I saw the $12 & up Lunch/Dinner Special so I ordered the Sesame Chicken w/ Fried Rice Dinner. All Dinner after 4 is extra $2. Food was ready in less than 10 min. Fried rice was just fried rice but I was impressed by the Sesame Chicken. The portion was bigger than the fried rice and was full of flavor. It came with an egg roll and a small salad. For value, it should have been nice to save maybe 2 dollars. As for the quality, I'll rate it a B+. As for the overall experience, I will say "Not bad at all". Szechuwan Garden is the kind of consistently good neighborhood go to for American-Chinese food that we all wish and hope for. I have been ordering take-out from here (phone or online ordering options available) and it's always an easy experience. Everything is always made in a timely manner and packaged nicely. This location of Szechuwan (they have another location in Canoga Park) is tucked away in the corner of a strip mall. I haven't dined in yet but it seems pretty modern inside. There is parking in the rear, a shared parking option in the strip mall and also street is available of course. Prices are great for the quality and quantity. They have a lunch special from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm that is very well priced with great options. The menu is vast with over a hundred items and so there should be something to always try or to choose from for specific tastes/needs. Portions are generous and are usually good to be shared. Everything I've ordered has been pretty flavorful. Somethings I've ordered but not limited to: Lo Mein (choice of protein, combo, or veggie) - Nicely cooked thin wheat soft noodles with good flavor and proteins are tender Walnut Shrimp - Shrimp has a slight crisp and yet still succulent Tangerine Beef -Crispy beef with onions and red chilis. Has a good chew, sauce is not overpowering. Fried Wontons - Fried wontons with ground chicken. The filling seemed limited and almost non-existent last time, so I'll be skipping this in the future. Pepper and Salt Shrimp - I would recommend to order this dining in vs take-out as the batter could get soggy if you're doing take-out. Vegetable Egg Roll - Good sized egg rolls with a good crunch and filled nicely with cabbage, carrot and green onion. Sesame Chicken - Deep fried chicken in a house special sauce. This Asian restaurant is unfriendly and unwelcoming. The waitstaff was impatient and behaved as if rushed, despite the fact that the restaurant was empty of other customers. The food, while not spectacular, was tasty. Service of the food was a little slow, despite the otherwise empty dining room, but acceptable. I was with a group of ten people. We each placed our order. I requested that my dish have brown instead of white sauce. In my experience this request has never been an issue. In this restaurant, they add an additional charge. The waiter failed to mention that they tack on an additional charge to accommodate this request. The addition of the small additional charge was not a problem. However, the waiter's failure to mention it should have been an indication of problems to come! At the end of the meal each individual received their own check, presented on a small tray, and paid for his/her meal. The waiter proceeded to collect the payments, some cards, some cash, which were placed on the trays. He started this process off to my right, working his way around the table, and, with my back to him, reached over my right shoulder to grab my tray. I looked over, astonished, because I was not quite finished with my transaction! My payment was made in cash, and the waiter had returned two pennies of change. I had not yet placed money for the tip on the tray because I was engaged in conversation with a friend seated to my left. Meanwhile the waiter swooped down and began collecting the trays as I continued speaking with my companion, handbag on my lap. Suddenly, there was a commotion directly across the table! I looked up! The waiter was growling and hissing and telling other guests at the table that "that person over there left two cents as a tip!" He then pointed to the person seated to my right and continued complaining loudly to the other guests, "and that person left me only a 10% tip!" The waiter was rude and arrogant and I both frightened and embarrassed by his actions! There are MANY lovely Asian restaurants in my neighborhood. I will not patronize this one again. I recommend avoiding the Szechwan Gardens on Ventura Blvd in Tarzana! read more

Spoiled Food, Hostile Service, and Even Mice!!! In town visiting family, and we decided to eat here. Over 10 years ago this location was a different restaurant (Mandarin Tiger), and we had many good memories there. Interestingly, my very first Yelp review was for that place. Unfortunately, present day this restaurant was the opposite experience: poor food, poor service, and an overall unpleasant visit. We arrived shortly after 4:00pm, the first customers of the evening. One of the dishes we ordered was spoiled; it tasted unsafe. When we asked to return it, the server was dismissive and rude, insisting we would be charged for the egg rolls included in the dinner special because we chose to send the dish back. My family reluctantly agreed just to avoid further conflict, but the handling of the situation was unprofessional. Throughout the visit, service was inattentive and hostile. Our server ignored requests for water, and when he finally brought it, he placed it roughly on the table. Additional family members who arrived later were never even offered a chance to order. The atmosphere was uncomfortably hot; when we asked if the air conditioning could be turned on, the server tried turning on a fan, but it didn't work. He then claimed he had adjusted the thermostat. Afterward, other local family members told me they had already experienced similar problems at this restaurant: poor food, unhelpful service, and an overheated dining room. On their visit, other customers also complained about the heat, so it seems to be an ongoing issue. Food quality overall was disappointing; family members even commented they've had better food at fast-casual chains like Panda Express. The most concerning issue came as we left: multiple mice were visible in the parking lot, and one even ran into the restaurant. This raised serious concerns about cleanliness and food safety. The only positive was that the space itself brought back old memories, but it is clear this is not the same management or quality it once was. You walk into a very pleasant and spacious dining room. Our waiter was very attentive and patient, given that we asked for TEN separate checks. Well, the food is incredibly good. The simple, ubiquitous egg roll was delicious--we all agreed that it was one of the best we'd ever tasted. I ordered the spicy shredded beef, a tricky dish most Chinese restaurants don't even attempt. Crispy, flavorful and tender! The lunch portions are enormous, but the prices are excellent, starting at $11 for a meal that also includes rice and soup or salad. I'm just sad that they don't deliver. I recently went to this place for my lunch break from work and I ordered the Chinese chicken salad and the steamed edamame, this was probably the worst food I've ever had , first the salad had none of the ingredients that a Chinese chicken salad should have the chicken looks like it was canned chicken no flavor not even any salt, and to top it off, it looked like they just put some canned chicken on top of a bed of lettuce, the edamame it was steamed had no salt on it. Brought my friend here for her birthday dinner. Everything was delicious. We had BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Crispy Honey Walnut Shrimp, Shrimp Egg Fu Young and the Pu Pu Platter for 2. All cooked to order and came from the kitchen, fresh and hot and tasty. We had enough to split and take leftovers which were even better the next day and the price was very reasonable. We passed this restaurant numerous times over the years and decided to stop in one day for lunch and had a great lunch! I had the sweet-and-sour chicken and my husband had the beef broccoli. It was delicious that day, so we decided to come back for dinner on an evening we were craving Chinese food. Happily we had the same great service & delicious food! Rebecca was our greeter & server. Very nice lady! Joseph was also checking in our out table. He was also very nice and both attentive. This particular evening I had the war wonton soup for my dinner, which was probably one of the best I've ever had! I would not hesitate to get it again. My husband have the fish with the brown sauce and the fried rice, he really enjoyed it. He had a glass of Kendall Jackson Cabernet Sauvignon with his dinner. The egg roll is your standard egg roll, no complaints, love it, you know what you're getting Fried rice was a bit of a disappointment. Not a veggie or egg in sight, just looks like they cooked it in soy sauce. Not really bad by any means, but quite literally any fried rice is gonna be better than this. Chicken lo mein is a slightly better take out chicken lo mein. No big MSG taste I've had in others, chicken was moist but isnt super flavorful, big portion, its an ideal take out chinese meal. A classic if you must For $11, its really hard to beat a meal of this caliber, after buying a coke I walked out paying $17 after tip and I dont regret it one bit! Wont wow you're socks off, but seems to be a very dependable Chinese place. Also, delivery seems to be cheap, only $1.50 to delivery within 3 miles so will be doing that in the future. 3.5/5 would be my accurate rating. Oh come on, this place is 5 stars on all levels! Finally! There's a place on Ventura Boulevard with affordable prices, and good quality Chinese food. Service is exceptional. The food is great, but our server Joseph stole the show. He's very humble, attentive and as classy as a server can be. The care and attention to detail he took preparing the Mu Shu showed. I Highly recommend the Thai Iced Tea. Food: In general, the portions are HUGE. Definitely 30% more quantity than other places, AND still at a reasonable price. Fried Rice is divine. Lots of protein, and the rice has a nice chew and mouth feel. Mu Shu: not salty at all, even the plum sauce was a perfect blend of umami and flavor, with just a hint of sweet. Sesame Chicken: my favorite. Not too breaded, not too sweet. I think it's the perfect blend of crunchy and crispy. Mongolian Beef: another favorite of mine. Tender cuts of beef, tossed with green onion in a brown sauce. Very savory. Shrimp with mushrooms: very tasty, and tender shrimp. Not overcooked at all. It's got a nice chew to it, and the mushrooms are very tender and flavorful. Fried Fish: crispy! You can opt for the jalapeno on top, or leave it plain. Egg rolls: 4 in an order. Very crispy, a golden brown color. The inside is steaming hot with a mix of cabbage and vegetable. Parking: it's part of a small strip mall with other restaurants. If you come during the week for dinner, there should be plenty of spaces, and a couple of handicap spots available. Decor: I would call it modern classy. Some LED light accents adorn paintings on the wall, very clean and pristine. They are really good about keeping the place spotless. Overall, I am quite pleased with this place. First time visiting, and I will definitely be back! The waiter said people might not be used to the style. I've been eating chicken all my life. Not sure what that was, but style had nothing to do with the lack of freshness of the meat. My friend's shrimp had no flavor and her soup was lukewarm. The food didn't taste good, not fresh and was highly salted.
