I wasn't expecting to like this place as much as I did (our first time here), because honestly there are a lot of fairly mediocre Chinese places. I had just been to a new-to-me one that had micro chicken bits coated in mega thick batter, and I was still smarting from that experience. But I overcame my fear of a repeat experience and ordered the Orange Chicken lunch special. What a difference! This place is really really good! You can see the included chicken salad is put together with care and multiple ingredients: shredded chicken, fried won ton skin, almonds, nice dressing. Impressed. My chicken came and big pieces! You bite into one and it's substantial white breast meat - wow, nice! I'm just too used to biting into battered chicken or pork and feeling like other places used junk bits hiding within the batter and sauce. But Taba Taba uses quality meat and a more sophisticated orange peel sauce. You can see/find the dried orange peel within the sauce which gives it a more complex flavor. I really liked it. The chow mein was good too - not oily at all. The service was friendly and great too. The woman who served us was friendly and really really attentive to all tables, looking around to see what was needed, making sure everyone was doing OK, whether water needed to be refilled, picking up the check as soon as the credit card was put down on the check. A real care factor above and beyond what you normally find. She chatted with my wife too for a bit on our way out - friendly and warm. I usually don't make a point of saying, "The food is really good here", but I felt compelled to. I know that Chinese food restaurants, the vast majority, do cater to American tastes, so the food isn't strictly "authentic" - just a reality of who the audience is. But even so, this was done at an elevated level that satisfies the American taste, while adding some richness/subtlety to the flavors that makes it better than your typical Chinese restaurant. I'd be very happy to come here again. I talked a lot about the food and service, but the decor was also nice - pretty typical, nothing outstanding in this regard, but the food and service are so much more important to me anyway, and those were definitely strong points of Taba Taba. read more

Came here for lunch with my husband on Saturday. The last time we came to this location, it was still Jasmine. We felt lucky to find an empty spot in their parking lot, which was shared with Willow Street Pizza. The restaurant wasn't too busy. Typical Chinese restaurant ambience but with dimmed lights. It was more catered for non-Chinese customers, with forks on the table. No problem asking for chopsticks, as expected. Service was prompt and friendly. I ordered Lunch Combo A: Honey Walnut Prawns with Chow Mein. The hot & sour soup included with the lunch was delicious and not too spicy. It's perfect after adding some white pepper. The chicken salad was fresh, crunchy, and delightful. It's a much better and healthier alternative to spring rolls usually included in lunch specials at other Chinese restaurants. The chow mein was not oily nor salty at all, and had quite a bit of vegetables. It paired really well with the honey walnut prawns, which was prepared really well. There're 8 large, flavorful and juicy prawns, and a handful of candied walnuts. My husband enjoyed his orange chicken lunch combo as well. I tried a piece of his chicken, and it was scrumptious, with a light batter and yummy sauce. We ended our meal with the classic fortune cookies. I was surprised by how well executed and tasty the food was. Comparing to the lunch specials at Tsing Tao, which we tried recently, we both preferred the ones at Taba Taba. Always a great experience dining here- friendly owners- Mongolian beef is the best I've ever had- great pork fried rice- steamed vegetables- no other Chinese restaurant can come close. I shared a lunch special black bean fish filet with my son. It's $20.50 before tax and includes a cup of soup, salad, your choice or fried rice or chow mein , and an entree. It was a good portion of food! Even though I shared with my toddler, I still ended up with leftovers! Everything was pretty good and to my surprise I especially loved the salad! Dinner for 4 adults. The food was fresh and tasty. Our service was very quick. We had egg rolls, the Chinese Broccoli & Shrimp Special, Shrimp Fried Rice, Cashew Chicken and Mango Beef, the latter of which was my favorite--very tender beef, nice ripe mango. I might have been more adventurous had I been with different dining companions, but all the food was good. For me, the prices seemed a bit high for the portions--we had nothing to take home! Egg rolls were excellent but small. We were not offered chop sticks (none of us are Asian) but I'm sure they would had been provided if we asked. Although we were served the traditional fortune cookies at the end of the meal, we were surprised not to have been given a pot of tea with our meal--how much would that have cost, 25¢ maybe? I don't understand people saying this is a "hole in the wall." It's in a nice location and it's a typical Chinese restaurant with very nice traditional decor and a variety of seating options. Taba Taba was a lucky find for us. The Chinese restaurant we had patronized for 15+ years closed 2+ years ago and we've been looking for another. We walked into Taba Taba and immediately recognized the owner. She'd worked at our old favorite before opening Taba Taba. She welcomed us with hugs and a large menu with dishes we will enjoy coming back to try. The dumplings were very good. Basil Chicken was a bit spicier than expected, but contrasted well with the heavily veggie laden Vegetable Chow Fun. The ambiance is no-frills which is fine, and the food is reasonably priced, especially for downtown Los Gatos. It's clearly a neighborhood favorite. I'm sad I have to write this review but I feel extremely let down by Taba Taba. I'll start by saying I've never had a bad meal or experience here, however this Christmas I've had one of my worst experiences involving any restaurant I've visited. It's Christmas evening, I expect the business to be busy which it was, every table was full and there were about 4 families in front of us and about 4 people in the takeout line. Firstly we were not greeted or given any sort of wait time etc, my wife waited in the takeout like and just said our party count, 10 min later the gentlemen told us a 20 min wait which we were happy to wait. Internally I knew this was more of a 35-40 min wait. We waited approx 1 hr before being seated, which we understood because of how busy they were. To circle back a little while we were waiting the take out line grew to about ten+ folks who they continued to serve. After sitting for about 10ish minutes the waiter came over and told us they were "no longer serving dine in guest, sorry, merry Christmas". I've never experienced such bad hospitality and then was not given anything but a simple sorry, no gift card offer not even a fortune cookie. 8PM on Christmas and my family is left searching for a meal. In my opinion the takeout orders could have been stopped to prioritize in house dining, or they could have turned us away when we arrived and saved 90 minutes of our lives we'll never get back. read more

Hot and sour soup was excellent, extremely well balanced in flavour, full of bamboo and tofu and all the brilliant ingredients and seasonings this soup should always have. I could eat a double size bowl, it was that good. Egg fried rice, packed with equal amounts of egg and veggies as it was rice, was very good. Snapper fillets in black bean sauce lunch special comes with a serving of rice, either white or brown. Fish was cooked perfectly, sauce was fragrant and savoury, as I thoroughly enjoy the fermented black bean base, which complements perfectly vegetables and fish. Plenty of onion pieces and large chunks of bell peppers, mostly green but a few red ones too. Service is relatively friendly, not the typical grumpy vibe you encounter in similar restaurants deep in the downtowns of large metropolises. They comp'd Yelp pal Steve a bowl of soup, owner said "on the house". So on a sunny Saturday, my Yelp friend Jade T. and I went to try Taba Taba China Bistro. As we entered, we were greeted and directed to a table. This isn't a big restaurant. It's not a fancy place either. When we were there, there wasn't white table cloths or waiters in bowties. There were plates and forks on the table. This is an Americanized Chinese restaurant. That's fine, because I'm 2nd Gen ABC. I asked the nice lady serving us for a pot of tea and chopsticks. When you eat in a Chinese restaurant, you eat Chinese style. My friend ordered the "Fish Filet in Black Bean Sauce" rice plate. I ordered the "Seafood Tofu Claypot w/ Tofu" and "Egg Fried Rice" to share. We started with small bowls of tasty Hot 'n Sour soup. The portion sizes of the dishes were just right. This place serves very good Chinese food. My friend let me try the fish filet, and it was excellent. The meat was flaky and firm. The sauce was light and had perfect seasoning. I ordered the Seafood Tofu Claypot. It could of used more gravy, but maybe it cooked off. What's a Claypot entrée? It's usually like a stew with different ingredients, and has a good amount of gravy. They cook it in the claypot and bring it directly to your table. The claypot retains the heat, and keeps the food warm for a long time. It goes well with a bowl of rice. Our Seafood Tofu Claypot was very good. It was loaded with fish, shrimps, scallop, squid and various veggies. Price: $21.95. The Egg Fried Rice was cooked perfectly. It was moist and lightly seasoned. The taste of the rice should never overpower the entrée. Price: $12.95. I liked the interior decor of Taba Taba. The antique artwork reminded me of Old San Francisco Chinatown. After reading Yelp reviews of Taba Taba, we decided to pick up Chinese take out from this restaurant on our way back from the Santa Cruz mountains. We ordered orange chicken, beef chow fun, pot stickers, basil beef, salt and pepper shrimp. We called in our order and it was ready when we arrived. That is always a benefit. The Food: The orange chicken was way too sweet(2/5). The beef chow fun (3/5) lacked flavor. The noodles were very thin. Much different than the thicker and wide noodles that I prefer. No hot wok char flavor typical of an authentic Chinese restaurant. The basil beef (4/5) was our favorite dish. The salt and pepper shrimp (3/5) lacked seasoning and spice. Lastly the pot stickers (3/5) were very average and not memorable. Unfortunately, this was a very forgettable meal. We certainly won't be going back to Taba Taba with so many choices of authentic Chinese and great Asian cuisine in the South Bay. It's popular, people were lined up out the door, yet the staff was gracious, efficient and warm. It's a cozy, fun dining space with red lacquer booths and hanging Chinese lanterns. We tried hot and sour soup, veggie spring rolls, kung pao tofu and veggie fried rice. Every dish popped with flavor and freshness. Cute little spot in Los Gatos! Probably some of the best chow mein I have ever had. All the staff was so great and the lady was so sweet and can tell she had a great relationship with customers and had a lot of people that were return visitors. I also ordered the mango chicken, which I was expecting to be breaded with a mango glaze... but it was actually healthier and no breading/deep fried and actual chunks of mango. I am sad to write this review as Taba Taba has been a place my family has frequented for many years including on Christmas. So much so that it's become a tradition. Sadly though we were extremely let down last night and scrambling for our Christmas meal at 8pm. We arrived around 7:15 and the place was almost full except for 2 tables and a long take out line. We waited about 5 mins and were told they could seat us no problem- they just needed to clear and set a table. We waited about 10mins which was no big deal. Once seated, we waited another 10mins or so for the server. Again no big deal as we recognized they were busy. They finally brought us menus and returned another 10 min or so later to take our order. In the mean time, they sat another family, delivered meals to the family who had been seated right before us and the take out line was being helped. About 15mins into waiting for our food, the server returns and says "sorry they are no longer serving food - Merry Christmas- good bye." She then turns around and leaves. No other explanation, nothing from the owner who usually always greets our family. We were left there in shock wondering what just happened?? Again - it's Christmas we understand your busy but to seat us, take our order and then come back after we have already been there for almost 45 mins and tell us to leave is just plain unacceptable and inconsiderate. All of this could have been avoided if we had just been told from the beginning that you were no longer serving. It will be a long time, if ever that we return and will certainly no longer make Taba Taba our Christmas tradition. read more

I called in shortly after they opened (11am), super friendly service by phone. They accepted Apple Pay so placed a pick-up order by phone. I'm a fan of Chinese, and with all my favorite cuisines I have a standard/default initial order: Chicken Fried Rice & Egg Rolls. I start there and it helps me confirm I'm willing to explore more of their dishes. Fresh ingredients, generous portion sizes and expertly cooked dishes. I have had A LOT of Chicken Fried Rice in my time - this is the best I've ever tasted. The amount of each ingredient is perfect. Eggs perfectly fried. Moist chicken and rice. Again, fresh veggies! And the Egg Rolls were huge and tasty. They were different from the standard, I'm used to - but really enjoyed them and the sauce that came with (really not a huge sauce person, but with how everything was tasting, had to try). I did a pick-up, but the restaurant was clean and very welcoming. I bet it gets load as it gets crowded but super comfortable. I even got to see inside the kitchen, walking past an open door and that's clean and organized. I also sensed there was a sharing or knowledge and expertise going on in the kitchen and I also enjoyed that vibe. Finally stopped in here one day and score, found parking without having to hunt. I was greeted immediately by the owner. Gave her my to go order and said would have a Tsing Tao (Beer) while waiting. Omgosh she nicely also brought me a lil bowl of peanuts to go with my beer. So I was really hoping that the food is going to keep me coming back just due to that little gesture. The place itself is not large but not small. Beer and wine only served if want a drinky drink. Got veg fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, red chili chicken and Singapore noodles. The hubby enjoyed his S&S chicken and veg fried rice. I was good with the flavors of the red chili chicken and the Singapore noodles which also came with char siu pork, chicken and shrimp. If you make Singapore noodles yourself you may find these lacking in a tad of curry and chili. But when working six days a week during a holiday, it was great! They did win best Chinese in Los Gatos 2022 and I'll second that and why drove up the hill after work rather than going to the locations closest. The owner seemed to know all of her customer's and asked my name. Such personal attention in a thriving Mom and Pop restaurant that seems to have survived in LG for years is a awesome sign.
