Best taqueria in the Marina? The north side of the city is certainly not renowned for its Mexican food, but there are gems to be found if you look hard enough, and Tacko may just be one of them. Despite some of its quirks it delivers on its mission of fast, moderately priced, and delicious tacos, burritos, and bowls. The food should always be at the forefront, and that is the case here. The burritos are the most popular item with choices of San Francisco, San Diego, or California style. The SF burrito is essentially a mission super burrito on a whole wheat tortilla. Although it's somewhat unconventional, the whole wheat tortilla they've selected doesn't have a lot of wheatiness to it so its not as bad as it sounds. San Diego style removes the rice and beans and the California style adds fries. Fish tacos here are great as well, but the quesadillas are underwhelming. For the salsas, the red salsa is the clear winner, with a roasted tomato flavor that is great piled on a burrito or taco. The green salsa is creamy more acidic and . Came on a Tuesday afternoon for a quick lunch. I've noticed this spot when walking to the shops near by. I considered myself a taco lover and I'm very honest when tacos aren't good. Tacko is a restaurant with the same style of Mexican food as Tacoshop at Underdog's and Nick's Crispy. Nick Fasanella is a Mexican food chef legend/entrepreneur in SF...I believe this is run by him, but I have been told lies. Anyway, I decided to have my standard of a California burrito...this time with carnitas. It had French fries as you know I prefer. Tacko has a Nantucket theme and is supposed to be more preppy. They do offer lobster rolls. I will try it another time, but beware it's $19.95 for one. I talked to the cashier and asked him where he is from. I stopped by tacko on a Sunday night at 6:30pm. They were decently busy with a line to order at the cashier but after placing my order my food came out quick!! I ordered the Baja fish taco nicks way and it was SO GOOD. It comes in two taco shells, one soft and one crispy which is good to hold everything together. It came with a HUGE piece of fish which didn't have an overwhelming fishy taste (which I hate) and they gave sooooo much guac. Like it was piled on there! The sauce they have on it definitely adds to the flavor as well however makes it very messy to eat. I was dripping sauce everywhere and it fell apart. But still tastes great. We knew there is so much amazing Mexican food in the area so this just doesn't make the cut. I will say that the service was really nice and approachable which was really awesome. Decor is cute and I love the open air wall/outdoor seating pods they have! Other than that, the food disappointed. The meats were all cooked well but look much better than they tasted. Seasoning felt flat on both carne asada and chicken. Plus in the quesadilla, there was barely any cheese, and the salsa overwhelmed with a ton of tomato. The crispy cook on the quesadilla was nice, but kind of made the fillings even sadder. After being in Europe for the past month, I wanted a good Mexican fix yesterday. As good as food is in Holland, Spain, Morocco and Portugal, we have them all beat hands down, when it comes to Mexican food. I've been here on numerous occasions, specifically for the Nicks' Way tacos (steak) and burritos. The Nicks' Way tacos are unique in that they use both a soft tortilla as well as a crispy tortilla in a single taco, so I like the variation in texture. However, it's something like $5.00 for a taco that I can consume in less than 5 minutes. Nothing special about their burritos. I do really like their green salsa, though, which I use in such voluminous amounts that it would probably easier for me to get it through an intravenous infusion! It's delicious on any of their items you put it on. Their chips have really improved recently. Previously, they served super hard tortilla chips that were usually brown from over frying. Or Lord forbid, they double fried day old chips. Who knows. Instead, now, they have chips that are perfectly firm and never seem to be over fried. However, why aren't the chips complimentary? They're not! Come on, just give your customers a good couple of handfuls if they're purchasing an item, whether they enjoy it on the premises or as take out. That's plain stingy for the overinflated prices they are already charging. Also, be ready to wait an extraordinary long time if you're getting take out when they're busy. I've waited for 20 minutes for one burrito at noon, and nearly missed an appointment. I had no idea the wait time for a take out burrito would be anywhere near that long. Staff is also indifferent, and not at all friendly. Tacko is definitely a popular, but a trendy Americanized "taqueria". The vibe is fun and lively, especially at the peak of lunch or in the heart of dinner. However, you'll pay nearly twice as much as you would at a place in the Mission, and get decent, but unauthentic Mexican food. Shouldn't be surprising. After all, how many authentic Mexican restaurants have prints of upscale, exclusive Nantucket covering their walls? I can tell you, the answer to that is none! Personally, for food, especially take out, I prefer the significantly less trendy, but more authentic taqueria, Los Hermanos, about a 5 minute walk away on Chestnut Street, in the Marina. Los Hermanos also provides better value and has a rare 100 out of 100 S.F. health rating. It's fine for what it is, but opt for somewhere else, other than Nick's, if you're in search of real authentic Mexican food, in an authentic Mexican setting. read more

A fun eating experience even during COVID. There's outside seating and the arrangement is really good, tables are separated by small wooden walls, which makes for a private-ish experience. We go here when we want a casual, quick, cheap dinner. I think the best item on the menu is the burrito (although I haven't tried the lobster roll)! Tako can often be crowded and the line can go out the door during peak hours. It's not a long wait to order but you also have to wait for the food, which comes out pretty fast. The Nick's crispy tacos are interesting as there is a semi crispy tortilla inside a soft corn tortilla. I wouldn't say these are crispy tacos. But they are yummy and the semi crispy shell gives it some good texture. It's kinda like a better version of the Taco Bell double decker, if you remember that. I got the side of beans which are not refried. They are whole beans. The vegetarian taco is actually pretty hearty and very tasty. It comes with lots of cheese at the bottom of the taco. The Baja taco was yummy too but could have come with bigger chunks of fried fish. They are small pieces battered and fried. The front counter has tons of different hot sauces to a choose from but I stuck with what came already on the table - tapatio, red salsa and green. None of the salsas are spicy. Two tacos are definitely enough for one person but I would get three next time. The price came out to be around $25 for two tacos and a side of beans. I didn't get a drink. They have a fresh water dispenser at the counter too. Sometimes they have sparkling water in the dispenser. But only when it's working I guess. On the day I came there was no sparkling water. The food is great! Didn't get to order any last night 10/1/23. Went in around 9:15pm to order a quesadilla and margaritas. Got told that they were only doing take out orders. Took a step back to call my husband who was outside to see if take out was ok. Initially I thought it was a drunk that came in, who threw his shoes around and was screaming and yelling about no more customers only the 3 people left inside. He went into the kitchen and the staff didn't react so I thought that was odd. He came out and was yelling at the customers about Yelp reviews and to review and shouted more. He then grabbed the tip jar and smashed it on the counter. The staff still didnt react. He walked away and they mentioned he was the owner. Already shocked and afraid of what had just happened, my husband ran in from the sound and called for me. The owner was heading outside as my husband entered. I thought the owner was going to attack him for coming in. My husband mentioned that a few people were attacked outside and cops were on the way and it was the same guy. I looked up the owner's names and it was Nick Fasanella. Cops came within a minute. It was a scary situation to be in. I will not be supporting Tacko anymore. If I stayed in the original spot few seconds before the tip jar was smashed I would have been injured. Please have the owner get some help. Was my favorite taco/quesadilla place, but no longer! This place is a goldmine that attracts the intoxicated and/or extremely hungover marina residents on a every weekend basis. It's the ultimate drunk food stop on a night out, or the perfect cure to bad decisions the night before. My group came for neither of those two reasons, but instead to celebrate one of our newest favorite holidays: Marina Saturday's! Okayyyy just kidding it was actually national margarita day but still a glorious excuse to day drink with the rest of the hopeless 20 somethings in the city. We also ordered a pitcher of classic margarita which was super yummy but beware so real tequila is it (no liquor license).
