Food is usually good but we tried to call in an order and no one answered the phone when we called at 10:30, then we went online and they charge a $5 convenience fee in addition to tip. Finally, we placed are online order for pickup at 11:45 got there at almost 12:00 and they hadn't even started our order, got our order at 12:15 the salsa cover wasn't put on correctly and it spilled in the paper bag and leaked onto the front seat of the car. Let's taco about Taco Kabana! It's amazing! I went there today for lunch with my mom. I had a steak burrito and my mom had a pork burrito. It was delicious! The prices are fair - $10.95 for a pretty big burrito that comes with meat, lettuce, tomatoes, beans, sour cream and cheese. Mmmmm. The employee working was friendly and helpful. Seating was open and my mom and I had the restaurant to ourselves, which was nice. Each table has a roll of paper towels, a hand sanitizer and hot sauce. I love this place. Their carne asada burritos are so good. I actually like that it doesn't come with rice or beans in it. I've also tried the carne asada quesadilla, which is more expensive but also much larger. Both are great, but I like the burrito more because I love how soft the tortilla is, versus crispy in the quesadilla. I know it can get crowded during lunch time, so I've always gone just after peak lunch period and never had an issue with lines. After reading the wonderful reviews, & looking at the great pics from my Yelp buddies - Sophie P., Lori L., Steven U., Jasmine W., Rachel I., Amy M., & my Yelp idol Emi H., I knew it was my time to investigate this little Mexican restaurant in the heart of downtown Honolulu! Taco Kabana is located just a few doors up from Mr. Donut's, and Mr. Donut's is fronting Hotel Street just across the street from the downtown Longs Drugs. There is no parking here, so do your best to find either street parking, or look for the pay municipal parking lots. As for me, I parked at Alii Place and ended up paying just $1.50 for parking. The menu at Taco Kabana is pretty simple, and not too extensive. They serve breakfast here, but Taco Kabana is known for their "Street Tacos" which they sell at $2.55 each. I was feeling da Mexican vibes today, so my coworker & I headed to downtown Honolulu for some Street Tacos. Upon walking into the restaurant, you go to the ordering counter & place your order of food. In another room, adjacent to the ordering area is a place where you can sit and eat. They have about 6 small tables with chairs in this room. Look for an open table to sit down, when your food is ready, they will bring it out to your table. We ordered the following items - 1. (3) Carne Asada (Grilled Steak) tacos @ $2.55 each. 2. (3) Pollo Asada (Grilled Chicken Breast) tacos @ $2.55 each 3. Chips & Salsa ($4.50) What can I say about the Mexican grub????? The food itself is deeeeeeeeeeelicious! Both Carne Asada & Pollo Asada was very flavorful, & packed with lots of meat in the Street Tacos. On the down side of the Street Tacos, I found the serving size of the Street Taco rather small, and after consuming 3 Street Tacos, & some Chips and Salsa.........I was still kinda hungry, so I had to drop by Mr. Donut to get something else to fill the void of my appetite! After all, spending $7.65 for (3) Street Tacos, I can eat a plate lunch or bento some place else for about the same price and get real full fast! As for the Chips & Salsa, the chips came out piping hot, and the salsa was a very generous serving! I liked the spiciness of the salsa.........Ummmmmmmmmm so good! Overall the food here is a solid "4", but I had to take off a point today as they actually got our order wrong, but made up for it with some free food. Thanks Bro. for stepping up, & correcting your mistake. Also, the serving size of the Street Tacos were kinda small and lacking for me but yeah........... We ordered 2 chicken quesadillas, 3 tacos (steak, pork, & lengua), 1 steak quesadilla, fries, rice & beans, and chips & salsa. Positives: The quesadillas were all cooked to perfection. The insides were ooey gooey, warm, and full of flavor. The tortillas were absolutely done right! Crispy and held everything together. The seating area is really cute and large enough to hold a decent lunch crowd, since this is fast food. Not so Positives: The chips were super stale and the salsa tasted funky, too. At first I really, really excited because the portion of chips in the paper bag was big and the salsa came in a pretty large container, too. However, the staleness ruined it and we ended up throwing it all away. We asked if they had a different batch that was fresh and they apologetically said no. He was very nice about apologizing but it would have been nice to offer to take it off the bill. The rice and beans were decent and the tacos were just okay. The steak taco was a bit dry for my taste, but my husband seemed to enjoy the lengua. If anything, this place has my business for their flawless quesadillas. When Gordon Ramsey helps failing restaurants, he often advises them to seriously cut their huge menus. His playbook for success involves doing fewer things, and doing them well. I don't know if they're Ramsey fans, but the folks behind Taco Kabana exemplify this philosophy. You get to choose from two meats (grilled chicken or carne asada), or you can go veggie. The meat is moist, juicy, and a little spicy. The meat is framed three ways: Tacos, quesadillas, or burritos. We tried one of each meat taco, a carne asada quesadilla, and one each of the meat burritos, which come dry (as in no sauce on top). The tacos are currently $2.55 each. They are small. While they were good, and are in line with what other places are charging for the same thing, IMHO they're overpriced, here and elsewhere. The burritos are $9.95. They are hefty and are stuffed with a good ratio of meat to lettuce/tomato etc. Factoring on size, taste, and cost, I think this is best deal. The quesadilla was huge, and not your standard tortilla and cheese. At $12 I think it is a bit overpriced but it is very good. The outside was more of a crepe rather than a tortilla. It was reminiscent of a French crepe or a Hungarian palascinta, like my Mother used to make. Inside was meat, cheese, and vegetables. I picked up dessert at Mr. Donuts and Bakery, which is just a few doors down. Made for a great lunch with leftover quesadilla and donuts for dinner. You'll have to park on Bishop Street or Bethel at a meter, if you can find a space, or in one of several downtown or Chinatown garages. Buses 1, 2, 3, 9, and 13 stop at Hotel and Bishop, going in both directions. Others like the 54 and 62 (there are others) stop on Hotel but only coming from the Leeward side. The 6, 55, 56, 57, 57A, 65, E, and several express buses stop at Bishop and Hotel. read more

It's been over one month since I had Mexican food so I was really excited to find this place! Mexican food is one of my favorite cuisines and I'm originally from Southern California so I'm used to having plenty of options to choose from. And in comparison, the steak quesadilla I ordered was just as good as the ones I've tried back home! At first I wanted to order the California burrito but they said they didn't have anymore french fries which was pretty disappointing. And the carne asada burrito tasted more like a wrap because the tortilla was cold and wasn't grilled. It's that time of the week~ Yeah buddy it's Taco Tuesday! After living in Cali for four years, I tend to believe that Hawaii's Mexican eateries can no longer compare. Sad face. My coworkers and I were craving tacos just because it was national taco day. After reading the reviews and looking at the pictures, hey it looked pretty legit. We decided to check this place due to being convenient for us working in downtown. Located near HPU, Taco Kabana is a hole in a wall restaurant that has a small seating arrangement for probably around 20-25 people. Their menu features tacos which come with either chicken, pork, beef, or cow tongue. Yes cow tongue! They put salsa, raw onions, tomatoes, and cilantro all on top on a traditional corn flour tortilla. Now the kind from Taco Bell. It just so happened that there was a taco Tuesday special, so buy 3 tacos and get one free. Woohoo, we scored the jackpot! They also serve burritos and taco salads which are HUGE. Food came out pretty quick especially with the lunch crowd waiting for their food. By far, this was the closest and pretty much the same as eating traditional tacos in Cali. I wanted to cry tears of joy. It was amazing! Oh how I have missed you, you beautiful things! My coworkers who also lived in Cali were absolutely happy. My coworker who ordered the beef tongue loved it despite the misconception of eating "beef tongue". She shared how it was flavorful and not chewy. Students! Show your student ID and get free bottled water or a soft drink. Overall I'm so glad we had the chance to eat lunch here. The only downside is that the location is downtown so there's not much options of parking if I wanted to come here out of leisure. But that's okay, at least we found our new lunch place! read more

We are in the middle of a pandemic with 200,000 and rising in AMERICA ONLY who have passed away. As a result, people who are COOKING should and MUST be wearing a mask. When I went to hopefully grab tacos on taco Tuesday, not only was the cook not wearing a mask, but also LICKING HIS FINGERS WHILE COOKING! This is not just bad during a pandemic.... I am always looking for tasty Mexican food.... I was able to eat here on three occasions....once for lunch and twice for breakfast. I am really not a 'breakfast food' eater, but I actually prefer their breakfast burritos to their lunch offerings. I was able to try a carne asada burrito for lunch and wasn't impressed. The burrito was a good size, but the seasoning was off for sure. Very salty and dry. I wasn't going to go back, but I saw that they started offering breakfast burritos and decided it was worth a try. I tried the chorizo, egg and potato, and it was ok. It was a good size for the price, but you have to like chorizo....and the people around you have to like you....because I smelled like chorizo all day. Yay for me...not so much for those around me... The bacon, egg, and cheese burrito is definitely the winner. It definitely could of used more bacon, but it was crammed full of egg and had a touch of sour cream. The burrito's stellar ingredient was the pico de gallo. The fresh tasting tomato, onion, and cilantro combination turned a regular breakfast burrito into the league-leading breakfast burrito downtown (so far). I was full afterwards...and definitely will be back to have it again. Oh...and they do have MexiCoke....for those of you who don't know...it's Coca Cola in an 'old school' glass bottle that usually comes from Mexico...and has real cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Food is amazing! My favorites are the lengua burrito, lengua quesadilla, and carne asada fries. All at the same time in one meal, just for me! Prices are very reasonable, honestly i think they should be charging more Recommend calling in your order if it's around lunch time, and when they say 15 minutes, give them 25. Also, i always ask for an extra side of sour cream and i've never gotten it, my bad for not checking before i leave, so i recommend checking your order before you leave. The Carne Asada Taco was on a single corn tortilla, loaded with chopped steak and sprinkled with cilantro, onion, and salsa. My taco was a bit dry, not in an overcooked way, which it wasn't, in a there was no fat or grease to make it sexy way. I miss the little taco carts in SoCal.... If you are looking for some fast and friendly Mexican go check them out. Located in Union Street Mall, Taco Kabana has a takeout window or you can order inside and eat at their dining room which has a decent amount of tables and chairs. One of my favorite places to get a burrito. They don't add rice or beans to the burrito. Meat and veggies. I normally order the steak burrito and eat half for one meal. The other half is delicious the next day without even having to heat it up. I think the lack of beans and rice helps with the flavor and texture when eating it cold. My roomie always gets the chicken quesadilla and the flavor of the tortillas is amazing. It is perfectly toasted and you cannot go wrong with cheese, meat, veggies between two toasted tortillas. I was actually on my way to Mr Donut when I walked by Taco Kabana and I was intrigued. I've been looking for a place to call home for street tacos so I paused to look inside then at the menu for a minute and continued on my way to Mr Donut. Leaving Mr Donut with my purchase I couldn't forgive myself i I didn't grab a couple tacos to try. There was a window where the cash register is so I walked up to it to make my order. I realized then that the window is not where you would make a purchase and the cashier told me that is where you would go for a pick up order but he was very friendly and said it was all good! There is also a doorway where you can dine in. It's a very cozy place with awesome artwork on the back wall! So I ordered the carne asada and pollo asada street tacos. Less that $6 I would say that's not a bad deal! Both were super tasty except the chicken was a little on the dry side but I figured it was because it was chicken breast so I was forgiving. The best part of the meal was their verde... it was amazing!! I asked if they sold it by itself but sadly the didn't. So I asked for a sample to take home. They're so nice! I come here for the carne asada (steak) tacos. They're pretty legit and I love the sauce they pour over the tacos. The sauce really boosts the overall flavor and it's not spicy. I've had their quesadilla too and it's okay. It's a little too messy for me. I enjoy the change to a flour tortilla, but I feel the quesadilla lacks flavor. After visiting Taco Kabana several times, I think they make the best Carne Asada Burritos on the island. I still enjoy going to Serg's in Manoa but have found the burritos at Taco Kabana to be more consistent in how the burrito is prepared...always the same good portion size, juicy and tasty steak and flavorful pico de gallo. The location is in the heart of downtown and the neighborhood has folks that appear homeless but I didn't mind. Parking can be challenging but I'm glad I found a spot a couple blocks away. They do close early in the evening as I can easily see that they cater to the downtown business clientele primarily for lunch. Please don't be discouraged as it will be worth the visit to enjoy some real authentic Mexican food :) I'll definitely be back for more! read more
