This place is decent for Pinole, it's much better than happy sashimi, although most people don't even know this place exists. I've had uni here before and I have started to judge some sushi restaurants by the quality of their uni and the rice :) I've gone here several times and tried several of their rolls, some can have a bit too much sauce and dressing on them, but they are still great, the rolls are one the big side so it's easy to leave stuffed (as I have on multiple occasions) their Tiffany roll with macadamia nuts is the best one on the menu. If you are craving sushi and don't want to drive all the way to Oakland for some good stuff, this place should do the trick. Shokuyoku! :) read more

Came here to celebrate my best friend's birthday. Service was good, the waitress was very attentive. The food, though, was subpar, which is different from my past experiences. Usually the food is really great quality, but this time it was very lacking. We had the spider roll, the caterpillar roll, the dragon roll, and the rock and roll. I was very surprised with the spider roll, as it is usually made with softshell crab. This one was made with fake crab and it was not presented well. It tasted OK, but softshell crab makes for a much better roll. That seemed to be the case with a few of the rolls that we tried, fake crab being present. It's crab season, so I don't understand why fake crab is being used!? The caterpillar roll was presented beautifully as usual, and tasted good, but with all of the rolls the seaweed was also VERY chewy. I don't know if that means that it was old, but it definitely made for a little bit of a negative experience. All in all, I've had a much better experience here. I don't know if it was an off day for them, but the food was very subpar during this last visit. I may go somewhere else next time. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go for sushi and Japanese food. It's small quiet and very good tasting food. Sushi is fresh and savory. Meals from the bento boxes, tempura, and my favorite the bowl of eel are made so good. Only downside and reason I can't give it 5 stars is because of 3 things. First off it because it is small, it gets packed so fast on dinnertime. And because of that in turn my second issue is that service tends to be slow, sometimes even in the non busy hours. And last is the prices which is higher than most other place of the same quality. I ordered some to-go yesterday to check out the Japanese food in the area. This place had the best reviews, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I called in and ordered a chirashi and teriyaki chicken bento box to go. The girl that took my order was very pleasant and well-mannered. The drive there from my house took a little longer than expected, but that's what happens when you live in Hercules, I guess (from the few days I've lived here and all of the reviews I've seen on Yelp, this city is not exactly a culinary oasis...). I didn't get a chance to really seen the inside of the restaurant, but the overall feel seemed pretty nice. The girl at the counter had my order all ready and even told me to be careful with the miso soup that was on top (so considerate!). Total came out to be a bit more than I expected, but I guess I was in dire need of a chirashi fix. Got in my car, drove back home, and opened everything up. I have to say, the portions were a bit disappointing for how much I paid for each item. The bento box portions were quite small, but the California roll that came with it was nicely made and tasted fairly good (I usually don't eat CA rolls, but hey, it's food). Some of the dressing from the salad kind of found its way into the teriyaki sauce, but that's more than likely because of my driving (damn hills and windy roads...). The chirashi was probably one of the plainest things I've seen in a long time. It had the typical salmon, tuna, and hamachi. The salmon was okay; the tuna was kind of rubbery and flavorless; and the hamachi was... strange. I've never seen hamachi that was so opaque and vanilla-colored. It tasted okay, I guess. They put a lot of sliced daikon (for decoration, I presume) /between the fish and the rice, so I had a fun time fishing (ha!) that out. I was full by the end, but my taste buds weren't particularly satisfied. I might give this place another try with friends or family some other time, but I'll probably pass on getting take-out again. read more

I JUST started eating sushi within the last year or so (Yeah yeah yeah I know). My first was at Ozumo in Oakland. My other experience being at the campus cafeteria at work- so my experience is limited. The wife and I ventured here for a date night (on a Wednesday LOL !). This place is staffed by very friendly and attentive hostesses. Dimly lit but could construed as romantically lit ? A little chilly inside but ok with a sweater. We came in right at the end of happy hour where some of the rolls are discounted- the hostess still allowed us to order off the happy hour menu. We ordered two off of the happy hour menu and a dragon roll from the regular menu, along with assorted tempura and shared everything between us. Everything was fresh and brought out quickly. Came here to have dinner as a surprise for me from my family back in June, the night before my wedding. My sister arranged the reservations for a party of 10 so when we arrived, our table was ready. It's a very casual place and that night wasn't actually too busy since it was a Wednesday night so the service was pretty fast. My nephew and I both had a combination bento box with Salmon Teriyaki and Cali Roll, he had a Chicken Teriyaki with his then we shared a Lion King Roll. Overall the food was good, not the best but it was okay. The server were able to handle our party pretty well and everyone was full at the end so that's all that matters. read more

This is the best Japanese in the area. I stumbled across it after picking my girlfriend up from work in El Sobrante. Not wanting to drive all the way to Albany for good Japanese, we found Tachikawa. The restaurant is very clean and the staff is friendly. I ordered my go-to meal; bento box with beef teriyaki and chicken katsu. Since it was happy hour, we tried the oh yes roll. The food was amazing. If I had to compare it to something, it would be like Chika a few years ago before they degenerated into what they are today. If I had to say something negative, it would be that the tempura sauce was different than I'm used to and the beer wasn't as cold as it could have been. Otherwise, this is a great place to come for dinner and next time ill be trying my favorite sushi order of a rainbow roll and lion king. read more

Heard about this place here on yelp and so we tried it. No edamame given at beginning of meal (this has been the only sushi place I have been to that never put a bowl of edamame on the table). They pay very little attention to customer at table. Tea was tasty but lukewarm not hot. Tempura was great but the shrimp was not fresh. Sushi looked good but tasted somewhat slimy and unimpressive so I question the freshness of their product. Not very friendly staff (until they gave you your bill). I won't go there again. read more

I love this place. It's family owned, in Pinole, and the food is great. Very family friendly. They've updated the menu to include pictures of the dishes they offer which helps if you are not familiar with Japanese food/sushi. They even have a kid's menu! We usually order off the sushi menu but our daughter loves the soba with her Kappa Maki as well. The Double O roll is one of my favorites, but if you love avocado, go for the Catapiller Roll (don't let the eel turn you off, you won't even notice it). This location filled a need for a friend and I coming from the North Bay and the East Bay and trying to meet in the middle. We made it there for an early dinner and we were looking forward to ordering off the "Happy hour menu". They have some very nice happy hour specials... but it wasn't really what we like. The happy hour rolls are all cooked (fried), crunch, or a handroll. Prices were $4-$6. Small happy hour beer $2 was nice. In all we ordered the Oh-Yes (sans cream cheese) it was very good, the Crunch roll which I didn't like as much, and the Pink Lady (spicy tuna & salmon on top). I think they could have been a bit more generous slicing the salmon for the top. The service was fine. The girl was very polite and friendly. I think she was the only one working the whole dining room -- she gets 5 stars for that. If in town, I would go back. read more

I went here because I got tired of the bad service at Happy Sashimi down the road. The food here was not nearly as good, though. I will have to keep looking for a good Japanese place near my house, I guess. The only good thing my husband could say about his dinner was the beer was cold. He got the steak bento box with sashimi. The salad looked unappealing, and he didn't touch it. The steak was grey and cold in the middle, as if the cook parboiled it ahead of time and quickly put grill marks on it. The sashimi was big, thick cut pieces of salmon that were hard to eat. Even the wasabi was off, like it was old and oxidizing or something. I had the Oh Yes! roll, which was goopy and sloppy and fried. The nigiri sushi I got was just okay, not great. The beer was indeed cold. The only reasons I would give this place 2 stars instead of 1, was my son liked his chicken skewers, and the service was quite good. However, the wait staff have to say "Coming out" or "Coming in" every time they walked through the kitchen door. It got pretty annoying after the 20th time. read more

I have been visiting this restaurant on a regular basis since first moving to the area in 2012. It is has recently come to my attention that my reviews are considered too long and wordy. I realize that I can come across as mean, but I call 'em like I see 'em. I give credit where credit is due. Tachikawa Japanese Restaurant serves a very distinct purpose in my dining experience. When I want sushi and I don't feel like driving for 20+ minutes, I go here. The service is good, the food is great, and the atmosphere pleasant. I over complicate my reviews when there are items of note such as a bizarre setting, odd service, or bad food. None of these factors are in play at this location. Also, it's usually easy to find parking. This will continue to be my "go to" Japanese restaurant until otherwise noted--and trust me, I WILL let Yelp know if this changes. read more

Hmmm. Hard to say. The fish is good and fresh, I had the soba noodles before and I liked it although they didn't give me enough sauce and daikon. Last time I went my mom and I ordered each a chirashi bowl. It took a LONG time to come out. I just don't get it. For the amount of time that we finally got our food, I could have driven us out to alameda to Sushi House, gotten seated, and have been eating for a while. This wait was ridiculous. I felt SO bad for the guy serving us, he was incredibly nice and even comped us our sodas for the wait. Is the food well worth it? Not really. The sushi is good and for the area and the price, it's good! But that wait... was terrible. I've been here a few times and each time the wait has been extreme. I don't know why we keep on giving this place chances, but next time my parents want to go get sushi, I will rather drive to San Francisco or Alameda. I guess it wouldn't matter because if we travel further we'd probably get our food before we would at Tachikawa. This place would get a lot more money of their turnover for customers would be faster. I just don't understand how an EASY meal took so long to make especially when it wasn't that busy. Also, none of our food was cooked and it's not like the fish was being filleted before our eyes. They're already in squares so they just need to cut those blocks of fish...into smaller blocks of fish and thrown on top of rice that has already been prepared.... I ..... don't......get.....it.
