I'd love to leave this place 0 stars. I saw it had decent reviews so I placed Uber eats order. I ordered a simple chicken burrito with no cheese or sour cream and a side of guacamole. $22 later I get my delivery and I open up the little bag and I'm faced with a guacamole packet premade that you get from Costco a homemade salsa and a burrito that fell apart. I'm pissed off I paid extra 3.50 for a guacamole side that was from Costco. Nonetheless the burrito tasted so horrible I took 2 bites and threw it in the trash. Popped in after an appointment during a weekday. I ordered the taco combo with Carne asada as my protein choice. Took less than 5 mins for me to get my food. Service was really nice, they greeted me and let me know it would only be a few mins. I'd say the plate it self was just okay. On the smaller side but I know things cost more now. First time at this place and I ordered the burrito bowl and my husband ordered the burrito. The chicken is stringy and looks like octopus. There was supposed to be sour cream in the burrito bowl. The amount of sour cream was the size of a thumb "nail". ( Picture shown, with zoomed in on the only sour cream in the dish). The food was OK but nothing I would go back to. What was also disappointing was we paid $1.12 for a side of salsa and got a tiny green hot sauce. ( See picture) so you can see how you will be taken if you order salsa. What a rip off!!! When I questioned the guy, I asked him where the salsa was, he said "this is all we have." I said, "I paid for salsa. I didn't pay for this." He said, "This is all we have and just shoved another one out to me. " I said "It's not what I ordered and paid for." He said again, "This is all we have." Then he walked away and kept working. Went there yesterday for lunch. Tried to order some lengua street tacos and then ask a question about the California burrito. The guy behind the counter responds "first off we don't have lengua" who responds like that. So I just said thank you and left. My lunch guys always talk about this place and I was so thrilled I was finally able to come! Taco Tuesday was not a disappointment for me... although I will probably get a burrito next time. I got 2 chicken tacos with chips and salsa. Add to that a bottle of water and my total was just over $13. I don't think I needed chips and salsa but when I eat tacos it's what I get for side munchies! The tacos were small, like Arynn-hand sized. For those of you who know me, you know I have small hands! And you know what they say about small hands.... makes tacos look big. anyways. Taste. I really liked the flavor of the chicken and the hot sauce that came with. The 2 tacos was the perfect amount of food for me since I also had a small bag of chips. Although next time I may get 3 tacos, no chips or a burrito. The salsa wasn't stand out for me but I'm pretty certain it was home made. The restaurant cooks to order so everything is fresh and hot! They also have a rewards program which tracks your expenditures using your phone number. You get 1 Star for each $10 minimum purchase and after 10 stars you'll get $10 off. Good to know. I was just stunned. As I was drinking some water the owner came to my table and told me the water cooler was for the customers. Fair enough and then after I finished eating I said simply, perhaps it might be better to put a sign on it saying it is for employees or put it in a less conspicuous spot so as not to embarrass customers. What I got was a mercurial owner telling me if I don't like it I don't have to come in anymore. Was excited to try a new place. We put in a big order for work. So disappointing. The carne asada meat had no taste not even a meat taste. Most Mexican places serve 2 tortilla for each taco. The rice was hard and tastes just like white rice even though it looked like spanish rice, and the beans were watery and cold. Not pleasant to eat just ended up tossing the whole thing in the trash. Dinner emergencies--SOLVED!!! Back in the days before COVID, I'd been to Taco Kabana for lunch a few times, & really enjoyed their tacos...but this cute little hole in the wall took on a whole NEW level of importance in my life when I was stuck at the end of work one day, with my hungry brood whining at home, & nothing "instant" or microwavable left in sight. Thanks to Yelp, I discovered there are only a few take-out places open downtown at 4:30 pm...& luckily Taco Kabana is one of them!! Keep in mind, I got lucky that day, because they sometimes close early if business is slow...but on that day, chef/co-owner Danny was still there & he was so gracious in taking my huge order so late! As it turns out, Taco Kabana doesn't have a catering menu...so he just asked how many people I'm feeding (9, eek!!), and we estimated 3 or 4 tacos per person. If you've had their tacos before, you know how generous the portions are, so 3 tacos pp is about right for your average crowd...maybe 4 pp if you've got some bigger appetites, or just want a lot of leftovers. Btw, all of this food is AMAZING as leftovers!! Come pickup time, Chef Danny had everything packed & ready to go: one tray full of perfectly-seasoned/cooked meats (divided by type with aluminum foil); one tray of beautifully fresh chopped tomatoes, onions, & lime wedges (also divided by aluminum foil...you can get cilantro too, but we passed on that); plus a bag of little individual-size cups of salsa; and a bag of small ("street taco size") tortillas. Super important heads-up -- You have to warm up the tortillas yourself at home, on a hot stove/griddle, for about 30 seconds on each side...so be sure to factor that into your prep time (or maybe someone can volunteer to "cook" while everyone else starts eating). But seriously, it is soooo worth that tiny bit of effort, because nothing compares to having your own DIY taco party at home!! Everyone can put different toppings on every single taco, if you like...or even provide your own cheese, lettuce, sour cream, etc (for those of us who occasionally use such things on our tacos...I know, blasphemy). Because this is sooooo easy & delicious--and fun!!--this has become like a monthly event for our family! Here's a few tips, for anyone who's looking to have their own DIY taco night, courtesy of Taco Kabana... - Parking: Free street parking opens up on Bishop Street at 4pm, by Remington College...but only on the LEFT side of the street! - This is a SMALL shop, so it's easy for them to get backed up, especially with such a large order. I often have to wait for about 5-10 mins AFTER my scheduled pickup time, so don't expect to run in & run out...allow for some leeway in your schedule here! - Surprisingly, our most poular meat selection here is the chicken! It's always well-seasoned, very tender, and cut into tiny pieces that are easy to pile onto the little tortillas. Everyone from my 2yo niece to my 89yo uncle loves it!! The pork is also very popular with our family, but our little kiddies aren't big fans of the steak (which is actually delicious, not spicy at all...I think it's just too flavorful for their baby tastebuds!) - There's only one kind of salsa offered here, and it is SPICY...so don't take too many if your family doesn't do spicy. - If you're ordering on a Friday, they could be out of 1 or 2 meats--especially if you call in the afternoon--so be ready with backup options, or try another day. - If you like lengua (beef tongue), I'd highly suggest it here (and it costs the same as all of their other meats, aside from fish)! But it's best to order on a Mon-Thu, as he's often out of this by Friday evening. While their lengua does NOT "melt in your mouth," I actually love that it has a little more substance to it, because that makes it perfect for tacos (in my opinion)! So it's just like the most moist & tender beef that you could imagine, mildly seasoned...so yummy! Whatever you order, you really can't go wrong with Taco Kabana. Honestly, I'm almost tempted to keep this "secret catering" spot to myself...but the food & staff here is just too awesome NOT to share with all of my fellow Yeeps. One of the few places in downtown that I've discovered which has fresh fish tacos. The white meat is soft and moist served on a flour tortilla with a nice heap of pico de gallo. My colleague laughs at their small size but I find it is perfect sized when served with rice and beans in a two taco order. I've had the chicken taco, also cute sized, and it was well seasoned and prepared as well. Order take out from the window or dine in the small seating area. I'm never someone to complain, I'm just irritated. I walked to Taco Kabana for my 30 minute lunch to try it out for the first time. Ordered a Lengua Chimichanga extra picoso at about 12:18pm (05/02/2023). I was on the phone with my grandma when my name was called and I verbally confirmed "is this for me?" before I accepted the food because the name Tristan usually isn't heard correctly and I'm so used to people calling out variation names that sound similar. My hands were full so I couldn't check to see if the food was correct until I got back to the office. I wanted to just call them to let them know it was wrong so maybe I could come back tomorrow to pick up the correct order, but their phone number listed in Google, Yelp and their website does not work. Money is tight and I never treat myself to a nice lunch at work, so I'm just a little extra emotional about this because I was so excited about what I ordered. Id like to put this out there: This review is ONLY about their taco salad I cant attest to the quality and flavor of anything else, because I have only had the salad, but what I can say is DUUUUUUUDE...the taco salad is major. I got mine with the lengua (cow tongue) and extra sour cream. The boys at Taco Cabana **singing the Coco Cabana song, but switching out the words** DID NOT disappoint in the least. Had all the flavor you would expect and them some. But the real plus, even though they are SLAMMED for lunch, these boys are fast. Makes me excited to try the rest of their menu. They do not have condiment cups for 'take out' sauces, but you can add sauces there. They range from mild to burn your mouth. I think the 5 pepper one is a ghost pepper sauce. Very little seating inside. I dont think people actually eat there. Which is fine -- there are places outside and across the street with tables. Taco Kabana is his go-to lunch place.. and he never gets tired of it. lol) This hole-in-a-wall place is located in Union Mall, near Mister Donut and Leo's Tavern. They serve street-style mexican dishes. This place gets real busy every lunch time. Parking would be a challenge here because you know how hard it is to get a street parking slot and even public parking in Downtown. You just need to plan ahead. My favorites from their Menu are the Carnitas and Lengua Quesadillas. For $12, you'll get 2 pieces of big Quesadillas loaded with Carnitas or Lengua with tomatoes, onion, shredded lettuce, cilantro, sour cream inside. So loaded. You can eat this with their spicy color green sauce. Me and my husband always share on one plate. Very tasty and delicious. If you'd ask me if it tastes Authentic Mexican, it can be.. I also tried their Carne Asada Burrito and Tamales (Tuesday special) but we kept on coming back to their Quesadillas. There's steak, tomato, lettuce and cheese in their burrito. I only wish they would add rice in their burrito. They give you a side verde sauce which tastes great with the burrito. However, it's sufficient for eating a messy burrito; each table has a roll of paper towels and hot sauce. I ordered the carne asana burrito ($9.95 before tax). It also comes with a small piece of lime and hot sauce to add to your burrito. I was satisfied with the taste of the burrito. It isn't huge but it is filling enough if the entire burrito is eaten in one sitting. The burrito has a lot of meat and flavor. I'm happy that the cook didn't skimp on the meat. I ordered the Carne Asada Burrito which included steak, cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole, and some greens. Also, there is fresh lime and hot sauce provided in the side. The ingredients were fresh and the burrito tasted great. However, I wish they had an option for Mexican rice in the burrito.
