The comfort food spot to end all comfort spots. This place is such an Austin classic and I'm so surprised at how often I go. It's not anything super fancy or elevated or with high-prestige, it's classic homecooked style cozy texmex and honestly, that's all I need sometimes. If I'm craving a taco or chilaquiles with a horchata to wash it down, I'm coming here. This place has seen me on many slow weekend mornings or before the commute to work. All their food is amazing. The tacos are underappreciated as I never see people talk about how big the portions are for a cheap price. I'm a big fan of the fish tacos especially. But my classic is always to get the chilaquiles plate. It comes with everything you would want and it's so much food for a good price. This is a great spot that will never lose my patronage.

The Taco Joint is an Austin classic for a reason! I recommend The 'Steak and Gouda' taco. The steak is tender and that smoky gouda creates a flavor profile you won't find at other spots. I also highly recommend the 'El 4/20' if you want something unique with the shoestring papitas.

I'm surprised this place is still as popular as it was when I was in college. I used to love this spot and hadn't been in so long. Gave it a try since I work nearby but I'm so disappointed. I ate my tacos only about 10 minutes after picking them up. They were completely greasy. Their tortillas are still good but the bacon in the taco is a bunch of chunky and fatty pieces. Needs to be cooked better. They do give you pretty large tacos. It's just a shame they are not as enjoyable to eat as they once were 10+ years ago.

I came here with a group of friends during a trip to Austin, and it was great! The music was a great mix of old and new latinx hits! Think Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, and Bad Bunny! The food was also really really good! I'm vegan and they had a few options for me! I tried their vegan torta, and it was delicious and filling! I'd definitely recommend to a vegan friend who is looking for a good deal and leaving full! Note: They have 'Just Egg' on the menu, but the cashier confirmed that this means it only contains egg from chicken, but is not the vegan brand Just Egg. My friends are not vegan, and they also really liked the food! They got the spicy torta, and they said it was SPICY!! like they were sweating! So beware!

I still think my original review, an ode to my friend Juan, is one of the most beautiful reviews I've written. This update is a chaotic one. After the wildest night of my life that culminated in me getting left on the side of the road at 4:30am and locked out of my friend's apartment, I decided to treat myself to breakfast tacos at Taco Joint. I got two potato, egg, and cheese tacos, and one chorizo and egg taco. The potato, egg, and cheese tacos were very loaded and soooo good. I thought the three tacos were somewhat pricey at $11.64 total, but I was full after two, so I think I will just get two in the future. It is so tragic this location near campus is not open on Sundays.

Came from a recommendation from a friend saying their sauces are amazing! Not too packed at lunch time on a Friday but people were constantly coming and going. You order at the counter and they call your number to come pick it up. Overall I thought the portions were well worth the price! And the sauce did live up to the hype. I got the chipotle and avocado. Fish Taco - cooked well. nice texture. one of the better fish tacos i had for sure. 8.2/10 Street taco - basically a steak taco. was really surprised how much i liked this. meat was seasoned well. the cheese complimented it well. avocado was fresh. 8.6/10 Breakfast taco - egg sausage and cheese. not much else to say. most breakfast taco leave me yearning for more but the portion like i said was more than i expected. 8.4/10 Marg- good. 10/10

El Vegan torta was delicious. The burrito had way too much cheese. It was ordered with beef and there was hardly any beef in it. My party also ordered a quesadilla with beef which also had hardly any beef.

Best breakfast tacos in the city . I wish they had more locations I live north but the breakfast is da bomb

Solid service and decent Mexican food & tacos. I got the fried fish taco ($4.75), the steak, egg, and cheese taco (4.50$), and the enchilada fires with chicken (9.50$). The fried fish taco was decent. The steak, egg, and cheese taco was very good and was easily my favorite item. The enchiladas fries with chicken was very underwhelming and not worth it at all. I paid 3$ for chicken and got a small side of chicken added and was told that there nothing that could be done to possibly give me more to make up for small amount.. The two sauces I got for my tacos were the chipotle and the honey habanero. The chipotle sauce was pretty good but the honey habanero was too hot and wasn't for me. All in all, it was a decent Mexican experience but nothing very memorable besides the breakfast steak n cheese taco.

good flavored tacos close to the engineering side of the ut campus. close place to walk when wanting a quick food spot. pretty cheap priced compared to most taco places. loved the el senior crockett, very cheesy and flavorful. service is friendly and fast, ordering process is very speedy. no ut student discount

My friends that went to UT Austin and also those that moved to Texas mention about this place, so I decided to check this place out. On a hot 90+ degree Fahrenheit day, I was so glad this place is a brick and mortar place, not another food truck, to soak in some AC. On Saturday, there was happy hour for the whole day - great surprise! We tried 4 tacos and each got a 12oz margarita (the small size) - which was only $4 (plus 50 cents for salt rim). Chorizo & egg - pretty standard. The tortilla is toasted and slightly crunchy. For the amount of topping they give, $3 is such an amazing price. One taco is good for a light meal. Migas - this one was more substantial - in addition to egg, there were diced tomatoes, tortilla crisps, etc. This is a classic Texas breakfast taco staple, and they did it right here! El 4/20 - beef carnitas with fried potato sticks - this was quite interesting. The meat is solid but the potato made this a bit too heavy for my liking Street taco - has avocado, sirloin, onion - this felt a bit overpriced but it was good. I love the freshness of the avocado, and that they give a lot of meat. However, for best value, definitely stick with the breakfast tacos. For each taco, you can choose a salsa of your choice, which enhances your experience quite a bit. We got red, green, avocado, and peanut salsas, and I really enjoyed the peanut salsa as it is primarily peanut sauce with light elements of salsa, and it was quite different. Happy hour is amazing - the margarita we ordered were very strong, that if I had 2, I would be sufficiently drunk. All for the price of $4.50 (if you get it with salt rim which I recommend). The pricing and quantity of food make this a college student's paradise - and this is why it is so popular amongst UT Austin students, and one of my friends actually goes here almost every lunch.

Great Austin spot! Highly recommend stopping by here! The food is spot-on and quite filling! Highly recommend. FOOD: street taco is a wonderful take on a steak and cotija cheese taco and the fried fish taco is a MUST! I ordered it alongside an avocado and chipotle sauce and I cannot recommend it enough! Not terrible in price and not too long of a wait! Cheers

Go down an alleyway, enter a bar, and pass through a door with a tacos sign, and you'll find a bustling taqueria that slings some of the best tacos in town. Tortillas are homemade, and pastor is cooked on a trompo. Don't feel like a taco? You can also snag a quesadilla or tostada-like volcanes. There are several salsa options, and drinks include Mexican Cokes and horchata, among others. We ended up getting two tacos (pastor and carne asada), a nopales quesadilla, and an order of chips and guac. At $5 to $6 a taco, this wasn't cheap despite the no-frills surroundings, but it was well worth it. Everything looked and tasted fresh and smelled amazing. D/10 is known for its pastor, and it's easy to see why. Served in strips rather than chunks, it boasts a crisp edge and a nice bit of pineapple flavor. At this point, El Dorado is an Austin favorite. People don't really debate whether it's good. They debate whether the wait is worth it, which is a very different conversation. So rather than adding another voice to the pile of praise, it seems more useful to talk about what people should actually expect when they go. First, yes, there may be a wait. This place is popular, and popular restaurants attract crowds. That's not a criticism; it's simply the reality. But it's also worth noting that many of the legendary wait times come from showing up exactly when everyone else does. If you can sneak in before or after the prime lunch and dinner rushes, the experience becomes much more manageable. Once you're seated, do yourself a favor and order the white queso. Better yet, if you're with family or friends, just get the sampler. It turns the beginning of the meal into an event rather than a formality. The white queso is every bit as good as people claim, but what surprised me even more was how seriously El Dorado takes its salsa. Most restaurants treat salsa as a free opening act before the main performance. Here, it feels like something carefully considered. Several varieties stood out, and more than one made me wonder why so many places settle for mediocre salsa when it can clearly be this good. As for the food itself, it's important to know what kind of restaurant you're walking into. If your idea of Austin Tex-Mex is fresh, light, bright, and vaguely health-conscious, you may need to adjust your expectations. El Dorado leans toward the heartier side of the spectrum. These are rich, deeply flavored dishes that feel rooted in tradition rather than trends. The portions are generous, the flavors are bold, and the meal has a certain gravitational pull to it. This is not food that politely taps you on the shoulder. It gives you a warm hug and then insists you have another bite. What impressed me most, oddly enough, were the beans and rice. Normally, they're supporting characters that exist simply because tradition demands they be present. At El Dorado, they seem to receive the same attention as everything else on the plate. It's a small detail, but great restaurants often reveal themselves through small details. The service deserves just as much praise as the food. During our visit, we interacted with several different staff members, and every one of them was friendly, attentive, and genuinely pleasant. There was none of the rushed indifference that sometimes sneaks into busy restaurants. Even better, management was actively moving through the dining room, checking on guests, talking with tables, and making sure people were enjoying themselves. It's the kind of thing that doesn't always get noticed when it's done well, but it absolutely contributes to why places like this develop loyal followings. The atmosphere itself is cheerful and comfortable. It's colorful without being flashy, lively without being chaotic. Nobody is going to leave talking about the interior design, but that's perfectly fine. The room accomplishes what it needs to accomplish: it feels welcoming and relaxed, allowing the food and the people to be the stars. As for negatives, there really aren't many. If you're looking for an elevated dining experience with dramatic plating, moody lighting, and a server who explains every ingredient as though introducing characters in a novel, this probably isn't your place. El Dorado seems far more interested in feeding people well than impressing them with presentation. And honestly, that's probably part of the reason Austin loves it so much. Go when you can avoid the biggest crowds. Order the queso. Explore the salsas. Don't overlook the beans and rice. Show up hungry. The food is hearty, the people are kind, and the restaurant knows exactly what it is. In a city where so many places are trying to become something, there's something refreshing about a place that already has.

THAT PLACE IS THE BEST". Located off Mopac and Anderson in North Central Austin, this beloved tex-mex restaurant is situated in a relatively aged shopping strip less than half a mile from the highway. Parking is ample and available so there should be no issues with access getting to the restaurant. Although easy to get to, it's a whole different story getting into the restaurant. First and foremost, they are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Secondly, they are so popular that you should almost always expect a wait. The pro move here is to book a reservation, but if you don't have one - anticipate waiting anywhere between 30 - 90 minutes in order to get in. Once in, you have the option to pick from a variety of tex-mex cuisine, including some local house specials such as the "crunchwrap supreme" which has an interesting backlore related to Taco Bell. Free chips and salsa (choose up to two salsas to try) land as soon as you arrive. El Dorado is known for its vegan tex-mex offerings so those with more particular diets will certainly be able to find something that works. The salsas are tasty. The serving portions are large. The flavors are good - there's really not too much to complain about once you're in and seated.
