Have you ever heard of "middleterranean" cuisine? Well neither have I, but that's apparently what Taboonette serves, and the food is simply delightful! This casual, counter-service restaurant features Israeli-inspired cuisine, but it is by no means traditional (after all, where else would you find pulled pork at an Israeli restaurant?). I started with the sweet potato falafel in pita, and these orange-colored chickpea fritters were paired with an arugula-herb salad and tzatziki sauce spread on the insides of the bread. Overall, this pita sandwich fell a bit short for me, as the thin, supermarket pita was served cold, and none of the components were particularly outstanding either. The sandwich was served with za'atar-seasoned homemade potato chips on the side, which were crispy, but didn't really have much za'atar flavor at all. Next, however, I had the lamb kebab pan, which was a homerun through and through! On a stainless steel skillet came a serving of chewy, nutty brown rice topped with crushed tomatoes, some of the most creamy, smokey crushed grilled eggplant, refreshing Israeli salad (chopped cucumber and tomato), and some of the best lamb kebabs I've ever had! These perfectly round meatballs made of gamey ground lamb were crusty on the outside, tender and pink on the inside, and were full of spices and fresh herbs! And one of the best parts of the dish that really brought the whole thing together was a huge dollop of light, creamy tahina sauce that added an unctuousness to the meat, vegetables, and rice! On the side came a spicy green sauce (zhoug), which added a nice kick that went especially well with the meat! Finally, I couldn't help but order a side of the hummus, which was made with lots of tehina and was super creamy as a result! Taboonette might be one of the best casual "middleterranean" restaurants I've tried, and their beautifully-plated, amazingly flavorful pans are the thing to get! This is the type of place I could imagine myself coming to over and over again to sample their variety of healthy, globally-inspired flavors, which are all brought back and fused together with the distinguishing features of Israeli food! read more

Went with two friends for lunch and had a great experience! The restaurant is self-service, so you order and pick up your food at the counter. The cashier was super patient with us even though I had to go back and ask my friends some questions about the order options. After years of coming to this place to grab a Hummus Bowl or Shawarma with rice, I have given up. The quality has substantially gone down. The rice is no longer the kind used in levantine cuisine (longer, fluffier and mix with vermicelli) they are now using a rice grain similar to latin dishes (shorter) with very little vermicelli mixed in, they don't provide tahini unless you ask and side dishes are lacking flavor. After eating from this place almost every weekend, I can tell that something has changed and is not a positive change. Both the chicken and lamb shawarmas have set the benchmark for us to compare it against. All the little components of the pan feel so balanced and each brings in the variety of flavor that compliments everything that's served. This has become the go-to place in and around Manhattan area for Mediterranean food. This is a Must try place. The slaw, rice, and pork combination was super flavorful, and their hummus was incredibly smooth and creamy. Stopped by on a Saturday for a quick bite. We ordered a chicken shawarma platter and a sweet potato sandwich to share between us. The chicken platter was amazing. It came with a lot of juicy, well-seasoned meat, hummus, rice, and salad. So worth the $13. The sweet falafel pita was good too, tho I did not taste a strong sweet potato flavor. There were about 4 falafels in the pita with arugula salad so the sandwich was a bit empty. I added up ripping off half of the pita to dip in the hummus, which worked perfectly. When my husband I lived in NYC - he found Taboonette one day and wouldn't stop raving about it the entire stay there. I was annoyed and thought no way could this food be that good - I hate when I'm wrong! We moved our of the city to Denver and recently went back for a holiday party. I found myself roaming around the city as I do when I go back to visit and walked by Taboonette - time to put up or shut up husband of mine! I went in - the place was packed - I assumed I was going to be wrong. The space inside is small and the seating is fairly limited but I was lucky to snag a seat at the bench seating near the wall - eat my lunch - and zone our to my podcast. Very refreshing. There are a ton of employees working here and they all seemed to stay pretty busy which was amazing given the small size of the place. The aesthetic was contemporary and inviting. I loved the wall of wood! Ordering up front I chose the Braised Lamb Shawarma with a Mint Lemonade. Ahhhhh! This food just smelled to-die-for let alone how well it was presented. The lamb seemed to be grilled on a flat top after being braised which created this salty crispy crust to the meat. The ingredients otherwise were fresh, well portioned, and well seasoned. The large size made it pretty difficult for me to eat it all but I did the best I could. I did however make sure to drink every last drop of the Mint Lemonade - A: because I paid for it B: because it was freaking delicious! Let's start with the good. The sweet potato falafel on a pita was delicious. The sauce, the falafel, the salad IN it. Good to the last bite. I would totally grab one to go in the future. That's it. Tried a few things here with my sister who accompanied me. We were greatly disappointed. Hummus. Ordered it with sweet potato falafel in it and sweet potato fries on the side (which I paid an extra dollar to be seasoned.) The hummus was not the worst my sister had ever had, but she couldn't actually think of WHEN she had a worst one. She couldn't even finish it. The sweet potato fries were tasteless. I think I paid $1 extra for them to sprinkle sparingly some parmesan cheese on the top. Maybe 1 teaspoon. It didn't help and wasn't worth the $1. The hummus WAS saved by the sweet potato falafels that were in it. My sweet potato falafel pita came with a side of potato chips and I ordered a side of cauliflower. The potato chips were stale and the cauliflower was over cooked BUT well seasoned. So I'm putting it in the win column. This is the little sister to the restaurant Taboon (just a smaller and quicker version) but that's where the differences end..the quality of food is bar none and the service was just astounding!! I can't say enough good things about this place!! I had the chicken shawarma plate that comes with a delicious salad, some tahini, hummus, and the option of yellow rice, brown rice or quinoa - I opted for the brown rice b/c I was feeling healthy and it was an excellent choice! I also got a side of braised lamb shawarma and my friend got the braised beef plate....all were phenomenal!! I'd have to say the Braised beef was the star of the night though - it had a subtle sweet flavor that complemented the other flavors perfectly!! What I love about this place is that they offer you samples of the meat if you ask, so you get a taste of the dish before you commit to it! They also offer samples of these incredible chips they make! To drink we had this delicious mint lemonade - it was a tad on the sweet side, but was still very tasty! Next time I'm in the Union Square area and want to get my Mediterranean eats on I'm heading here again. Found this place using the handy dandy Yelp ap and was not let down on a snowy slushy wet evening. Chicken shawarma plate served in a skillet was pretty solid. As was the cold fresh lemonade. Delish! Lunch and dinner options. Dinner is $3- $4 more, but you receive a decent amount of food. Sides, salads, add-ons, teas, coffees, and some desserts. Not a huge menu but it does the trick. Plus, breakfast items are served all day. Hey, sometimes I crave breakfast foods for dinner. Ain't nothing wrong with that. IF YOU DON'T READ THE REST, AT LEAST READ THIS: TIP: They have a sign that said if you review for them on yelp, you'll get a free cookie! If there's no line, it's a very quick process. The menu options aren't huge - and it's really dependent on what you have a feel for that day. Remember to keep your receipt! I had the staff call out my number but a guy almost took my meal since we both had ordered the same thing (although IDK if he asked for the avocado like I had) That aside, the bathroom itself is also very clean. That's always a plus in my book - and I think the lock is also secure (IDK about others, but I'm always terrified of someone just blatantly walking in as I'm doing my business). Now, let's talk about the food. They had asked me if I wanted hot sauce or not and obviously, I said yes. Overall, the dish was yummy and delicious. The chicken wasn't too dry and the salad was a regular salad with some cherry tomatoes. What surprised me was how spicy the hot sauce was - at least to my taste buds. It smelled delicious but it was too spicy for me in large amounts and I suppose it doesn't help with a sore throat! Lamb pita with side of fresh hummus PROS: - super soft lamb: if you don't like gamey meat, I'd opt for something else or a different kind of protein (or falafel). This was super tender, well seasoned, and just got a great amount of that meaty fat that soaks real well into the pita - pita was warm and soft, not super hard, didn't dry out either - hummus was fresh, went well with the lamb as it came out nice and cold - comes with a nice side of sweet potato chips (upon request) - not too much dressing on top of the lamb and veggies, feels very healthy even with a significantly greasy and fatty meat. Taboonette's menu describes the Braised Lamb Shawarma as "Tender colorado lamb braised in chef's seasoning" and this could NOT have been FURTHER from the actual product that I got from them! I ordered Lamb Shawarma online for delivery and what they served were tiny "crumbs" of lamb (no larger than ¼" dices, they were NOT slices of lamb) which were so dry, hard, and black in color (drier than jerky) that it was totally inedible. This was my first and last time that I will patronize Taboonette; they have absolutely no pride in their food, nor shame to have the audacity to serve such "cr...p"! With the Covid pandemic, more and more people are ordering food online and having it delivered. Sadly many restaurants have shuttered down due to the pandemic and those that have survived, I try to patronize, like others in the community, to help keep them afloat. So I ask... was it because this was a delivered takeout and the customer is not facing them in person that they take the liberty to shovel out their droppings! What establishment would do such a thing! They don't deserve to be in business and I DO NOT say this lightly because I don't want restaurants to disappear; they are institutions that bring people together to share their craft and hopefully bring culinary joy to their patrons but what Taboonette served for a takeout is inexcusable!
