Stopped by this place for lunch with my cousin after picking her up from school. The inside had lots of seats available and was clean. Service was quick too. We got chicken wings, scallion pancake, pork and shrimp dumplings, and pork soup dumplings. The chicken wings had a mountain of fried garlic on top of them. We didn't prefer it, but garlic lovers would love this appetizer. The scallion pancake was solid--thin and crispy with scallions throughout. The pork and shrimp dumplings were our favorite, filled with ground pork, and whole pieces of shrimp, served with an awesome sauce that brought everything together. The soup dumplings were not that great. They looked like they were steamed a bit too long, and the soup had leaked through. Would not get these again. read more

I had been to Northern cafe a few times, and recently it seems that both the food and the customer service has been lacking. I took my family there recently and the food was acceptable to eat, but I would not say it was a good representation of what it used to be. The beef soup noodle was generally lacking in strong savory flavor and the noodles were overcooked. The dumplings were also lacking in flavor. For these reasons I will give Northern Cafe 3-stars. However, I must add that I am being very generous, since I do not take away stars for one incident of poor service. The service was horrendous, from the beginning to the end of the meal, it was an awful experience. To begin, there was no greeting, and this is a frequent problem. Customers are left to stand in the lobby with no direction or acknowledgement of their presence. The staff sometimes look your way to ignore you until you confront them and ask for a table, which they may not give you until you ask the right person. The server did not write down our order and forgot some of it. They never came around to check on us. The food came out in a scattered fashion. Eventually when we were finished eating, no server came to ask us if we wanted the check or any boxes to go. After getting their attention, I received the bill, but they didnt take my payment. They never came around again, I told my family to leave without me and maybe they will notice we are finished and I am holding the bill and my cars in the air. No service again for what seemed like an eternity sitting at an empty table with food I at one time wanted to take home, but now I was just desperate to get out. Eventually I catch the eye of some other staff, not my server, who never came back, and they flagged someone else from the kitchen to take care of my payment. Not surprisingly, even with all the food left on the table, they did not offer if we wanted any of it to go. The saddest part of this experience is that I used to like this place. There are lots of Chinese restaurants in the valley and this palace serves food that you may expect from other traditional locations. My only negative comment is that this place isn't designed to host large groups or families like I'm used to from more traditional spots. I'd say 6 or less in a group is ideal here. They can technically accommodate larger parties, but the group feels disjointed. It's very easy to go family style here. When you order an entree, it's normally in a large portion and probably not what you want to eat for the entire meal. I'd recommend coming in a group of 4 and ordering 4 different entrees. Ask for smaller plates so that you can try other dishes to balance out the flavor profiles. It started off with the fact that they have a big parking lot with a ton of free parking. Once we stepped inside it was really cute. We loved the booth seating, and the variety of options. We did go an hour before their closing time, which is why it was probably quite empty, but it was nice not being in crowded place for dinner. We ordered a couple of things to share. We got the pork wontons in chili oil, the shrimp and chives boiled dumplings, the beef fried noodles, and the sweet and sour pork ribs. The food arrived pretty quickly. Great family style portion sizes, and very flavorful! The prices were also reasonable, which was a plus! Also, loved their house made chili oil. I've dined at Northern Cafe a couple of times and the food is pretty good, but not the best Chinese food I've ever had. The portions are very generous and you can feed a lot of people at a decent price point here. The service is standard and the restaurant itself has a clean feel. My favorite menu items have to be the green beans and the spicy shrimp wontons; I tried the kung pao chicken in my most recent visit and I would probably skip it next time as I felt that it was a little bland. My first time at this location. I tried the one in Hollywood before a show so we didn't get a chance to relax and enjoy. We all loved everything we got. We like eating family style so we can try a little bit of everything. Green beans were the table favorite and must have. I really like the fried rice because it was flavorful without being drowned in soy sauce. I was the only one eating the wonton soup dumpling. Skin was a little thicker and gummier but I do realize it needs to be able to hold the soup and meat inside. Dumpling was tasty and comforting. Orange chicken was better than most fast food Chinese places. Crispier and the sauce wasn't too sweet. I didn't like the thick noodles in the chow mein. It's not what I expected. I had high expectations for this place because I enjoyed the food in the Northern Cafe restaurant at Downtown LA. But sadly, I was disappointed by this branch on Reseda. The menu was on laminated paper which must be a few years old and felt disgusting to touch. I started with hot tea and it was served in a metal cup. I wish they served it in a nice ceramic container for customer's enjoyment. For lunch, we ordered chicken chow mein and their pork and crab dumpling (like a xiao long bao). The chicken chow mein had a boatload of cabbage and probably 10 strips of chow mein noodles. It should have been called cabbage noodles (lol). The pork and crab dumplings would have been a hit, but the dumpling shell had a "soapy" smell. The meat inside was soft and tasted good, but I couldn't get over the smell of the shell. We would have also wanted to try seaweed salad, but it was unavailable on this day. The parking at Northern Cafe is plenty. The staff is also courteous. But given the state of the food and overall feel, I give it only two stars. Truthfully, you can find better Chinese food close by this area. There's Maru Ramen on Reseda and Nordhoff, or Silverlake Ramen on Rinaldi. And no, I don't work for either of those places. All of this feedback is based on customer experience. read more

Northern Chinese cuisine is so good! We were in the mood for some good dumplings and noodle, and I remembered that I wanted to try this restaurant Northern Cafe right by CSUN. It's a nice, spacious restaurant with plenty of booths and windows. The staff were friendly and the food came out on time, so that's a plus there. Now when it came to our meal, we definitely enjoyed everything that we ordered. We started out with Garlic Chicken Wings and Popcorn Chicken (not spicy at all, but delicious), and they both were great starters, especially if you like having the saltier side of your fried chicken. The Popcorn Chicken is almost addicting and it's easy to finish it before you know it. Then out comes the House Special Beef Noodle Soup which I think is almost a mandatory must-have. I did wish I went with hand-pulled noodles instead of the regular noodle, but you can't go wrong with any of their noodle options. The broth was, warm, calming, and steeped in the wonderful aromatic beef flavor, while the noodle and beef were cooked to near perfection. Add some (or a lot) of chili oil, and you have yourself some noodle nirvana! The handmade Juicy Pork Dumplings may be hot (caution), but slurping the hot soup out of them was half the fun! They were well made and were just a treat. 8 pieces are plenty to start so they're not stingy with their portions. Finally, the Angus Beef Fried Rice was our last dish and it was quite good although it fell a bit short compared to the other dishes. It's not that it was not tasty, it just wasn't as tantalizing and was a bit more one-note and could have uses a bit more kick in the flavors. All in all though, I'm looking forward to coming back to try more of their menu! read more

I went here with my aunt in northridge. I had to take care of my grandfather who has cancer. We came here because we had to order dinner take out because we didn't have time to go to the grocery store to get food. She craves this place and same with my uncle. We ordered the beef roll pancake. It was worse than what I had at other places but I enjoyed it still. It had a sweet and tangy flavor but the texture was a soft bite. For 15$ I don't think it was worth it but I liked the flavor and texture to a certain extent. We also ordered their original beef noodle bowl. It was as I expected, salty and warm. The flavors were okay but it was short from amazing. We also ordered some pork egg rolls and wontons. I tried a small bite of one and it was horrendous. I just don't like pork in general due to its high salt and nitrate/nitrite levels. Overall, the food is decent and the noodles are its highlight. We ordered the chow mein too and the noodles have a fresh texture and taste to it. Inside it was crowded and with a lot of Chinese families. This is a sign the place is pretty good otherwise if it had other people I would be skeptical of it. Pricing was $85 for everything which was high for what we received. read more

Had great shrimp flavor and the wontons were the perfect chewiness. It wasn't too spicy and the sauce clung to the wontons so you get a perfect bite every time. Next was the Stir Fried cabbage and the Sautéed green beans, if you like these vegetables you will love these dishes. Very flavorful and huge portions, they both come with white rice.
