Sashimi, scallop, dragon roll are good. I'd skip the bento boxes and cherry blossom roll. Chicken, beef, or salmon bento boxes do not taste fresh. I was surprised how small in size the Cherry blossom rolls appear to be, compared to most sushi restaurants I've had it at. Customer service was a hit or miss. What more can you expect from a sushi place in Pinole? It's been there forever and I have never gone until recently. But when you're feeling too lazy to drive and you want to satisfy a Japanese food craving, there aren't too many options in the Pinole area. I had a 2-item bento box ($13.99) with chicken teriyaki and tempura. I did like the wakame salad although it's pretty hard to mess that up. I wasn't a huge fan of the teriyaki, it had a slight sour taste to it that was somewhat off-putting. The tempura were decent - not too greasy! I've been here several times now for happy hour. I enjoy ordering from the happy hour menu. Most favorite is the Oh Yes!!! roll. The Crunch roll is also pretty good. I like rolls that are deep fried because it gives it a crunchy texture. I also enjoyed the unfiltered Nigori sake. I liked that it was a little sweet and it was a pretty good sized bottle. I hate writing bad reviews, but this place was dismal. Even in Covid era, it was just surprisingly bad. I stopped in for a take out dinner. $20 for a salmon teriyaki dinner that consisted of 2 tiny pieces of what was obviously frozen salmon drowning in bottled teriyaki sauce, a lump of plain white rice and a very tiny clump of iceberg lettuce with mayo on it. Provided in a styrofoam shell. I didn't expect full elegance of Japanese presentation, but this lacked any care or imagination at all. They can't even be bothered to use a package that can be recycled. It was embarrassing but absurd. I will not be going back. I really wouldn't risk the sushi in a place like this. read more

After waiting quite a while for a very overworked single server, the food we were finally served was totally unacceptable. My wife had an udon/tempura combination. The tempura was a soggy half shrimp. I had a bento box with Katsu and hamachi sashimi. The attached photo shows all the red that should have been trimmed. When I showed it to our server, she explained that that is how they serve all their hamachi. I'm a skeptic when it comes to a new sushi place. I tried this place out after several recommendations from friends. The decor was nice and seemed clean. The sushi bar was okay but nothing exciting. It was pretty busy and they could have used another server on the floor. Our server was nice and brought us a cup of miso soup while we waited for a sushi. I'm new to the East Bay (SF/Peninsula girl, born and raised) and I love sushi so when my boyfriend said there was one right down the street from his house I was super happy. Their food is pretty standard for Japanese/sushi. I've been to upscale sushi restaurants, I've been to filthy ones. I'd say Tachikawa is a total happy-medium place. Their portion sizes are good, I've eaten both chicken + beef teriyaki and I find it to be worth the price. I know some people get super snobby when it comes to the raw fish aspect, which is totally understandable, but this place is a lot cleaner than other places I've been too. I've never used their restroom so I can't comment on that but I like the spacious aspect of the dining area and their servers are super sweet. I love coming here around happy hour because of the great deals and amazing sushi! Food usually comes out pretty fast and fresh. I usually order an edamame to munch on until the sushi comes out; for sushi I usually get a Crunchy Roll and an Oh Yes! Roll. This place sucks! I sat down for 20 mins and didn't even get water on chopsticks while ppl who order at the same time got all there food first. They got not only there appetizers they got there main course before I got my water. Unless you have a big group they dont care about you because your bill isn't high enough for them to care. This place is hit or miss. Food is ok and service is so so. I've been turned down for walking in at 8:30 pm to eat even though closing is 9pm. Understandable but part of the business. I gave them another chance and tried happy hour. Crunch Rolls are $6.50 and yummy. We ate there for 30mins+ then asked for an extra order to go and they said it's $8.95! I get that to go orders are not allowed on happy hour prices but my kids and I dined in. I don't care about the $2.45, just annoyed at this stupid policy. Today I had the salmon lunch. I walked in at 12:27 and walked out at 12:35 with my lunch in hand. When I walked in I asked how long it was going to take after I gave him my order, and I told him I had to get back to work in a flash. He said "10 min"..and when he brought my food out, he says "Look only 8 min" it was pretty funny. So, about the food. My salmon lunch came with 6 pc California roll, 1 pc of grilled Teriyaki salmon, a mini salad, miso soup, and a hump of rice. I also ordered 1 more CA roll (cut in 6 pces) and a Tekka Maki (tuna roll, 6 pces cut). 1st, everything was tasty and it fulfilled the craving. Salmon was cooked well (very slightly dry, but good), salad was decent (crispy iceberg with that great white dressing they use), rice was just rice, and the CA roll was...ummm... very soft. They put, what I think was, mayonaise in the chopped fish that's in the CA roll. Oh, why do places do this? Mayo and japanese food just don't jive. It's like soysauce in Italian food!! Auuugh, that was the main downfall of the lunch..well, that and the fact that the seaweed wrap on the Tekka Maki was a bit chewey. More than I expected. So, salmon lunch, extra order of Ca roll, and order of Tekka Maki roll came to 19.70. There will be a next time, I want to try something different..maybe with no mayo! And I will call ahead for my order! The guy at the register was really nice..tall, dark hair.. ***UPDATE 4/5/10*** Ugh, the seaweed around my Tekka Maki and Kappa Maki is super chewey.. It's like they didn't soak it enough or something!!!!!!! The CA roll is good this time, I like it more than I did last time.. but the seaweed is still SUPER chewey.. more than it should be. I really wanted the food to be better :( I ordered a salmon teriyaki bento box with california rolls. Nothing in the box was offensive by any means, but eating sushi at least once a week I know really good from just ok. I will say the staff is very kind and the service for take out was good. Meh, I go here when I have a sushi craving while at work... I am a huge sashimi person, so fish quality is a major thing for me. The service is always impeccable. They are sweet and take care of you. As for the quality of fish, it's sub par. The sushi chef's just cut big hunks of close to not sushi grade fish and put them on the plate. I'm allergic to shellfish so I wouldn't be able to tell you about most of their rolls. But it seems the rolls that have shellfish get the best reviews here. read more

My son loves yam / sweet potatoes tempura and in the past they have been able to accommodate us when we order the bento box dinner. Somehow today is not possible. Seriously killed my appetite. I've been to this place two times. The last time was about 4 months after they opened. They still don't sell beer or saki. I don't like to eat sushi without a cold beer. I asked the owner about it and he said something like he "just hadn't got around to applying for my beer and wine license." We thought we'd give it a try... We weren't impress. The tray was actually smaller than expected. 3 of the rolls are basically california roll with something on the top (1 w/ avocado, 1 salmon, 1 tuna). 1 roll with spicy tuna inside, 1 w/ shrimp tempura.
