food had taken a noticeable downturn in freshness and seasoning. My wife and I decided to try again in the hope that it had gotten better. We ordered take out. It smelled and looked great. Upon tasting the egg fried rice, it had an off putting taste and smell like soap. It was cold and had a weird chemical smell. I chalked it up to being leftover food and then ate the rest of the meal. Both my wife and I had different dishes so it was strange that we both got very ill with stomach pains and bad diarrhea. The hot and sour soup is my favorite. Kung pao is great, not a single thing is bad on the menu. Everything is great, honestly. But tonight I had my first bad experience... there were two pieces of steel wool in my kung pao chicken. I was chewing it, thinking it was a tough bean sprout, until I pulled it out. It was the steel wool in the picture. Again, 15+ years here and this never happened, just one time. The Chinese style seafood chowder was like a shrimp flavored egg drop soup with really nice size pieces of shrimp in it. It was absolutely delicious. You can't find New York style chow mein at many establishments in California so we were excited to see it on the menu. The vegetables were perfectly crispy, just the way they should be, and the sauce was super tasty too. Beef lo mein is one of our go-to dishes that almost every restaurant does right. Szechuan Garden is no exception. It was just what we wanted. We had our order taken by one server but others bought us our food and containers at the end of the meal. After trying Szechuwan Garden for the first time recently i really enjoyed their food. They have a good kung pao chicken and sizzling rice soup, i recommend asking for it to be extra hot. Went there a couple of weeks ago. We ordered 4 dishes: Paper Chicken, Chow Fun, String Beans and General Chicken. The portions were so large we couldn't even eat half of the food. This place is just not good at all. I don't normally write reviews, but their food was so bad that I feel warranted to warn others to not come here. As if they just fried the squid pieces in batter, placed it in the box after frying and placed chili peppers on top. The dish literally has the ingredient's in the name. So, how can this not be tasty? There was no hint of taste of pepper or salt. Again, just bland batter fried on the squid and served. The worst yang chow fried rice I've ever had! BLAND. The thing about yang chow fried rice is that it is a combination of frying rice with pork and shrimp with scallions. So, again... how can this dish now be so BLAND. It was almost as if they took freshly made white rice, then placed some lightly fried pork and shrimp without scallions. Funny thing about this place is that it is a Chinese restaurant. It is so fascinating to have received BLAND dishes at a Chinese restaurant. Their dishes are known to be full of vibrant flavors. And yet, it was almost as if it was intentionally made terribly BLAND. Save your money and time from this troubled Chinese restaurant. It's like they do not believe in MSG or salt or any spices for that matter. Just a terrible Chinese restaurant. They should be ashamed. I wish I could tell you about any other dishes that they have but these are my go-to orders at this spot. We were customers of Szechuwan Garden for years. On July 23, 2025, we ordered food for delivery. On July 25, 2025, we were having the leftovers. In the course of consuming the food, my wife had a shard of metal in her mouth. The metal was in the food. I called Szechuwan Garden to alert them of the fact that that their food contained a piece of metal. We were not looking for our money back or anything - just to alert them of the hazard. I was met with indifference; specifically, "Okay. So sorry. Goodbye." If this piece of metal had been ingested, it would have lacerated my wife's esophagus and stomach. See photo. read more

I ordered takeout--got the Sesame Chicken and wonton soup. This was easily the worst Chinese takeout I've ever had. I took one bite of the chicken and threw it away in the outside dumpster, I didn't even want it in my kitchen garbage. It was dry, soggy, and tasted like it was fried in the same peanut oil they've been using for years. The soup was bland and the wontons were undercooked--I tossed that too, because I couldn't trust anything that came out of that kitchen. When I picked up the food, there was no one eating inside. So I'm guessing this isn't a popular spot with in-person diners either. The man at the front seemed friendly, but that's the only redeeming quality of this place. I usually don't take the time to write bad reviews, but it's an awful experience to drive somewhere and give them a bunch of money essentially to take out their trash. When the food quality is this low, you can't help but wonder about food safety, too. Do not spend your money here if you value it, your time, and possibly even your health. read more
