Great ambiance walking in with dim lighting, candles and fantastic artwork. The menu was a bit much for me as I like typical Mexican tacos and these are an American fusion. I had a fantastic waiter who I had to described my taste pallate. I don't like too much spice and he made recommendations and told me what to order. I chose a potato taco which was a potato puree with a kick, kind of like patatas bravas in a taco. I also had a carnitas taco which was made to perfection. It was crispy and salted very well. My last taco was the carne asada which was tender and had great seasoning. I'm not sure if the tortillas were homemade but they tasted a lot like it. The rice had a weird aftertaste that I didn't care for. My husband enjoyed his shrimp tacos and smoky margarita. My drink was pretty strong and flavorful. I will come back to try more. read more

My favorite taco place in Evanston! They have great combinations of ingredients on their taco menu! My favorites are the shrimp and gulf snapper. I know several people who love the sweet potato one too, although I am not a huge fan of it. The taco orders come in a set of three and you can pick three different ones for the set. What I don't like is not being able to order less than 3, but I guess most people don't have a small stomach like mine and would order three anyway :P A lot of times I will have them box my last taco and I like that they pack it in foil for you so your taco doesn't fall apart. They have rice and two different types of beans on the side that they serve family style for the table. But but but.... their chips and salsa is to die for. We revisited here after the first experience, a couple of years ago, was not impressive. We are incredibly happy we did. We ordered delivery and it came super fast with food very warm. I got the barbacoa tacos and hubby got brisket tacos. DANGED were they awesome!!! The guajillo sauce was the BEST I've ever had and my husband raved about his and he should. Taco Diablo is pretty good! Went when it was pretty empty at first but it started filling up quickly. They serve complimentary tortilla chips (I've heard they're supposed to come warm, ours didn't) and two dipping sauces, one green and more mild and a more spicy red sauce. I liked the sauces and thought they were good, practically finished the whole basket before our order arrived. I ordered the 3 tacos which comes with rice and either black beans (which we chose) or pinto beans. I chose spicy shrimp (definitely the winner, the shrimp was not over cooked and the sauce was tangy, tasted a little like a po' boy), smoked brisket (it was good/alright) and the crispy chicken (which kinda tasted like a less tasty version of the spicy shrimp). The rice and beans they served was the most disappointing part of the meal. The beans tasted strongly of basic taco seasoning (heavy on the cumin) but somehow tasted bland at the same time. The service felt a little rushed with the waitress clearing our plates and bowl of rice and beans without being asked and presenting our check with the customary 'whenever you're ready' which was obviously not true. TLDR: Overall would give it a 3.5. The complimentary chips and dip were good and much welcomed, the service could be a little improved but was overall fine, but the spicy shrimp taco was the only thing that had real flavor worth going back to eat again. read more

I am so very happy that this restaurant is open and nearby. The tacos are awesome (think street tacos with elegance). They have tortas and plate entrees, sour lime agua fresca and margaritas. I also love the dia de los muertos decor. Reasons that it's not got five stars? There is almost always a wait for dinner (anywhere from 15 mins to 1+ hours) without the possibility of reservations, and the guacamole could use some garlic. So really, it's a 4.5. I'm just bitter it isn't easier for me to eat there more often. read more

Great atmosphere! I've dined in once, and carried out once. Both times ordering was very seamless, and the staff was very helpful. I always get the 3 taco combo. First time I got 1 crispy fish, 1 chicken, and 1 spicy shrimp. The second time I got 2 crispy fish, and 1 spicy shrimp. No complaints either time. This place is great for specialty tacos. Don't come if you're looking for a basic steak taco with cilantro & onions. Only con is the rice and the price. I'm so glad Taco Diablo is still open during the pandemic. I appreciated their food and customer service prior, and still do so right now! Their staff has been very accommodating to make vegetarian substitutions. Their food is also flavorful, including their (pinto/black) beans on the side, which is rare in my experience at Mexican restaurants. Most recently, with a carryout order, we noticed an oversight/mistake in our order when we reached home. After notifying them, not only were they apologetic, they offered to deliver the fixed entree at no charge. We were extremely appreciative of this generous gesture, and it's service like this that continues to bring me back to them time after time. read more

I expected little, and was impressed by the quality of food, service, and drinks! Drinks: the Yes, Please is punchy - which is usually not my thing, but I could have had about 12 of these. It IS sweet, so if you have low sweet tolerance, stay away, but still, full of favor and complexity: 5/5 would order again. OG - Diablos Margarita - perfect- sour, sweet, refreshing. Chips and salsa - very good, lots of depth to the salsa, fresh chips Elote Esquite - 5/5 - absolutely freaking amazing. I can't even... it's just so good LAMB BARBACOA - sadly, my least favorite - needed a few more flavors. The lamb was tender and lamb-y, but just kinda lacking? GRILLED SNAPPER - very very good - 4/5 - I usually don't like grilled fish tacos (so why I ordered it, I don't know, but it sounded good) - it was light and citrusy, crunchy with slaw PORK CARNITAS - good, solid choice. Nothing stood out particularly, but tasty overall, on course with good carnitas. Service - top notch, 5 star restaurant quality - attentive, perfect speed, and professional. So, yes, I'll go back, and in fact, hope to! I'm thinking next time I might go with a couple appetizers or a plato fuerte, because it seems like that's where they might most shine. A fabulous restaurant in Evanston. I'm vegetarian, and while this menu is very meat forward, I always find something amazing. The potato tacos are particularly good. My mother likes their "Yes Please" cocktail that she spent a few months during quarantine trying to replicate the recipe. It's a staple in our house now! The interior atmosphere is a lot of fun, and the staff is always very friendly. Not quite sure what all the hype is with this place. The good? Cool room, good chips and salsa and an interesting drink menu. The bad? Way too expensive for what you get. Three little tacos (shrimp, snapper and potato in my case) for $15. And to add insult to injury they bring two mini-skillets of rice and beans to be shared "family style" between the two of us. Wha? That's just goofy. The tacos were fine but there's no shortage of options for Mexican food. One of our regular spots. We've been getting our usual tacos and guac to go since they reopened-- drinks too. Almost always perfect. Tacos, enchiladas, and rice and beans are authentic and high quality. The carne asada tacos are particularly good. The one time out of many that our order wasn't great, the manager made it right with a gift card. I explained that wasn't necessary -- I called to let them know that something wasn't as good as usual so they could fix it; I really want this place to survive COVID! -- but she insisted and wrote us the nicest note. To be honest, I sort of knew what I was getting myself into when coming to a place for tacos in "Evanston" I didn't expect them to be the best tacos I ever had because that's what Taconazo is for or Los Comales. However, here is my review of my dinner on V-Day. "Carne Asada" tacos tasted like unseasoned cut up meat. They had no flavor. Not really a taco I would recommend. The "family meal" beans and rice was just unpleasant all around. Beans tasted like water "black beans" and no flavor to them. I was not a fan. The rice however was better except we know Mexican rice does NOT have "peas" in them (lol) Then, my jack/coke was just ok. Thank you for the overpour of whiskey but no thanks. The tacos I had was chicken tinga. Honestly, I give that 2 thumbs up. But why the two star review is because also the atmosphere was just very close together, for example, the waiter served the table next to us but his entire body was so close to me. I didn't like that at all. There needs to be spacing. $43 dollars later and I felt like 6 tacos, 1 drink, and the complimentary chips was a rip off. I get it, Evanston is trying to impress the college kids with tacos. However, I would not return for those reasons. That's a "no" for me guys. read more

My husband and I went here for his birthday to celebrate. So cool walking in and seeing all the interesting mexican art on the walls. The masks and paintings were awesome. It was very crowded for a sat evening so we just ate at the bar. Aside from that the service we had was very attentive. Made sure we were good with drinks and chips with salsa. The margaritas were good but was disappointed how small they were for how expensive. The fundito was ok. Not as good as other places I've had it. We ordered the tacos. My favorite was the brisket, although the steak and snapper were yummy as well. We would go back there again and try something different. read more

I just came home from this place.... Margs were great, I'll give them that. Tacos were average, I've had better. The rice was bland and who serves a torta with ciabatta? The main reason why I'm giving this place two stars instead of maybe three, the staff couldn't have been more obnoxious on rushing us to leave. They constantly circled our table and at one point, the hostess and waitress were standing in front of our table staring at us. We could've ordered another round of margaritas along with our fun conversation but decided not to because of how rude the staff were acting. I will not return to taco diablo. read more

It has become my go to spot for tacos in Evanston as they are always full of flavor, they never skimp on the taco fillings and the meat is always tender. I brought a friend that is a taco fiend and he left happy and full! They have so many taco options so everyone is pleased and you can pick and choose which ones you want for a total of 3 with rice and beans for $15.
