My latest trip continued an unending pattern with the Waukesha location's inability to fulfill mobile orders. This time, I ordered through the app, selected the drive through pickup option, selected "I'm here," told the person on the speaker my name. Her response: "Wait in the parking lot and your order will be brought to you." The parking lot was nearly full with a variety of cars. Don't you think it's strange she didn't ask me what car I was in? I literally had to drive all the way around the building, pull back onto the street and pull into the parking lot again. I waited 10 minutes. It's now nearly a half hour after I have placed my order. Tired of waiting, I got out of the car and went inside. I waited for someone to come to the counter, which itself took a while after being ignored by two workers. I noticed there was a bag with a soda sitting on the pickup order shelf that looked suspiciously like my order. When someone did finally come the counter, I exasperatedly said I have been waiting in the parking lot for my order. The worker grabs the bag and rudely hands it to me, stating "We had a lot of orders ahead of yours." Nearly a half hour after I placed the order. I was about to leave when I decided to talk to the manager. But I was again ignored for a while. I eventually talked to a manager, who said "I can see you're frustrated." You think? If this was the first time I have had trouble with mobile orders at this location, I wouldn't have posted this review. It's at least the fourth time. My recommendation: Go elsewhere. read more

Several people over the years have busted my chops for never eating here so I decided to go over and see what is so amazing about this place. I went through the drive through which was pretty quick. After looking over the menu I decided that the super burrito would be my first sampling at $4.19, not the meal. My first impression was that the super burrito looked super flat compared to the menu picture. The flour tortilla was fresh and my first bite was like eating a tube of paste, the texture was tortilla and mush in the middle that poured our as you got to the bottom. My super burrito was less than half the size of a Mexican food truck burrito and just about the same price, $5 from the average truck for the real deal. Well I don't get what people are talking about of how great this chain is because didn't experience it, maybe I'm just eating the real deal of all foods from all styles so I'm spoiled. At least now I can have a conversation with these people as to why I'm not a fan. read more

This place is quite more expensive than Taco Bell, so in terms of what you get for what you paid for, I feel like its not really worth it. But its more "authentic" in a way moreso than Taco Bell, as far as a fast food chain could be. One of the highlights would be their "Potato Oles" which are just more or less tator tots. Which I gotta say its quite delicious, even after a few hours they still manage to be decently crispy instead of soggy like alot of other fast food place's fried potato product. Other food i got would be their Meat and Potato Burrito, its quite small, when compared to some of other resturant's burrito size, something of this size. The one thing i would say that definitely isn't worth it is their Taco Perfecto. Its made out to be big, but its quite small. Sure its long, but its still small. Beyond that, service here was quite good, even with a long line and whats currently going on, the employees still got things out quick and efficiently. I probably waited like 10 minuets, 15 tops at most. Would i come back? I probably wouldn't come all the way out here just for it, but if I find myself all the way out here for something, I wouldn't mind trying them out again read more

tl;dr I wouldn't call this better than Taco Bell, but I would say the proportions are waayyy bigger than Taco Bell. Plus, the biggest variety of fresh made salsas you can get for fast food AND potato oles (tator tots). Taco John's is one of those places that you get random cravings for. It's a little pricey for fast food, but you'll be stuffed and you won't have any digestive issues afterward. On a busy day of work at home, we'll run to Taco John's for their Six Pack and a Pound. Six tacos (hardshell or soft) plus a pound of potato oles, for a great price. Sometimes we'll even run here to grab a bag of ice, again, for cheap. My favorites right now are the street tacos (shredded beef or grilled chicken loaded with garlic lime sauce and crumbled Mexican cheese) or ANYTHING they serve for breakfast. Taco John's perfected breakfast before Taco Bell even considered adding it to their menu. Overall, Taco John's is A-OK. Remember, this is fast food Mexican. We'll be back. read more

Taco John's food in Waukesha: Two steps down from other Taco John's and zero customer service. STAY AWAY! Buyer Beware. 2021's vacation had us hitting Taco John's in Rapid City, South Dakota. Food was excellent. On 2022's vacation we hit TJ's in La Crosse and TJ's in Madison. The food was excellent both places. Couple weeks ago we drove out to Waukesha from Milwaukee to buy a dozen bean burritos for the freezer. After eating two burritos, it was obvious these were not "excellent". They had 1/2 the beans, 1/2 the sauce and no cheese. The bits of onion came from the outside of the onion and were like leather. We froze the remaining 10 and called TJ's, asking for an exchange for good ones. It was Sunday night. The girl was, putting it politely, not well trained in customer service. We called back Monday morning, looking for the owner or manager and got an equally strong "kiss my a$$" reaction. "There's nothing we can do for you once you drive away". ??? When I asked for the manager's name on Sunday, so I could tell corporate who I talked to--she hung up on me. And I was NOT being mean or yelling or anything. OK Taco John's Waukesha, who would not exchange lousy burritos for good ones, you think I'm going to drop a penny your way in the future? Guess again. read more

The service at the waukesha location is terrible. They forgot to give me a side of cheese I ordered in the drive thru. When I came inside to get what I paid for I was basically interrogated about my order. I had left the reciept in the car. Not that that mattered as a female worker in the back kept yelling that it was in the bag and I was mistaken. When i came back in with my receipt to talk to a manager low and behold the woman who was being rude before was the manager. I tried explaining how unprofessional I was treated but she just yelled over me "bye, leave, you got your free cheese so you can leave now, bye!" Then after that she called the cops on me........ totally unwarranted. This location has serious customer service issues. I will never be back. read more

It is embarrassing that we drove almost 10 miles out of our way so my husband could get his Taco John's fix. I believe this is probably one of the last Taco John's open in Southeast Wisconsin. For pseudo Mexi fast food Taco John's is pretty decent. Don't even think you are getting anything close to authentic because I have never seen a potato ole at a Mexican restaurant. I had the grilled chicken burrito and the chicken didn't have that fake taste like Taco Bell. It was normal tasting chicken with gooey nacho sauce. My husband always gets an order of beans and cheese with black olives on top. He then slathers it with their extra hot green sauce. The nice thing is that you can choose from five hot sauces ranging from the mild pico to the extra hot green green. My husband had three cups of the green and for a short period of time I thought he was going to take some home with him but he avoided the temptation. Taco John's is definitely a step above Taco Bell but it is a little more expensive. I don't understand my husband's love of this place but I do agree that it is better than running for the border. read more

Safety protocol disappointment! Had called ahead to see what they were doing safety wise. Was told every employee was wearing masks AND gloves = GREAT. Placed order through drive thru (only area open). Paid at window 1 = gloves and masks by money taker. Window 2 food pickup = no gloves by anybody handing food out. Website said lobby was open = NOPE. Had missed their food and hoped they were true to what they said = NOPE! Guess It will have to be the "other" guys that are doing full "contactless" in drive thru! Okay, Okay. Lets just get this out of the way. I love authentic Mexican food. I do. I love flautas and tortas and chili relleno. I nom all of those on a regular basis. But you know what? Sometimes you just need a potato ole. It's an ever-enduring mystery to me how Taco Bell, with it's five different ingredients combined into a myriad of similar menu items is one of the most popular fast-food franchises in America while trying to find a Taco Johns takes a no small amount of dedication and skill. Taco John's is so far superior to the Bell that it's absurd to even compare the two. Three reasons : 1) Potato Oles -- What is better than these? Does anyone know the seasoning on them? I'm sure it consists of something + MSG + MSG, but it's focking delicious. If they sold it straight you could probably find me behind the restaurant scraping up change for another glassine bag of delicious flavor fix. 2) Mexi Rolls! I didn't even know they had these on the menu until I went there with my work partner. It's the only thing he eats from there. Think egg roll, but Taco Johns style filled with seasoned ground beef. And deep fried. With melty, orange, artificial plastic cheese. You know what, don't think about it. Just try it. They're good, I swear. 3) Salsa bar? The Bell has a few tired sauces in tiny packets. The Hot and Fire are okay, the new ones are terrible. Taco Juan's has five different salsas, plus jalapenos. It's amazing. And the hot is actually hot! I dip my potato oles in them. There's really no clear explanation for the continued dominance of the Bell over TJs. I'm unable to understand it, much less comprehend it. You can never have just one potato ole. Yum. Okay, if you eat fast food, and if you eat Taco Bell, try Taco John's. If you don't eat fast food, good for you, stay strong, and stop reading now. A friend of mine worked at many different fast food places, including a different Taco John's location, and she said that the cleanliness and ingredients were higher quality at Taco John's than at any other fast food place. You will never eat at Taco Bell again if a Taco John's is conveniently located. I promise. This location can get busy right at noon, especially on Tuesdays when they have a 70-cent taco special (!), but it's usually smooth sailing and tasty. My friend also said if they have their Oreo churros available that you have to try one. They hire men at $12.50 an hour and women at $10. They have at least 2 managers that like to harrass employees. Their beef is real but they leave it out for too long and when they do get around to using it, the beef is already bad. Was 3 months pregnant and a manager forced me to lift the thermalizers, by myself, when i was ordered from a doctor to do no heavy lifting due to a high risk pregnancy. Had Covid while 4 months pregnant. The General Manager forced me to take unpaid time off because of this. Tried calling into work one day because i had just gone to an appointment to check the babys heart beat, found some abnormalities. When i tried to call in due to constant nausea and vomiting, i was told no by a manager. However, when i did come in the same day the same manager who had told me i couldnt call in saw me and told me i was ok to go home because i had called in. Then they fired me without any notice until 72 hours after they had already fired me. Passed out during a shift and no one even noticed or cared. Almost crushed my thumb in the industrial can opener and the manager forced me to continue working while still in pain. If it had been a serious break it would have cost me my finger. Told the GM about all of the harrassment from a fellow employee and did nothing because she was a manager (Giana). I tried following up with corporate for wrongful termination and no one called me back. read more

Have you ever walked into a place and thought to yourself "Can I get hepatitis from looking at something"? That's the experience I had. As we walked in, ours shoes stuck to the floor that clearly was long overdue for a cleaning. We glanced into the kitchen (possibly the only clean place in the building) and saw a group of workers huddled around each other. After waiting at the unattended counter for a couple minutes, we asked if anyone could serve us. The kitchen staff begrudgingly tore themselves away from their conversation, gave us the stink eye, and hollered for another person to come help us. We were met by a very disheveled, soaking wet kid. He was extremely pleasant and took our order quickly. I couldn't help but wonder why he was dripping though. When our food came up, I noticed that we were missing one item. As we ordered a variety of tacos, I didn't know what we were missing, only that we didn't have as many items as we had ordered. I made the kitchen staff aware of this and was asked which item. When I told them I didn't know, they scoffed at me and walked away. Eventually someone came back with an item, slapped it down, and walked away. As I took my order back to the table, I stopped to get ketchup and napkins. The napkin dispensers were covered in some sort of sticky mess. I elected to pull the cover off of one so that my napkins didn't get this substance all over them. The ketchup dispenser was equally gross, but that didn't matter because it was empty and there was nothing to dispense the ketchup into. The tables were a hotbed of various sticky substances, bodily fluids and fruit flies. I returned to get more napkins to lay down before sitting. The food was pretty good but we didn't want to stay in the restaurant any longer than we had to, so we couldn't enjoy it. I wouldn't come back here without a bottle of bleach and a hose...or unless I was going through the drive-thru. read more

When Taco John's food is god it's excellent. I haven't had a good meal there in a couple years. Actually, I've only gone there twice in the last year. About a year ago I ordered some taco bravos at the drive through. Covid protocols were in place, which I understood. When I arrived home with my food the tacos were so soaked in disinfectant that the tortillas were falling apart. They were inedible. I sent them an email detailing my experience, and after a while they replied; they didn't care. There was no offer yo make it right. Yesterday I decided to chance the drive through again, and I ordered taco bravos again. Bother the Ronan taking orders and I were clearly not being understood, so I went in to order, no big deal. I placed my order and explained that I wanted the hot red salsa and the green salsa. I like to mix them into salsa a la diabla. She said they no longer have the hot red salsa. Again no big deal. Do I asked for the green and the hottest red they have. She said the hottest red they have is the green. We went around and around and she could it would not understand that I wanted a red and green mix. Finally I left and ate somewhere else. Fast food should be convenient, and I wasn't asking for anything out of line. Taco Johns has developed a huge attitude problem. read more

I go here pretty often as it's in a convenient area and the food is tasty! Whatever you try I can assure you will be good. I have tried the tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, churros, Mexican donuts, and more! It is all very tasty and reasonably priced. Way better than Taco Bell. They have a wide selection of sauces with different spice levels. I do have to say though, the spice is a little underwhelming unless you're getting the hottest sauce. If you start going often, the friendly staff will start to recognize you and treat you as family. They serve quickly and make you feel comfortable. There is nothing to complain about at this place. Convenient location for most, friendly staff, no wait to get the food, and the food is delicious. This place should be more deserving than five stars! read more

While generally not a fan of Taco Johns other items, I am impressed with the new steak burrito. I ordered two of these, and found them to be of substantial size, and reminiscent of what you would get at a locally owned Mexican restaurant. That's saying a lot for a chain restaurant, especially one I have not reviewed favorably in the past. The flavor combination was all there, and you get quite a bit of steak. I was very pleased with this new addition to the menu, and will order this again. Other staple items on the menu are unfortunately still in need of much improvement. Maybe hire some authentic Mexican chefs as consultants. There is a lot more than tacos, and burritos in traditional Southwest/ Mexican cooking. It need not be bland, and tasteless, even from a chain restaurant. read more
